Pretty busy for a Saturday night, so you know the food will be good here. No wait if you sit at the bar top. I ordered homemade soup dumplings, pork wontons in spicy sauce, and wonton soup. The pork wontons in spicy sauce came out first. They were pretty good! I think it had peanut sauce in it, but I'm not exactly sure.. it was pretty thick. The homemade soup dumplings were delicious. Had lots of soup inside. Make sure to eat it right when they come out so the soup doesn't evaporate and get soaked up. I recommend bitting a small hole out the top and slurping the soup out, then eat it whole with the dipping sauce. The wonton soup was a bit mid. A little bland for my liking. Needed some salt and white pepper to taste. Service was okay, but they seemed pretty busy so maybe that's why.
Service was very fast and friendly! We asked for a few suggestions, and they did not disappoint! We ordered the scallion pancakes to start, and the sauce was amazing. I ended up dipping my dumplings in that sauce! It was full of flavor and went well with the scallion pancakes. For the two of us, we got 2 orders of dumplings (veggie and non-veggie), the scallion pancakes appetizer, and the green beans entree, which the waitress recommended. The garlic green beans were delicious. It definitely is entree sized, but it was good to combine with other dishes since I wouldn't normally eat a dinner of green beans with rice. I would go back for the green beans, though. I was glad they offered vegetarian dumplings with the options of fried or steamed, but I wished they would have gotten more creative with the fillings rather than generic vegetables. They were decent, but I wouldn't come back for the dumplings. I would come back for the scallion pancakes and the garlic green beans, though!
So delicious!! My first time here, I had to try one of everything. The food was all fresh and delicious. Definitely try the dumplings. I loved the scallion pancakes. Prices were reasonable.
What a journey! We sat at the bar and had the experience of a lifetime. It was a trip because of our conversation with the manager and the bartender. The food was also quite good! I had the rangoons and kung pao chicken made extra spicy. They delivered on the heat and the flavors! It was also a generous sized portion. The rangoons were just basic but flavorful and piping hot. The prices were fair for what you get. I would definitely dine here again.
I thought the service was quick, friendly, and efficient. The ambiance was nice with a few wall to wall murals and a cozy feel. It's a little tight inside when it's busy but not bad. The food was good, especially the steamed dumplings and stir fried noodles. Their wontons are worth a try as well. Overall a good choice if you're jonesing for dumplings.
This place was heaven on earth! From the second I walked in I was welcomed from the hostess. I ended up sitting at the bar. I ordered the ginger cocktail which was delicious! It was so fun watching all the amazing cocktails being made, each drink made with class and looked amazing! I ordered the spicy dumplings as a starter and I wish I ordered 10 plates of these to say it was delicious is an understatement! I seriously still think about those spicy dumplings to this day! For my main meal I ordered the steamed dumplings which was good but not as good as the spicy dumplings. I have recommended this place to all of my friends and even recommend this to a friend who was visiting a week after me. If you are in the area PLEASE visi
Man, oh, man. So happy we stopped by this spot. The food was fresh to order and delicious. We kept walking past this place and it was always busy. Plus the smell of deliciousness wafting through the air as you pass by really grabs your attention. We ordered the Homemade Soup Dumplings and the General Tsao bento box. The soup dumplings were some of the best we've had. Each dumpling was still intact and full of yummy soup. I'm always disappointed when I order soup dumplings and they've burst open already--not these. The hot broth was savory and flavorful, and the dumplings perfectly steamed. The general tsao chicken was crispy!! My son said it was the best he's ever had and I can agree! The breading was light and crispy; and the sauce was the right amount to flavor and not drown through chicken. The box also came with rice, spring roll, dumplings and won ton soup. Each element was delicious on its own but soo good altogether. Loved the ginger flavor in the spring roll and the handmade wontons in the soup were a real treat. Wish we had this closer to us, we would be regulars.
Loved, loved!! I was so excited to come here because I am obsessed with soup dumplings. They were sooo good and bonus points for having crispy chili oil ready & out on the counter :) Our sweet waitress recommended the Shumai when I asked for her opinion and it was so delicious. My boyfriend ended up ordering us a second portion, it was so good! All the ingredients tasted fresh. We look forward to returning next time we are in town. Thank you for a lovely lunch!
Great service and decent prices. I love the garlic green beans and order them like an app for the table. Soup dumplings& spicy pork dumplings. Soup dumplings are good and love the vinegary dipping sauce. Spicy pork dumplings are tasty but pretty small portion so I wouldn't plan on that being your full meal. A friend got chicken ramen and said it was pretty tasteless so I wouldn't recommend that. Great service and location downtown. They were not offering cocktails currently and I'm not sure why but i hope they return to the menu in future. You could get beer, wine or Saki.
Is it authentic yes, is it fresh yes, and is the portion size large enough, also yes. Downtown Asheville has a lot of good dining options and this is one of them. I like the open kitchen concept where you can see the chef stir fry your food if you sits at the bar. Service is very attentive, and they did a good job of the interior design, doesn't feel like a regular Chinese restaurant. Love the steam dumplings, regular dish you can taste a little heat from the wok. Of course there are better Chinese food in bigger cities but for Asheville and NC, this is a 5/5 from me.
Sweet and sour soup was interesting with lots of mushrooms and tofu. The lunch specials have very fresh veggies. They make dumplings in an open area that you can watch. The lunch bento boxes for lunch are a good value. Service was a bit slow and they left dirty plates on table when we were done. Same on other tables.
We had walked by Shanghai Dumpling House a number of times and we finally stopped in. We were sure happy we did. It was pretty busy around 7:00PM on a Saturday but we were able to get a seat at the bar. Being at a dumpling house we had to order Dim Sum and of course ordered a bit of everything. Scallion Pancakes - Crispy Fried dough with scallions with a sweet and salty sauce for dipping. If you have need had this for sure worth a try. Spring Rolls - Everyone knows spring rolls but these were much better then expected. They had much for flavor then most I have had. Pork Belly Bao - These are always a go to for us. It mostly because we love Pork Belly and the soft bao buns are always so good and we can never find them in stores. Fried Pork Dumplings - These were some of the best fried dumplings I have ever had. Tender and full of flavor with just the right amount of crisp. Homemade Soup Dumplings - These were the best soup dumplings I had ever had. These are four sure homemade and you can tell just by the dough they us. For sure much better then any I have had in Jacksonville. General Tso's Chicken - This I think was the best General Tso's Chicken I have ever had. The sauce was fantastic an the chicken was always crispy and didn't lose any crunch which can be an issue with General Tso's Chicken. I still dream about it. We will for sure be coming back to Shanghai Dumpling House. It was our favorite restaurant from our most resend trip.
Stopped here for a late lunch while in Asheville. We were sat immediately and ordered a couple of drinks, while taking a look at the menu. We ordered the soup dumplings, two of the bao buns, and shared a Mongolian beef entree which came with white rice. The soup dumplings were very good - very light and had a good bit of flavor to them. The bao was probably the MVP, with the pork being very tender and succulent, and the sauce was very flavorful. The Mongolian beef was pretty standard, way too much vegetables as far as protein to veg ratio goes. Our waitress was nice, and it was a good meal.
We were headed elsewhere when we spotted the menu on the window. The menu was the magnet but the food, service and ambiance sold it. First, beg for a bar seat. You get a free show from the chefs wearing black pants, white jackets and hats. These folks can cook! Fried rice with chicken was excellent as was stir-fry noodles and chicken. Both meaty and satisfying. Very tasty steamed vegetable dumplings (a six-pack) on the side. Waters to drink but beer was available. A very satisfying $40 dinner on Sunday night. You gave a ton of choices along Biltmore; this one will surprise you've . read more
Went a few times over the years and most recently this summer. I'll say this past visit wasn't as great as other times I've gone but for the most part it's still a solid choice. **the main thing that I feel they don't do as great are the soup dumplings, which is a go-to item there. Soup is ok but the dumpling itself aren't as strong and much more easier to fall apart. Also got the Karaage again and it's the same good fried chicken we've always gotten. Service was good, plenty of servers there and you have somewhat an open kitchen to see some cooks. Would recommend. read more

Husband and I ordered the bento box lunch specials. It was well put together: entrees, a cup of rice, 1 spring roll and a cup of hot sour soup. For $14, great lunch ever while visiting Asheville. Food tasted authentic Asian. Highly recommended. read more

We enjoyed soup dumplings, fried dumplings and calamari all at a reasonable price. I would 100% recommend both dumplings, full of flavor and a decent amount. I wouldn't recommend the calamari, it wasn't horrible but it's very thick, almost onion ring sized, and very stringy. read more

Nice place for lunch. Had soup dumplings, they were a little soft and broke easily but were tasty. The Mongolian beef was really good and ingredients were obviously fresh, as was the Chicken and Broccoli. The service was painfully slow and had me debating if I should give 3 stars but food was too good. read more
A solid rating of 4..maybe a 4.5. Had a nice lunch of a couple of appetizers and a luncheon special. Had the wontons in chili oil, the crab Rangoon and the Kung Pao Chicken lunch special. The wontons were perfect and the spice was great. Crab Rangoon very good and no crabby taste. The lunch special of Kung Pao chicken was just down right lacking of any taste. The spring roll and hot & soup that acccompanied the Kung Pao were very good. Just Had to keep searching for flavor to help the chicken dish. Would not order again. But would return and get something different. read more

Just what I needed to warm me up after an afternoon walking around! I stopped by here on my way out of town last week and had a great cup of hot n sour soup and spicy pork wontons. It's a small, tight space, but there's both regular and bar seating. I sat at the bar and ordered both items immediately, I knew what I was in the mood for and the server brought the food out a couple minutes later. The soup was tasty and the wontons had a great spice to them. Pretty standard/regular price for the fare. I'd definitely come back! read more
Thankfully they were open on the holiday! We did a pick up order. It was close to the hotel and ready pretty fast. The food was amazing! I did not know what to expect. Everything was fresh and hot! There was some kick to it but nothing on fire! I didn't realize so much flavor can be packed into something so small! The prices were very reasonable too! read more
Came in for dinner on my recent trip to Asheville - it was perfect with the cold, rainy weather. SO COMFORTING. The dumplings were super tasty - nice and hot, plenty of filling and an outrageously delicious dipping sauce. The spring rolls were crunchy and thankfully shellfish-free so I could enjoy! Service was fast, food came out quickly and it was an easy dinner. I'll be back! read more
This was our first time to try Shanghai Dumpling House. We just happened upon it on our way to Barleys which was closed on a Monday. This was a great place. We were seated immediately, and the service was excellent!! My recommendations are the house steamed buns. They are amazing, and for the entree, I suggest the garlic eggplant. It comes with a delicious sweet sauce that makes this dish out of this world!! read more

We enjoyed our food a lot here and the service Was attentive. The stir fried noodles or lo mein tasted homemade and very fresh. The general TSO we're crispy and delicious. We really enjoyed the pan fried dumplings too. We tried them again for some take out of the dumplings and I tried the soup dumplings but I probably would suggest only getting in house because they were good leftover as all the soup kind of slipped out, as expected. read more
The problem with living far enough away from Asheville (and usually eating in West Asheville when we come to town) is that we don't try everything, we find what we love and eat it again months and months later on our next visit. And after a few visits to Shanghai Dumpling House, we have definitely found our faves. Today, for two of us, we had the soup dumplings, of course, the pan fried pork buns, and the fried shrimp dumplings. For veg, we had string beans but if I were alone I'd've ordered the eggplant. The soup dumplings were full up with steaming hot soup, incredibly emotionally soothing, and better yet with a bit of the vinegar sauce poured in after you slurp out the soup. The small dish is intended for dipping, so my pours got kinda messy. I prefer a tiny pitcher for pouring, or even a soy sauce style table bottle. The pan fried pork buns were tasty but were completely overshadowed by the unexpected glory that was the shrimp fried dumplings. Now these we tasted and immediately ordered a second serving of. Shrimp. Fried. Dumplings. Just a meatball of basically just shrimp, tasting of all the briny goodness of the ocean, wrapped in a dough of the perfect chew and crispness where it frizzled on the pan. I know there's other stuff on the menu, but it's a dumpling house and a good one. For your meal, focus on the dumplings and everything else kind of falls in line. read more
Four of us were visiting Asheville for a few nights. This place was on my radar. Having traveled to China, I'm always on the look out for some good Soup dumplings (xiaolongbao). The place was filled with diners but there was a table for us right away. We had a variety of foods, to include the soup dumplings. They were excellent! Loved the broth and meaty inside. Everything we ordered was also excellent (spring rolls, Stir-Fried Noodles with Shrimp, etc.). My cell phone was out of juice so I missed out on taking my food photos. Very good service and reasonable prices. I would definitely come back here. read more
Took the kids here for dinner, we were seated by the hostess . Then waited 20 minutes for someone to come over and take our order. This place was not busy at all the time we were there. There were 10 people working, 4 in the kitchen, 1 hostess 5 wait staff this is a small restaurant . So I don't understand what the problem was. Any way the kids got dumplings the soup dumplings smelled musky very interesting stinky smell. Don't know it that was normal. The fried dumplings came out looked and smelled better. The kids liked the fried dumplings a lot better. The restaurant was clean . But cluttered in the kitchen. No one was friendly at all. Disappointed for an Asian restaurant. Usually they are clean and friendly, not this restaurant! Don't know if I will be back! read more
It's been nearly two weeks since I've had any Asian food. My body was craving rice! We've passed this place several times while touring this city. We kept passing it and saying we need to try it. We'll finally we did and were not sorry! We ordered the spring rolls, scallion pancake, Shanghai Dumplings, green beans with garlic and soy sauce and steamed white rice. Everything was great! There's a few Japanese food items on the menu which I found strange, but why not if the cook knows how to make it. The place was not crowded. After all, it's between lunch & dinner time and perfect for us who are still avoiding crowds. Very clean and orderly, we would come back next time we're in town! read more

Highly recommend!! We were quoted a half hour wait and only ended up to be 10 minutes. It's such a quaint, small spot that has several tables and some limited bar seating as well. The service was friendly and attentive and the food was delicious! We ordered spring rolls- tasty and amazing, the kung pao chicken which also had vegetables, super fresh and delicious! Lastly, and my one and only complaint, we ordered the scallops appetizer which came with two scallops and some broccoli, was way overpriced at $15. The scallops were delicious but at a high cost! Take note of the drinks as well, I had the peartini, absolutely wonderful!! Highly recommend :) read more
I really enjoyed Shanghai Dumpling House and look forward to going back. Their homemade soup dumplings are delicious and if you sit at the bar you can actually watch them be made. The restaurant is always busy, but I would say worth the wait. Everything that I had tried has been fresh and a comforting option for those chilly Asheville evenings. read more
