We had scheduled our wedding, and we were pleased to learn that the cake would be included AND it would be by a local baker in Wall. Having lived in Belmar until I left for college, I was very familiar with the area, and knew right where to find CC.
We had a bit of a lightning wedding, since my new restaurant was about to open in 4 months and I wanted to be done with wedding stuff. We booked out the room at the hotel and then headed straight to the bakery, after having the event manager call over and ask if it was alright to come over; which she said it was, and that she'd be there all afternoon.
Up to now, things had been fairly smooth. We had a plan, and even though we had been checking off the Wedding Check-list faster then ever though possible (band, pianist, hotel room, rings, menu, tux & dress in 48 hours), we finally hit our snag. We arrived at the bakery later in the afternoon, but still well before closing. We asked for the woman who the hotel had spoken with, but ''because we took so long to get there'' (20-25 mins from Freehold), she had left for the day. The girls behind the counter brought us some cake books and showed us to a side room. We looked over the books, and my wife made the decisions on the decorations, color, tiers, etc. She wrote out how we wanted it, took the cake numbers for reference and I asked to leave a message for the owner. The bakery called her for us, and handed me the phone. I'm not sure if with word "Diva" could be accurate, but clearly the amount of gall I had to speak to her after she had left was appalling enough to have her scoff at our selection and say that if we wanted to return in 2 weeks for a 45 minute appointment so she could 'speak to me about this then,' we could. We live in Boston, so our local availability was difficult. I did explain this to her, probably fairly directly, but I stayed polite; as at least one of us is actually used to the hospitality industry. She blew off the request for an earlier time, and ignored the list of notes we had recorded for her. We were stuck with the appointment in a few weeks. I said that we'd find a way to get there and left it at that.
Two weeks later...
We came back to NJ to drop off $5K for the hotel deposit and make the rounds. We moved the Florist appointment to the same day to keep things moving. After these two, it was off to the Boro for the license and then a 6 hour drive back home to go directly to work. We arrived at the scheduled time and my wife mulled around at the candy and cookies and such. I remained on the phone calling every place you can imagine, about things for the wedding, and lots of things for work.... 11 minutes pass... We had been glared at by a blond woman in the back several times when we gave a little wave, whenever she'd look out front to us. Eventually, she shut the little shutters that separate the rooms. By now, my patience was wearing thin, so I called the bakery. The owner picked up, and I said that I had been up front for ten minutes, that we were here for an appointment, and that we'd like to speak to her so we can move this along. She said "I don't know how long you THINK you've been waiting, but don't you lie to me. I'll be out in a minute." Very classy. I'm aware of how long it was since my last call was made as I entered the shop and I have mastered the ability to read a clock. A few minutes later, a younger woman (not the owner) came out, greeted us, and lead us into the side room to talk cakes. We handed her our notes from the previous visit, which she copied down and offered us cake & icing samples. We said we were OK, but she grabbed them anyways saying, "Just to make sure you got just what you wanted." We thanked her for the meeting (15 minutes), I apologized if I had seemed curt, and we headed out to our florist meeting.
The caked ended up being Very good, and while we only had a small bite of it since we were dancing, I can suggest them for their products. My wife got the cake she wanted, nicely included in the wedding package, and I got to cut it in half with a sword (cake server was too small, sword was the next logical step.) If you're in the area, and are looking for a nice selection, I do recommend them. After all, most of us care about how the item tastes and looks, which was very good, which earns them the 3 stars.
Now, that being said, I will not now, or ever again, be a customer of theirs. The attitude & extreme frustration from the owner (yes, it was the owner, dispite the second woman being very kind) was enough to make me consider PAYING for a different bakery to take care of the cake, rather then even speak to her again. I'd only suggest that she at least pretend that she's in the hospitality field. And I'm glad for her that she's stood next to famous chefs for her pictre to be taken. I've met two of the same (from her picture shelf), and their jerks too. read more
