I'll admit it. I have a bit of a sweet tooth. And I know that Americans can go a little overboard with how saccharine some of our sweets are and I know that I shouldn't use the icing-topped cinnamon roll at IKEA as a baseline (are they even sold at IKEAs outside of the U.S.?)... But the cinnamon buns at Fabrique are utterly delectable, whether you're more attuned to American or Swedish cinnamon buns. With a subtle sweetness to them and a light cinnamon coating (and, as some of the Yelp reviews here suggest, a dash of cardamom), the cinnamon bun was even better than the ones I've had in Sweden. I found the cinnamon buns very reasonably priced at £2.50 each. (That means you can treat yourself to a well-deserved cup of coffee or take some more to take home!) Though the hipster Shoreditch reclaimed garage interior might have suggested otherwise, the employees were extremely friendly and not aloof at all. (And that being said, the design aesthetic is admittedly pretty cool and very appropriate for a bakery on an unsuspecting street down from Hoxton Station.) Having only just discovered Fabrique on Portobello Road I was happy for an excuse to try the Hoxton mothership of this small chain of Swedish bakeries. While the former branch is minimalist in design and portfolio, the latter has even less frills and feels more like a factory. Which sort of makes sense as it is located in some railway arches in a side street which would have been used as a garage or timber yard till fairly recently. Not sure if they always have metal shelves in the middle of the space, but the indoors cafe area is not at all inviting with just four small tables lined up against one wall - with the sales counter opposite. Luckily today was a surprisingly warm March day and we were happy to grab one of the outdoor tables. I guess this is where all that lovely bread is baked, and those buns. I tried the cinnammon variety today and was surprised at how juice a pastry can be - just perfect. So was the coffee. read more

I really like a good boulangerie meal, regardless of the time of day(which sometimes makes quite an unorthodox impression). And so I visited Fabrique on a cloudy Saturday afternoon guided as usual by My Fellow Yelpers to check if they are really this good. They are. Tragically missing the famous cardamon bun (classically the guy in front of me snatched the last two) I was delighted to find out that they also add cardamon to their cinnamon and vanilla buns. Especially with the latter it makes a huge difference in counterbalancing the obvious sweetness for a more complex and refined taste. If you've read my reviews you know that I have a deep, passionate love for carb-y things. And coffee. And Fabrique addresses both of these loves. In - *wait for it* - a Scandi-influenced environment under the arches of the railway. I mean, have you been looking at my Pinterest boards? This is basically: ALL MY INTERESTS IN ONE. Fabrique is open 7 days a week (different weekend hours, though) and I've never been there when it was terribly busy. It's a bakery (as in: you see people working there, and placing things on racks and *making all the things*) more than it is a cafe; there are 3 or 4 small tables inside and, on warmer days, some metal chairs and tables outside as well. That said, with the garden of the Geffrye just around the corner, I view Fabrique as more of a "takeaway" than a "hunker down and read/work/do things" kinda bakery. Oh, you're interested in the actual baked goods, you say? I was just keeping you in suspense. Here we dough! I mean, erm...here we *go*: Fabrique does bread, it does sweet pastries, and it does a small selection of prepared sandwiches (e.g., smoked salmon, some cheese and fig; simple, but special). Given its Swedish heritage a must-have are the kardamomma bulle (did I get that right?); a sweet dough twisted around with the distinct flavouring of cardamom. Although the top has some sugar/glaze, they are surprisingly not overly sweet. I adore these, and recommend everyone go for 'em, even though they are a slightly steep 2.50/each. Other skews on the classic are cinnamon buns and vanilla buns; try if ye must, but I really do strongly encourage the cardamom option. Another option with a Scandi-twist: the semmelbuns. And the most most perfect bread for toasting called, appropriately: "Mr. Toast". Fabrique has a really interesting pricing structure for bread; it's not just per loaf. There are 3 prices, and the price you opt for decides how large your hunk of the massive piece of bread you get. I always go for the 2.70GBP-sized chunk of Mr. Toast; perfect for a toast-heavy breakfast for two without risk of any leftovers getting stale on the counter for days (this never happens with Fabrique bread). Not a massive fan of their coffee but their buns are awesome. Whether you go with cinnamon, cardamom or vanilla you're in for a treat. They're big and beautiful and filling. Fabrique is a little Swedish bakery next to Hoxton station. The shop is tucked away under the railway arches. The interior looks kind of industrial, but in a good way. The counter is full of delicious food and Fabrique also offers great coffee from Swedish roastery Johan & Nyström. I read about Fabrique's cinnamon buns before I went there, and I have to agree with what I read. They are good. They are very good, indeed. Fabrique is a great place to enjoy some baked goods and a cup of coffee. When I was there, I was lucky enough to get a glimpse of sunshine through the window, which made my stay even more enjoyable. Besides food and drinks, the fellow guests also seemed really nice. Despite Fabrique is somewhat off the beaten track at least for a West Londoner it is nonetheless a beautiful place that I will visit again. Soon. read more

Cardamom bun! Sprinkled in cardamom with a light glaze, this is something you can't just have one of. The bun strikes a balance between crunchiness and chewiness and goes well with a nice cup of coffee. Preferred it over the cinnamon bun and the vanilla pastry. Quite possibly the best cinnamon roll I've ever had. I'm not sure what else to say, really. I'd like to try some of everything now, especially the cardamom roll, but I just walked in, ordered 2 cinnamon rolls, went home, and my wife and I were both blown away by how good they were. Disclaimer: these aren't American-style gooey, squishy, uber-sweet cinnamon rolls. I've just discovered this is round the corner from me and I am now very worried about my waistline and my wallet. This is a great little Swedish bakery just along from Hoxton overground. The bakery is under the railway arches which adds to the great personality of the place. Inside there is a couple of tables and you can see the the baker's at work, there are also a couple of tables outside for when the sun is shining! I haven't sampled the bread yet but it looks incredible. They have a variety of rye breads and also offer sandwiches. I had a cinnamon bun which was delicious! My friend felt a little hard done by as her's was noticeably smaller than mine but that does show this stuff isn't mass produced! This place isn't cheap (£4.50 for a black coffee and pastry) but I guess you do have to pay for quality. read more

What a fantastic little gem of a bakery next to Hoxton Station. I try to go there every Saturday to buy a wonderful Rye for the week ahead. Is it an everyday bakery? No, I wouldn't categorise it in that manner but if you want to treat your sweet tooth to something a little bit special then do check out the delicious Swedish pastries - the cinnamon buns are a particular favourite of mine. Considering the price-point (slightly on the expensive side) and that bread is a big part of the everyday family food sources I can't see this place as being anything other than a specialist bakery but if you want to see true care and craftsmanship for your dough then it's worth checking out. So, like the location and the space. Terrace so-so as we had to keep our cakes and drinks on our lap, the ground was way too uneven and the the food just kept moving towards the edge of the table. However, this doesn't really have anything to do with the actual quality of it or Fabrique. Cakes were good, had a vanilla bun and it tasted like the ones at home back in Sweden. Had a elderflower soft drink and it was nice as well. Paid just over £6 which is reasonable. Not really a place for lunch, more like a place for 'fika' - coffee and cake. Pastries better than some of the other Scandinavian places around London. Also atmosphere. Tends to get very quiet as there is no music and baristas seem slightly awkward at times but it's a sweet place. read more

I was really chuffed to find Fabrique tucked away on Geffrye St, Hoxton, right behind my office. However, this soon changed when I experienced the shocking service and the ridiculous price of a cup of coffee. The service is not what you'd call smiley or even happy. There is a girl behind the counter who never acknowledges customers, never says hello and rarely smiles. It is almost as if she has been forced to work there. I was the only person in the shop this morning and she stared through me as I entered the shop. This has happened on the 8 or 9 times I've visited, so it isn't an isolated occurrence. As for the prices, since when is it acceptable to charge £2.75 for a latte? I guess it becomes acceptable when you're pretty much the only bakery in the area and you have your customers over a barrel because the choice is so limited. The average cost of a latte in London is £2.50, with the range of pricing being somewhere between £2.10 and £2.50. Pastries are similarly over-priced, but for artisanal bakery, I'm not too surprised at this. If I want a pastry, I know that prices are really going to vary. There are other venues, definitely not as chi-chi, in the vicinity, where I'd gladly go for a cup of coffee and not feel as if I'm being fleeced by a personality-free robot.
