Updating after several more visits... since my last review 7 months ago, we've eaten at China Wok at least 5-6 times. Our favorites from the menu include: wonton and house special soup, egg rolls, dumplings, lo mein, chow mein, chicken & broccoli, hunan chicken, and a few more I'm sure I'm forgetting. Every time we eat from China Wok, we are always impressed! Protein is always high quality and vegetables are always fresh and crisp. We often request our dishes be made spicy, and they always come through. Flavors of all dishes are always balanced and really delicious. We are never disappointed! The woman that runs the front is nice and speaks very clearly. During my most recent visit, we had a nice long chat about our gardens. :) Note that they only accept cash, and close at 9. read more

The food number one! Place is terrible. I hate to say it the only thing that keeps that place going is the baseball people. Service is fine, inside is a little barren with no sit-down dining. No one really eats Chinese at the restaurant though anyways. It was clean, but I can't recommend. read more

Before getting into the food, a couple very important points for first timers. I should've actually read the YELP page which would've saved me from assumptions that nearly everyone makes about a restaurant. 1. THEY DON'T TAKE CREDIT CARDS: This is a big surprise as it isn't a roadside stand. They also didn't give me a receipt either, which was odd considering I had to come back in 20 minutes to get my food. And it isn't like the prices were super cheap. Cash business, no receipts...hmmm. 2. There is no dining room. This is a carry out only so don't go with a group. I ordered the General Tsao Chicken. It came with the sauce and broccoli. The broccoli was very fresh and substantial. The chicken was in huge balls of white meat. It was flavorful. The sauce was too syrupy for my liking, but not without flavor. The white rice that came with it was par. Be sure to get plates if you are in a hotel or you'll be eating it out of the container which can be messy. It wasn't great, it wasn't bad. If you have a Chinese food craving, this is a port in the storm. Otherwise, seek better fare elsewhere. read more

Excellent service and attention to detail. Great menu. Safe for those with gluten allergy (Celiac). My daughter and I have never had a problem. There is an up charge for gluten free preparation which is clearly stated when you order. The business is cash or check only. read more

Five stars for friendliness at this restaurant. The lady up front was super nice, apologetic for the long wait (because there were so many orders), and chatty wishing folks a great game. Coming from the Bay Area, but rating this knowing I'm in Cooperstown. The smell of the kitchen was actually really good, so I was hopeful. Overall, the food was good and definitely satisfied our craving. Can't go wrong with chow mein (though it's Lo mein here). The fried rice was a bit weird (only thing I would not recommend). Orange chicken was a winner for the kids. Everything else was fine. China Wok is located in a Cooperstown shopping plaza with a supermarket, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Subway, and some other smaller stores. It's probably the only Chinese fare choice in the area. It does pretty well because it's in between a Holiday Inn Express, a Country Inn and Suites and right next to a nice Best Western. Anyone who comes to this town undoubtedly is here for the Cooperstown Hall of Fame, so there is ample tourists, especially during baseball season! The food however would never survive in a more notable venue such as a true Chinatown, where you'd expect authenticity and mind blowing flavors. We ordered Szechuan Beef and Chicken, Curry Chicken and Mei Fan Noodles! All dishes were bland with hardly any flavor! The traditionally spicy Szechuan was not spicy at all! When we ordered, the lady said...it's spicy ok? We said absolutely! Spicier, the better! Nothing! Anyhow, we had low expectations and received the same. It was better than stuffing our vacation bodies with Mickey Dee's or Pizza. It was an alternative that we chose, just have to tell the truth about the cuisine is all! It's your run of the mill Chinese take out place where the menu is filled with stereo typical Chinese American make up dishes that do not even exist in China! But if that's what you like and are used to, you should feel right at home. But for this Asian foodie, it's a two star place for chow. read more

Therefore, this is going to be the last time after going to see the induction of the baseball hall of fame. Not impressed at all. We ordered over the phone and the lady who answered the phone was not pleasant to talk to. Once we got there to pick up the food, there was a pungent smell and the staff stared at us the entire time. I ordered a sesame chicken combo meal. I got maybe 8 pieces of sesame chicken and probably 2 heaping cups of sesame sauce. The chicken was tough and over cooked. My significant other got a beef and broccoli combo meal. He said that the meal had no taste whatsoever. The only reason I'm giving this 2 stars is because it was fast and cheap. This place is really rather good. It's standard American-style Chinese food at reasonable prices and the food is very tasty. Here from California for a week if baseball. Food was made fresh, tasted yummy and the wait was not long at all. They didn't have AC but at this point being hot and humid is the norm... if you're looking for a warm and friendly greeting that's probably not going to happen but who cares if the food is good. We had house lo mein, kung pow shrimp, house fried rice and beef and broccoli...some might be bothered also that you are served on styrofoam plates and only 3 tables to eat at. Good Chinese food from a strip mall in upstate New York? Yes, indeed. I get take out from China Wok a couple times a year when I'm visiting Cooperstown. Their vegetarian fare is comparable to average Chinese restaurants in Boston. The veggies are fresh and I have to say the white steamed rice is a cut above. They're accommodating of special requests (adding tofu to a broccoli dish, for example). The food is very reasonably priced. I'm not sure I'd want to dine in the small restaurant, but it seems clean and warm when I've been in. One thing to keep in mind is that they don't take credit or debit cards. Pricewise, they are much cheaper than I'm used to for the Boston area. read more

If you're in the Cooperstown area and are good on Americanized Chinese food, this is a great place to get a reasonably fast and very affordable meal. The menu is pretty inclusive. Food comes up pretty quickly. Give them 15 minutes heads up for take out and you're good to go. The prices are very reasonable. We feed a family of 4 for well under $30. The place is pretty small - no more than about a half dozen tables. People don't go there for the ambiance, although the servers are sweet and take good care of you. As others have pointed out: * Cash or cheques only (no credit cards, no debit cards) * the seasoning is very Americanized - if you're a devotee of authentic Chinese cuisine you may want to pass on this * seating is quite limited and the ambiance is sorta Chinese shabby chic When things get crazy in our household this is one of our go-to places to get a fast, affordable meal. We're there at least a couple times a month and my teenagers have yet to tire of it. It's not artisan cuisine, but it's way better than a McMeal. read more

My fave Chinese restaurant. I've been going here for over 25 years and the food is always fast, fresh, and hot. Never disappointed. They are generous with portions and don't try to skimp out on the meat by adding too much cabbage or onions like some places do. Nice and clean with super friendly staff. My family has been going here for years. Wonderful, friendly staff, they are always accommodating, as far as spice, low oil and little salt. Everything is great.
