A moment of true nostalgia. As a Boston native, one thing I will forever love is the food, especially the Chinese Food! Chinatown Express is one of my favorite on the go restaurants. I've been coming here since 2002 and though I moved out of Boston in 2005, I make sure to come get an order everytime I'm in town. Good food, good portions, and most of all, GREAT Combination plates. My go combo is the D11. Chicken Fingers, Boneless Spareribs, Beef Teriyaki, and Pork Fried Rice. This combination is a perfect balance of pork, beef, and chicken. The ribs are meaty and have a perfect sweet to salt balance. The beef teriyaki is well done and pairs well with the pork fried rice. The highlight for me is the moist, meaty chicken fingers. The meat is seasoned as well as the batter is too. The pork fried rice brings everything together as I take a scoop of rice with every bite of meat. LoL!!!! Now, if you know what's good for you, make sure to get the Duck Sauce. One thing about the Chinese food in Boston is the Duck Sauce. It's sweet and provides an added flavor profile to everything on the plate. Also, regardless of what you order, the duck sauce will always make it taste even better. LoL!!! If you're in the area you've gotta stop in and get some food from Chinatown Express. The menu has a variety of options. The lunch and dinner specials are awesome. The service is good. And the food is fresh. 20 years later and they still haven't lost the quality goodness that I enjoy! read more

This used to be one of my go-to spots for takeout. I never had a bad meal from, here. They employ tasty sauces and some painfully spicy mustard. I like that. That being said everything is good, not great. Chinatown Express is not my favorite but more like a comfortable old pair shoes I can just slip into when needed. Grabbed some food from here last night. A Pupu platter for 3, shrimp fried rice, pork fried rice, scallion pancakes, & chicken fingers. I called at 905 and didn't know they closed at 930. They made me aware of this but of course still took my order. Everything was fresh and up to par minus the rice, which I was looking forward too. Definitely won't order that late again but there was plenty of food in the Pupu platter that's for sure. Also A LOT of fortune cookies and condiments read more

I remembered this restaurant from my childhood. It was my family's go to place for outstanding American Chinese food. I haven't been in awhile so I decided to give it try a couple of days ago. I ordered chicken fingers and chicken wings. Both were really huge and cooked to perfection. The downside, absolutely NO flavor---no salt, nothing! I've been eating here for 25 years or more. I ordered food tonight and it was disgusting. The chicken was under cooked, the spare ribs and beef teriyaki didn't have the glaze on it and the rice didn't taste the same. I called back to find out if they purposely changed the recipes and they said they only changed the recipe for the rice. The guy with the glasses that always makes the rice, isn't there anymore. I hate to say this, but I'm looking for a new Chinese food restaurant. I don't know if they sold the business or the family is starting to retire, either way they should have asked for the recipes first. I should have known something was wrong when I saw cooked rice sitting out. They NEVER did that before. Lastly they gave me two medium size duck sauces and I ordered a pupu platter for two, rice and a small chicken wing, how is that enough sauce. I remember when this was a family place when they first open. The food was really good it was mom and pop place who were nice people. The food has gone downhill. The chicken wings are dry cut up, the lobster sauce salty most of the sauce stuff is salty and the rice bland hardly any pork in the rice, boneless spareribs you can't taste, the food is bland, and I keep giving the restaurant a chance because it's in the neighborhood. I can't even get the real hot mustard, it's now in a package (awful). Everyone I know from the neighborhood is unhappy with the food now all we had good memories of the food. read more

Great quick spot Chinese Restaurant! I been ordering and eating food here for years! They have some of the best sides including there chicken wings and bbq boneless spareribs! The bbq boneless spareribs are well seasoned a perfect blend of herbs, spices and a hint of sweetness! There chicken wings are slightly crispy, seasoned well with a great blend! Haven't been here in a while but was in the mood for Chinese. Didn't see exactly what I wanted on the dinner menu so I asked for chicken wings pork fried rice and crab Rangoon. Was told $10.45 ok I guess it's reasonable with crab rangoon. But I noticed at least 3 people after me came in and their price was also $10.45 we all ordered a variety of things. This annoyed me a bit but ok. I hear a guy ask how many wings come with the dinner he was told 2. I think maybe 3 is more reasonable. I finally get home and the wings were so small there was maybe 1/2 a teaspoon of crab mixture in my crab rangoons. Never again ...I'll drive a little further Quincy or Milton for my Chinese in the future. read more

I've been eating at this spot since I was a kid (~20 years). They must have changed the chef and recipes because the food is terrible now. The spareribs were undercooked and the rice was literally tasteless. I gave it two 2 more tries on the off chance it was just a bad night but ended up with the same terrible food. Fan-freaking-tastic. So deliciously wonderful. If you're looking for quality Chinese food that really satisfies those tough cravings, this is your stuff. Their chicken fried rice is excellent, their crab rangoons crunchy and sweet, and their duck sauce is the best I have ever tasted, hands down. They are always friendly and awesome, and the few times we've had a language barrier issue, they've been very patient and kind to us. It's savory and sweet and spicy and tangy, tasty goodness. They obviously know what they're doing here. Best yet, their portions are ginormous. We always order things in our hurried, hungry excitement and then end up with entirely too much food, eating it for the next two days. It's fantastic and awesome (and reheats well - I swear). Things have absolutely changed in this place. I was at a loss for words when I saw what they call fried rice now. It looked like chopped up rice with brown food coloring and diced carrots sprinkled in sparingly. No flavor on the wings or teriyaki. The chicken fingers and egg foo yung was just ok. If the food at this place was actually good they'd be able to get away with their poor customer service. I ordered chow mein, and they gave me something else instead: a mystery dish that was not edible. I called to let them know about the mix up and they said to come in the next day and they'd refund me. I showed up with the credit card receipt and the man asked for the food itself. I didn't bring it with me. It was already in the trash. He said no food, no refund and then two men started yelling at me in Chinese. All I was asking for was a $9 refund for the food they mixed up. This place also has hidden charges for soy sauce packets, fortune cookies, duck sauce, mustard, and Italian bread they throw in the bag whether you ask for it or not. Yes, Italian bread at a Chinese place. Very bizarre. They charge you for all of the condiments and don't provide a detailed receipt of the charges. Delicious. Cheap. Fast. Everything you could possibly want in Chinese Take-Out. AWESOME Crab Rangoons! I definitely recommend the house fried rice (it's the best I've found). I wouldn't order the lo-mein unless you're REALLY craving it- it's not the most flavorful, but certainly not bad. I agree with Amanda, there can be a language barrier, but they definitely work through it and are the kind of place that truly believes that the customer is always right. I used to like the vegetable Lo Mein at this place but recently the quality has gone down. The most recent take out I had there had beef and broccoli that was basically somewhere between a soup and a stew and not a stir fry. The general chicken was on the other end of the spectrum - no sauce at all and chicken that had the consistency of a rubber. And the Lo Mein and crab rangoons were meh. After being a customer of this establishment for 30+ years, I went with my parents, and now with my family. I am sad to say that me and my family will no longer be patrons of this restaurant. The establishment is the prime example of when a small business forgets and even abuses their patrons by charging them for every little thing no matter how much money you have spent on an order. Today after placing a 60$+ order for a family event my husband wanted to make sure that the kids had plenty of duck sauce asked for ONE additional sauce (there was only one in the bag) the man handling the order proceeded to tell him it would be an additional fee and the one sauce in the bag as adequate enough, apparently there is some duck sauce to order ration that we was not aware of! Every time we go to this establishment we spend no less then $50 for our family of four. They have done this before when they used to give bread with certain orders for example if you like to eat bread with lobster sauce they will charge you for the bread. People pushed back now they no longer give or carry the crusty bread. Its not about the money it is the principal that when you are a business and the community and patrons take care of you, that you in turn take care of it! if you ever wonder why people want to take their money to establishments outside of their community look at this place and watch your receipt if you happen to like commandments because they are going to charge you extra no matter how long you have been a patron or how much money your order. read more

I accidently stumbled upon reviews of this place while just randomly going through restaurant reviews for the Dorchester area. The hubby and I frequented Chau Chow on Morrissey Blvd., but after reading the reviews of Chinatown Express, we were tempted to try this place and see if it was better. Apparently, the two of us can eat, or our eyes are bigger than our stomachs...maybe a little of both. We ordered crab rangoons, which were very nice with a hint of sweetness, and peking raviolis, also very tasty, better tasting than many I've had. The chicken wings? Very robust compared to other chicken wings that I've tried at other Chinese take out restaurants and boy were these good! Add to that some house fried rice, which was very nice with seemingly everything in it (little shrimp, pork, etc...) and Four Happiness, with beef, shrimp, chicken and roast pork, so certainly no shortage of meat. Not my favorite dish (I found the shrimp and pork's taste not to my liking) but I imagine one could do worse. Pretty good value, and on top of that, they gave us about eight slices of some baguette like soft bread which we made French Toast with this morning for breakfast. Nice bonus! And they sure didn't skimp on the fortune cookies (we got about 8 - we must've ordered so much they thought we were having guests over or something). They also didn't skimp on the dipping sauces. Finally, their prices are pretty reasonable. Chinese take out can be pretty salty, but I have to admit, I was still a bit taken aback by the sodium overload the first time I tried this place and was hesitant to try it again. The hubby however, convinced me to go back (okay, and ordering those stellar robust chicken wings sweetened the deal, too). The other reviews here swore by it. Going back again, I expected to have to swig a tall glass of water immediately after finishing to balance out my equilibrium. Perhaps it's because we didn't order as much the second time or I was just expecting it to be worse due to my initial experience with them, but it wasn't as bad I remember it. We tried something different also - their curry beef. Ok...it was tasty. I will definitely give them that - everything I have had here has been very tasty. I'm coming around, and this most likely is going to turn out to be our go-to place for Chinese take-out. So I'll bump it up to four stars from my previous three. Now...the last time I went here to pick the food up, another customer and I were chatting a bit, and he mentioned the egg rolls were the best he had ever had. Considering everything I've had here so far has been really good, and I don't like egg rolls...if I order and egg roll, try it, and really like it, then these guys are going to be bumped up to five stars. So update...1/24/14. I finally tried one of their eggrolls. They're big and battered and beautiful. Dipped them in duck sauce, was completely magical and when I ate the whole thing I was immediately sorry I didn't order more of them. So, as I promised, they are now up to five stars. Really good American-Chinese food, at very reasonable prices. All day specials can't be beat, the noodles, crab rangoons, and spring rolls are all quite tasty. Copious amounts of food helps too. They lose one star as their General Gao's isn't quite as spicy as we prefer, but nice and crisp with broccoli that's not overcooked. A great find. read more

Really amazing food, not terrific customer service. I appreciated that the fried rice wasn't overly greasy, the portions were huge and my shrimp was deveined. This place is the best "round the way" Chinese food. It can be a tad bit greasy but it's always fresh and super flavorful you can tell its made to order. They would get four stars if they had decent customer service. The lady at the front is rude and I walked out because she wouldn't budge on a substitution.
