a random friday lunch date with my parents... always a great time. China Yi just opened in March. It is a random spot in the shopping plaza, i think it took over yum yum donuts. but it works. it was pretty busy during our visit, friday around noon, which is great to see. plenty of 2-4 person tables inside. we ordered two of their lunch specials. which they serve til 3pm daily! each lunch special comes with fried rice, chow mein or white rice or 1/2 & 1/2. each lunch special comes with corn egg drop soup. (not avail for to go orders) the lunch special consists of : combo A $9.75 (one item) or combo B for $12.95 (two item, can pick from section A and one from section B) $2 extra for any seafood dish. my mom order half fried rice and half chow mein with: FISH FILLET IN BLACK BEAN SAUCE ORANGE CHICKEN i ordered half fried rice and half chow mein with: TERIYAKI CHICKEN CHICKEN W/ STRING BEANS ($1 extra) they have a pretty extensive menu for a smaller kitchen. but the kitchen staff were getting everyones order out quick. the food was good, did not feel heavy at all. the orange chicken or teriyaki chicken were not drenched in sauce, which was great. we all enjoyed our food. my parents liked it so much, they went back the next day. parking: i hate this parking lot LOL. it really should not be two way traffic. but plenty of parking , just watch where you park lol.

I am always on the lookout for good Chinese lunch specials and was quite pleased to discover China Yi. China Yi is a fairly new spot in Torrance. It's only been open for a month but from the looks of all the folks dining when I came on a Friday, it is quickly becoming popular. They serve lunch specials till 3pm daily and there are two types of combos to chose from. They have a combo one for $9.75 and a combo two for $12.95. Combo one includes one item while combo two comes with two items. Any seafood dish is $2 extra. All combos are served with fried or steam rice, chow mein and egg drop soup. I came with my mom and we chose to each got a combo two. She got the Chicken Wing with Salt Pepper and the Moo Goo Chicken. I got the BBQ Pork and the Beef Pepper Steak. We both really liked the Chicken Wing with Salt Pepper. The chicken wings were served hot and fresh and were so crispy, with a slight hint of spice. My second favorite dish was the Beef Pepper Steak. This one was so flavorful. I loved the tender slices of beef, crisp bell peppers and onions all coated in a savory, pepper forward sauce. I also enjoyed the Moo Goo Chicken. Light and simple, this dish had tender chicken, mushroom and lots of fresh vegetables. My least favorite was the BBQ Pork. It was a bit on the dry side and came out slightly cold, making it less enjoyable than the other dishes. Overall, I really enjoyed lunch at China Yi! The flavors were on point and the prices are great. I will definitely be coming back.

    Tofu salt and pepper

I'm very happy to see another Chinese restaurant n the South Bay. China Yi just recently opened. It's nothing fancy but the food is solid. We ordered pick up on a night when no one wanted to cook. Ordered the fish fillet with black bean and the tofu salt and pepper. Both these dishes come with rice. We also ordered the Taiwan style chow fun. I can see why they state they cook with less salt and less oil. You can really taste the difference in the food. It does taste healthier. The fish fillet and the Taiwan style chow fun were delicious. The tofu was good but I guess I was expecting the tofu to be crispier. The price point is reasonable but I don't think the servings would satisfy a hungry teenage boy. Would definitely have to order more dishes All and all I would recommend China Yi and I do look forward to checking out the rest of the menu and also dining in. When I was googling I found their website and looks like there may be a loyalty program? It's something to look into

Broccoli Beef, look at those veggies, yessss!

I'm not a Chinese food expert, but I know I like flavorful, spicy (when necessary), fresh and chunky Chinese food. I like big veggies, the kind that are big enough that you immediately recognize that it's an onion, broccoli, carrot, etc. China Yi doesn't disguise the veggies, hallelujah! I also like spicy when a menu indicates the dish is spicy, sometimes with a chili emoji. I expect to enjoy some heat, something that makes me feel like there's a party going on in my mouth. Rarely do I find where spicy means s.p.i.c.y. The Hot & Sour soup was neither spicy (as indicated by the chili emoji) nor sour, but it was hot, stove hot, so there's that. The Fish Fillet in Spicy Gravy hit the spicy mark - he loved this chef's special and commented that the hot & sour soup would benefit from whatever spice is used in this dish. Friendly? Absolutely. Swift service? Bingo. Plenty of parking, easy in and out. Decor is refined with bright but pleasant colors which is a far cry from many Chinese restaurants whose color seems to often times default to: pink. Love the ambiance here. I like China Yi and I enjoyed the broccoli beef, house chow mein, spicy fish fillet, and the egg rolls. Loads of food, and I'm grateful I was conservative on ordering just a handful of our favs. I'm looking forward to trying other dishes such as Combo Kung Pao, General Chicken, Mongolian Beef. I wish I had a code that I could use to signal to the cook that I'm thrilled with real spiciness, this girl loves feisty, spicy deliciousness. Worth a visit...or three, for sure.

    Beef noodle soup

New spot on 190th st. Very affordable prices considering the times, hence why it was so busy. Run by a very friendly and jovial owner and bustling staff. The owner definitely made the place feel more like a community and family restaurant. Seats are nice and comfy, well cushioned as they're practically sofas. Ample portions of food for the price paid, especially a lunch special evoking 2010's prices. Flavor is decent, slightly catered more to Americans while still retaining some authentic Chinese profiles. Beef noodle soup could've used more spices and a chili oil condiment on the table but otherwise the portions of beef gave it its value. Beef with broccoli was a little more on the sweet side but the pepper beef was spot on. May not be the best Chinese restaurant but it's definitely the best bang for the buck in the South Bay.

String Beans with Black Bean Sauce
    Lawrence H.

Got the Chicken Chow Mein, String Beans with Black Bean Sauce and an order of Shui Mai. The noodles were cooked well. The chicken was tender. The string beans were crispy. The Shui Mai was fair. The flavor was there but not on the same level as you would get in Monterey Park. The nice owner came out to the dining area to check on me and other diners to see if we had any questions. CY is located in the same center as CVS so no issues on parking. If I were to get the Chow Mein again, I would let them know to omit the sugar.

A delightful new destination for Chinese Food.

I would consider this mid-level Chinese and judging it on that criteria results in a 4.5 (rounded up to 5) star review. The place is clean, nicely appointed for a strip-mall, and inviting. We were seated promptly despite the restaurant being quite busy. We ordered some wonton soup, (surprisingly good) some chow mein noodles, (my wife enjoyed them) beef w/broccoli and moo shoo chicken. All of the entrees came with white rice. The food was fresh, plentiful and quite tasty! The service was no-frills but prompt and friendly. China Yi is a welcome addition to the area, especially given a dearth of solid Chinese food offerings. We certainly can see returning here next time we're in the mood for it...

Supposed to be beef chow fun? As seen in this photo no beef! Pork & shrimp!
    千代美 S.

Poof and poor! Ordered beef chow fun 干炒牛河, came with shrimp and pork chow fun?!Where's the beef? We don't consume pork meat. So that whole order went right in the trash bin. Too inconvenient to drive back to confront the order. Sigh... sadly Just by looking at the noodles, we lost our appetite! Services were also poor. No hello, no smiles just what you want? mission felt!

Chicken with hot garlic sauce lunch special. A little sweet and mildly spicy. Recommended
    R T.

New restaurant right on the border of Redondo Beach and Torrance. It felt very authentic, and the food was excellent for the price--especially the lunch specials, which come with chow mein and fried rice. We were looking for a budget-friendly spot without sacrificing quality, and this definitely delivered. 5 stars.

    Nancy B.

Hubby and I thought we'd give the new restaurant a try and it did not disappoint. When you walk in, the smells are delicious. The decor, seating and tables are really comfortable and modern. The menu has so many choices to offer. We were greeted immediately and even the owner came by checking on everything. The meals we chose were really flavorful and so much food. We'll definitely be back!

Nice, clean place. Friendly people. Some good food and some okay food. Might totally be just me based on my own tastes and experiences. The good: 1) wonton in chili oil: nice dumpling, not too thick dough, could be much spicier 2) crab rangoon: most places just do the cream cheese. At least you get crab with a K. 3) shui mai: not the normal ones or the ones in the photo even. These are more of a bulb with a long neck. Doesn't taste like the typical one either. I believe I was told it was by a chef who worked at a 2 michelin star place and formerly Ding tai fung. We also got 2 lunch specials. Orange chicken was different. Maybe too sweet. Came with fried rice and chow mein noodles. The chow men was decent. The shrimp in lobster sauce was bland. I would probably try the pork, either the salt/pepper or the garlic if I were to go back. I'd also stick to the appetizers and dim sum.

The prices are reasonable if they are lunch special prices. The dinner prices can be a bit pricier. The tangerine chicken and the sesame chicken both had great flavors, but could be a bit crunchier, though. The duck was decent in flavor, but the portion was a bit small. The other dishes that we ordered were all very good too. Overall - I would return to get more Chinese food here because the prices are reasonable and not too bad. The service was good, and the staff were wonderful in trying to help us order the food if we had questions.

Cons: The Hong Kong Style Crispy noodles and Fish with Black Bean Sauce were a 2 out of 5: The flavors weren't really there, mostly a sugary "gravy" taste. Not bad tasting, perhaps similar taste profile to Panda Express but with less distinct flavors. Overall may be crowd pleaser dishes but if you're used to good Chinese food, you may be disappointed. Service was friendly but slow during lunch special hours on weekends; servers seemed overwhelmed by the crowds.
