Manage your expectations... Coming here, I already knew what to expect. I came in, was greeted, started looking at the buffet setup to see if anything looks enticing. If not, I would just leave, but some stuff looked okay, and I was ready to eat some okay "Chinese" food. The food container was heavily packed, it easily felt like more than three pounds worth of food, which comes out to less than $5 a pound, which makes it really your bang for your buck! It was not heavily greasy too, which makes is on the high side of good "Chinese" food. I know that if I have this type of craving, I would be willing to drive out of my way to come back here again. One of the best places for authentic Chinese food! --- their food tasted like my grandma's & mother's cooking! Especially the chicken wings in soy sauce with chili flakes & the soy sauced pork ribs! I'm a picky eater and it's not easy to impress me.. But, this place is IMPRESSIVE!! Their beef and broccoli, orange chicken (especially when it just freshly came out from the kitchen) was SOOOO GOOOOD!! They don't cook in big batch of food, but in small batches! Which is great.. the food stays fresh and not sitting for long then probably get wasted if by closing time they weren't sold out. So.. sometimes, you might need to wait for the fresh portion to be cooked. The Lao Ban (boss) and the server/cashier; Ms. Wing (I think that's her name) were always so welcoming and friendly . They offered to cook me a fresh batch of the items I wanted. But... I like my food well done and overcooked so... I know,.. I'm a bit different LOL But I like their food!! I'm 35 now, and I've been going to China Grill Express since I was 14, and as far back as I can remember this place has been the definition of consistency. The quality has never slipped. The food is always fresh, always delicious, and they don't hold back--they load up your tray like they're trying to take care of you. The prices are fair, the staff is always friendly, and one thing I really appreciate is that they've stuck with their old-school stamp card. Buy five combos, get one free? In 2025? That's legendary. They take card, Apple Pay, Android Pay--whatever works for you. Their drink selection is on point too: bottled drinks, fountain drinks, and that Coke from the machine? Was looking for a quick, counter service Chinese spot to get my takeout on, and this place was solid. Got my usual combo of fried rice, chow mein, orange chicken and broccoli beef. And two eggrolls. Don't think anyone's standards should be high for getting Chinese fast food in this format. You're not paying a lot of money for cheap food that is hopefully (minimally) adequate, but the bang for your buck is usually the generous portions. I got a lot crammed in my to-go tray, and it tasted good. Just as good - if not, better - than the brand name counterpart in Panda Express, if that is the bar to reach/surpass. Food tasted fresh. Not sure if I just got lucky and they had just put my selections out, but I consider it a plus. Thankfully, they take cards, too. Which gives them a decent edge on the other cash-only, hole in the wall spots that serve up the same variety of food. As a cherry on top, they do punch-cards here as well. Think it's for every eight orders, you get a free, two-item combo. Not a bad way to keep me coming back. Eh not impressed with the flavor. Sorry China Grill I really do try to give the best reviews. The noddles and egg rolls were ok but your orange and bbq chicken did not have much flavor nor was it pleasant after the first few bites. Unfortunately it did not taste fresh, the orange chicken was overly crunchy. Maybe if the entrees were freshly prepared, it might've tasted better?? Utensils were present which was great because they tie the bag tight after it's packed. Couple sauces were in the bag but even after adding them, it didn't help the flavor or freshness issue. Not the best Chinese option. Based on first time ordering, not great. Two stars for the staff being friendly, the noddles being ok, and pricing for 3 plates & egg rolls. This place is affordable, clean and give good size portions as well. The orange chicken is super crunchy, if that's what you like, and the chow mein is good too. The other thing that I have had there is their egg rolls which I wasn't too fond of. The inside was too mushy, I guess it depends on your preference. Lastly, the broccoli beef is good, although sometimes the meat can be a bit chewy. It's not bad for the price. read more

What I enjoy most is the teriyaki chicken, the orange chicken, the barbecue pork and the chow mein. This is probably one of my favorite Asian go-to stops in Van Nuys. When I am in the area and I want my orange chicken or teriyaki fix, this place is the real deal. The owners are actually Cantonese parents and are there everyday, so you know the food will legitimately be like your mom and dad's home cooking (if you happen to be Canto). The owners are also super nice and always give extra full portions - you're getting A LOT of bang for your buck here. Finally, it's important to me that given the choice, to support smaller non-franchised family restaurants. This ain't your monied Panda Express with run of the mill cooks factory-producing a set recipe - this is a family place making solid home cooking like beef and broccoli or eggplant tofu. I have been coming here since 2004-5 from school catering to just simply getting my lunch/dinner. If you eat in, the TV is available for you to use, thats if everyone is watching it. They give great portions and even more than you can eat..lol. I ordered my typical two item Combo. I had half and half (Rice and Chow Mein) with Beef Broccoli and Spicy Chicken for $4.89. I also ordered a small side of Orange Chicken for $1.99. If you order a large extra side, its $3.99, but I did not order it. Total was $7.55. The food was actually made by an asian chef and served by an asian woman..lol. Usually, you get that stereotype of Mexicans cooking asian-authentic foods...Oh wait...there is one nearby..A-OK Chinese Food. I am not sure why Wong's Wok Chinese Food in North Hollywood is better. Its a little pricier and portions are small, but thats for another review later. Great place to stop by and not very crowded. I went there on Sunday for the first time after the beach. The kids and I were exhausted and very hungry. We ordered our meals and went to pay. We payment was declined! I didn't understand why if I knew for a fact I had money. I called my bank and they said it was blocked because they thought I had fraud. They apparently unblocked the card for me. After 20min I told the owner to charge my card again, he did and once again it was declined. I was frustrated. I had no other form of payment on me and all I wanted was to go home and eat. The AMAZING owner and cook told me not to worry about it and take the food. I swear I felt so horrible, I knew my card had money and was so frustrated that it wasn't going through. I told him I'd call again and he told No to take the food and come back the next day to pay him! I did! I called my bank on my way home and explained they said unfortunately they weren't able to remove the block. I needed to speak to someone in the fraud department and it was already closed. I called first thing the next morning and they fixed it. After work I went straight to the place to pay him back! The cook was so shocked and told me "wow, no one ever comes back to pay" That really broke my heart. During this time I'm sure business is slow and people small businesses are struggling. If someone allows you to take stuff knowing that financially it's hard please go back and pay. Thank you to the cook and the owner for being very generous. I will be back!!!! read more
