    Canaan fish special
    Laura D.

This is a small restaurant with a very helpful and attentive staff. There were not very many patrons at the time of our visit, but the timing of their service was perfect. We ordered the Canaan fish special, orange chicken, shrimp and chicken dumplings, honey walnut shrimp, and assorted chow mein. The Canaan fish special was my favorite of the entrees. It was perfectly savory with the most subtle crunch and very flavorful. The chicken and shrimp dumplings and the orange chicken need a bit more pizzazz to the flavor, but they were cooked well. The honey walnut shrimp was also delicious but a bit more saucy than I'm used to, but I would definitely order it again. The assorted chow mein was my second favorite dish although I do wish the portion of the chow mein was a bit bigger because my family and I inhaled that pretty quickly. I do hope to be back to taste more options.

I've been driving past here for some time now and I finally got the chance to stop by. I ordered the passion fruit tea, pop corn chicken and egg rolls. The service was great from the get go and the interior felt welcoming. The teas were delicious and food came out fresh. The popcorn chicken was actually spicy and not just an advertisement, which I love. The portions of the food was actually great too. I will definitely be coming back to sit down and eat soon!

Canaan Cafe is probably the only Authemtic Taiwanese cuisine in the South Bay. Only a small portion of the menu has Taiwanese food, the other half is just regular Chinese food items like Brocoli beef and orange chicken, etc. When I crave for Stinky fried tofu, I get my cravings here without going to SGV or Cerritos. You could taste the stinky but fortunate for those around me, they don't stink that bad, lol! They have braised pork rice bowls but it's small portion of braised pork and a whole lot of rice, and no egg. Flavor is good but I like the ones at Tea Station better. Braised Beef noodle soup is good and the beef are meaty. Very small Cafe with a small parking lot but usually ok to find empty parking spot.

Really tasty Chinese food in Lomita, they have a few other locations that are also really good. My husband and I ordered the string beans, popcorn chicken, and salt pepper tofu. They all hit the right spot so would definitely comeback for the same dish again. The service was quick so that was a plus. The restaurant environment itself is pretty average for your Chinese restaurant. I do wish they have lunch special like the Cerritos location though.

The restaurant is very modern, love the ambiance. Seats are cleaned and everything is polished. But my concern is the atmosphere. At first, I had low mixed expectations. To me, vibes are important first greeting. When I am entering a place, I appreciate the presence of the staff because I love a welcoming environment. The place was empty and the vibes leave me curious on how well this place will be to visit. At first, it was calm and the energy of the place feels mysterious. But as I recieved my popcorn chicken--I was amazed by the portion. It was way bigger than I expected and I even ended up getting take out to save the rest. This is definitely a place that took me by surprise. The popcorn chicken is so flavorful and tender. I was satisfied by every bite and enjoyed every second. Sometimes, the quietest places have the most to offer. And for Canaan, it was definitely the case. My sister ordered scallion pancakes and we loved the comfort of the taste. The thin pancakes felt so light and pleasant as a snack. So thank you, Canaan Cafe for a wonderful experiance. I am hoping that your restaurant recieves more customers soon. This place is a hidden gem.

Love their filet mignon stir fried dish!! Maybe pricey but totally worth it. I can't still stop thinking about the dish. Pork shrimp siumai was delicious too. A bit large. Everything is not so cheap but love their quality and variety of menu. Really wished they just give rice for free for entries like these... New customer who follows their instagram gets a free drink and who leaves their info gets a $5 gift card. They want you to add money to the card and they will give you even more credit but I don't live that close so didn't go that far. Parking is fine in the small strip mall but it may get busy depending on how busy the other stores are too.

Hubby and I came for a birthday lunch as my favorite food ever is Taiwanese. I loooove beef noodle soup. I go to different places to try out their beef noodle soup. The meat here was good. Wish the serving size was bigger and broth a bit more stewed for flavor. Not all places have Taiwanese basil popcorn chicken. This was the best of what we ordered here. Very few places have stinky tofu. I love it when you can smell the fermentation a block away. Alas, this isn't the smell neighborhoods or some other patrons like. You just can't get stinky tofu like you can in Taiwan. So, here, the stinky level was low. If you put your face in it, you kind of get a whiff. Fried tofu is still something I thoroughly enjoy. We would come back with the kids.

We came here with a party of 9 on a Saturday lunch and the restaurant was easily able to accommodate us. Got to try a ton of things on the menu because of our group size. Shared parking lot is a bit small, but there was plenty of nearby street parking. The food: Recommended- Canaan Special Fish Fillet - battered and nicely fried, finished off with a sweet glaze Braised Egg Tofu w Minced Pork Hot Pot - I love egg tofu - it's an eggy silken tofu that comes in a tube. In this dish, they lightly coat with starch and deep fry. Then it braises in a soy sauce based liquid. This dish was so saucy, definitely get it with some rice. Eggplant with Basil - fantastic version of this eggplant dish, with large pieces of tender but not mushy eggplant String Bean with Ground Pork Ok dishes: Assorted fried rice Dan Dan Noodle - thought the flavor was good, a ton of ground peanut, a bit liquidy, which threw me off Pork & Vegetables Wonton Noodle Soup Shrimp & Pork Sui Mai Green Onion Pancake Fried Stinky Tofu - this one is interesting because it's hard to find on menus. It is slightly stinky and worth trying if you need to stretch that itch. Steamed Shanghai Dumpling - I don't think the XLB is their specialty. Positives were flavor was ok and it comes with thinly sliced ginger. The skin was a bit doughy and not much soup. The previous time we came, I recall ordering the French Style Beef Fillet Mignon and that was pretty good (also fits in their wheelhouse of what they do well). I think you can have a fantastic meal here if you stick with what the restaurant does well.

This is a small hole in the wall restaurant tucked in the corner of a strip mall. The wait staff was extremely friendly and accommodating as we had a large group and didn't make reservations. We ordered several dishes such as the Canaan special fish fillet, eggplant with basil, Green beans, scallion pancake, xiao long bao, sticky tofu, fried rice, and tofu with pork hot pot. With the unassuming atmosphere, I wasn't sure what to expect but the food was really good. The Canaan special fish fillet is a must order. It was tender without any fishy odor or flavor and battered just right. It was so tasty. I would be happy with that dish with a bowl of rice. I would definitely go back just for the fish alone!

serves up delicious dumplings, including Shanghai dumplings and wonton in chili sauce, and flavorful beef noodle soup with tender beef. They have attentive staff and good value for the price. What I got: Appetizer -vegetable egg roll -shrimp and pork sui mai Entrees: -special fish filet -stir fried string bean with garlic -French style beef fillet mignon -honey walnut shrimp Noodle and rice -vegetable chow mein -braised beef noodle soup Drink: Passionfruit green tea

Pork and Shrimp Shumai = good, meaty
    Laura H.

Spicy Wontons: decent but could be more savory. The chili oil that the wontons were served in had some type of spice that lingered on the palate without being tingly. Pork and Shrimp Shumai: good - they were meaty, and though I didn't quite taste or see shrimp, they did satisfy our craving for shumai. House Special Fish Filet: chunks of deep-fried fish lightly tossed in a slightly sweet and peppery sauce, these were crispy and tasty (our favorite of the three dishes we tried). Small corner shop with very limited parking, but we got lucky on a Saturday afternoon. Simple and casual interior with bar seats at the front and regular dining tables deeper inside. The waitresses were great - attentive, quick, and professional, especially during the lunch rush when it started to become hectic.

There was eight of us, and we ordered a lot of dishes to share. I'm gonna break them down, but I have to say that nothing we had was not top quality. I haven't had food like this in years. First was the Kung pow chicken. Wow, it was just a perfect blend of spice and the chicken was perfect. No gristle. And that is the theme of this entire meal. I hate gristle, this Kung pow was sublime. Sweet-and-sour pork. I basically given up on this dish because no one gets it right, and it's always an excuse to hide gristle and fat. Not in this case. It was super tasty and for the first time I can remember there wasn't 1 ounce of gristle in this meat. It was just crispy tasty wonderful. Hong Kong style chow mein with pork. Another dish I haven't had in years, and this place nailed it. Reminded me of my old China house restaurant in Alameda. I mean it was really good. The pork was awesome, the gravy was perfect.
