My water was brought to the table immediately, and the soup showed up just after that. Hot and sour soup was good, delicious even. It had a nice mix of standard hot and sour ingredients, tofu, woods ear fungus, bamboo shoots, egg flower, etc... and the flavor was good. Not spicy at all either. My General Tso's chicken arrived quickly also... and I noted that it was actually prepared with some chilis fried in the oil as it should be. Chilis were on top of the chicken as decoration. The chicken was crispy, and delicious... all white meat. The sauce was very good too... tasted as it should. This dish should always have a little bit of heat from peppers, since it is meant to be a little spicy. It had just enough spice to be noticeable, although not spicy for my palate (I love spicy food). Some people might find it a bit spicy though. Large portion too... YUM! The crab puff were good, just cream cheese in a wonton wrapper, not sure how much actual crab there was, lol. The BBQ pork fried rice was excellent, with a fair amount of Char Sui (Chinese BBQ Pork) in it, with a nice smoky flavor. Based on this one dish... I am surprised at the negative reviews. If the reviews are based on delivery orders, that may be due to the person delivering more than the actual dish, which I suspect. Prices are very reasonable too... She recommended specific items on the menu, while telling us about them and the highlights she was clearly proud of. I may be old, but I actually really like recommendations from a restaurant. Sell me something I didn't know I wanted or needed. Which she did. I tried the chicken and mushroom dumplings, which were delightful. The braised beef noodle soup was incredible. The depth of flavor in the broth alone was impressive, and the beef was so tender. That bowl of soup felt like a hug from grandma when you're sick. It had that distinct "made with love" feel to it. We ordered several other items on the menu and loved everything. We're going back to try the soup dumplings later too. Which for me, the sign of a great restaurant is wanting to go back and try more items on the menu. Would I return? Oh my yes! I will absolutely be back. Repeatedly. This restaurant looks really unassuming and boring from the outside just because it's in a newer strip mall. But it's totally worth it. The spicy dry-fried green beans definitely delivered on heat. The spice is more of a quick Sichuan-style numbing tingle than a lingering burn but the stir-fried red peppers mean you should still eat carefully. The xiao long bao were good with flavorful soup and filling and wrappers that were not overly thick (though I personally prefer an even thinner skin) . They are best enjoyed immediately after reaching the table while the soup inside is still hot enough to vent before taking a bite. That is why I would recommend dining in rather than ordering delivery. XLB really shine when they are fresh and piping hot. I also enjoyed the crispy skirt on the pan-fried bao. Prices felt reasonable and Steam and Soul is worth adding to a local bao/dumpling tour. With more spots opening around Eugene and Springfield, it is a fun excuse to try them all and decide which style you like best.
