Out of respect to the hospitality world I bit my tongue in stars here. As someone who recalls the OG China grill... it definitely is not the same. The long and short - I ordered the 2 "signatures" dishes, Peking duck and ginger curry lobster. The duck was wildly mushy, like nothing I've ever had. My wife commented on how mushy the meat was... that's until the lobster came out. Amazingly even mire porridge like then the duck - not even sure how this even happens. I have now been two China Grill twice since their opening. Both experiences left me with more to be desired. First experience, I will keep it brief. We ordered a $300 bottle of wine. Server broke the cork inside the bottle trying to open it. The wine glasses they served it with are basically $5 Jethro stockware. Disappointing. We were a party of 4 and had been sitting for 75 minutes when we were asked how everything was going. Not a single dish had come out. Embarrassing. After 90 minutes, and all dishes being served, they left the check at the table without asking if we wanted dessert. Manager came out and asked us to please excuse them since they had only been open 8 days. You are excused, I suppose, but for $900 you need to do better for your guests. Second experience, decided to give them another shot since the first excuse was they had just opened. Brought friends for a birthday. We sat down and ordered, and within 3 minutes, we were bombarded with food. Nothing was paced at all. At one point we had 5 plates sitting on the table and were barely able to keep up. This time, no excuse. Dishes: dumplings are all good. Lamb ribs are okay, very very fatty. Beef Szechuan is not going to be what you think for Oriental food. It's a steak with sauce over French fries. Weird. Duck salad was ok, nothing like it used to be back in the day. The fried spinach is excellent. The steak & eggs was mediocre. The tuna crispy rice even worse - why reinvent the wheel? Just knock it out of the park with a classic. The peking duck dish to share was very good. The main fish dish I did not try but the people eating it liked. Overall, I was hoping for this to be a great comeback but it has missed the mark for me to return or recommend. read more

We had a wonderful dinner at the new China Grill located in Bal Harbor. The restaurant is beautiful and our service was excellent. During placing our orders, we were told to place all appetizers and entrées at once so that the timing would be handled properly. The food is served to be shared so we shared the lobster pancakes, the pastrami egg roll and the truffle & avocado crispy rice. Everything was delicious, but the most interesting app we enjoyed was the onion soup dumpling. It was super creative and delicious. We then ordered a protein per person or to share with one other person which included the duck, ribeye, sea bass and chicken. Everyone enjoyed the protein options. All the sides were delicious, but I could not stop thinking about the crispy spinach. It was absolutely amazing and actually somehow dissolves in your mouth like cotton candy. One of the most memorable items that I will go back to have again. Finally for dessert, we shared for the table, the chocolate lava cake and banana pudding. Both were delicious. I stopped by for the brunch preview with friends, and it definitely did not disappoint. This was my first time visiting, and I was excited to check it out. The restaurant is located in the former Le Zoo space at Bal Harbour Shops. It made a great first impression from the moment I walked in. The food was outstanding. We started with the cod crispy rice and the crispy calamari salad, and both were excellent. The cod crispy rice had the perfect balance of crispy texture and fresh, flavorful fish, while the calamari salad was light, crisp, and beautifully prepared. We also ordered the steamed dumplings and the lobster pancakes, which were just as impressive. The dumplings were delicate and flavorful, and the lobster pancakes were rich, perfectly cooked, and packed with lobster. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented, making it easy to see the attention to detail in the kitchen. Checked out the new China Grill in Bal Harbour and the food was excellent across the board. The standout, though, was our food runner Fabiola. She was warm, personable, and genuinely made our evening -- honestly surprised she's not already waiting tables. If a promotion is on the table, she's earned it. Management should take note. To begin with the 3 hostesses upfront for some reason were all beyond miserable and had atrocious attitudes. Next, the atmosphere is a zero, they blast the weirdest selection of music I've ever heard. They have garbage outdoor chairs inside with a cushion thrown on them. The service is the absolute worst, we ordered a bunch of food server didn't course it out it all came at the same time with no room on the table, they brought dishes to the wrong table. We had a great meal and the service was perfect. Silvio was attentive and helpful. I saw a review about gratuity. It is included 20percent and that is split over the staff. If you leave more it goes directly to the person serving you. That is not something you are forced to do and it is standard in miami at this point. I don't even know where to begin to tell you how bad this restaurant is. I never thought I would ever be longing to have the previous restaurant back here, Le Zoo, but China Grill is so bad I think anything would be better. Let's start with the only positive and that was our waitress Stephanie. Extremely personable and really helped to articulate the vibe the restaurant is trying to create here but unfortunately for her she can only do so much. The food is abysmal. And the only thing worse than abysmal food is abysmal food that comes out one dish at a time with 25 minutes until the next one. If you enjoy going out to dinner with your wife, receiving one appetizer, waiting 25 minutes for the second one, then three minutes later one of the entrees and an order of rice come while you wait another 25 minutes for the second entree than this place is for you! If I was Bal Harbour shops I would start looking for the next tenant because the mess isn't going to last very long. They actually believe because China Grill was in Miami ten years ago that they can get away with this ridiculousness but as we all know a lot has changed here in ten years so someone should let them know. Much like the disaster that was in the Slim's space before Slim's (I think it was called Aba), this one will be gone in a couple years because it is really that bad. My wife and I stopped in at the new China Grill at Bal Harbour Shops and sat at the bar. The space is small but fine, and to be fair, the bartender was calm and straightforward with us; the issue here isn't the staff; it's the policy. The menu lists a mandatory 20% service charge that, per the bartender, does NOT go to your server or bartender; it's distributed among the rest of the staff. Tipping your server is still expected on top of that. We watched the couple next to us question this, have one drink, and leave. We asked the bartender to confirm: if we leave our usual 25% tip on top of the 20% service charge, are we effectively paying 45%? His answer, calmly, was yes. We eat out several times a week and have no problem with a service charge. We have never seen a mandatory 20% charge that excludes the server and still expects a full tip on top of it. We finished our drinks and left without ordering food. I can't speak to the kitchen, but the pricing model alone was enough to end our evening. Disappointing. read more

The resistant is too dark, the service was good albeit slow, and everything was too close together it was horrible just sitting down it felt like everyone was sitting on top of eachother. We were waiting for this restaurant to open, we remember China grill from the the 90's, we ordered spring rolls which were very rubbery, duck salad with Tuscan kale, was impossible to chew. After putting in a reservation a week ahead, when I called to confirm we were sitting inside due to the weather, we found out china grill cancelled the reservation. We asked to speak with a manager but the gave us some excuse and told us to email them and they might get back to us. Not a good look. We explained to Makoto and they were happy to take us instead.
