My dear friend Marilu knows that between my seafood allergies and in general just being a picky eater that Chinese restaurants are an adventure for me. She's been mentioning Canton Village for a while when I bring up Asian food and thus I took the leap Sunday for my lunch with Mima. Marilu mentioned they were only takeout, so I called the order ahead..and ran on Miami time to pick it up. The food was really well packaged so that when Mima and I sat to eat, the food didn't need reheating. Of course I stuck to my usual dishes. The chicken fried rice (we ordered the quart) had lots of actual chicken and not overloaded with broccoli as a certain National chain. The rice wasn't clumpy, but well graded (I don't like it sticky.) Sprouts and the other ingredients tasted fresh as well. My General Tso chicken was well seasoned, lightly sweet and with a mild amount of heat. It also didn't taste overly breaded; I could actually taste meat. The cashier was friendly, and helpful in holding my order even though I arrived late to pick it up. They're takeout only after Covid, though I was told they had an inside dining room room prior. For #ThankYouThursday here on Yelp, one business immediately comes to mind: Canton Village Restaurant. That and honestly they're long overdue for an update from me. Where can I possibly start with this business? In my thirty years of life, this has become a family staple. I grew up eating their food every Saturday night whenever my parents felt lazy and wanted to wind down as we watched Sábado Gigante together. Not to mention that even prior to my parents' marriage, they went on dates there. Talk about history! Nostalgia factor aside, this is probably the biggest bang for your buck in Hialeah. Or at least on this side of Hialeah, the east side. Their family meals are huge, their lunch combinations are a steal, and even if you order one dish alone, you're guaranteed to get a bargain. I can't tell you how many times I've ordered a quart of special fried rice and it's lasted me days. I also can't tell you many times I've shared this rice with loved ones and it's been a hit. In fact, I had a coworker (now friend) years ago who was a notoriously picky eater and she always asked me when I would bring more of this rice for her. But honestly, it isn't just about this dish. I've eaten such a variety of things from this local. I've had the fried wontons, the BBQ spare ribs, the egg rolls, at least two to three of the soups, the rice (of course!), the chicken lo mein, the Singapore mei fun, the pepper steak, and even some of their Cuban dishes back in the day. Yes, back in the day, as around a year or two ago, the original owners retired and sold the restaurant to extended family. With the sale came so many changes. What once was a mainly take-out restaurant modernized. They purchased new furniture, began accepting American Express and Discover at last, and even got on Uber Eats. They added new dishes to their menu, such as general Tso's chicken and sesame chicken, while changing or eliminating others. The egg rolls, while still satisfying, used to be larger and thicker, and previously Cuban dishes aside fried plantains were made. They've revamped quite a bit. It now looks as if they're revamping again. Amidst the global pandemic, they've installed a ventanita (or "little window" for non-Spanish speakers). A ventanita, while fairly common in the county, is usually seen at Cuban bakeries and coffee shops, never at a Chinese restaurant. Still, it seems to be serving its purpose as I passed by yesterday and it was by seeing this that I realized they were finally open once again. Given the pandemic and given this being a Chinese restaurant, it's no surprise that they were closed for nearly two months. What is surprising, though, is that they have reopened and have decided to keep on going, working their regular hours. At the moment, they have one cook and one host. The host is the one person there that surprisingly doesn't speak Chinese, but she speaks Spanish and English. Everyone else is fully trilingual, an impressive feat in itself. That said, on this go around, my roommate and I ordered quite a bit of food. Egg rolls, sweet and sour chicken, chicken lo mein, and special fried rice were our selections. Today, the day after, aside from the egg rolls, we still have food and I imagine we will have some more after dinner. Truly generous portions and I'm beyond grateful. For this, for the memories, for the great food, thank you. What more can I possibly say? Canton Village Restaurant, you're a diamond in the rough around these parts, and I hope that others, besides me, go and give you business. ESPECIALLY NOW. Bigger and greater things are coming... I'm not crazy about Chinese take-out restaurants, but I ended up here at Canton Village because my friend had a craving for this place specifically. She only has about one million check-ins here. Apparently, this Canton Village has been serving the neighborhood for ages and they're very well known in these parts. I ordered the Singapore Noodles and the serving size was massive. I was able to make about 2 or 3 meals out of this one dish. But, more importantly, the noodles actually tasted delish, soft in texture, and of higher quality than the Singapore Noodles I've tried at similar Chinese restaurants. I actually wanted to eat the whole thing... and I eventually did. I also tried a bite of the fried rice and an egg roll and they were both pretty good. No complaints there. I can honestly say that this Chinese food was better than expected. Would I return? If and when I'm in the area.. absolutely. And I would look forward to trying more from the menu here. read more

After the old owners retired the place has NOT been the same. So sad I have tried giving this place several opportunities but after my lunch o decided I will put the X on this place. I ordered a combination platter with ribs, egg drop soup and egg roll. The egg roll was not good tastes awful. The rice was undercooked and my ribs pretty burnt. Thankful they were open late on Christmas Eve, as we needed a late meal for unforeseen circumstances, which is why I'll give it 2 stars. However definitely a case of quantity over quality. A TON of food with was iterally the blandest Chinese I've ever tasted. General Tso's; Lo Mein; fried rice; and Sesame chicken ordered - every person eating drowned their meal in soy sauce and hot sauce to get any flavor. Always skeptical of trying new places, especially on the beach, but to my surprise the food at Canton was great! I ordered the General Taos combination platter, it came with a lot of chicken, special fried rice, as well as your choice of soup (I got the wonton), and an egg roll. Canton Village should be named Canton Concentration Camp because the food here could only be served there. They burned my ribs and rice. This place has more health and safety violations than Hialeah Hospital. Luckily the two are close to each other so when you eventually get sick from the food, you're at least close to somewhere that will try to take care of you (they can't). What a shame that after so many years of buying great food at this restaurant, the current quality of food has diminished soooo much. I ordered special fried rice and fried wontons and got three shrimp total when I opened it at home. It was mainly just rice. The fried wontons packaging even got smaller. This is not the first time this happened to me regarding the fried rice. They are cutting back on all the ingredients in general and we continue to pay the same, or even increased in price. They lost a customer. I bought from this place for the first time and everything was disastrous. The fried rice wasn't even warm and had SLICES of ham, the ribs only brought 5, they didn't have normal cheese rangoons nor spring rolls, the fried chicken was extremely greasy and cold, the krab rangoons were soft, and they barely provided fortune cookies. My family and I have enjoyed this local whole in the wall for over 30 years...unfortunately since jimmy and his wife retired and sold the place the food has been steadily declining in quality and taste with today being the worst of all. WATCH out people: I have been going to this restaurant since the 80's when it was owned by Chinese owners very nice, very good they even gave you the option of no MSG on your special fried rice. As their are many people who cannot eat it for health reasons. The restaurant was sold to new owners I order a few times from them it was great, but today we called to order special fried Rice with no MSG and they said all their rice has MSG in it already and if I want Rice with no MSW I need to order white Rice...WHAT !! We order to go and changed our mind when we got to the restaurant and when we got there they told us that restaurant policy was that we couldn't eat our to go in their tables. I come here sometimes with a friend. Lived down the street and have frequented in the past. It's not my favorite Chinese food, but it's still good. The "deals" do deserve recognition. They are famous for one of their specials, a large bucket of special friend rice, which will feed at least 7-10 people with a big appetite, a large soup (won ton or egg drop), honey chicken and soda for $29.00. I have not seen that anywhere else. The lunch specials are plentiful too. And in very good price range. I forgot to mention this is one of the most hard working families I have ever seen. I've noticed these people have always opened right after a hurricane (by right after i literally mean hours after) and are always open every holiday. The place has change a lot. It looks amazing, and the food is delicious. They upgraded everything. There is no more carpet, they have a brand new clean floor. They changed the walls and there is so much more space. They speak English, Spanish and Chinese. They also have Uber eats and Doordash amazing place for take out and dine in. I have been a customer of this place since 1999 and while I have not stop by in the last 3 years my recent visit 3 days ago reminded me of how good the food here really is. Yes I know, the decor simply sucks. It's like they are trap in the 70's. The carpet can't hold one more spill and it even looks dirty. However, the food is is phenomenal...just order the rice special. There is so much meet that it could literally be a meal by itself. I ordered the Orange chicken, OMG!! Simply outstanding, not your typical chicken with the sauce already mixed with the chicken, they actually take time to make fresh sauce. The service was phenomenal. hungry for Chinese? this is still a good value for your dollar. their lunch specials have a good price and you receive plenty of food... i usually have the honey chicken w/fried rice - the serving can easily be shared between 2 people. they will even serve the honey on the side and did i mention it also comes with a soup of chose. chicken wings are good and so are the egg rolls. place does have a min requirement to use a credit card of $10 - i have treated a group here for lunch at it was reasonable. service has been nice... does not really get too full so not much of a wait if in a hurry during lunch read more
