I tried. I really did. I live directly across the street from this shopping center so chopstix is a very short walk. I have been many times, and have sampled much of the menu. Let me also say that I am a little bit of a sushi snob. I am from Southern California, which has some of the best sushi restaurants in the country. So I am a little bit understanding if a place like this doesn't do sushi in the 99 percentile (which chopstix definitely does NOT do, their sushi is only edible if it's one of their "monster cream cheese bacon bits whatever" rolls; the nigiri and sashimi is just bad). But none of the Japanese food on their menu is good. When I say that it has no flavor, I really mean it. Even fail safe bets like chicken teriyaki are downright flavorless. This is one of the worst restaurants in the area and, for some unknown reason, it is packed all the time. People in Perry hall love it. Trust me, the Japanese food in this place sucks. Stick to the fried Chinese food that they serve (the only reason I gave them 2 stars). Or, better yet, walk across the street to the Indian restaurant or the delicious Mexican restaurant. Update: I actually went back. I ordered Chinese food this time. Orange chicken. Can't mess that up, right? Well about halfway though the meal I took a few bits of the rice only to find some lovely pieces of plastic integrated into the rice mix. AWESOME. Not. I'll attach a picture to verify. So, the gimmick at Chopstix is.... Gimmicks and Chinese restaurants.... I'm sure it's a consequence of Americanized Chinese food being commoditized to the soul-killing point of being completely uniform in taste, texture, and presentation across nearly all Chinese restaurants. For the customer, Chinese food is absolutely safe and promises predictable quality, but I imagine PR and encouraging brand loyalty is a nightmare for the individual restaurants. If the food doesn't set a 'China King' apart from the 'Peking Garden' down the road, what's left to promote other than decor, location, or a gimmick? I've seen the gimmick of free wine used to good effect elsewhere, but here the gimmick is, appropriately, chopsticks. At Chopstix, a customer has the option to store his/her own personal chopsticks (packaged in a protective box) on a purpose-built set of shelves by the hostess's desk. The decor is nice, and I guess this in addition to having one's own, familiar chopsticks in hand while sitting down to eat promotes bonding. The Chinese food is solid, but you already knew that. The sushi needs work. The quality of the fish seems fine, but it's frequently not cut well. The avocados have been under-ripe on more than one occasion, and the rolls don't stay bound. When I'm consistently presented with rolls in which most of the pieces' nori wrappers have sprung open, I conclude that the kitchen staff are not professionals. Some nice characteristics: they offer different rolls than the other close-by Chinese restaurant (sometimes the desire for variety is everything), they're fast, and they're close - so picking up takeout is relatively painless. I don't store my chopsticks on their shelving, but even if I did it wouldn't change my basic approach to this restaurant: I'll partake without fear if I find myself there under the influence of others, but I won't seek it out on my own. read more

Eh... I wanted something relatively light for dinner so a friend and I came here to get some sushi. We shared a seaweed salad and my friend got some sushi-makes-me-squeamish dumb "sushi" (california roll, cucumber roll, and the like) and I ordered a spicy scallop roll and a yellowtail and scallion roll. The seaweed salad was sitting above a giant bed of radish noodles (or whatever you want to call it - radishes cut up to look like noodles) so it looked like a generous portion but it was rather meager. My spicy scallop roll barely had any scallop in them. There were some pathetic pieces of scallop but they used a lot of that fake crab (krab) stuff as filler. The yellowtail roll (they forgot the scallion in my order) was decent, but if they messed that up, I'd be pretty upset. We eat our food and dessert and leave typically. The server was rude, and just smirked at us the whole time. After spending $100 in this place she told us, " we are closing now!" Thoroughly mediocre. We stepped in with pretty high hopes for this place, but were confused by a wall near the entrance filled with saved/reserved chopsticks. I guess because of the name. I had the "Super Meal" with Shrimp and Cashew Nuts (pretty bland, really), which included a bowl of standard soup - I had the egg drop with corn kernels, which tasted exactly the same as everywhere else - and a couple pieces of crab wonton, which I gave to my wife and kid, and shrimp toast, which was probably the best thing I had here. My kid said the wontons weren't as good as Pei Wei's. My kid had chicken and broccoli, with chicken rice soup as an appetizer. My wife had a spicy tuna roll for an appetizer, and house special fried rice for the main course. Nobody thought anything was better than our local delivery place, Asian Taste, and yet it was more expensive and we weren't eating it at home. All of us left with ample leftovers, though. The service was poor. I can't say atrocious because they got our orders right, but we didn't get checked on at any point, and there was just a bad attitude, like the waitress hated her job. Took the family for Sunday night dinner based on the strength of Yelp and other web reviews. Even knowing that this is an Americanized Chinese restaurant, I was underwhelmed. "Best Sushi spot in NE Baltimore Co." is akin to saying "Best Barbecue in SW Santa Clara Co." or "Best Jewish Deli in Maui" -- you're going to be disappointed if you're used to better. I've been eating around NE Baltimore for six months now and the folks here do Greek, Italian, seafood, Jewish, Southern and even barbecue really well. But we know better than to expect authentic Chinese or Japanese food -- but was hoping for quality Americanized Chinese at least. We ordered shrimp in lobster sauce, beef chow fun (dry style) and mu shu chicken (the wife did not want pork). (I won't ding them for the inedible entrees ordered off the kids menu, as you rather *expect* those items to be mediocre at $4.99 each.) The shrimp with lobster sauce only had frozen peas & carrots for vegetable and very runny eggs -- no peppers, onions, and very light on seasoning. The beef chow fun was better, but the onions were very underdone. The chicken in the mu shu was very gamy and we needed all of the hoisin sauce to hide the taste. The mu shu wrappers/pancakes were very dry so they broke up when used; our young kids were sad when their "mooshoo burritos" started to break up from the start. Apparent food shortcomings aside, the service at Chopstix was welcoming and wonderful. Having just visited family & friends in the Bay Area, Seattle, Vancouver and NYC, you accept that by and large, Asian Americans don't live in Baltimore County in any significant numbers; accordingly your options for sating your (Asian) food cravings are equally limited. We have had better luck dining in nearby Howard County for Asian cheap eats: in Ellicott City, we get our fix for chigae, dolsot bibimbap, and Korean fried chicken when visiting nearby H-mart. For our Japanese fix, we schlep to Ft Lee, NJ where the closest Mitsuwa is located. (We like their food court and what we save on groceries offset the cost of extra driving.) I'm still looking for good Indian deserts (rasmalai, burfi, kheer, gulab jamun) but little luck so far. PS -- I saw people BYOB so that's a plus in my book. read more

Sucked! Feel like we just threw $65 down the drain. My son ordered the pad Thai (which is a favorite of his) he received a huge plate of noodles that tasted like someone dumped a box of table pepper all over it. We explain to the waitress and ask her to return it. Another employee carried the plate back to our table and kind of interrogated us. I went to Chopstix for lunch today with a couple of my friends from work. It is a very nice looking Chinese restaurant, much better looking than what you would normally see in the area (with the exception of PF Changs.) Our server was very nice and prompt, and the food was delicious! I highly recommend the Pearl River Roll and the Baltimore Roll. The Chopstix Roll was good, but too similar to the Baltimore Roll to be worth the extra money. My friend had the Chicken with Broccoli and Wonton Soup and said both were delicious. The reason this place got only 3 stars was because we arrived at 12:10, expecting to get back to work on time at 1pm. Perhaps we did not anticipate how long it takes to prepare sushi, but DO NOT GO UNLESS YOU HAVE 90 MIN to 2 HOURS to spend there. At 12:45 we had to ask them to box the food and take the check for us. We left at 12:55 and came back late for work still hungry because we not been able to eat. I like Chopstix a lot. I go often because it's got the best sushi I can find around here. I rarely eat the Chinese food when I go because I really go for the sushi. The service is excellent.I have no complaints about my dining experiences there. However, as a sushi fanatic I can say I'm disappointed with the lack of creativity with specialty rolls and dishes. I'm so sick of sushi chefs slapping "special sauce" (read: spicy sauce) and thinking they've done something. I make more creative sushi at home than I think Chopstix does. I think they should step out of the box a bit in regards to their sushi recipes/combinations and it would be an awesome place. read more

What they say is true: 3rd times a charm! Went here on a date last night with my bf. It was excellent!! We started with freshly brewed full leaf green tea and ordered sushi. The sushi was amazing! I don't know what happened the other times I was here or what...but we were very pleased with our meal. I was hesitant on going back here since I had a HUGE sushi craving and didn't want to be disappointed! This place was great! My advice would be don't get anything dipped in tempura (if raw fish is involved---it slightly cooks the fish) I think that was my major disappointment before. I am a sushi-fanatic and happen to love all sorts of Chinese food as well ... based on that, this place is just.. "Eh". Here's what I like: 1. The service is pretty prompt and friendly a. There is small downside to being fast though, sometimes your orders are rushed and done in incorrectly 2. The food generally falls between ok and pretty good. a. The flavor of their stuff is not bad, but I did have 1 piece of fish once that was kind of ready to be tossed. 3. The restaurant is pretty clean** (see dislikes below) 4. Specialty rolls are pretty affordable. Here is what I don't like (MOSTLY based on the SUSHI preparation) : Dear Chopstix Sushi Chefs, 1. I hate having my sushi rice SMASHED into my nori. There is something texture related to this... I just don't like my rice to feel like mochi. 2. WASH your hands after touching things that other people may not be able to eat.. (i.e., if you just touched shellfish of any kind, stuck your hands in all kind of different sauces with mayo- there are people with allergies to both shellfish and eggs ya know). 3. Your scrap meat that you use inside rolls looks kind of old and gross (I was sitting at the sushi bar) maybe you should use higher quality meat in your rolls.. Some people (like me) would take their rolls apart just to see the quality of the meat inside. 4. That rag that you use to clean off your board is pretty gross and brown. It looks unsanitary and you should probably change it out. 5. Cutting your rolls on the thin side and OVERLOADING them with rice may appease the non-sushi fanatics and save you money, but your reviews will start to go south if you keep it up. I am really surprised to read some of the reviews because to my knowledge, Chopstix is supposed to be one of the best Chinese/Sushi places in the county. I will give it to some that the sushi isn't the best. In fact, I rarely (if ever) get sushi here. The Chinese food is what makes it worth visiting. They have the best chicken wonton soup I have ever had. Most places make the broth so that it tastes like warm water with really soggy wontons. At Chopstix, they actually make the broth with a chicken based flavor and the wontons come out great! The best deal is the "Super Meal", which includes a soup of choice, two shrimp toasts and crabmeat wontons, and some type of normal Chinese dish served with white or fried rice. This meal ranges between $11.99-$13.99, depending on what your main dish is. In my opinion, they give you a lot of food for the price. I have never had a problem with the service here and I take everyone I know at one point in our relationship! If you are uncertain about dinning here, I recommend going during lunch, perhaps on a Sunday between 11am-3pm. They have a really great Lunch special that, in my opinion, is "cheap"! Comes with soup, main dish, and an egg or spring roll. Oh, and I forgot to mention: They have hot tea here that they serve in those awesome Asian-style teapots! I'm gonna give this review an interesting twist. I rate it at 2 stars, but my 70 something mom says 4 stars and that all was "tasty," even the burnt spareribs. She says she likes em' burnt. We started off with the Ten Ingredient Wonton soup, which arrived to the table lukewarm - though abundant with veggies, fat shrimp and wontons (not tasting homemade). The tiniest nugget of meat was found buried within the flap of folded noodle and the broth was reminiscent of low sodium College Inn brand. Mom craved spareribs and being that its difficult for her to chew, specifically asked that the meat arrive without the bone. True to their word, spareribs arrived bone in- tact, crisp, burnt around the edges and another completely burnt. She happily exclaimed to me, "that's the way I likem'," as she gnawed at them. I pray this isn't me, in another 20 or so years. I ordered a side of gyoza - tasting and looking very much like frozen, store bought. Our entrée, shrimp chow fun - a massive plateful of wide, thick noodles, a child's handful of shrimp and an infant's handful of bean sprouts. The food here is pretty good, not great but pretty good. The sushi is also descent, but again, not the greatest either. I started off with the dinner combination of kung pao chicken which also included 2 crab rangoons, 2 pieces of shrimp toast and a cup of hot and sour soup. The crab rangoons and shrimp toast were both very good, while the soup was mediocre. The kung pao chicken had a nice taste and used all white meat chicken but also included filler vegetables and a sauce that was not traditionally used in kung pao. It was still good though. In term of sushi, I tried the dragon roll (eel and avocado) and some spicy tuna roll. Both were good but could have bit larger and rolled better. I'm also having a hard time remembering what exactly the sushi tasted like because it was a bit run of the mill. There was however some interesting rolls on the menu which I would be curious to try in the future. All in all, it was a good meal and the ingredients were good quality. Can't figure this place out. First couple times were amazing but shortly after have become just edible or inedible, especially food with vegetables in it. I don't mind onions but when it becomes half the meal then it's a bit to much. You will get a dish with onion and then if it has noodles or anything then you will get small onions and onions the same shape as the noodles so the taste is only onion flavored. They have a fascination with onion and dipping sauce that tastes like sake sock water. The dumplings there are great but now the sauce with it tastes like feet so I just make my own so I can somewhat enjoy my meal. read more

The green tea was wonderful and I know about teas. This was a delight. The Shrimp dish was surprising -- there was 19 large shrimp on the plate along with veggies. I really liked this place. I like Chinese entree dishes and my daughter is hooked on sushi rolls. Here at Chopstix in PerryHall you can get both. I ordered a Baltimore Roll and my daughter got the California and Bay rolls. They were all very good. We asked to have the roll cut into small pieces and they did that for us. In addition, I ordered the chicken with string beans and it was very good. The string beans were bright green and crunchy... Not typically what I like ... but the flavor was excellent. The sodas were bottomless... So you can drink as much as you want for 1 price. Our total bill came to a few dollars under $50 without tip. Service was good, food arrived quick and hot. I would definitely come here again. This place was fairly busy for a Thursday evening so it may be very busy on weekends. read more

I love this place. Since I work in White Marsh it's pretty convenient to go there to get food for dinner or even food for lunch. They also have the option to eat in. The food is very good the staff is friendly. My favorite is the crab meat wontons chicken noodle soup and general Cho's chicken which is made of white meat. When you eat in they also give you a little bowl of crunchy noodles and dipping sauce to eat while you're waiting for your food it's clean in there and has a good atmosphere. read more
