I have been here a few times in the past two years and the food never seems to disappoint. It's always tough to choose what to order. The burgers are so filling, my personal favorite is the pit stop. I love the fried egg in it! My husband loves the cheesesteak and the chubba burger. The chicken philly is another favorite as well. I went to Chubbfather's Saturday for supper. All my usual dining-mates had other plans so I was on my own. There were a few people in line when I got there. Some were picking up to-go orders, some were picking up Grubhub orders and some were like me: in line to order food. I needed time to look over the menu so I stepped out of line. When I stepped back in line one of the cashiers (there were two) noticed, and knew I'd been there longer than some of the Chubby come Latelies and beckoned me over to give my order, which was nice. I got the Vulcan po' boy, all the way. Steak, sausage, onions, Cajun horseradish (I checked to see how spicy it was, since I'm a wimp) and I don't can't remember what else. I selected potato salad for my side. They took my name and gave me my drink and a number placard to put on my table. Then I waited for my food. And waited. And waited some more. There weren't a lot of people dining in, but there were doing a booming take out business. I don't know how many people had called in orders before I arrived (or after I got there, as far as that goes). It took 27 minutes for my food to arrive. Once upon a time that would have me fuming. But times are different now. The last four places I ate told me upfront that they due to the pandemic they were short staffed and wait times were longer than usual. I don't know if that's the case at Chubbfather's, but I have no reason to believe Covid 19 stops at their door. Is it inconvenient to wait half an hour for my food? Yes. Given the plague that's affecting Alabama right now, is that a first world problem? Hell, yes. Let's keep on waiting and see how the rest of the meal goes. The food came out and the spice level was right on the edge of what I can tolerate, I enjoyed the sammich but I took frequent sips of my soda. Two different folks came out frequently to check on how I was doing and provide refills. Maybe the sammich makers were short staffed/overly busy, but the front of the house folks were on the job. I can't say if the potato salad was made in house or came from a tub, but it was NOT your run of the mill potato salad that you get at nine out of ten sandwich shops or restaurants. Bonus points for the potato salad. So...points for being recognized by the cashier. Points for the tasty sandwich and tasty salad. Points for the attentive staff who kept my soda cup filled and checked on my frequently. Minus points for the wait. Three out of four ain't bad. I give Chubbfather's a thumbs up. read more

How have I not heard of this place before? A friend told me about it while we were in the area and so we stopped in to get a bite. Warning...the double burger is massive. Don't order it unless you plan of eating 2/3lb of meat in one sitting. If that is your plan, then feel free to delight in the fresh cooked, greasy deliciousness that is this massive burger. They've got a variety of things on the menu ranging from burgers and fries/tots to po-boys. The portions are huge, the prices are good and they don't start cooking your food until you order it so it comes out fresh and piping hot. Great example of an elevated grease pit type situation. Stopped by Chubbfather's to pick up burger and fries for dinner! Counter service was quick and efficient. Food came out within 10 minutes. I got the Chubba with sweet potato fries! Burger was cooked to a nice medium well, juicy and tasty. Large patty with a toasted buttered bun. Cheese was hot and melted, bacon was crisp. Overall an excellent burger! Sweet potato fries or any fries are hard to review with any take out order, due to the fact that they get steamed in the foam clamshell. Nice flavor but again they were soggy. Road tripped to Calera to go wine tasting at Corbin Farms and tried out Chubbfather's after seeing the great reviews. We were not disappointed! We were a bit surprised at the interior of Chubbfather's. Not sure why we weren't expecting a divey atmosphere, but that's what we got. We're good with that. You place your order at the counter and they bring your food out to you. My dad got the shrimp poboy, my mom got the sliders, and I got the Zydeco burger, with the onion rings (note that these are very small, thin onion rings, not the thick rings like you'd get in place of French fries) and Cajun horseradish sauce on the side. We all got fries with our meals. My dad liked the poboy a lot, although he couldn't eat it all. Small stomach, he has! My Zydeco burger was probably one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. I wound up liking the onion rings but not the horseradish sauce. Regardless, the burger was juicy, cooked perfectly, with a great ratio of fat, and the BACON was fabulous. Cheese plays well with the flavors, too. My mom felt similarly about her sliders. We all enjoyed the semi-spicy fries, too. Generous portions all around. The only reason this place gets a 4 instead of a 5 is that the bathroom was rather grimy and could only accommodate one person at a time, and the folks who took our order came across as a little impatient. Nothing that'd keep me away from that burger, though! I'd definitely revisit Chubbfather's if given the opportunity. read more

Business was hopping here tonight, good for them! We went in to eat but decided to do take out instead as the restaurant was a little too busy for us in consideration of COVID. The staff was super nice and very efficient. Food was very fresh and yummy! We ordered the onion straw appetizer and then added it to our salad and our sandwich....the food was already good without the addition but even better with, haha. I really liked their onion straws! Pros: Great bar food. The Chub burger as definitely on my top burgers in Alabama list. We got a side of onion strings that were great. Cons: The place was nasty, borderline unhealthy. The unisex bathroom reeked of piss and everything was dirty from the sink to the doorknob. Our table was not clean and the salt and pepper shakers were crusted up with dust and greasy/sticky fingerprints. We tried some from another table, but it was the same. My family eats or orders takeout a few times a month at Chubbfathers. The food is always great and last night was no exception. Two orders of wings cooked great with tots and loaded cheese fries. Also two orders of buffalo chicken fries which were also great. If you haven't ordered or upgraded your regular fries to the loaded cheese fries then you are missing out! They are incredible. I will also say my family is very picky and has several special requests when we order and they are almost always received the way we ask. A really good burger was the consensus of the table, but a bit messy. I ordered my chubba sans onions but it came with those anyway. Didn't kick up a fuss since they were sautéed down to almost soup and it's raw onions that really give me issues. The tall kid scarfed the chicken down about as fast as humanly possible. I've eaten here 3 times. Twice at the brick and mortar and once at the trick. I got the chubba twice and a chicken Philly cheesesteak. About we're delicious. The burger is a mess and I love that. Similar to the Milos Mega meal hamburger with honey mustard. You almost have to get a wash up after you eat either because of all the sauce. Chicken Philly was the perfect size and the bread was soft. I love their fries, sometimes I don't think they give enough but that's a minute complaint. First of all the owner is a truly amazing person. They do so much philanthropy and they don't seek out attention, they just do it because it's good and right. The employees wear shirts that simply say "Love Everybody" You taste the love and joy in their food. The burgers are truly epic. The best burger IMHO, is the zydeco. They take their massive fire broiled burger patty and add cheese, Cajun horseradish sauce, fried onions and shredded lettuce. If your really hungry, make it a double! The po-boys and cheesesteaks are also very tasty and anything with that Cajun horseradish is grub-worthy. Their fries are great, regular and sweet potato, but I love to get the fried okra. I was a little skeptical when my nephew chose this place. It's a little dark and divey when you walk in. But then we were greeted by the friendliest people. They seemed to be family. My group placed their orders and the ladies that helped us were just the nicest. We waited hardly no time for our burgers to come out. I ordered the Zydeco burger. I am not lying when I tell you this was the best hamburger I've had all year. It beats Five Guys and it beats Mug Shots.
