I grab takeout from here sometimes which has usually been pretty good. Overall I've always been satisfied with everything that I've ordered, at least you always know what you're getting when it comes to this place. Is it the best? No, but is it pretty good? Yes. Prices always seem to be alot higher here though and that's probably just because it's located in Florham Park which is kinda a "hoity-toity" and "high falooting" sorta village Lol. It's biggest claim to fame is that the NY Jets facility is right down the street. No big deal right? Maybe those guys get takeout from here too who knows who cares. I'm sure they can afford it on their NFL salaries. If you ask me that is one overpaid football team right there. This is a local family favorite. Been coming here for years whenever we visit the area. Service is fast and efficient, restaurant has seating for large groups as well as standard booths and tables We are served complimentary hot tea. Came for their weekday lunch special where you get a choice of soup, choice of rice, and a main dish. Lots to choose from. We were a party of 7 so not only did each of us get our own lunch special where, we also ordered the Mapo Tofu and Dan Dan noodles to share. Everything was flavorful and delicious. The reviews here were interesting and quite mixed, so I didn't know what to expect. Some in the party said not to be too hopeful, and others said, maybe it'll be fine. Arriving here for a private party of 13, we were going to have a lot of food, and, well, they delivered. I have no disappointments from their food, at all. It was legitimate and authentic Chinese cuisine. While I often like to order a special rice cake dish at Chinese restaurants, it's traditionally from a certain part of China, so I was fine not having that. Still, we did as most do, and ordered lots of yumminess. We tried traditional American-Chinese food like pork dumplings, scallion pancake (ordered a second order after the first), lo mein (very heavy on the soy sauce), General Tso's chicken (looked decent, people were happy) and Chicken with Black Bean Sauce (looked good, people were happy). We had ample rice of both the white and brown variety to suit people's palates. We also had a traditional Chinese appetizer spread with items that I honestly am not sure what they were - ranging from cold sliced beef to jellyfish (you'd know the array if you'd seen it before). Other dishes that can be praised were double-cooked bacon and an incredibly spicy fish dish that was so spicy, only 2 people were able to tolerate it for more than 3 bites without breaking out into a serious sweat. We also had some pork bao, but the bao part seemed a little too thin for my standards. For celebration, there was also lobster, complete with the head and the eyes staring at you. In addition, there was some veggie Mei fun, some beef pan fried noodles, some ma po tofu that was perfectly seasoned, baby boy choy (we ordered a second dish of this, it was so well cooked and fresh), watercress (we should have ordered a second dish of this, it was also perfectly cooked), and a Chinese veggie dish that was some vegetable in between asparagus and cucumber- delightful and refreshing, and also, perfectly cooked. To me, the goal is to have food that is cooked just right in the simmering pot or fire hot wok. The simmering pot will bring out depth of flavors, like the ma po tofu, and the fire hot wok will perfectly cook greens without making them soggy. My mouth is watering thinking about how good the food was. To wrap it up, they had oranges and fortune cookies, gratis for all to enjoy. I might have missed a dish or two, as we easily ordered over 15 dishes. The staff were quick to help make room for more dishes and to clear out dishes that were finished. The reviews paint a somewhat sad picture, but I would definitely go back here when in the area. Loved the food! Service was on point, helpful, efficient and somewhat amusing. The waiter in charge of our large party pointed out at least twice that there was too much food and questioned our choices to order more... Heh heh heh. When you eat out at a Chinese restaurant with a Lazy Susan, you must fill it past capacity. That is good luck! Parking is easy. The dining area is a good size for plenty of tables. They have an online menu, very avant garde for old school Chinese restaurants. There's a nice fish tank for decoration, but it is missing decorations and things inside other than fish and water... Our group of 11 people (6 adults and 5 kids) went to the restaurant for dinner last week. We ordered 10 dishes including peking duck (about $60) and squirrel Fish (about $30). To our pleasant surprise, both duck and fish were tasty and authentic. We also order Yang-Zhou fried rice. The kids liked the fried rice. The adults in the group did not think the fried rice should include American ham. The roast pork in the fried rice was mostly the end cut with fat ... which was the only negativity of the meal. read more

Went to China Chalet on a Thursday around 12:30 for a business lunch. We had no problem getting seated right away. The staff were friendly and attentive. Overall, the restaurant was very quiet. We ordered off their lunch menu which was very reasonable. I got the wonton soup and chicken and broccoli with fried rice. Both were very good. I would definitely order them again. This is my second visit here and again I was impressed. All of the dishes have great flavor and texture. Nothing is overly oily or too spicy. The flavors are balanced and the ingredients taste fresh. The portion sizes are generous. The staff is friendly and patiently awaiting your arrival. I really enjoy the more formal white table cloth setting with tea and oranges. We had take out for New Years Eve. Wonton Soup was water! Tasteless! And lukewarm! The wontons were so soft, as if they were sitting in this water for days, also tasteless. I had LoMein with shrimp. I envisioned a succulent dish with a few large shrimp. Again, total disappointment! There was so much sauce absorbed into the noodles that they were dark brown. And, Hello! Two slivers of a vegetable? Two pieces of vegetable! Forget the shrimp! A few small pieces of overcooked shrimp tossed in, you had to dig to find them. When we get together with friends, we order from China Chalet and drop $200, and have been doing so for a few years. Last time when it was a disappointment, I let it go, but no more. This restaurant is really a solid 3.5 for me. I was looking for Peking duck in the area and it seemed to be the only one that offered the crepe style (IYKYK) but it's not truly authentic duck preparation style more like the Cantonese roast duck vibes. But to be fair it was still delicious and the server prepares it right in front of you and gives you 6 whole wraps along with 2 duck legs. But don't expect this to be the authentic version you will find in Flushing. We weren't super hungry so we got a vegetable dish which was the stir fry bamboo shoots with wood ear, and my dad's favorite mapo tofu that had a good kick and lots of aromatics (but they call it Ma Bo tofu here) The service was friendly and what you would expect from an old school style Chinese restaurant with the white tablecloth, wait staff in black slacks, vest and white shirts and a fish tank in the front. It did look like they were takeout heavy and even have a kiosk you can order food from by the door! Overall we went home full and happy. We came on a weekday afternoon and all the dishes came out super quick within 5 minutes. Suspect some items were already cooked and were just reheated. What was really good was the sliced chicken with tender asparagus and the beef chow fun. Everything else was very underwhelming. The crispy flounder with black bean sauce was disappointing. Tasted like your regular frozen fish sticks that you get from the supermarket sautéed in black bean sauce. The white rice and brown rice were very hard. Not sure what happened there. I came for lunch to the China Chalet having read some positive reviews. The restaurant has numerous awards, all are displayed on the entrance walls. They pride themselves on their chinese asian cuisine, but I dine here specifically for their szechuan offerings. On this day I had their "Chicken w/ garlic sauce ($12.50 lunch special).. I also had the egg drop soup ($4.50) which was good but not exceptional. The chicken w/garlic sauce was superb and the entire dish was very tasty and well done. The food and prices are comparable to my favorite Chinese restaurant "Hunan Taste" in Denville where I have eaten many times. The food comes out quick, the service is efficient, the host is very friendly and the ambiance is semi-elevated. Management will accomodate alterations to your dish. Additionally, you can request your dish be chinese style. Having travelled extensively in China (Beijing to Hong Kong), I personally would not reccomend that. In China, Peking Duck is served boiled. If you arrive before 12pm you will avoid the crowds that follow. Parking is in a strip mall. read more

We were regulars at Mr Chu (East Hanover) for many years. Now that it seems like they are not going to reopen, we began looking for other Chinese restaurants. We tried several in the area and then tried China Chalet twice with takeout and finally dined inside tonight. Looks like we found our Mr Chu replacement. It's actually a touch better, good quality food and lots of variety, although entree prices a touch higher. Service was prompt and friendly. Tonight just had two basic dishes of steamed chicken with broccoli and a Hunan beef. Hunan Beef was superb with great spice and good quality steak. Can't expect much from steamed, but chicken was tender and perfect. Only 2 complaints. One is that they don't put the crispy noodles on the table. I've never ever been to a Chinese restaurant that doesn't offer that. They don't even have them (we asked) Second, atmosphere isn't very appetizing. Old dirty green carpet. Green booths and they keep a table in the middle of the restaurant with all of the supplies on it like jugs of water, stacks of clean plates and silverware. Strange. But we will be back. read more

I ordered my usual lunch items hot and sour soup, and Dan Dan noodles. These are safe items to order. On a whim I also ordered chicken lettuce wraps. This dish is seriously not good. It's made in American style with a mixture of carrots+peas+corn with chicken bits. Very un-authentic and expensive for the ingredients they used (pretty sure the vegetables were from frozen). The Mapo Tofu was very good, spicy and hearty sauce w silken tofu cubes made perfectly. They are authentic Szechuan spot, note the best is small shredded pepper beef. I do not like their garlic sauce pork, yu xiang rou si. It is on the sweet side. Does not have the sour garlicy taste untraditional. On the other hand the Yuxiang que zi, garlic sauce Eggplant are very delicious. read more

We got take-out from this place yesterday. It was really bad. The vegetable rolls and Shanghai rolls were very greasy and tough to bite into- we couldn't eat them. Fried rice was white rice with a few rubbery pieces of beef and a random green pea- no soy sauce, no taste. General Tso Tofu was a lump of tofu stuck together with raw broccoli underneath. Sesame chicken was served in the same glued-together format- one big lump of chicken. They must use a lot of corn starch and all the dishes congeal and clump together. Even the lo mein was oddly tasteless. The food was very expensive for take out and definitely not worth it. Food was bordering on the inedible. Obviously not going back. There must be a better option- I'll keep trying new places til I find some descent Chinese food but skip this one. read more

I went once about a year ago and couldn't find a reason to go back. After going again, meeting a friend, once again I cannot see any reason to go back. There is nothing on the menu that I've had either before or recently that would prompt me to return like Hunan Wok, a hole in the wall that has great Lo Mein and Pineapple Shrimp as well as great boneless ribs. Or Hunan Spring that has an excellent Crispy Orange Beef. Or how about Cottage II in Morristown that has a fantastic Pan Fried Noodles with Shrimp. I only ordered Won Ton soup to go. I wasn't feeling great and was really look forward to this soup to do some soothing work. What a disappointment. The broth was almost clear, a far cry from the golden yellow it should have been. The won tons, although plentiful, were so mushy they were inedible. I literally could not finish half a bowl.
