I know that this place is popular and I appreciate that they have gluten-free churros as someone who is a celiac. Unfortunately I absolutely hated the taste of both the milk and dark chocolate dipping chocolate at this location. While it looks pretty, something about the flavor reminds me of cocoa packets. I really disliked the chocolate. I also ordered a ham and cheese sandwich on gluten-free bread. It didn't look good but it tasted okay. There was a bit of a language barrier as we had ordered in English at the cash register (they do have bilingual staff) but my (Mexican) Spanish isn't good enough to understand the questions that the wait staff was asking in Spain Spanish after we sat down at the table. Apparently our choices weren't put on the ticket that tells the kitchen what to make, just general things like "gluten-free sandwich" was on the ticket without printing out the choice I had already made at the cash register. Obviously I do not expect staff in Spain to speak English whatsoever. I will say though that it would definitely improve customer experience if the choices or variations that we chose at the cash register were printed on the ticket that goes to the kitchen so that staff didn't need to confirm choices again with the customer after they already paid and were sat at their table. We didn't have much of a line when we got to this place and ordering was quick. We paid at the register before sitting down. The ambiance is nice and reminds me of the ice cream parlor in Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco, USA. Visited April 2025
An old fashioned coffee shop that has been in business since 1902! Well known for home made Churros and desserts plus they have gluten free Churros!! You place your order as you enter by scanning the QR code. We had a cup of chocolate for dipping,coffee with almond cream and gluten free Churros. They serve the gluten free options on a black plate . Everything is fresh and the staff were friendly and helpful. A must stop while in Madrid!
Best tasting place for hot chocolate and porras. Service is quick. It's busy, but clean. We have tried the other more famous place, but did not like it. This hot chocolate tastes milky, and thick. The hot chocolate tastes best with the porras because the porras are thick enough to absorb the hot chocolate. I visited this place 3 times in our 1 week trip. It's pretty good. Highly recommend.
Tourist here, so take with a grain of salt. However, I am a chocolate aficionado and actually do get chocolate bars and drinking chocolate everywhere I go (throughout North America and Europe). I was recommended this place from a friend that lives in Barcelona, so out of any the other chocolate/churro places to go, I was told this is one of the better ones. However, the chocolate lover in me would firmly state that this was hands down the most mediocre drinking chocolate I've had. I thrive on dark chocolate, and theirs had no body to it, honestly not much to it all, I've never not finished a cup but this was the first. The service was ok, they got me what I asked for eventually but they see so many tourists they didn't really care when they originally gave me the wrong things. Ambiance: cafe-esque, except you walk in and order at the door, a staff member will serve you stuff at your table, and you can see people behind the counter preparing churros. Anyway, this place is likely fine for the average visitor but don't expect a great chocolate experience. Post visit: I tried the 85% chocolate bar, it's actually high quality. My guess is the vats they serve the drinking chocolate have been out too long or they're diluted too much. But I would endorse you stopping in to buy their chocolate bars, I'd rate an 8.5/10.
Surprisingly good churros and chocolate. We were pretty stuffed from lunch, so opted to get a single churro with chocolate. I wish we ordered more. The churro is pretty small/ thin, and it's crispy on the outside, soft inside. Love the crunch. The chocolate was really thick and on the sweeter side, though not too sweet or rich that one couldn't drink it. Would return again if im ever back in Madrid.
Allergy friendly churros!! My son for the first time ever got to eat at a restaurant and have his very own egg, dairy, nut, gluten free dessert..churros & chocolate! It was so exciting that we could come just for him. And he had a slushy! He took some to go. They were great! Friendly staff!
We decided to come to 1902 because they have vegan chocolate available, which was so exciting for me. I love it when restaurants add a vegan option si mixed groups can visit and one person isn't stuck eating dry churros. We arrived on a Saturday morning and found a short line. We grabbed a table and our coffees and churros came to us quickly, one item at a time. The churros were so crispy and delicious and the vegan chocolate was one of the best. The restaurant itself is busy and bustling, with many people chatting over their morning churros. The video screens tell the story of the business and show videos of the churros being made. When we were leaving, we noticed the line had gotten quite long, but I think it's worth the wait!
Like their rival around the corner, this churrascaria serves up delicious and incredibly fresh churros plain without sugar or cinnamon which is popular in the U.S., but they are so fresh and perfect you don't need anything else. On a television screen, a video shows patrons the process by which the different versions are made, or you can watch a live person behind a window actually creating the churros! Popular dishes include the Ración de churros for only two Euros that comes with four churros and melted chocolate for dipping, or the Ración de porras with four Madrid-style porras (churro-like pastries shaped like large teardrops instead of sticks). The one major advantage they have on their competition are the stunningly delicious churro ice cream sandwiches, absolutely a perfect 10!
Based on my read of other reviews, this is an American 5, but a European 4. Probably because tests are harder in Europe. My wife and I visited on a Monday evening at 9 pm. There was no line and very few patrons when we arrived. We ordered at the point of entry, like all are required to do, then we grabbed a seat. We ordered Churros, Chocolate, and coffee. Our waiter brought the food out pretty quickly. The Churros were very crunchy and light and the chocolate was thick and slightly bittersweet, which we really enjoyed. If you are visiting from America, the Churros don't have sugar or cinnamon on them. They are basically fried batter. My wife and I really enjoyed the Churros and the experience.
Maybe it was lick of timing, but there was no line and plenty of seats when we came in the afternoon. One of the best if not the best churros con chocolate we've had in Spain. Churros wad hot and freshly made crunchy. Chocolate sauce was good. read more
Very touristy, but the lines move quickly and tables free up easily as well. The churros are a manageable size, and you can choose between what types of chocolate dipping you want. I went with the dark chocolate, and it was almost not sweet enough (but a good choice if you want to eat your fried dough-and-chocolate treat without feeling too heavy). read more
Even though I'm on a low carb diet. Had to go try their churros. The place was packed Even late at night and there were long lines during the day as well. The churros wasn't too sweet just Leith and crispy. Great with hot chocolate. read more

Wanted to find a good place to get the churros and chocolate dip and decided that this was the right place for it. We ordered the churros with chocolate dip, pan con tomate, and ham & cheese toast. All wonderful and delicious. read more

Surprisingly good churros and chocolate. We were pretty stuffed from lunch, so opted to get a single churro with chocolate. I wish we ordered more. Freshly made churros FTW. So much better!! We went to a churro place yesterday and that one was a world different from the churros here! Here, their churros are much lighter and the chocolate is so much better as well! Quick service with great quick pick me up read more

Our waiter brought the food out pretty quickly. The Churros were very crunchy and light and the chocolate was thick and slightly bittersweet, which we really enjoyed. If you are visiting from America, the Churros don't have sugar or cinnamon on them. They are basically fried batter. My wife and I really enjoyed the Churros and the experience. read more
My family and I came in after not wanting to stand in line for San Gines, and we had a grand ole time! There were two lines formed (one for dine in and the other take out), so I thought that was pretty proficient as we were so confused about the THREE lines outside the other place. You order up front and then grab a seat wherever available, so we opted to head upstairs as there were 6 of us. There was still a good amount of availability considering the line we waited in, and our order came in fairly quickly. We had ordered the chocolate con leche, chocolate negre, chocolate suizo, chocolate sin lactosa, and some churros. I had personally gotten the con leche, and boy was it THICC. I personally love my chocolate like this though and didn't find it to be too sweet. Paired with the churros, and it was chef's kiss. Keep in mind that the churros are not sweet though as they are meant to be eaten with the chocolate. They are less greasy than other places too, so I appreciate that as well! Staff were presentable and courteous, so no complaints from me! read more

I literally came to Spain for the churros!!! Okay so I will say I was confused at first because I'm not used to churros this style. So the way they do it Spain edition is you get plain churros and you dip it into chocolate. I thought I would be overwhelmed with the cup of chocolate but it was so good. It wasn't even too sweet, but sweet enough. The churros are freshly made in front of you and the chocolate is served warm. I could live off of these. The service was great, it was a very busy place but they still made you feel welcomed. It's a cute coffee shop with a great vibe. I also tried the bombom coffee and it paired perfectly with my churros. Can't wait to be back to Spain to eat another amazing churro! read more

I first visited 1902 when I was studying abroad in college at the end of the 2000s. I was pleased find out that it has not changed much in the past 14 years. I met my homestay family here shortly after getting off the plane in Madrid and it was quite the experience. We all got churros of one kind or another. Some of them got coffee, while I got their famous chocolate. Valor up the street was packed and the line went around the block so we opted to go here instead. I am so glad we did. The inside of this place is very authentically Spanish and the service was speedy. Do not miss this place (or a nearby chocolateria like it). This is a key Spain experience and a great way to start your day! read more

Although Chocolateria 1902 has been serving a diverse menu across two floors for over 100 years the bulk of fourth generation owner Don Gabi's business comes from Churros con Chocolate, and while San Ginés may be more "popular" with tourists most locals seem to prefer the store on Calle de San Martín. Made fresh from open to close, a visible kitchen in the Sol neighborhood continuously churning out fried Dough throughout a thirty-minute visit, it was on a waiter's suggestion that "dos Porras" were presented, their intrinsic flavor more complex than most even before dipping in a thick blend of three hot Cocoas while a "Flower" with Honey doubled down on texture across its layers. read more

Churros and chocolate are perfect! What is good is that upstairs they serve very good meals - for lunch and dinner at an excellent price! Downstairs at the entrance is the churros if that is all you want to have. You can watch them make it. Very good and authentic with excellent chocolate. They too sell their chocolate mix that you can drink. read more

As you enter , you need to have WiFi to see the menu. Thank God for the nearby shop decathlon for their free wifi. Foe someone like us ( tourist). We ordered the Churros , porras with chocolate. Loved the churros , don't care much about the porras( too oily for someone my age ) but loved the service. She was so nice even gave us a heart shaped churros Wish we could come back and try the rest of the pastry. Coffee was also good. read more
I had such high hopes for the chocolate and churros here. However, when we got the chocolate, it was very watery, though it still tasted good. We went and asked the server behind the counter and he explained that it was because we got the bottom of the hot chocolate batch which is not as good. The first chocolate from each batch is the best. However, the manager claimed it is natural and refused to provide us with a new cup. I compared our chocolate to the people before and from the new batch and there is a clear difference in the thickness of the hot chocolate. Disappointed that they would not provide their best product. Secondly, there was not consistent quality in the churros, our plate had churros fried in different colors showing a clear inconsistency in frying. Sad that such a reputable place places insufficient focus on their quality. read more

If you've never had a choco-gasman, I think I had 3 on the first taste at 1902. The hot chocolate is thick like cake batter. The Churros are warm, moist, and crunchy. The smell alone is enough to make my pants dance... pervs, I'm referring to having to loosen my belt cause I'm gonna kill 2 orders. The place is packed, so be prepared to wait. The staff is qUick, yet friendly. It may feel lIke they are short with you, but they are simply that busy all day. Wether you like hot chocolate or you like churros, yOu gotta do it inside 1902. read more
I enjoyed the chill vibe here more than Gines, because you can actually hear your company and not feel squished at the tables. Their churros are presented in a "loop" form and come in 4 to an order. It makes for more interesting photos but the important fact is that they're also super delicious. We ordered the milk chocolate dipping chocolate but we should've gone for the dark. Loved it! If we had more time, we would've come back here again. Because they're not 24 hrs, I don't think they're as popular as Gines, but I really like this place! Definitely try this spot for churros too in your churro quest! read more
