Looking for something a little different than the regular Italian dinners we eat in Central Jersey, my husband, mother and I ventured out to Cholula. Let's get the more negative stuff out of the way. The atmosphere was nothing special at all. There were booths and tables but it looked like it had been a pizza joint at some point. There were bright paper/cardboard cutouts with the names of dishes all over the wall. I found that to be a little odd. As others mentioned, the service wasn't great. Despite being the only customers in the restaurant at certain times, our server lacked attentiveness and seemed a little lackluster overall. Once we were finished eating, it took a really long time to get our dishes cleared and to get a check. Now let me get to the good stuff...the food. The complimentary chips and salsa were good but standard to any Mexican restaurant. Our dishes shined with authenticity and flavor. Here's the rundown: Tacos Cholula (corn tortilla filled with beef, chicken and spicy pork with cilantro, onion, Mexican string cheese and guacamole): I loved the mixed meat combo. They didn't try to grind it up and make it one meat, there were pieces of everything I mentioned above. The tortilla was authentic and the string cheese was a different touch. This was probably one of the better authentic style tacos I've had. Chiles Rellenos (Pblano peppers stuffed with Oaxaca cheese covered in a traditional Mexican sauce): This was different than any other chile rellenos dish I've ever had. It was smothered in melty cheese and mole sauce on the outside. The pepper itself was smaller and didn't really seem overly stuffed. Whatever was going on, it was delicious. My mom and I thought it to be like a Mexican version of eggplant parm. Carne Enchilada Ranchera (marinated pork steak with cactus, jalapeno, fresh cheese, onion, avocado, 2 eggs, rice and beans): So this dish was by far the most unique thing we all tried. Disappointingly, we either didn't have cactus in the dish or it just blended in with everything else. The pork steak was a little tough but really flavorful. I liked adding a block of cheese and a fried egg to the mix. I really can't compare the entire dish to anything else I've had, but it was a really fun combination of different things. Generally, I wish our server asked us for our rice and bean selections. It's on us as well since we forgot to specify, but I would have preferred black beans to red. No biggy. They were still tasty and honestly there was so much food that we definitely left some rice and beans behind. Everyone in the group enjoyed the meal and I would definitely eat at Cholula again. Well maybe not in the actual restaurant. They are a BYOB, however I can envision bringing this meal at home with the margaritas flowing and nowhere else to go. read more

The food at Cholula is authentic and excellent. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. The burrito is my favorite and its enough for three people. The pricing is insanely cheap. Near Taco Bell pricing without the fake meats. The only thing that has changed at Cholula is the service. The wait staff is awful. My parents are obsessed with this place and they have pretty much given up on El Mason in favor of this place. Being a big fan of El Mason I was skeptical but actually pleasantly surprised. Everything on the menu is cheap. I mean like dirt cheap. All tacos are $2 a piece and the have all sorts of interesting meats you don't usually see (goat, tripe, tongue). I went with the spicy pork and tongue, and both were really excellently flavored with super tender meat and generously filled. Now, what you don't get here is any type of atmosphere or service. The decor is non-existent (with placemats showing all of the US presidents - not sure why this would be at a Mexican place). The service is non-existent. They don't refill your drink, they dont check on you... Pretty much they just don't care. So with such bad service why is this worth 4 stars? Because for $2.00 you get a really freaking tasty, (seemingly) authentic taco with a lot of non-standard meat choices. Value here cannot be beat and the flavor does not disappoint. read more

Second time here and will definitely be back. I love mexican food, but stick to the foods I know. Husband and I ordered the nachos, tamales and crispy tacos. The nachos are generous with fresh ingredients. This place love avocados as do I. I generous portion of avocado on the nachos, cheese, meat, lettuce etc. The nacho chips are thick and crispy -- could be saltier (but I like salt). the tamales were wrapped in green corn husks and were flat and a bit soggy. No chili powder in them, but they were seasoned with the spicier salsa verde. My tacos were excellent. The shell was light and crispy, the ingredients were topped perfectly and very fresh. The service was very attentive and pleasant. The price was beyond reasonable. Nachos, 2 tamales, 4 crispy tacos one soft drink and 2 glasses of water -- $20. I saw the breakfast menu and would love to come back for some huevos and frijoles sometime. :) read more

Had the carnitas, spicy pork, al pastor (pineapple pork), chicken and beef (suadero i think). Carnitas are good, but a little bland. Spicy pork had awesome flavor, but a little tough, like an over cooked pork chop. Al pastor was good. Chicken was good, mostly dark meat, but good. Beef was ok, bland. Salsa verde is good and spicy. Red sauce is HOT! Their rice and beans are really good, nice flavor. The spicy pork empanadas looked so good in someone's picture, and the spicy pork was good in my burrito so I got them the other night. They were GROSS and I seriously regretted eating one afterwards. They were gelatinous and fatty. It made me nauseous. Very greasy too. The first time we ordered they forgot my guacamole on both burritos, and there was a small piece of plastic bag in my lettuce. But I forgave them and they made it right. So I went back, and things were better but they forgot my two orders of rice and beans, but I called and got a refund. So much more authentic than several other not to be named Mexican places on Main Street in Freehold, and also cheaper. First off, if you want a sit down meal, don't eat here. It's not dirty, it's just not a sit down and eat kind of place. This place is a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. Second, the pico de gallo and salsa verde are unreal. I'm not going to tell you what you should order b/c half of the stuff on the menu I have only heard of (red or white Caldo), while others I never heard of (goat and quail). I went with the 3 Cholula style tacos which I could only eat 2 b/c they were stuffed plenty with chicken, pork, AND sausage, guac, mexican string cheese (yes there is such a thing) and lettuce and salsas, which I added. And of course, any decently authentic Mexican place double wraps the taco tortillas. This place also has Tortas and Pupusas on the menu which I will try next time, in addition to trying as many different taco filings as possible (tripa included). If you want Tex Mex, go elsewhere. If you want more authentic Mexican food than, so far, the other places in the area, hit up Cholula...and yes, they deliver. read more

I am so happy to have a Mexican Restaurant in my neighborhood. The food is very good and totally enjoyable. They do deliver which is a plus even though we usually order, take out and enjoy the food at home. We have ordered many different dishes & appetizers and have always been pleased. The prices are incredibly reasonable which is a huge plus. Would recommend this place to anyone. The restaurant is not really very large but always crowed with people, families & others waiting for take out. So happy they are doing well and close by to where we live. I started checking the order lately before I left since I live about 20 minutes from this restaurant. I got tired of having to drive back to get food I paid for they forgot to include. If you want authentic Mexican food, this is definitely the place to go. This place was a nice change from the typical Americanized Mexican joint that plague my urban surroundings. I came here with my mom and brother. He had the chicken chimichanga (sooo good), I had the enchiladas con mole (omg so good, but pretty spicy) and my mom not one to stray from our Salvadorian roots opted for the pupusas. Cholula has decent food for the area. I ordered the tacos cholula and my friends ordered different burritos, we also had some chicken empanadas for our appetizer. The taco was a bit dry but my friends seemed to enjoy their burritos. One of my friends said the empanadas tasted like chicken pot pie. Service is super slow/lacking. Our table also didn't get any water until the appetizers came, which was about 30 minutes after we ordered. I have passed Cholula's many times going between our house and Freehold traveling the back roads. Today I decided to try it. Chips, homemade salsa, a very spicy green sauce and what looked like beans were bought right out to the table. I ordered the chicken quesadillas. I have only had them with chicken and cheese and these were made with chicken, green and red peppers, onions and mushrooms (which I do not like and wish it was on the menu and I just took them out when I saw one before I bit into one). There were 4 nice size pieces. I am by myself most of the time and when I am out I will stop by take out places alone. read more

I walked in to pick up a takeout order that should have been ready 10 minutes before I walked in. The woman at the register asked what I ordered. When I started listing the food I ordered, she simply walked away. Never asked my name. After sitting at the counter for five minutes I just walked away and sat at a table where other lost soles were waiting for their takeout orders as well. I overheard a girl at a table complaining that she had been sitting for 30 minutes waiting for nachos. After sitting for fifteen minutes another waitress came and asked me what I was doing. So good! This has become THE Mexican place for my boyfriend and I. He usually gets the plato placero and I usually get the burrito poblano, and we share yuca frita con carnitas (which does take a little longer to cook, but the waitress told us and we are fine with that since it's so good!)
