    branding produced by a 6 year old .. no...really :)
    Anthony H.

Ever feel the need to eat natural wine fed Sourdough produced in an old Aesop bottle? Ever while away the hours drinking fresh ground whilst debating/googling the merits of the Maldives vs Ibiza? Jolene will do this to you just because she can.. Another slightly out of town gem in Stoke Newington. Part bakery, part café, BIG, light, airy and a little bit ott with its pricing, certainly not a place for auld folk and cost prohibits the yoofs. It is a Marmite kind of thing. Love it, Hate it. No middle ground. From the bakery on site (using the wheat grains from chemical-free crops grown in a sustainable way) - apricot and butter pudding, Naroques bread, sausage rolls, Madeleines and cinnamon buns. Off the pseudo aga menu you can scoff up a plate of Eggs, Jamon, and potatoes or Curried Spinach, Soft Egg, Crumbs. The veggie options are diverse. They like their lentils and spelt here. Obviously. Most plates tend to be oomphed with things like goats curd, and [some] vegetables. Lots of comfort food too, Cheese Toasties, Tomato/Pumpkin Soup, Caesar salad, Poultry salads, Parmesan snow on everything .... Sit at one of the two huge sharing tables or use the counter seating overlooking the kitchen and bakery or the front terrace and just glug from the small selection of natural whites, reds and sparkling wines. Jolene's concept is promo' of sustainable farming methods to preserve the soil for future generations and, as a reinforcement of the futuregens, the logo/brand ID was the output from a 6 year old. Why would we not do our bit for the young'uns!? Should you feel your artsy perspective coming on post Jolene then, Evolutionary Arts Hackney (EartH), Rio Indy Cinema or Vortex Jazz club are all within easy walking. #googlestokenewartscene

    Review Highlights - Jolene

This is a very tiny but extremely charming bakery in East London that I visited nearly every day of my week in London.

I will not return to this shop as they have been overcharging. Not the first time this happened…read more Although I do like some of their products I have noticed on my last bill i was overcharged again. My advise look at the bill twice before you leave the store. This time i have paid 10 pounds more. I was charged for 3 melons instead of one and something that was 99 pence i was charged 2.99. My fault for not returning immediately but I no longer believe this is an error as this is not the first time. I was served at till 3 and amount was 71.76 when it should have been around 60.

Have you ever been stalking someone? - Well, I turned in to a food-stalker yesterday...but let me…read moretell you the whole story: I was walking peeking into the window of a bakery on Green Lanes when I overheard the conversation of a couple next to me; she was saying: "This bakery isn't so good...I know a place up the street that my Mom swears by!" This conversationary bit made my rudimentary detective instincts come alive immediately: I folded up the collar of me trench coat, put on my sun-glasses and picked up the trail. The couple, she in pink trainers and he in checkered yoga-pants - blazed their way up North on Haringay Lanes...I stayed behind at a non-intrusive distance and made sure to always look lackadaisically into a shop-window when they happend to turn around... After a few minutes they seemed to have reached their destination, as they disappeared into a store. I waited a few polite seconds until I entered the store as well...and let me tell you, I thought I'd entered Nirwana...at least a Baklava-and-other-Turkish-Pastry-Nirwana! AMAZING!!! I walked around the store for quite a while and I was simply just in awe...my mind began racing: What should I buy? What should I eat now and what should I take home? But, would it even make it home? In the end, I settled on a nice selection of different kinds of baklava-type pastries, which the kind lady behind the counter helped me pick out. Then I discovered a door that would lead into the grocery store next door: a Turkish/Greek supermarket that not only sells amazingly fresh produce, but also features an impressive selection of olives and other mediterranean goods. In fact, in the fridge I discovered "Cyprus Style Pastirma", which was looking so deliciously that I simply had to buy it...even though I had no idea what it would taste like nor how I would have to cook it. I guess I'll figure it out before the expiration date on April 20th... So...in the end I think I have to re-evaluate my opinion on the activity of stalking...at least when it comes to food-stalking. After all, it can make the difference between an ok and a an amazing day out!
