The food was mediocre--especially for a Miami Spice menu--and nowhere near the upscale experience we expected. After spending almost $400 for my husband and I, I would have expected more. The portions were insultingly tiny, with the exception of the chicken salad. The salmon tacos contained what tasted like salmon "paste," and each taco shell was barely two inches long. They were so ridiculously small that even our waiter chuckled. The "half Maine lobster" was about the size of a jumbo shrimp, with no claw. The main course came with no sides so for $65 jumbo shrimp that was it. If you actually want a meal expect to pay extra for "fried" rice that was super bland and churrasco 10 oz extra at $12. So my steak meal was $87 and for that I could have had a real upscale experience at Daniel's in the Gables with upscale service and food. The experience started poorly when the four of us were seated at an awkward, cramped table with no legroom. We were positioned facing outward instead of toward one another, making normal conversation nearly impossible. It was a very strange setup for a party of four. Also, it was very warm in the restaurant and I would have asked to adjust but at the look at the servers face and everyone else I was afraid to say anything that something would happen to my food. I had an absolutely unacceptable billing experience from this restaurant that presents itself as luxurious. I dined at Hakkasan Miami Beach a few months ago with three friends. Our $805.72 bill was divided into four equal portions of $201.43. I authorized my $201.43 share. Hakkasan then processed my credit card for $201.43 TWICE. What followed was far worse than the original billing mistake. Rather than simply acknowledge that something had gone wrong and return my $201.43, Hakkasan fought my credit-card dispute and submitted doctored documentation to support keeping both charges. I spent months disputing this with Citibank, ultimately escalating the matter to Citi's Executive Response Unit and filing a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. And here's what I find extraordinary: Hakkasan's own reconstructed check shows four separate $201.43 payments totaling exactly $805.72. It identifies payments from two of my friends. It identifies one $201.43 payment from me. And then it shows my card a second time for another $201.43, without identifying a fourth cardholder. There were four diners. Hakkasan's records identify three of us. My card appears twice. Yet Hakkasan maintained that both charges were valid, and after nearly four months of fighting this, Citi ultimately sided with the restaurant. So I am now out an additional $201.43 because of a second charge their server (who appeared to be drugs that night) maintains I authorized. A billing mistake can happen anywhere. What defines a business is what it does after the mistake is brought to its attention. For a restaurant of Hakkasan's reputation and price point, I find this appalling. I would have expected meticulous accounting, serious customer service, and an immediate effort to determine why one guest's card appeared twice on a four-way split. Instead, I spent months fighting to recover $201.43 while the restaurant defended the second charge. I have dined at high-end restaurants around the world, and I cannot remember another experience that left me feeling this profoundly distrustful of a restaurant's handling of my credit card. Check your receipts when you go to Hakkasan. They cannot be trusted. Check your credit-card statement afterward. And keep all documentation. They doctor things afterward to fit their version of the story. I will not return to Hakkasan under any circumstances. If I could rate them as a -1, I would.
