Will never go back as the food was inedible - burnt fried rice and unfriendly atmosphere.

Been here 2-3 times now. I don't come looking for a pleasant interaction with the counter staff - currently no dine-in. I come because the Lunch Specials are a good deal for me as I am not a big person. I get the simple Roast Pork Fried Rice and it comes with a spring roll and a cup of wonton soup (2 dumplings) with a bag of crispy fried noodles. I find it a substantial and filling lunch at a reasonable price. I'm picky about spring rolls, and these are good. They are fried well and the filling is not mushy. They don't beat the MyThai spring rolls, but they are decent "egg roll style" filling spring rolls. The crispy noodles are crisp not stale, and they taste fresh. They are great in the broth. The fried rice is the brown soy sauce style, with standard peas, carrots, and onions. The pork is flavorful and there is enough for some in every spoonful. The one thing that wasn't right is the bubble tea. They shouldn't offer bubbles, as what i got in my drink was the wrong texture. I didn't ask for jelly, but the bubbles had a sort of hard jelly like texture - No bounce. The thai tea was good, but they shouldn't offer bubbles. Please give them a try for a good lunch set meal. read more

So, during the Covid-19 pandemic a lot of restaurants were forced to close their doors including my favorite/go-to Chinese restaurant which will remain nameless. What's a guy to do at 7 p.m. on a Sunday night when the fam bam is looking at me to make some decisions about dinner? I noticed lots of people posting about Hunan Gourmet in the Frederick Take Out Facebook Group so I said...."Let's Do It." I'M GLAD WE DID IT!!! Wow! I can't believe I'm saying this but I'm not sure which restaurant (my go-to or Hunan Gourmet) is better. Everything had excellent flavor and the General Tso's chicken was perfectly crunchy and juicy ( I refuse to say the "M" word...don't do it!). This is going to be a longer review, because I have a long, long history with Hunan Gourmet. It is where my mother, Kim, and I have gone together as "our spot" since I was a child. We've taken our grandparents with us to Hunan before they passed away, have introduced dear friends and family to this very spot, and have come here for so many milestones: after getting my braces off, after I turned 18, before learning to drive for one of the first times, when my grandmother was released from assisted living for her first lunch "out," when I began college at FCC. When NO other place in Frederick could seem to accommodate my pickiness, Hunan was there. I even met my boyfriend here, and it is amazing to have such a beloved place where we first met! When we first ate here, he got the orange chicken, and now that we both eat vegan + vegetarian, we can still get our favorite dishes here! Hunan even got me to fall in love with bubble tea (the vanilla and taro flavors are AMAZING). -The vegetarian spring rolls are the best you'll find anywhere. -The hot tea is a must, and inexpensive! -The flavors are always strong and the food is filling. -Service is practically guaranteed to be friendly! We have the same waiter almost every time (I believe their name is Nick? Maybe?) and they know our order, get it accurate every time, and are all-around appreciated by us for being so accommodating with any dietary alterations we make. We bring my boyfriend's four year old son here very often, and he adores looking at the fish in the large tank and seeing all the colors adorning the restaurant. My sisters all get something they like here. When my birth father was stuck in a nursing home nearby for rehabilitation, he asked for Chinese food and I brought him a big order from Hunan that he devoured! He said it made his stay so much better. I've even brought my boss from work here, and it's become one of our "spots." :) We are forever grateful for the memories Hunan Gourmet has given us! I write this review as I am 2,300 miles away from home and definitely feeling homesick for my favorite place! read more

Great dumplings and decor! The fried veggie dumplings were all I got -- and they were the best ones I'd ever had, with a really great texture and superb filling. The art on the walls was very nice to look at even though I only saw it briefly a couple of times on my way out after ordering and in and out again picking up and leaving ... but what a great find I happened upon by chance when I stopped in this shopping center! So happy I went. I live in Rockville and I want to drive to Frederick just to have those dumplings again! Oh, the sauce was excellent, too! :-D read more

Ordered lunch today from the "Chef's Specialties" portion of the menu. I got Orange Beef and it was almost inedible. Extremely chewy and hard to cut with a knife let alone your fork. Zero stars if possible. Extremely rude customer service. Walked in for a to go order. The person at the counter was very grumpy. I asked about few recommendations. He mentioned 1 dish but didn't explain properly what was in that dish. The menu said stir fry in a brown sauce Asked him what the brown sauce is, he replied in a very annoyed tone that it is something like a dipping sauce but stir fried. The etiquette of a good customer service is to properly explain what's in the menu. Instead a snobbish attitude is not acceptable. Very poor experience. I ended up not ordering and I just walked out. I ordered some food tonight... 2/3 of the food got here on time and 1/3 of my ordered never showed up. I tried calling the place back and when I told to someone about my missing order they said "Ok, we take it now" and after 2 hours of waiting I realized the food is not showing up. So I paid $60 plus tip and only got $40 worth of food delivered. The service is almost none existent with a phone number that sometimes just flat out tells you it's disconnected, the food is a perfect 6 out of 10. I'm very disappointed specially when all I wanted to do was bring a bit of joy to my kids during this quarantine. A disappointing experience to say the least. read more

We popped into this little restaurant on a dreary Sunday to have some warm food and it was pretty yummy. Very much your typical American Chinese food place. We ordered the Szechuan beef, garlic eggplant, fried rice, and hot and sour soup. The hot and sour soup and fried rice were really yummy. The garlic eggplant was a little bit too sweet for my taste and the Szechuan beef was good, but not quite the Szechuan flavor I envisioned. The service here is very good. The wait staff is kind and attentive. The restaurant is clean, and your food comes out quick. If your looking for warm Chinese to fill your yummy this place is worth giving a try. read more

My family and I have been patrons of Hunan Gourmet for more than 2 decades. During that time, we have enjoyed interacting with the owners and staff alike. Everyone has always been welcoming and pleasant, and I have recommended them often. Up to now, I have always given them 5-star reviews. Today, I made the mistake of knocking on the locked door with my key when I came to pick up my order. When I first knocked, no one came to the door. I looked in the window to see several people, one sitting playing on her phone and another person in the at the counter. I knocked again thinking they did not hear me. Still, there was no response or acknowledgement. I knocked a third time, this time with my key. Instead of being greeted in their usual friendly manner, when the door opened I was immediately scolded by Ning for using my key to knock on the door. I explained that nobody responded to my initial attempts so I used the key to amplify the sound. Instead of accepting that answer, Ning continued to berate me about my use of the key to knock. I said that I just want to pick up my food. Instead of retrieving my order, Ning kept reprimanding me for at least 3 or 4 minutes. During that time, I asked for my food at least 5 times to no avail, until I finally lost my temper. After one more request for my food, I left without it. I have never experienced such an unpleasant exchange in my lifetime, and I am embarrassed for allowing an unpleasant person to push me to utter frustration. All I wanted was my lunch. read more

As a vegetarian, this is the absolute best Chinese option in the whole area. Im always disappointed when I go somewhere and the only options is 5 different fried tofus and veggies. Here, there's an entire selection of the menu that is all vegetarian versions of regular options. I can get veggie versions of chicken, beef and even DUCK! My favorite is the vegetarian duck, I don't know how it compares to the real thing, but I love it and get it every time. read more

Ordered off the lunch menu for delivery along with several other co-workers. They are usually very quick to deliver. I got General Tso's Chicken with Wonton soup which also comes with a spring roll and fried rice. The crunchy noodles looked homemade but they were pretty greasy and smelled and tasted like their oil was old and burnt. The wonton itself (yes, just one in the container of broth) had that typical freezer-burnt taste and the soup came in a smaller container (styrofoam) than other restaurants. They give you a large portion of fried rice and chicken but no broccoli as I'm accustomed to with other Chinese restaurants. It all tasted pretty good. The spring roll was crispy and actually the best part of the meal. This is not my favorite Chinese restaurant in Frederick but it's not the worst, either. read more

The absolute worst Chinese food I have ever had. I ordered the general tso's shrimp.... BIG mistake. The shrimp was fake! It definitely was frozen and came out of a box - yuck. There was a time when we were eating Chinese food once a week (if not more). Since moving to Frederick, that has definitely changed. Partially because of all the yummy Thai and Vietnamese in town but also because we just cannot seem to find a Chinese takeout place that blows us away. I will say that Hunan Gourmet is the current front runner. We opted for a Sunday takeout lunch due mostly to laziness and a craving for egg drop soup. I got the mu shu beef, house fried rice, spring rolls and corn egg drop soup; husband got orange chicken. The egg drop soup was supposed to have corn but I couldn't tell a difference nor did I see any corn. It was fine though. Also, the flavor of the mu shu was a little odd. I could not figure it out. The veggies were perfectly cooked though. I think the best thing was the spring rolls. They were perfect. Everything else was decent though. I'm sure we will give this place a try again but the search is STILL on for our go-to Chinese takeout place. read more

I'd walked by this place a few times and was intrigued since it's an actual restaurant and not a carryout. I ordered shrimp spring rolls and a large combination fried rice to share with the bf. The spring rolls were dripping grease but I'm a fatso so I liked them all the same. The fried rice was excellent. They didn't skimp on the beef and chicken though they weren't quite so generous with the shrimp.
