I do like the food. But it doesn't have much local competition. Asheville is really hurting for quick Chinese. I like the fact they let me alter dishes when requested -- it does cost me more but that's how it is around here. The food is good for what you're getting. I like all the flavors! I wish the menu had mei fun. Always quick. Always friendly. I will definitely stay a customer. I just don't know how to say I recommend it because it's not outstanding and everyone has such different Chinese preferences. I like it that's what I can say! And my husband likes it too. read more

First time at this place. I ordered food to go. I'm used to good Chinese food in Los Angeles and San Francisco. I didn't expect this to measure up, but they don't seem to be trying very hard. Certainly no effort is being made to create the restaurant environment. It was empty. My experience was similar to another reviewer -- depends on the dish. Hot and sour soup was decent. Another reviewer mentioned ordering a chicken dish which had very little chicken. So I ordered chicken lo mein and asked for extra chicken. But even placing the order like this, there was VERY little chicken. Hot and sour soup was okay. Wonton soup broth was okay, but the wontons were inedible -- tasted like drywall plaster. Very strange. I might go back a second time and try something else. But agree with another poster -- even Panda Express is better. read more

Ok ok. Here we are. Taking this as it is. That twice a year delicious Chinese takeout. For that, we are a win and a go. Ordered pickup here through door dash. Quick estimated time but I ended up waiting about 12 minutes over. Also the inside of the place stressed me out- mostly all the plastic wrap. Maybe Covid leftovers? The redeeming qualities were in the energy of the staff and the adorable older couples talking across the small restaurant about how they remembered this local place since high school. Now to the food. Very affordable prices. The spring rolls were small but cheap and delicious. Perfectly crispy and a great app. The crab Rangoon a were a bit pricey. Or so I thought until I saw the quantity. Did we eat them all despite the large number? You bet. Warm and creamy and delicious. The chicken lo mein was plentiful and delish. As was the crab but as predicted very little crab in it. I'd say the smalls were still two meals with an app. Great sauce. Overall wonderful for what we wanted. read more

For $10.17 total, No. 1 China is a pretty good deal for takeout Chinese food. Not authentic or healthy, but tasty and very filling. Food came out very fast too, less than 10 minutes. The restaurant itself is a little run down and the buffet looks questionable, but I ordered the Pork Lo Mein to go and got a massive portion of pretty salty noodles with not a lot of pork. But for $10, I'd definitely get this again! read more

I don't know if it changed hands or the storm brought in all new food and equipment but HOLY COW! They just reopened after the hurricane and normally I have to drive to Lieu's in South Carolina to get good food. Best Chinese takeout in the Asheville area! Exactly what you're looking for in a Chinese place. Inexpensive, large portions, crispy, greasy, filling, etc. The other reviewers apparently don't know what good Chinese takeout is. It's not meant to be a 5-star restaurant. It's not meant to be "authentic". It's meant to satisfy your intense craving for Chinese-American food for very little money, and that's exactly what No. 1 China does. Great people who work there, and the place has been open for soooo many years. There's a reason they're still around. I love Chinese food but can't seem to find anything as good as home. Maybe it is because I grew up just outside of San Francisco so my standards are very high. If you have not had great Chinese food then you will like this. I thought it was ok but probably won't try it again. It is better than what you can get as Ingles but I would rather go to Panda Express than here. The food was oily and left me feeling bloated and queasy. It didn't taste fresh. The flavors were not quite right. I ate maybe a quarter of what I ordered which was not much and threw out the rest. Very disappointed. I had springs rolls and only ate half of one, fried rice which is normally my favorite but had too much oil, and chow mien which I had been craving but can make better at home myself (which is not saying much). read more

Great for quick call in of food to go or you could go in and sit down dining. Order at register and they will bring food out to you. We were passing through and didn't have many choices off the interstate when going through the mountains. Found this place online and when pulling into parking lot we were a little unsure because the shopping center had out of business stores surrounding it. With not many options, we decided to give it a shot. Was able to order lunch specials since it was only little past 2pm. Lunch specials option is still plenty of food. We had to ask for boxes after eating all we could. Food was great, everything fresh including our soups and crab Rangoon was delicious. Noticed several different people come in for pick up orders while there as well. It's definitely a great pick for Chinese. read more

Second time ordering and again not good. I won't be back. I ordered the veggie lo mein and even spent an upgrade charge for more veggies, but barely have any. I could literally count the carrot sticks and onions on one hand, and then just a handful of broccoli. That was it. Tasteless. We also orders the moo shu pork. The pancakes weren't individually wrapped, so they all stuck together. The only reason I gave them 2 stars is because the Chinese donuts were good. read more

I've been disappointed in most takeout Chinese places in Asheville, which is a bummer. I have pretty much accepted that excellent Chinese takeout doesn't exist here. However, No. 1 China is pretty alright! Solid B food, nice employees, and immaculately clean. Price is nice as well. So far we have tried mixed vegetables (pretty good), Mu Shu vegetable (bland, but okay with mustard and soy sauce), and Singapore Mei Fun, which husband reported was not amazing but was pretty good and not too greasy, which is a common issue. Glad to have this in our takeout arsenal. read more

Favorite Chinese place in Asheville area. The General Tso's chicken is good and the fried Dumplings were fantastic.

Service was fast. Food wasn't that great. Egg rolls were cabbage only. Kung pao Chicken wasn't good. Place seemed clean enough.

The food was decent and the lady who took my order was nice, but when she repeated my order upon pickup she repeated back "sesame chicken" when I had ordered General Tso's. I corrected her, she asked if the sesame was fine in which I told her no but no worries & I didn't mind to wait a few minutes for the correction- in which I waited four minutes so that the majority of the sesame seeds were scraped off and the chicken rolled again in tso sauce. I tipped a decent amount for a togo, more than what I would have because she was fixing something, even though it wasn't my error. I wish this would have been correctly fixed like I was told it would be. read more

Having just moved to Asheville, we're enjoying exploring all the fabulous restaurants in the vicinity. Asheville seems to have a dearth of Chinese restaurants, so we expanded our search to Black Mountain. We are so glad we did! Number One China is hard to find, at the far end of a little shopping plaza, next to a Dollar General. The menu is astounding in its variety, and the prices are incredible. We ate for under $18; my husband ordered hot and sour soup and shrimp with black bean sauce, and I had sesame chicken. Both the soup and the chicken were huge portions; the hot and sour soup ranks among the best I've ever eaten, and that includes several restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area. We will definitely be returning, for the quality as well as the price. I give this 4 stars because the menu is really geared toward the American palate, so not true Chinese. read more

I have been getting take out food here for years. But in recent years I've stopped. I feel like the food has gone downhill. Extremely disappointed. Smaller portions. Not as tasty. I had Raw teriyaki beef sticks that you couldn't even bite into... the rice is not good. Not like what you would expect for Chinese fried rice. It just looked like an instant rice to me and tasted like it too. I don't know what happened but I think their food has gone way downhill. this restaurant was not good. we first walked in and the place just looked run down and dirty. the floors were concerned in food and dust and there was a dead mosquito on the floor close to me. the windows and door glass was dirty and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a week. the food options were small, didn't taste good, everything was bland and tasted like dust. wish i got a refund.
