I can't believe I hadn't visited here earlier. I visited here for the first time a few months ago and it was delicious! I love their chow mein and sesame chicken or orange chicken. So much flavor, insanely huge portions, and fast service. This is the type of local Chinese spot that you know is gonna be good when you walk in the door. It appears to be family operated. Hand-made signs telling you about meal deals and discounts, photos of their menu items on the wall. A few places to eat inside, but most people take their order to-go. The parking lot can be a bit tricky because of how small it is, but I've never had to wait more than a minute for parking. My friend and I came around 11am and both got 2 item combos. They really LOADED the plates up with food too! I got the sesame chicken and Mongolian chicken with half chow mein and half fried rice. My friend got the orange chicken and spicy chicken with half half as well! Everything was really good, but the orange chicken and sesame chicken was dry and tough instead of moist, tender, and crispy. A very solid Chinese fast food option and walking distance from CSULB. Being in that prime location, they could choose to gouge you, but they don't. The prices are very affordable and the portions are huge. What is unique about China Star is there are a decent amount of vegetarian and vegan alternatives on the line. There is an eggplant Tofu dish, an all veggies dish, and one of the pho options is vegan. And, oh yeah, they have Pho and it is great! This Chinese food restaurant is a popular spot for CSULB students and construction workers. It's close to CSULB, and it's never super crowded in here! I got the 1 Item Combo with Chow Mein, Fried Rice, and Orange Chicken. The portions are good for being under $10, and there was a sign that says for a limited time, combos get a free medium drink from 3-6pm. The Chow Mein is good, the Fried Rice is pretty good too, and the Orange Chicken isn't too crunchy or too soft, and it's flavorful! The employees are nice, I've never had a bad experience with them. The restaurant has plenty of seating both outside and inside. It's decently clean, it just looks like any typical Chinese food restaurant. I would come here again. My girlfriend and her friends frequent this place and this happened to be my first of infinite visits. It's by far the best fast food Chinese I have ever had. I heard good things about it and since moving to the area, I wanted to land a great place to bring home quality Chinese. It's a clean restaurant and great food. I went with the three combo plate (which for the price isn't bad at all) I got the amazing chow mein and fried rice with beef broccoli and orange chicken and their mushroom chicken. The orange chicken and the sesame chicken that my girlfriend got were both crispy and had enough flavor on them. The broccoli was tender and the mushroom chicken was glorious. Big pieces of mushrooms and zucchini with chunks of chicken. It came with a free drink for my combo so that was cool. I loved how the chow mein had more noodle than cabbage. That was a huge plus. Understand that they have hidden fees at this location. If you buy a combination plate and if you add any meat they add an extra dollar to 2 dollars on top of the combination price. I don't get it. They food was ok it was nothing great and for being down the street from the CSULB you would think they would have reasonable prices for their food. I would NOT recommend eating at this location. Cheap food on the go. It's decent for the price, and the portions are solid. The rice and noodles really fill you up and their eggplant w/ tofu was cooked well. Given the long line around dinner time, a lot of people appreciate the affordable food that doesn't skimp on taste. read more

Stopped in for the first time recently when I was craving soup. Bought a large container of their standard egg flower soup. It came piping hot with some good veggies taking the basic egg flower soup up a notch. I believe they also have options with chicken and a spicy version. Their pork fried rice was fantastic and came so packed into the container I got five meals out of it. Big chunks of pork were the star of that show. I needed a quick dinner before the nearby college basketball game. China Star Express came up well recommended. When I arrived in the small parking lot, Pizzamania was busy and CSE was empty. I almost opted not for Chinese fast food because of the lack of customers. Right when 6:00pm hit, the place had a line to the door. Like many family owned Chinese fast food restaurants, they give you a lot of tasty food. But the prices here are below the market average, probably to entice Beach students. Went here to try the food and ordered the 2 item combo and the lady re asked the same question 3 times. I ordered the orange chicken and the bbq pork and this is $12 with out tax. I go to the register and they say $15.50 and t say why is it higher price and they said we charge an additional $1.75 on top of the $12 for the pork. This is very disappointing since almost all Chinese restaurants don't charge an additional fee on top of of a fee. It's bad enough that eggs are $7 to $12 a dozen!!!! This is our go-to favorite spot. The aunties always hook it up and we're never disappointed choosing Chinese, again.. this is much cleaner than other spots that I find greasy. We still feel great after finishing our food and not sluggish full of regret like the other spots. Aunties are always friendly and smiling while they load up my box with sesame and orange chicken. Well the first time I ate here with a friend, the chicken pho was definitely not bad considering you are thinking it's only what I call a pick pick (food prepared and you point with your finger haha) place. So the second time (that's the roach incident btw) we ate here on 7-18-2023, at 11:30, And I am thinking that the food would be super hot and fresh looking but It was not as hot and lacked some flavor especially the beef. Now, I know if you paid about $10 for a combo and yes they give you tons of carbs, but beef is not tender at all. Obviously, if you're on a pinch or craving last minute American Chinese food then please be aware it is not epic. Service is not their specialty and they treat it like it's just a line of people and just serve as usual. No, greetings, just simply pick your food, pay, and no other thank you or have a great day- so forth and so on... The benches are ok, some table seating outside. For one it is way over priced, the bbq pork cost extra and it is dry as hell. I felt like i had to take a dump before i even finished eating. The line was long for a reason. But the speed with which they dealt with us felt like that conveyor belt in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and I felt very serviced. The food itself looked mouth-watering (despite the menu pictures nearing a decade old and looking oddly yellowed and unappetizing) and I wanted to try every item but my wallet and my cholesterol doth protest. The prices are wonderfully reasonable (especially in a college area), the portions healthy and enough for a meal or two, and the milk tea? Oh god their house milk tea was so sweet and creamy I wanted to cry. My mouth watered in spite of being full of tea and pudding and I was actually sad when I sucked my last drop of the ambrosial liquids and made that unfortunate raspberry sound of a straw on its dying breath. I stopped by for lunch to get a three item combo with a few patrons eating. The place is clean and a couple tables on the outside if you want to eat ther. I ordered chow mein noodles with sesame chicken, bbq pork and the eggplant/tofu. The sesame chicken has sweet and a slight tartness to it which I liked. The flavor was very good but the meat was too dry. The bbq pork was flavorful but again too dry, like jerky which I didn't enjoy. I love Chinese takeout spots like these. You go in and you see what you want and order! You cant go wrong by starting your order with some rice and chow mein. I was hungry so I went with three entrees. The orange chicken was my favorite out of the three but I also got some mushroom chicken and the BBQ pork. There was a deal for a free drink when I walked in, so I took advantage of that. I was in and out in less than five minutes. The guy behind the counter was ready to take my order and wrapped up by food well for the trip home. Pretty good price for the amount of food I got. Quality was good. I tried China Star Express for the first time last night. The food was really good and the people working there were very nice and friendly, with kind smiles. There were a few people in line in front of me but it was very fast. I want to go back to try the boba and more food. I am deaf/hard of hearing and I can feel awkward ordering or shopping sometimes but I felt very comfortable with the workers here. They are patient and have sweet energy. I will be back! As a person who's had Chinese fast food from a plethora of different spots, I'd say this place was pretty mid. Portions were decent, taste was decent, and overall, if you have no where else to it's not the worst option. The service and ambiance was that of a fast food restaurant, quiet, not too dirty, but what it is. As for my meal, I prefer the Orange Chicken from Panda Express (and maybe it's because I got the last scoop of Orange Chicken but I'd say it didn't have much flavor either, I also ordered the barbecue pork which was better than the chicken). I did enjoy the chow mein and fried rice, was definitely for authentic than Panda Express but nothing special. At the end of the day, it's fast food so I can't complain too much but unless you need a decently priced meal (approx. 15$ (with tax) for a 2 entree combo plate) and somewhere by CSULB, I'd go somewhere else. read more

Tonight I went here at about 7 pm. Their chow mien was delicious and had a nice kick of spiciness in it. The restaurant was warm and welcoming, clean and had plenty of seating. A young man, Jason, helped me and was generous with serving size and even added a lots of ice in my free water, per my request. The owner was so nice and said the store has been there since 1998.
