We recently moved to Encanterra and was looking for a good Chinese Food place. This was the closest to our home so we thought we'd try them first. Our 1st visit, we got: Szechuan Beef, Shrimp w/Mixed Vegetables, and Chicken with Cashew Nut. On our 2nd visit, we tried Mongolian Beef, Seafood Delight and General Tso's Chicken (made with dark meat - yum). We were told that, in general, if the entree has fried chicken, they use dark meat, all other chicken dishes are white meat. We love the thigh meat so this is good to know. We've enjoyed all of the entrees, but our top favorites are Szechuan Beef, Shrimp w/Mixed Veggies (Seafood Delight is also very good) and Chicken w/Cashew Nut. Both times we've called in, it's been about a 40 minute wait so order before you get really hungry! They give plenty of food and it is really piping hot! Food is trash has no flavor I ordered the sesame chicken and it was just fried dough there was no meat! flavorless food.

This is a takeaway restaurant, that is their specialty, that is where it turns, if you want to dine on at their 6 tables be prepared for an experience less than that of a fast food joint. 2 young people working the registers and never mentioned that our in house wait for dinner was going to be an hour. I picked up on it when someone came in and asked how long his order was going to be and the hostess said an hour plus. I should've asked for a refund as it was not the night to be out that long waiting for dinner. Standard Chinese restaurant empty boxes stacked as high as the ceiling for this to go orders. Stacked boxes of fortune cookies up against the wall. Food was served in plastic dishes for those eating in. As I stated this is -00% suited for takeaway, I would not recommend eating in especially on the weekend. It is a small place so not a lot of elbow room. As far as the food the portions were large and tasty, that is why they are so busy for takeaway out. Realizing every Chinese restaurant has their own twist on wonton soup, I would stay far away from the China chef offering. Dumpling was overcooked and water logged. The broth was not clear and had a taste of beef stock or perhaps a super dark soy sauce. We might have to come back try the takeaway experience. read more

Recommended to me for NY Style Chinese food from a neighbor and was not disappointed - ordered chicken lo mien and it was on point. Also got some crispy noodles which were just right not too greasy and perfectly crispy and flavorful - dumped the who bag over my lo mien added some of their house made hot mustard and some duck sauce and proceeded to finish the whole plate - cannot wait to try more off the menu soon . read more

I freaking love this place! They're fast, they're friendly and they're fresh af! Seriously, this crew makes some of the best Chinese in the valley and the portions are massive while they keep their costs fair and reasonable. I would definitely classify China Chef as an east coast Chinese place. Great portion sizes for the money. Even their lunch specials are "splitable". Very decent wor wonton soup- they load you up on the wontons! I have had the general tso's and the beef & broccoli. The general tso's was still crispy when we got home (love that!). Great to-go place stashed in a strip mall. Worth a try!! The major downside is that their quoted pick up times aren't very accurate. If they tell you that your order will be ready in 10 mins, it's more likely 35 mins. Food is very hot and fresh when it's done, so I think they just get backed up easily. Chinese spots are limited out here, so they get busy quick around lunch and dinner time. The restaurant closes around 3 or so every day for an hour to give the staff a much deserved break read more

This is our first time here. We weren't to sure about it, it's squished in between a Froyo and Chiro. What a pleasant surprise! The food was delicious! We had the Lunch Specials : the L19 Low Mein (Soft Noodles) L20 Boneless Spare Ribs and the L28 Beef with Veggies The gal behind the counter was very helpful and friendly and the whole vibe was pretty casual and laid back. Been a year since I last reviewed this place, time for an update. We are very fortunate that we live 5 minutes from here, because we get that delicious food home steaming hot. Very popular, and that's one reason for the rather long wait. Be prepared for 40 minutes, or more, from call in order. We usually get egg Fu Yung, puffy and fresh to the order, beef chop suey, tender tasty beef in a rich sauce full of veggies, and Singapore rice noodles with shrimp. I've never had a shrimp here that was past it's prime! Orders are not skimpy, they pack the containers to overflowing! Prices are reasonable. We've always found service to be courteous and efficient. I am originally from Long Island NY, and it is difficult to get good chinese food, especially in the east valley. China Chef is AMAZING. Their egg rolls are good (not as good and as big as in NY, but... good enough) Their portions are HUGE, like three meals worth of huge for me. Probably the worst kung pao chicken and pork fried rice I've eaten. Had some friends who raved about this place yesterday and I've been in the mood for Chinese food this week, so I thought I'd give them a try. So let's start at ordering the kung pao chicken plate which includes pork fried rice and an egg roll to eat in. I'm told it will take 20 min. 45 min later a covered plastic take out container, a small waxed bag, and a fork are placed in front of me. There was a lot of food in this container, but as I dug in, it was 90% rice, some vegetables and perhaps 2 oz of shedded chicken. The meal had the heat you'd expect, but no real flavor. The fried rice was barely fried and certainly no pork was ever present. The egg roll was ok. I won't be back. I think I need better friends too. read more

If the wait is going to be 35 minutes, that's fine. But when you say it's 35 minutes and it ends up being more than an hour, that's when it's starts to get confusing. Being from the East it has been difficult finding Chinese Food that tastes like what we are used to. Well the hunt is over. China chef delivers. My husband loves chow mien but out here it is called chop suey and mist have been a miss. The Shrimp Chop Suey hit the mark. The taste and flavors were perfect. The veggies were cooked perfectly, with the exception of the broccoli, but that is okay because I like that. The Szechuan shrimp was delicious, a nice cake with heat to it. Served with brown rice, was exactly what I was looking for. The veggie fried rice was terrific as was the pork egg roll. When they give you the timeframe of 30 to 45 minutes it really is 45 minutes. I stopped in on my break to get a quick bite to eat and soon realized there is nothing quick about this place. My order took 30min to come out. The lady working the front seemed irritated by me asking questions about the menu and when I asked if I could get fried rice as a substitute for white rice like I do at every Chinese food place I've ever been she flat out just said no. I ordered the sesame chicken because the picture looked nice and gold and when I got it, it was a pink and red dyed like sweet and sour. Not what I was expecting. The meat didn't taste very good had a turkey flavor to it. The rice flavor was off also. I ordered the lo mein also just plain and it wasn't bad but they do add some red paste to it that adds a hint of spice. I also ordered the fried spring rolls and the greens inside tasted old and the fry oil tasted dirty. One thing they have going for them is portion size! They do give awesome portions but it's too bad I didn't like the taste so I was left with a bunch of leftovers I won't eat. The inside did look clean though so that's a plus but it is also very small inside wouldn't come with a group more than 4. Overall I was disappointed with this restaurant and would not come back there are much better Chinese places than this. read more

We ordered from China Chef for the first time last weekend and were pleasantly surprised. The majority of Chinese restaurants we've tried in Arizona have not been good. Prior to eating here the only two we ever thought were halfway decent were Asian Station and Ginger Zing in Mesa. China Chef was actually better than those two and I would go so far as to say it's the best take out Chinese food we've had in Arizona! And we've tried a LOT of places. People from the Valley come from all over (except the small percentage that actually grew up here) and the Chinese food in the different parts of the U.S. is very different. I'm originally from Chicago and we usually judge Chinese restaurants by how similar their egg foo yung patties and gravy is to the restaurants back in Chicago. This place NAILED it! We also liked their egg rolls and chicken and broccoli. My only minor complaint is that I called in an order at 4:15 on a Saturday and was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. I showed up 20 minutes later and had to wait another 20 minutes for my food! And it wasn't terribly busy. I've never waited 40 minutes for take out food in my life! Not so much as an apology from anyone.
