This review is based on the bar service at lunch, as well as the chips and salsa. We stopped in here primarily for drinks as my partner wanted to try the Swirl margarita. I initially ordered a Negra Modelo beer (draft) from the menu. It was loud in there, so I was unable to hear that the man behind the bar apparently said "we only have it in a bottle". Since I missed that, I repeated myself (again it was loud and difficult to hear), at which point he repeated himself and I understood so I ordered a different beer. Maybe if the music wasn't so loud I could have heard him. No one's fault, but when it's on your menu, "we are out" is a different response than "we only have it in a bottle" since your menu says otherwise. My partners margarita wasn't really to his taste. Remarkably dry wine for a margarita that it supposed to have sangria in it (a usually sweet red wine) and my draft beer was kinda flat and not especially cold. The chips were okay, but the salsa had zero heat. None. Was totally mild and kinda bland for salsa. The best Mexican food I've had in over a decade! Chilli Verde had a homemade sauce that was delicious and my wife ate all of my tortillas. Her taco was great and she loved the tortillas. I'll start with the good points first, The chips and the salsa were good. The chips were nice and warm and salted well. Also the mango slushy margarita. That was really good. Unfortunately that's where it ends. The guacamole tasted like it was made with old avocados and needed more lime , salt and cilantro. I ordered iced tea and the tea tasted totally off, like it was made with metallic chemicals or something. For my main plate I ordered the carne asada. The steak looked like a fake piece of meat with the grill marks painted on. I tasted it to see if it tasted good but it just tasted off as well. It came with "chimichurri" but it was the worst chimichurri I've ever had. It came with grilled onions but they also tasted old and bad. I ate some of the homemade tortillas and the beans and rice. They were good. My husband ordered the carne asada tacos and the chicken tacos. They were ok, but very unseasoned. The service was okay, servers were very nice. However, It wasn't busy when we got there but it got busier, I had to call a few times for help, needed a new fork, then needed to flag them down for the check. All in all. Not great. I'm disappointed because I was really hungry and looking forward to a good Mexican meal. And to be clear, I don't like to leave negative reviews. Wowza Choaza! You were better than I expected. I usually have the bar set low for mall restaurants - usually overpriced, subpar flavors, low quality. BUT, Choza delivered on their tacos! Their tacos are on the pricier side, $4-$5.75 per taco, which I wasn't surprised considering we were at Bridgeport and it is a mall restaurant. I got 3 tacos - carnitas, chile verde, and grilled pescado. They feature homemade corn tortillas - a bonus! The tacos were bigger than I expected, and they were packed with meat. The meat was juicy, well seasoned, and the tortilla held up nicely - pillowing all the flavors and juiciness of the meat. I'm not the biggest fan of corn tortillas (I know, how dare I?) but these ones were goood - not too corny/gritty, just the right thickness to hold everything together. Service was attentive, our waitress refilled our waters and checked in with us. They give out complimentary chips and salsa (refills are $2), and the salsa was actually spicy and didn't just taste like seasoned marinara. Kudo points!! All in all, Choza was surprised me in the best way possible, and I would come back for their tacos! Although their other menu items look promising too. The food has a beautiful presentation and the taste is balanced if mild. The cerviche is not overpowered by lime and you can taste the fish and the picked veggie. Really disappointed with this restaurant, came in tonight with my wife before catching a movie.we walked in 30 minutes before they close. And I understand that no one wants to be "those people" we just came in wanting to grab a quick drink and an appetizer and be on our way. We ordered our drink after being sat for about 7-8 minutes all while the bartender/server sat at the bar talking to coworkers. We then waited for 10 minutes as he went back to talking to his coworkers. I can understand closing duties and such as a former server and current restaurant manager. We took a trip to Home Depot for supplies to renovate our laundry room and decided to grab some grub nearby. We parked in the structure and didn't have a destination in mind. We figured we'd just find a place as we walked by. We are from Southern California, so we're quite snobby about Mexican food. I try to go into it with the attitude of it not being Mexican food, but just hoping it's yummy food. They serve you chips and salsa up front...I always love that (yet overeat because of it). I know that I have a palate that needs more heat than the average gringo (must come from my half Asian side), so I asked for a hotter salsa. When we walked in, the gal at the front was nice and since the dining room was full, she asked if we wanted to sit in the bar area. We were happy to do so and she handed menus over to us. We get over to the bar and there were no seats available except for one table that hadn't been bussed. That happens in restaurants and was totally okay with us so we sit down. The tall waiter/bartender came over to us, didn't welcome us at all, and was extremely rude and immediately said "this table is dirty you can't sit here" so we kindly mentioned that we were told to go back there and again he said "you can't sit here the table is dirty". I don't know what he wanted us to do but he clearly didn't want us there. The table was understandable, however, treating your customers like that is not. I honestly was disappointed when my meal showed up at the table. I was expecting a normal quesadilla with maybe toppings on top. The presentation is perfect but did not realize what street style meant. ( I'm not a fan of this type of tortillas.) I've been waiting to try Choza for quite some time and I definitely recommend. It was 110% worth it and I could come here every week if possible. Their staff members are amazing, and provided just the perfect amount of service. Very genuine, courteous, and fun our hostess was. He did not check on us too little where it felt like we weren't helped, and not too much where it was over bearing. The food here is delicious. I recommend getting their Guac for an appetizer to go with the salsa that you get at the time of seating. Food comes out within a reasonable amount of time. I ordered two chicken tacos along with a side of rice (since I don't eat beans). Their drinks are also delicious and did not taste like cheap bottom shelf tequila. This easily could have been a 5 star review but the Mahi Mahi was a little dry. The rest of our experience was great. Our server was extremely friendly and attentive to our needs. The restaurant is bright and colorful with a beautiful open kitchen. The showcase display was impeccable with the array of tequila from Mexico. Now let's talk about the rest of the food we got to order. Fresh guacamole was excellent and served cold it was delicious so we decided to order another one that's how good it was. The spicy wings were phenomenal and had a nice kick to them. This is a great dish to share. The chicken burrito was enormous, the flour tortilla was fresh, the rice was cooked perfectly and the chicken was moist and I couldn't believe that I couldn't finish the whole thing. Quesadilla with beef was my favorite this was so good that I wanted it all to myself. This is a must order as I am writing this review about it I can still taste it. 1st impressions- Stopped in for dinner after a nearby movie only to run into a very confused hostess, who proceeded to seat a later arriving party ahead of us. She then told us it would be 30 minute wait while they cleared some tables. That didn't make any sense, and suddenly 30 minutes became 10. After being seated, we were pretty much ignored until I stopped a waiter to ask why a table seated after us had their drinks & an appetizer while we had menus & water. We were finally able to order margaritas, which were tasty but really seemed to be short on tequila. Our food, however, was excellent. Well prepared & generous portions. Update to Review 3/28/23: I received an email on March 28th on behalf of owner/management and they apologized, said they had spoken to staff about that night and said they agreed how we were treated was not acceptable. They also offered to refund our bill for that evening. I very much appreciate their response, that they took the time to reach out and that they are willing to reimburse us for the evening. I also appreciate that they are willing to further support their staff in learning better customer service. I realize that the restaurant industry is in a tough spot so I think it is a good sign that they are willing to work with their customers and staff for a brighter future. Original Review: I wanted to share some thoughts on our very first experience at Choza. After a movie tonight 3/23/23 at approximately 7pm-ish , at Bridgeport Village, my daughter and friend's son, who speaks very little English, decided to visit Choza. We were seated and our waitress was very kind and continued to be throughout the entire time we visited. However the child who we brought as a guest could not speak much English so tried to order with our waitress in Spanish. She offered that she could not speak Spanish, but most employees at Choza could. I then asked another person who worked there, who appeared to be management, but perhaps was not but definitely an employee, his name was Louis, if he spoke in Spanish. He said he did. I asked if he was able to stop by the table and let our friend's son order since English was not his first language. He replied that he was far too busy to help us and told us to ask our wait person. I explained our friend's son did not speak much English and since we were in an establishment that I knew there were Spanish speakers could we have someone come to our table and let him order in Spanish. He very curtly replied no and he was too busy to help us to order. I then went and sat down and took a mental note that we will never come here again due to how rude he was. It's ok to be too busy but I have not been so rudely spoken to in quite some time and I am a teacher so I don't say that lightly. There are far too many good Mexican restaurants in Portland Metro where the service is stellar and all people who are working in customer service are kind at these establishments. It's one thing to be busy but to blatantly not be accommodating to a Spanish speaker where there are Spanish speakers working, shows blatant prejudice and entitlement. After our wait person served our food, we were given no napkins or silverware. Our wait person was very kind and clearly very busy as she said she would be right back to give us silverware and began helping others and my daughter and our friends child sat for a bit staring at their food as they had no napkins or silverware. Louis ( I had asked our waitress his name after our first encounter) walked past us and stopped to put something in the computer and even though he was very rude the first time I assumed asking for silverware was a fairly easy request. He again looked around when I asked this and said he could not give us silverware, we needed to wait for our wait person as this was not his job. What a disappointing situation that someone could be so rude when asking for a simple spoon or helping our friend's child that could not speak English. So whether "Louis" is the owner, manager or an employee, I wanted to share how degrading that situation was for not only our friend's child as he heard Spanish speakers and did not know why someone would not help us but also to be treated so rudely when all we wanted was silverware and napkins. In a situation where you have paying customers I don't think it is too much to ask for a spoon and napkin. I strongly would not recommend this establishment. From Baja Fresh to Jefe in Lake O, to¿Por Qué No? to La Bonita, Cha Cha Cha and Nuestra Cocina in Portland, we have always been treated with kindness. Choza has now reminded us why we are loyal to so many other restaurants in the area. Go at your own risk. Food so so, customer service terrible. read more

We have a child with developmental disabilities, as well as craniofacial differences. They are literally not able to eat some foods and also have some sensory based issues around food. Our other children are excellent eaters, but this is a battle we choose not to fight with our youngest. We sat down at Choza ready to order food and drinks and asked for a kids menu and the waiter sneered at us and said "no, it's only for 10 and under". It's obvious the child has special needs, we weren't asking for kids menus for adults, we weren't trying to go cheap on our order, and there was literally nothing on the menu she would eat. We have never had that experience in any restaurant and it was in very poor form. Sometimes accommodations are necessary and I'm hoping it was just poor business practices and not discrimination. read more

Overall: Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience. The number one thing was the poor service and secondly was the food quality compared to the price. Atmosphere: The location is excellent. The restaurant indoors and outdoors is cozy. Inside it's a little more loud and echoey and it's an open kitchen. Being in such a good location, rent is probably a lot which drives up the prices of the food, but the quality of the food falls behind. Food: Had the super burrito. Every bite was just beans, rice and some chicken. For a "nicer" place like this I would expect a burrito with something to make it stand out like some guac, soucream, fries, just anything to level it up! The burrito wasn't even wrapped right and was falling apart from all sides and didn't hold the form or a burrito (see picture). The taste was also bland and basic. I've had way better burritos from food trucks for half the price. -Also tried the enchiladas and I was confused because the cheese enchiladas start at $13 (8/21) and to add meat is an additional $4. That just seemed a little excessive. $17 for the most basic chicken enchiladas was 100% not worth it. They were nothing special. The place was also sloppy (see picture). If I'm paying $17 for them I would at least expect a clean plate. -The crispy taquitos come with chefs selection of the day. We go ours with potatoes. The flavor was delicious. They were seasoned and fried perfectly. The only thing I would say is that the tortilla was a little too thick, making it hard to bite into. Service: Very poor service. The waitress we had was not attentive at all. She came to our table only three times. She got our order placed only after we waited for a bit and finally decided to call her over. We ordered the taquitos as an appetizer and apparently she gave them to the wrong table the first time so we got them later on after our food had already arrived. When the food itself arrived she didn't come by to give us utensils or fill our waters so I ended up waving over another waitress. When we were ready with our food we probably waited a solid 10minutes for her to finish sitting at the bar and talk to the bartender before I waved her over to let her know we wanted the check. This experience was definitely not a fact of 'she was having a bad day'. You could tell she was careless, put in little effort and she gave off the impression that she didn't want to be working there. Maybe I should have given this place a 1 star? read more
