Best time to go is for the lunch buffet. Menu and dinner prices are a bit high. In the past I've ordered egg rolls to go with my dinner plate and it costed $30. The portions to go are not very big and good is mediocre. I learned my leason now and never order off the menu again. read more

China Palace is in a shopping center with a few other restaurants and we felt it was our best option. The rating was a bit low which was scary and I couldn't pull up the reviews (phone issue with a program I use) but in we went anyway. The place was empty but it was a bit early for lunch and a national holiday so I didn't let that deter me. We were taken to a comfy booth and given menus. They did have others come in to eat as we were eating. They had a good sized menu with many interesting selections which would be perfect for dinner or for leftovers. They, also, have a lunch menu with interesting selections that we don't normally get. Most had the hot pepper sign next to it but they said they could make it mild for my husband. He ordered the shrimp in hot garlic sauce and I had the ginger beef. The entrees came with soup-egg drop (hubs) or hot and sour (me), egg roll and fried rice. The soup came and, both, were amazing! Hubs loved the egg drop which had plenty of flavor and the hot and sour was, both, hot and sour (most are too mild for me) with enough goodies in it. Then the appetizers came with the egg roll and a freshly made fried wonton. Most appetizer egg rolls turn to mush, as if we're frozen, when bitten but these had fresh veggies. And the wonton was light and airy and heavenly. They gave small dishes with delicious hot mustard and a tasty dipping sauce that was pale in color as opposed to the scary neon red that some places serve. I was very impressed. Then, the appetizers came. My husband liked the shrimp in hot garlic sauce. The shrimps were firm and had a good flavor and the sauce was perfect for him. The ginger beef had little ginger flavor and was ok. It had little heat as well. I wouldn't get that again but would try their noodle dishes. I would try the China Palace if we were in the area again. Service was good and it was very clean. It holds real promise. read more

Way overpriced for what you get. Food is just ok, not great especially for the price you pay. The lady who took our order was quite rude and condescending. Even though there aren't very many places to eat here in Los Alamos, especially on a weekend evening, we will not be returning. read more

Apparently the restaurant has completely changed some of their recipes, and I mean completely as in all different vegetables and sauce, without updating their menu pictures online. For dinner my friend and I decided to try something new in Los Alamos, so we went to China Palace. When we first walked in we were the only ones there, which was kind of awkward. We decided to stay anyways though, and fortunately 2 other tables came in later to make the atmosphere a little more pleasant. The first thing I always order at a new Chinese restaurant is house special fried rice, since I think if the restaurant can't even get fried rice right, there's a low chance that they'll get more complex dishes right. When my fried rice arrives, which it did so quickly I might add, it looked a little on the greasy side. Not one to judge by a book's cover, I took a bite. It was a little greasy, but not overwhelming. The fried rice was pretty standard fare, but for $9 it was a little overpriced for the quality. The waitress was nice and quick with drink refills, but given that the restaurant was empty it would be surprising if she wasn't. My overall impression of China Palace was very, very average. Not horrible by any means, but I probably will go to more appetizing restaraunts in Los Alamos in the future. read more

I live in Truchas, but have a client in Jemez Springs, so I pass through Los Alamos once a week. Today I decided to bring home Chinese after work. The lo mein was soggy and the sauce wasn't good. The duck was dry with rubbery skin and the sesame chicken was mediocre. The saving grace was the egg rolls. This place is really not worth the price at all. read more

This is definitely one of the underrated restaurants in town. It's never usually very busy so at least it's like a little peaceful haven. I absolutely love the food here. Full of flavor and I haven't regretted anything I bought. Only issue is the staff are sometimes on their phones and don't talk to the customers much. I'm stuck in los alamos for a month on an experiment, so I've been to this place ~5 times now. Service is very good. I drink sodas quickly and my glass is never empty, even during the lunch rush. The servers don't all speak the best english, but they try their best and always have a smile. Besides, do you want people to be TOO americanized at a cultural food place? The food options here are somewhat hit and miss. I have had a good number of things off the menu (~30), and I would say that 70% rate a "good" or better (some are excellent). Some of the more authentic chinese dishes are bland for my tastes. I strongly recommend going to the lunch buffet your first time. It is VERY reasonably priced (8 something I think?) and allows you to try out a bunch of different dishes, so if you come for dinner next time you'll know what you like. This place is on my regular lunch-rotation, and easily contends for the best deal on lunch in Los Alamos (I've eaten almost everywhere in town now). read more

Well, I have tried again to get a tasty lunch in Los Alamos, and yet again failed. What is it about this town! Ordered two appetizers - potstickers and fried wontons. No description on the menu, but I assume I know what both of those things are... WRONG. Potstickers were what I assumed, the fried wontons were a different story. Everywhere else in the county these are crab/cream cheese deep fried things, here they are deep fried wonton wrappers, with some kind of weird red stuff to dip them in. Also, they really raised their prices - 8 fried wontons 3.50 and 6 postickers were 8.50. More about the potstickers - they would be better off buying the Ling Ling frozen ones at Sams club as they are better. I would not even cut them in half with my plastic lunch utensils. They were about half dough. I SHOULD have gotten the subgum wonton soup - although they only have it for two, no single portions. No wonder I pretty much only eat at home. read more

The food at this restaurant is very bad! I ordered kung pao chicken which was served with almost no peanuts, absolutely no flavor, and the chicken was covered in a pasty corn starch mush! My wife ordered shrimp with snow peas and the shrimp was also covered in the pasty corn starch mush. China Palace surprised us. We were in town for the first time and didn't realize that most places closed at 8pm on a Saturday night. (REALLY?!) The only other options we came across were McD's and Sonic. We were pretty skeptical, because we generally only eat at one Chinese place in our hometown, let alone stumbling upon a place on vacation. The appetizers and entrees we ordered were similar to what we order at home and they really blew us away. The service was prompt, the staff polite (they didn't rush us even though it was close to closing time), and the restaurant clean. The atmosphere really left something to be desired...it looked like the place had been pieced together from old Chinese restaurants, but whatever. We were just happy to have a place that wasn't serving chain burgers. The prices were quite steep for the small town atmosphere, but we were starving. I'd eat here again if we ever visited again (which is pretty unlikely). read more

New Mexico is pretty weak in the Chinese food department, you can find much better than this place in Albuquerque; but to get real Chinese food you have to travel to California or Houston.. so given that is a bit far to go for dinner, this might be your best option.. This place has a small buffet at lunch, don't eat that unless you are really focused on saving money. It is quantity rather than quality and some of that stuff in the buffet is kind of gross. Order from the menu, much better. Well, if this restaurant was in Oaklands' Chinatown or in the Alhambra area of Los Angeles County, they would never have any customers.. Ordered takeout recently. The mu shu Pork was very good as were the vegetarian egg rolls. However the orange flavored chicken was very different than what we are used to. It had very little flavor and was served with noodles and few vegetables. Overall the food was just OK and not as good as we have had in the past. read more

I think their food is tasty however I wish they had a bigger selection. Their dessert table really needs to be upgraded. Some buffet restaurants also have ice cream machines. My brother needed a haircut so he asked me to drive him up to Los Alamos. We live in the valley but come up to LA often. My incentive to drive was lunch and I could pick where, that's was a mistake. I picked China Palace . My family has come to China Palace for over 20 years, and it's been great! Expensive yes, but excellent quality food. Well, as we sat there, having what use to be an amazing buffet, we were sadly mistaken. It was horrible, the Rangoon's wonton covering was close to 1/4 thick! Not the filling the shell. The sauces where watery, the food flavorless but very salty. It's as someone never made Chinese food had been recruited to work as cook that day. During this terrible meal, we overheard to other customers complaining too, and saying its under new management? So that might explain why it's now so terrible. Not going back! read more

I've just started a new job in Los Alamos and this is my first lunch. I'm sorry to say that I doubt I'll return to this restaurant. The food on the buffet had great color and looked wonderful when plated. That's where the joy ended. The chicken in the sweet and sour chicken, as well as the General Tso's Chicken was overcooked and tough. The Kung Pao Chicken was flat and tasteless. The steamed rice had uncooked kernels.
