We used to order take-out regularly when we lived around the corner, but once we moved (long before the fire) it just wasn't convenient and there were other Chinese restaurants (better and worse) closer. Recently, my daily routine has brought me back in to Frederick and I drive right by the China Garden. So today, I picked up some food. It was a little after 1:00, and business was steady, but I didn't wait long for my order, which was brought to me where I sat. The hot dishes were still warm by the time I got home, nothing leaked out of the containers, and everything we ate was delicious. (I can't report on the egg roll that came with the lunch special because we didn't eat it.) Our order consisted of wonton soup, hot & sour soup, triple delight (lunch special), steamed dumplings, and California and eel roll. I requested no MSG and double checked that the triple delight was, in fact, spicy. The soups were fine-nothing to write home about, but I was impressed with how much pork was in the wontons and that the dough was so tender. The sushi (12 pieces for 11.95) was fresh and flavorful. If I didn't have to split the order with my husband, I would have happily eaten it all and sacrificed my half of the triple delight, which we also split. I was expecting the Triple Delight to have a slimier sauce with maybe tough scallops in the mix because that's usually how this dish turns out no matter where I order it, but the scallop I ate was tender. I ordered too much food and we had no room for the dumplings, but I wanted to sample one before they cooled. So, I ate 1/2 a dumpling. The dough was supple and filled with a generous amount of pork filling. The dipping sauce was tasty and not overly salty. We were very satisfied with our meal, and I would have given China Garden 5 stars based on this visit if the dough used for the wontons and dumplings was thinner (a rare find) and if there were more herbs and spice flavors in the main dish. Overall though, the quality of the food today and the portion size were very good. The standout -what I would go out of my way for - was the sushi and the chocolate fortune cookie. Ordered take out sushi. Specifically, a red clam al la cart, tuna roll, yellow radish roll, and sweet potato roll. After driving home 20 minutes home. I discovered they gave me the wrong order. No tuna roll instead it was a California roll and no red clam, instead sushi rice wrapped in tofu. Rather then driving back another 20 minutes I ate what was giving. I called the restaurant expecting at lest a partial refund. Instead they said come back (would have been 40 min total drive.) They wanted to give me what I did not receive in my first order. I believe this is very poor customer service and will not deal with them again. Since the ticket had the correct information I can only guess someone else also got a wrong order. The service was great & everyone was very nice. They give you complimentary pickled cucumbers (which were delicious), crispy things & hot tea. We ordered egg rolls, which were more like large spring rolls, which I liked, but my husband did not. My husband & I both ordered General Toas with fried rice. Mine tasted good, but it was hard-so it is the extra fried kind or maybe just over fried. It is a large portion so I only ate half ( can make two meals out of it). My husband really didn't like his which is weird because he eats anything & everything & is not picky. I tasted his & I did not like it. His General Toas was really sweet & did not taste like the dish normally does. All I can think of is he asked for it not to be spicy & that is why his tasted so different (& gross). But this is how he always orders it & normally they just remove the heat, never had it have such a different taste. His was also hard. Over all I would say this place has standard Chinese food with nothing special other than the cucumbers, but the service was really good. read more

Best Chinese food in Frederick! My family was able to go back for the first time since the fire. We were impressed by the new and improved interior. We were greeted with excellent service! I never think anywhere deserves a 5 star review as I always believe there is room for improvement but, this restaurant is my exception to my rule. After years of rebuild after a fire closed the restaurant in 2019 this place is coming back better than ever! The rebuild is beautiful and kept sparkling clean, the staff could not be better and the food is by far the absolute best Chinese food I have ever had. Brought to your table first are some of tastiest Chinese Pickled Cucumbers as an appetizer, you can't get any tastier than these little gems are! Our meal continued with their Hot and Sour soup and their Egg Drop Corn soup both, are delicious! Their Fried Dumplings are by far the absolute best dumplings I have ever had anywhere! I got lo mein with chicken and shrimp and there was only 1 shrimp.... the overall taste of the lo main was awful and left a horrible taste in my mouth. Ordered takeout. First time since re-build. Entrees were excellent as before but the steamed dumplings were very different. Thinly wrapped and not the thick hand made dough they used to be. Certainly did not look like the ones shown here. The dumplings were one of my favorite items at China Garden. So sad they are not the same as before. Not usually a fan of Chinese takeout but fried rice on a lazy, rainy day go hand in hand. We ordered the pork fried rice, Szechuan beef, Szechuan eggplant, and General Tso's chicken. The best dish was the beef. Great flavor and tender. The fried rice was good too but the pork was a bit on the dry side. The chicken and eggplant were good, but what turned me off was the exorbitant (and unnecessary) addition of water chestnuts. We all know water chestnuts are a cheap filler but what's funny about this is the restaurant didn't need to add it at all! There was plenty of eggplant and chicken in the respective dishes. There was no need for water chestnuts. (Honestly, there's never a need for them. Can you tell I don't like them?) I don't like a random crunch when it's not really part of the dish. I think I would've liked both dishes more had there not been a plethora of water chestnuts. I liked that the dishes weren't too salty. What was also cool about our order was the addition of chilled, seasoned cucumber sides. Great idea. I really enjoyed that. I'd give them an extra half star if we could rate with halves but it wasn't quite a 4. I think we may go back another time to eat in and see how it is. read more

Very great experience overall. We were seated right away and our waiter was very nice. I ordered sushi, orange chicken with just white meat, and fried rice. Everything was hot and very delicious. The appetizer that we ordered was the fried crab wontons and came out really fast. A lot of leftovers for dinner tonight as well. Had lunch here last week. Greeted promptly and seated with complimentary hot tea and homemade pickles. I've never had pickles at a Chinese restaurant, but they were tasty. My nephew and I both had the lunch combos. He had sweet and sour chicken and I had kung pao chicken. My hot and sour soup was not spicy but was much more substantial than the primarily broth soup I typically seem to receive. My lunch was good....but had no "pao" to it. My nephews sweet and sour was odd and had cherries with stems on it. I have never heard of that, but he is 15 so he eats anything. The service was good, food was quickly prepared. This is probably the worst chinese place i have ever been. Let's start with the atmosphere: it was decent but it was lacking in chinese decorations and such. I thought i was walking into an italian restaurant! The real killer for this restaurant was the food. The waiter did not speak decent english took my order. I asked him if i could get Hunan beef instead of the chicken but i was told they couldn't do it. So i decided to order kung pao chicken. I would say the wonton soup was good but it was lukewarm. When the food finally came out after 20 mins of waiting (there were 10-15 people at the most), i started to dig in. I never had such a dry kung pao chicken until i came to this restaurant. The sauce was palatable and dry as Sahara desert. What really makes me angry is the fact that they didn't check their food and i was served an undercooked dish. Couple chickens in that dish were undercooked. It was so raw that i thought it was still alive and running around. I talked to one of the waiters and they didn't charge me for their preposterous food. I demanded another order to go because i didn't want to stay at that point. The waiter said okay and i waited. Waited 30 mins and they told me i didn't order anything. This is probably the worst chinese restaurant experience I've ever had. If i could give them 0/5. I would. read more

Crispy Beef - Not crispy, not in a spicy brown sauce as advertised (and is usual for this dish). Instead the meat was soggy and drowning in a bright orange sauce with a rather "off" sour-ish taste. Egg rolls - Very small, the size of spring rolls. Overcooked to the point that the gray filling was completely dry and the wrapper brittle. Had a vague cardboard taste/smell (well, the way I'd expect cardboard to taste). Honestly the worst Chinese food we have ever had. Threw it all in the trash! Literally. There is a reason China Garden has won the "Best of Frederick" consistently for the past decade or more - they are the best! We live in their delivery area and frequently get dinner from them! Their portions are extremely generous and it's always very hot when it arrives. They have a wide variety and it always seems fresh, especially the veggies. I have to wonder if they make there food so overly sweet to cater to Americans with no idea of what good Chinese food is. How can Frederick Magazine promote this place? Did something go wrong since there reviews years ago? Or was that simply paid for? For one, most food sold in Chinese Restaurants are not really Chinese food. They often laughed at the crap they would never personally eat but the customers bought. So HELLO, PLEASE STOP MAKING THIS BAD FOOD AND MAKE BETTER FOOD! Frederick deserves a good Chinese Restaurant. Which yes in China, there are flavors from regions that can be very different. But this is more than just from a "sweet region". This is hands down, the worst Chinese food I have ever had in the US or in Taiwan. The Japanese food here was terrible! The Miso soup broth was sweet. Miso soup doesn't take sugar. (Just go across the street to the Asian super market, get some Miso paste, add water, dried seaweed and tofu. PLEASE DO NOT ADD SUGAR.) Some fresh sliced scallions on top would be nice. The sashimi fish was limited in selection. I should say I was seeking sashimi and no, doesn't exist here. Where do we go for some good Benji Sashimi. The Tempura was HORRIBLE! The coating was like flour because they ran out of Rice Flour. At least tell the consumer you ran out of the ingredients so we can say no thank you to whatever is the make shift food. The twice cooked pork was terrible, sweet. We had 4 dishes, all were bad. I am also reading people's reviews of 4-5 stars yet saying things are not good. People need to rate this accordingly. If half of the restaurant is not to your liking, then I would give it a 3 star maximum. This restaurant is the worse Chinese or Asian food I have ever had. Oh and the tea is terrible too. I'll make it simple though: -fantastic food that always tastes fresh and flavorful -fantastic service -great ambiance and decorations -will not break your wallet -the best won ton soup i've ever had -the only place i get the kung pao beef at (it's that good) -HANDS DOWN...THE BEST WATER IN THE CITY. Our party of six had lunch here yesterday. One lady enjoyed her food but the rest of us did not. The Pupu platter that I shared with a friend had rancid meat on it.
