Great food. Also a Los Angeles Transplant, so we've got some great Chinese to compare to. A lot of harsh comments on here. Alright, time to elaborate! Reasoning why I give it 4/5 stars 1. The Food. It's great. Chinese restaurants differ based on the province that the owners or owners parents originate from. So it may not taste like it did wherever you're from. This place is owned by genuine Asian people, with the looks and accents. Great signs for authentic foods. 2. The price. They have amazing pricing. Today I ordered orange chicken combo and 10 pieces of crab Rangoon's. More than generous portion, paid $16.82 exact. It fed my girlfriend, my 3yo daughter, and myself. Sometimes I'll order a teriyaki chicken combo as well, and between the two combos and rangoons we always have leftovers for the three of us. 3. The speed. Every single time I've came in here, I've been out within 10 minutes. That's ordering, paying, and getting my food. They're super efficient. And they're friendly. There's a language barrier so don't expect full fledge conversations, but they'll say thank you with a smile. Many folk around here won't even do that. So all in all, great food, great price, great portions, friendly attitude, clean restaurant. In LA we have restaurant depot so most kitchens use the same products. Here it's a free for all. So don't expect the same as another place. It's different in their ways but DELICOUS ways. I come here at least once a week after work. Working 3rd shift, these platters definitely smack. Solid Chinese food, one of the few places that offers Mu Shu Chicken ( usually it's pork), it was quite delicious. I ordered takeaway on New Years Eve and everything was hot and tasty, my fiancé & I thoroughly enjoyed it. The food is an excellent value for the money. I highly recommend. read more

This was hit and miss for us. We had the Teriyaki chicken, teriyaki beef and a honey chicken. My wife said her food wasn't anything better than Panda Express. I enjoyed the teriyaki chicken, but when I opened the teriyaki beef, it was sitting on top of a bunch of vegetables. It felt a little deceiving... I'll admit to being a bit spoiled for Asian food, having moved here from California... I've also found that "spicy" everywhere here in NC tends to mean pretty tame by Calif. standards. Having said all that, I'm very glad to have found China Grill and am even happier that they're only a couple of miles from my house, so it's very easy to run over there for take out. They do have a few dine-in tables, but every time I've been there it's been a takeout crowd only. I've tried their Mongolian beef, combo fried rice, twice-cooked pork, "spicy" garlic chicken, egg rolls and spring rolls. Generally it is good middle of the road Chinese. Tasty, much more on the savory side than the spicy side, regardless of the menu designation. Egg rolls definitely more to my taste than the spring rolls. This is my go to for Chinese food in the area! They are fast, the food is good and the prices can not be beat anywhere! I particularly love their tom yum soup, it is a bit different than at a Thai restaurant, but i honestly like it better. It contains a lot more meat and vegetables than anywhere else I have tried it, i typically add just a bit of lime juice when I bring it home and it is absolutely perfect! Keep in mind that this is your typical fast food American Chinese place, so don't expect super traditional Chinese cooking or fancy preparation, it is simple, good food. Service is incredibly fast, typically can order and pick it up in less than 5-8 minutes, which is impressive for such a small family run place. They are designed for carry out, but do have a few tables if you want to sit and eat. The restaurant is always clean and the owners are always there, they speak English well enough to understand and are incredibly nice and happy to accommodate however they can. All in all, I highly recommend China Grill for anyone on a budget, or who needs a filling meal that tastes good! They will beat out the standard fast food place like McDonald on every level by a mile! As a side note, the portions are huge, and if kept in the container, they will stay hot for hours! Mmmm. After the Chinese buffet ASIANA closed, we have been looking for another Chinese place to be our new 'go-to'! China Grill is not really a sit-down restaurant, though their were plenty of tables if you wanted to dine there. That said, it is obviously more of a take-out place. The food tasted great; however, I have an issue that I would like to share. I ordered a small Chicken with String Beans in Garlic Sauce and wanted to order Sesame Chicken with white meat. All of the Chinese restaurants I have ordered from in the past have charged $1.00 or so to make it with white meat. When I asked if I could order it with white meat, the lady looked at me like I was crazy but asked the "chef" if it could be done. The response I received was, "He says NO". I have ordered from here so many times, I can't tell you and their egg drop soup saved my life through some terrible illnesses! We get a usual as most people but we also like variety as well. There have been some bad orders, I won't lie, but for the most part even late at night, it's great! Our favorite is kung pao chicken or sweet and sour chicken dinner with the vegetable rice for me and my husband loves the fried chicken wings and "spicy" shrimp fried rice! Don't let the outside fool you. What they lack in decor they made up for in taste. It's the best in Candler, don't think twice about giving it a shot. None of the dishes stand out as the "best" as they are all delicious, but they sure make your money go a long way. Any time I have ordered we have leftovers for the next day. We had takeout again from China Grill, the little place in the West Ridge Shopping Center. Bottom line: It was pretty good and very cheap. The food isn't nuanced, and I miss the hot Szchuan dishes of my favorite Chinese place in Carrboro, but if you just want basic Chinese dishes like fried potstickers, moo shu pork and orange chicken, this place is a deal. We paid about US$22 not including tip for 6 large fried pork dumbling, a pint of moo shu pork, a BIG serving of orange-flavored chicken and 1 1/2 "boxes" of rice. It was enough for two dinners for two people. That's a deal! A technical point: Both this place and Rejavanation coffee house aren't really in Candler but are just inside the city limits of Asheville, zip code 28806. I have only eaten here a few times over the years and until tonight it had been several years. I am so happy to have rediscovered China Grill! We got a spread of sesame tofu, pork dumplings, crab rangoon, and orange chicken. My only complaint is that my stomach wasn't big enough to eat it all myself! Everything was so good, and of course affordable! I was impressed by the sheer variety compared to other local restaurants, especially the number of tofu dishes. We were heading to a different restaurant tonight, but it was closed. We ended up at this place because we were close and it got good reviews on Yelp. We are both disappointed. The chicken teriyaki is gross. The pepper steak and onion has steak that my husband says is stringy. He pulled a big blob of fat from his dish. I asked for a vegetable egg roll instead of pork and was amazed at the amount of oil that literally poured out of one end. I ate it because I was hungry. Never again. read more

Since moving to Asheville, four years ago, this is probably the worst meal I have had the misfortune of consuming. I ordered the beef lo mein combo (which came with pork fried rice and an egg roll), an appetizer of six dumplings and a bottled tea from the cooler. For one person, the total tab was $15.20. In the first bite, there was a piece of "beef" that was so fatty and chewy, it had to be spit out. Same with the second bite. I fished out all of the "beef" and inspected it. There is no way the meat in my lo mein was beef. I have included a photo for reference, and am quite certain the meat they are billing as "beef" is actually duck skin trimmings. I ate the noodles and vegetables because I was starving and had a very limited amount of time for lunch. The six dumpling appetizer turned out to be a plate of undercooked, doughy pot stickers, and the egg roll was deemed inedible after taking the first bite and having cooking oil squirt out the bottom and cover my hand. (At first, I thought it was some amount of water, from steaming, that poured out of the egg roll, but upon closer inspection, it was a large amount of oil.) The thing that upsets me the most is that for $15, I could've had a very nice lunch, in more than a dozen other, very good restaurants! I sincerely hope this review saves customers from spending good money on very bad food. I cannot imagine anyone would ever dine here a second time. read more

I would say it is pretty good. The guy that takes the order ready knows what I want. The container is full with food, which is what I like when I an hungry. It is a friendly environment. I like that the food is actually cooked by Chinese people, if you get the point. One thing that is a pro and a con is the fact that the kitchen is open and with that comes some smell of raw ingredients and the view of the junk around the place.
