They have a nice selection of bread, some Chinese classics, some with SE Asian flavors, but also newer Japanese/Korean influenced varieties as well. You grab a tray and help yourself to what you want, and they ring you up and seal the bags. Overall a clean set up. There's a fridge for drinks too. Wanting a sweet after dinner, I picked up a sesame ball and a cha siu filled bolo bau for breakfast the next day. After dinner, the bakery is crowded because ice cream and Taiyaki with ice cream is also served. However, the line moves fast. When choosing items, it's like most Chinese bakeries, you grab a tray and place your items on it. Take the items to the cashier and pay. Even after dinner the bakery was well stocked with items being re-stocked when I was there. Alas, this bakery is take-away with no seating inside. As for prices, they appear to be consistent with other bakeries in the area. For example, another bakery selling sesame balls was 50 pence less. Motivated by rave reviews, I visited Chinatown Bakery to sample their taiyaki. To my surprise, there was no line when I arrived in the evening, a portentous sign that I should have heeded. Taiyaki (£ 2.50 for 4 pieces = $3.12 ) - The pricing is extremely reasonable. The taiyaki were being made automatically by a machine, which added some batter and then custard. Since they were freshly made, they were extremely hot, but weren't anywhere as good as the ones I have had in Japan nor the ones I have had in Southern California at Somi Somi. Although the price was reasonable, I would pass on this treat and get something else from one of the other shops. Like all other places I visited in London they take contactless payment. read more

It opened at 10:30, and when we got there at 10:45, it was already pretty crowded in the area you get the pastries. Everything looked so good, but we got three items and it was the perfect breakfast for us. The BBQ pork buns had a depth of richness that were unlike anything we'd had before. Savory and filling, they were the perfect treat to start the morning. Followed by the Pandan bun, it was a great way to end the morning snack fest. The Pandan bun was sweet, light, fluffy, and balanced. Normally, flavored buns have a sugary, grainy texture in the filling. These buns did not suffer that same fate, as they were absolutely delicious! We saved the moon cake until we settled down and hands down was the best mooncake we've had! If you make a stop for dessert anywhere in London, I can't recommend this place enough. Sure, you have the opportunity to splurge like you've never splurged before, go big, go fancy, go extreme. In London, it's totally possible and probably around the corner. But, the simplicity of this lovely treat is what makes it such a win. I had seen this all over YouTube, particularly for the taiyaki, so I had to give it a try. It was busy when I went (a Saturday evening), so I just went in to grab the taiyaki and go. The price was definitely reasonable, so if you want to try it, you should. It wasn't bad, just a bit overhyped in my opinion. It was essentially a fish-shaped waffle filled with custard. They are cute as well as you get 4 and they are small. There is a lot of other stuff that looks good that they sell that I have seen at similar bakeries, but I didn't have anywhere to store it, so I'll have to try those another time. Stopped by around 11am on a Saturday to get some snacks for Lunar New Year. Long line outside as usual but not as bad before noon; after that the line gets super long. Note there are two lines: one to buy pastries inside and the other to get freshly made taiyaki outside. I stood in bakery line and got a few things, but only tried a couple: - Pandan bread. Didn't like how these weren't wrapped at all, so the bread touched my tray which seemed a bit unhygienic. However it was definitely fresh and warm from the oven, with a light sweetness that was quite nice. Would order again. 4/5 - Passionfruit cake. Small slices available in various flavors. The passion fruit actually had a nice strong flavor (unlike the nearby Donutalier which had barely any passionfruit taste in their donut). The cake was a typical Asian white cake, still solid. 4/5 Also got some Pandan buns but didn't try it. Will come back to sample more of their menu, but either go there early on weekends, or go on weekday daytimes. This place was packed the two times we walked by it: once in the morning and once in the afternoon. We decided to chance it and try the line for the small taiyaki. You get 4 for 2.50, and can pay with card. The line went pretty fast. Treat is served right off the pan so beware, the custard is extra hot (little lava goodness). I then decided to chance it in the bakery line. I was amazed at how quickly and how organized the cashier's were. This pandan cake was one of the most delectable things that I have ever put in my mouth. It is so fluffy and moist, as you can see in the picture. It is a coconut flavor and not too sweet!! However the bakery is always super crowded and they sell out of many things because it's so popular. So def swing by early if you can. Luckily checkout is efficient and quick and everyone basically loops around so you just follow the line. I wouldn't recommend the small takoyaki though, they don't have enough filling. A pretty small shop. Pretty standard and a bit pricier than if I were to buy Chinese bread in Chicago. Wasn't 4-star impressed and it seems like there were a few other places that sold Chinese bread too that may have been equally as good. Still decent as any Chinese bakery always hits the spot. On a side note, the paper on the bottom of the bread adhered to the bread, so it was almost impossible to eat the bread without eating paper too. You walk in, grab a pair of tongs and a tray. You place your selections on the tray. The storekeeper then tally up your total and packages the baked goods in bags or boxes. If you're really hungry, the sidewalk just outside seem less bustling than the rest of Chinatown, London - seems OK to sneak a bite or two or three. This new bakery has taken over the site of one of the few Chinese bookshops in Chinatown, which also proved a good place to buy things like Chinese calligraphy pens. Guess the demand for egg tarts must outweigh the demand for calligraphy brushes these days I came across Chinatown Bakery in all its shiny new glory on Saturday, complete with an impressive array of good luck baskets lined up outside the shop. Fulfilling my Yelp duty, I popped in for a look Most of the goods are available for customers to select themselves - pick up a pair of tongs and tray by the door and help yourself. There are some cakes and egg tarts behind the counter which you have to get one of the servers to get for you As I was due to eat a large buffet dinner in the evening, I restricted myself to having one egg tart, purely in the interest of Yelp quality control - it had lovely flaky pastry with a ight custardy filling.
