Having only just discovered Fabrique on Portobello Road I was happy for an excuse to try the Hoxton mothership of this small chain of Swedish bakeries. While the former branch is minimalist in design and portfolio, the latter has even less frills and feels more like a factory. Which sort of makes sense as it is located in some railway arches in a side street which would have been used as a garage or timber yard till fairly recently. Not sure if they always have metal shelves in the middle of the space, but the indoors cafe area is not at all inviting with just four small tables lined up against one wall - with the sales counter opposite. Luckily today was a surprisingly warm March day and we were happy to grab one of the outdoor tables. I guess this is where all that lovely bread is baked, and those buns. I tried the cinnammon variety today and was surprised at how juice a pastry can be - just perfect. So was the coffee.

Walnut bread on apricot bread. Both delicious

I really like a good boulangerie meal, regardless of the time of day(which sometimes makes quite an unorthodox impression). And so I visited Fabrique on a cloudy Saturday afternoon guided as usual by My Fellow Yelpers to check if they are really this good. They are. Tragically missing the famous cardamon bun (classically the guy in front of me snatched the last two) I was delighted to find out that they also add cardamon to their cinnamon and vanilla buns. Especially with the latter it makes a huge difference in counterbalancing the obvious sweetness for a more complex and refined taste. Apart from the buns I was very impressed by the apricot-hazelnut bread which was absolutely stuffed with these goodies! Absolutely fine to have on its own. 5 all the way

Not a massive fan of their coffee but their buns are awesome. Whether you go with cinnamon, cardamom or vanilla you're in for a treat. They're big and beautiful and filling. Even their sandwiches, made with their own amazing bread, are worth a try. Plus this location, tucked under a railway arch behind the Geffrye Museum, is as cute as it gets.

Very nice bakery! Had the cinnamon roll but it was a tad too sweet for me. Should have had the cardamom roll instead.

After having a Cardamom roll I can now never taste a cinnamon roll the same again knowing that there is a Cardamom roll somewhere out there in London.

It is strictly takeaway as there is really no place to sit and eat. The small shop is very straightforward with just a deli-like counter from which to see the goods and order. We were there on a very busy Saturday morning. We queued up in a line of people that extended out the door. They were pretty good about keeping the line moving, however, and we placed our order within 6 or 7 minutes of joining the queue. My wife had a Peanut Butter-Filled Plain Bagel, which she liked quite a lot. I had Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese on an Everything Bagel. It was very good. The service was very efficient and reasonably pleasant and the prices were quite fair. We will go back if we ever have the chance to do so in the future.

Ordered : Salt beef bagel- bagel warm, generous amounts of salt beef, mustard, and sliced pickles. The bagel was over slathered with a horseradish mustard, so much, that it overpowered the taste of the beef. Smoked salmon bagel without cream cheese- underwhelming. Bagel was cold and hard. I did not eat the top half of the bagel. Minimal amount of smoked salmon. The girl behind the counter looked like she could care less to be there and wasn't super friendly or helpful. All in all, happy to have tried it, not sure I'd come back again for more ...
