As an avid comic book collector of over 1k comics, and I love supporting comic book shops all over the Bay Area. So when I went to this shop I was expecting a solid experience, which I did not receive. The shop is very disorganized which at first I found surprising but not off putting as I embraced it as a journey to see what I find. I had accumulated a few comics that peaked my interest, I then proceeded to the check out I was greeted by a fellow that I believed was the owner. He then preceded to look over each comic book I had chosen and started looking up on his phone over the online value of each comic and then preceded to change the price on every comic. Making an excuse for every mark up. I was dumbfounded cause i had seen each comic was priced before hand and now the price changes. Needless to say I didn't buy anything and never came back, and would advise anyone who comes here for comics to verify the price with the person on duty so you don't get surprised when go and try to make purchase. read more

Me and my boyfriend love to visit all the card, comic, and retro game shops we find wherever we go. We were driving around in the area and my bf remembered an old comic book shop he used to go to as a kid. I searched yelp and looks like the place is still standing but in a different location. This is located in the same complex as it used to, just in a different spot. It is fairly small but packed with so much to see. They have manga, comics, toys, video games, figurines, pokemon cards, funko pops, etc. I enjoyed just walking around and seeing the variety of stuff they had while having small talk with the staff. The staff was awesome. Super friendly and very knowledgeable. My bf and I enjoyed talking to them. We grabbed a couple items that felt like they were priced fairly. Came in for the first time hoping to sell part of my Pokémon collection. I believe the person we spoke with was Chris. Right from the start, when we asked if he was buying cards, he said: "It depends on the cards and what price you're offering." We asked what percentage he usually buys at, and again he replied: "Like I said, depends on the card. Depends on your offer." Okay... lol. Despite the vagueness, I decided to let him go through my binder. He pulled about half the cards he was interested in and began pricing them--using TCGplayer for English cards and eBay for foreign ones. I was also tracking prices on my phone and logging them into a spreadsheet as I watched him go card by card a few feet behind him. After nearly an hour of this, I gave up following along for the last stack and just estimated the remainder by adding $25 when he was about 80% done with the stack. Along the way, he made some snide remarks about sticker prices I had left on a few cards from when I was selling locally--saying things like, "This is priced at $2, but the last sold was $1... way off," even when the market price was literally $2 and is still $2. It felt petty and unnecessary. Some of the cards I priced also were under priced from the recent increase of market? When he finished, I gave him an honest price of $120, which I estimated was around 80% of market value (~$150) that I had estimated. He immediately shot it down and said "so you're expecting me to pay full price? I wouldn't pay anywhere near full price for these cards" He also called most of the cards "lower end." Ironically, his store's own inventory didn't even measure up to many of the cards that I brought in. The most expensive single to be seen in the display case was a decent $17 Mimikyu card, nothing above that... and many "self made mystery bundle packs" that are shrink wrapped in clear plastic. I told him that the entire price I had gotten was about $148 and that I could go as low as 70% (~$103). It would've saved us both an hour of time if he just told me upfront what his buy rate was instead of having to banter around like this for longer. I'm fully aware that expecting 70-80% of market price is above what most shops pay (usually 50-60%). But I usually sell my cards directly at market price through Facebook Marketplace and TCGplayer. This was me trying to give card shops another chance, thinking it might be worth the convenience. But if he had just communicated his buy rate, we wouldn't have wasted each other's time. He told me to shoot him an offer, I did, and he ended up offended by my offer. To be honest, the entire interaction felt shady--like the kind of shop that will lowball or take advantage of you if you walk in without knowing the value of your cards. It doesn't inspire trust, and I can only imagine how many casual collectors have gotten ripped off. There was also a moment when a regular customer came in looking for a specific playable card. Chris mentioned he might get the Alt Art from my trade if our deal went through and he can sell it to him. The regular asked to check the bulk boxes for it first as he just needed to swap a few rotated cards, and Chris said: "No, nobody looks through bulk anymore. People mess it up--it's a waste of time and money." My boyfriend felt bad and offered to let him look through some of our own playable bulk from the car. Unfortunately, nothing worked out, but at least we tried to help--player to player. The regular later asked to buy the card directly from me outside the shop. I never offered first hand, but Chris got upset and said: "You can't do that. You're still buying product that isn't from us in our store." I understand protecting your business--but this wasn't some sketchy back-alley deal. It was a regular customer just trying to get a card he needed for his deck. At the end of the day, it felt like this shop cared more about profit than building community around the game. Chris had offered the regular to purchase the card's amount in store product for me but I had declined. There was barely anything valued in the singles inventory that interested me that was equal to the card's dollar amount. Before leaving, I tried to at least buy a $2.99 deck box. Chris offered to let me trade in a few cards since they have a $5 card minimum for purchases. I just quickly pulled out these cards from the stack he was interested and offered it to him: * Pawmi 226/091 - ~$0.90 Not gonna lie, I thought this one went up that's why I offered it * Galarian Zigzagoon SV78/122 - ~$0.95 * Sinistea SV52/122 - ~$2.00 (About $4 total now that I fully calculated it). Chris scoffed and said: "You're really offering me less than $3 in cards for the deck box?" There was zero need for the attitude. A simple, "You're a little short, can you toss in a few more?" would've been fine. I ended up just paying with a $20 and walking out irritated. read more

It was exciting to see this comic place not far from where we live. Husband got our son liking comics years ago and now we take our son to Chris's comics each month. We purchase 3-4 comics every time we visit there and have taken advantage of their comic deals that's stationed right out side the store before customers enter the store. I tried to pick up a couple comics from this shop, and when i came to check out, the person running it went on ebay on his computer and changed the prices of the books to what he saw on ebay. He gave me the "average ebay price" in his words. Meaning that there were books that were more expensive on ebay, but also cheaper. What's the point of buying it in store then if youre going to charge me the average ebay price? i could just go on ebay myself and get it for cheaper read more

The prices seem fine, about average with other card shops, not too high or low. Chaotic, Small, Cramped, COOL, AWESOME. Chris's Comics reminds me of comic stores I grew up with. There is a little bit of everything in here: new comics you can reserve, well organized back-issues, DnD, Pokemon, snacks, etc... The biggest gem is Chris himself, I was looking for any collected trades of Carl Barks Donald Duck or Scrooge to read with my son and he gave me some awesome modern alternatives. Cool to see Darkwing Duck and Rescue Rangers still alive in comic format, my son loved both Disney adventure books. He also hooked us up with 2 free books from free-comics day and my son liked talking to Chris about Zelda and checking out the Link shirt he was wearing. A small, local shop where people seem to know each other by first name basis, and now that my son is hooked on some of the continuing story arcs from the comics we bought we will be back! read more

So glad I did, spend a couple hours there by myself trying to find some cards they didnt have and again taking my 3 oldest and letting them browse for ones they wanted. First they had what I wanted! The owner was very cool and the store while a little stuffed after a large shipment, was awesome. I could have stayed a lot longer looking at everything. Hubby was trying to buy some sleeves for Pokemon cards that he gotten, but most places that we went to didn't have any. We use to always go to C&Js back in the days and got to meet both Jeff and Chris. Before we stopped going, Jeff did tell us that his brother Chris opened up a shop that sells Pokemon cards and other stuff as well. So we've been here once, but that was years ago. We decided to come by one day to get some Pokemon sleeves and hoping to maybe get some Pokemon packs as well. Everybody wore mask, and Chris was super helpful, as always. He didn't have many Pokemon Booster Packs, as he told us many places are sold out and it's hard to come by. He did have a few things and we decided to purchase some. - A quick stop after a movie marathon at the local theater brought me here, the definite example of a simple store that sells comics and more. On my brief walk through the maze of boxes stacked one upon another, I was able to see a few things of interest along the way. But I was a bit deterred by what was exactly for "sale" and what might be part of someone's personal collection. And I guess that's part of the charm coming to a place like this; it's unpretentious, and to the point. You visit, browse, and maybe there's a purchase in it for you, if one happens to look long enough. Me, I didn't stay too long; a few patron reviews stated the somewhat claustrophobic nature of being there tends to kind of cramp the shopping experience. However, I feel you can get past that, I'm sure Chris's Comics will provide that nerd from within a corner paradise to call their own. read more

I really like this shop. My brother suggested that we check it out after he had a positive experience here. Worth the drive from San Leandro and Oakland for us. Chris is a cool dude who knows all of his nerd topics, from Pokémon cards to comics to gaming, and while the store is definitely cramped and kind of a mess he at least knows where everything is as soon as you ask for it, suggesting to me that there's at least some order in his head to the chaos around the shop. That's really all that matters to me, rather than dealing with someone who has to guess and stand around scratching their head wondering where their product is amidst the sea of stuff. There's so much here that there really is almost something for everyone: comics, trading cards, collectibles, merchandise, a small selection of manga, new stuff, vintage stuff -- it's seriously worth coming here when you have time to waste so you can just peruse what Chris has and find some gems for you and/or someone in your life. My fiancé wanted me to keep an eye out for some Dungeons & Dragons rule books or other printed materials, so I asked Chris if he had anything. He said right away that he'd just sold all that he had, but then he instantly remembered he had a couple of vintage books left. He had two vintage Monster Manuals from the late 70s and early 80s, so I left with the one in better shape. For myself, I bought a couple of single Pokémon cards, clear card sheets, and a new Pokémon binder for my cards. One of the cards wasn't priced, so Chris looked up what it was going for online before quoting me on a price; he was fair, and he also felt like the asking price for most listings was too high, so he worked with me on giving me a better price. That's a big reason why I like this shop: Chris isn't looking to rip people off or take the fun out of collecting by scalping and reselling high. I much prefer to do business with guys like him over the self-absorbed, greedy resellers we often get here in the Bay Area. If you don't like clutter or messes, you're not going to like being in Chris's shop. It's definitely cramped, unkempt in some corners, but that doesn't bother me. I feel like he could do more to reorganize the shop for maximum space usage and a more comfortable shopping experience, but he's been around a long time now and his regulars don't seem to mind. Yo! Do you like finding buried gems and hidden treasures? Putting in work and a little elbow grease? This is the spot!! What can I say about Chris's comics? Their staff is super friendly and inviting. They have a huge selection of back issues. For those who like to dig, there's a section for that as well. I live relatively far from this spot but was in the area and decided to check out this location and one a few blocks away. Really appreciated the conversations with Chris. He was very informative, didn't get frustrated at me for asking a bunch of very similar questions and really just helped my experience there feel great and welcoming. I was also looking for a few specific books which he happened to have a copy of! This book was one of those "oh I'll just get it later books" then the price soared and now you don't want to be paying that much for a Disney comic... Needless to say, he was very fair with his price. This is something that I love about certain shops. They're fair. They don't care much about the eBay price, or if it's a "super hot book". Not everyone is looking for a quick buck and I'm super happy we could come to a very fair mutual agreement. If I lived closer, this would be my shop. read more

Not a good place to buy Pokémon single packs. Resealed packs. Nothing good out of the 10 sealed packs we purchased. Some cards looked liked like were switched out. One card was bent like a wave. Other cards had knicks and crimped bends oN The ends of the cards. Not even 1 V,Vmax, tandem Pokémon/trainer, reverse halos. I was not happy with the comic store that was closest to where I live. Poor service and poor rapport from the staff. This made me look for another store to pick up the most important issue to me of the year: Spawn 301. I chose Chris's Comics not because it was the second closest to me (which it wasn't) but because I noticed they open until 1am on Tuesday Nights. Even though I had to cross the Dumbarton bridge to get to the store it was well worth every dollar spent to cross back home. Chris provided exceptional service over the phone for a book that was complicated to find (virgin cover) and held it for me for the release date even though I did not have a subscription with the store. When I arrived to the store at 11:30pm for the Spawn 301 release he was extremely helpful and genuine to me, any additional requests I had on old back issues he was able to assist and create a memorable experience for me. I do not expect this type of service from comic book store's specially when considering I am not one of his regular customers. If you live aways from Fremont or across the bridge this is a store that must be visited at least once because I can guarantee you, you will want to come back. Lots of back issues to look through! What a dump. Place is unkepted and super messy. Place is so small I don't think more than 5 people could fit in it at a time. Might be a 10 x 15 room at best. If you manage to squeeze in you will notice an odor...probably from the dirty floors. It is so claustrophobic in there it's like being in a jail cell. This comic shop is for the owner and his homies. Bad experience at Chris's comics. Came in with my excited 11 year old son. Store is a disorganized disaster of comics that can't be viewed in this tiny comic store , due to fold out tables of people on their DS in the middle of store. Nobody ever asked if they could help us so we left and spent our money elsewhere. Box of empty beer bottles in clear view, I will never go back. Clearly they just care about their groupies and not a young boy excited to get some comics . read more

Pokemon tournament sundays at 5pm! The customer service here is excellent! I was super surprised when entering this store. Tons and tons of new and old comics! I must say its a little small but thats where the fun part comes in (digging for gold) They have a small back room of unorganized comics but came across some good ones. Make sure when you arrive that you have enough time on your hands to search through this store, it may take awhile =) Definately coming back here!
