Very Yum. Got the lamb hot pot (its dry pot), asked not too spicy for my Mother and it was just right. Lamb is gamey like it's supposed to be but be warned. The garlic veg (baby bok choy) was good but my Mom said it needed soy sauce. Thing is you gotta eat it before you eat anything spicy or you can't taste the delicate flavor. Shredded potatoes was different from the hot and sour version I usually get, its spicier. And the Garlic sauce with pork is spicy and has that kinda smoky sweetness is the best way I can describe it. The best Chinese I've had in awhile. I wish it was closer to where I live we swung over after getting out of Newark airport on our way home. Got take out for dinner in a Friday. It's on the corner of a busy intersection. The small parking lot is convenient but I zoomed passed it at my first drive through. The owner,chef, father is the only worker. 1.5 if you count his son who is very young. The inside will make you want to get your food to-go. The food is legit. The spiciness and numbing peppercorn is throughout the sauces. The food we got was $40 but he could easily charge for more. The food is that good. read more

It's basic, it's pared back and it's definitely not a 'bistro'. This is Sichuan food done hot, oily and tingly-spicy. Be prepared to use Google translate, smiles and hand gestures to communicate with the woman at the counter, and exchange cheeky grins with her son who pops out to say 'hi' while you wait for your order. They DO take credit card, and you can order your food in advance. The online order form is user friendly but not always up to date - they run out of popular dishes very quickly - hence why you might need Google translate when you arrive to pick up your order. The food is fresh, tasty and quick but not suspiciously quick. We had cabbage, spicy chicken and twice cooked pork. Excellent stuff! read more

My kind of place. A hole in the wall off the beaten track. Learned about this place on Yelp. Good thing. I rarely take Schuyler to I 280 and unless you know about the place or are stopped at the light, you would never know it was there. We stopped in recently following our walk at Dekorte in the Meadowlands. We ate in but this is more of a take out place. About three tables and the only heat to be found was in the food and probably by the stove. We love Sichuan food. Spicier the better. You get that here. Owners, husband and wife, handle the orders and cooking. No english is spoken. We pointed at both menus provided and the gentleman headed back to the kitchen and prepared everything to order. Spicy short rib potatoes, cumin lamb and dry fried string beans. The short rib dish and string beans were outstanding! Very flavorful in addition to the mouth numbing heat of Sichuan peppercorns we enjoy. The lamb dish was just ok. Lots of chilies, onions and cumin but the lamb didn't taste like or look like lamb. We've had much better versions of this dish elsewhere. Again, there are two menus here. Be sure to look at both. An excellent first meal here. Looking forward to trying more dishes. read more

Delicious, delicious food for a reasonable price. I've gotten the lamb cumin, Dan Dan noodles, and pork with potatoes and it's all great (the latter two were the better of the bunch). Last time I called a guy who spoke no English answered the phone, so it's probably better to go in person to order if you don't speak whatever language the menu is written in. Careful - if you blink you might miss this place. It was cold afternoon, and my PIC and I wanted something spicy. After checking out Yelp, we found out about Gem Bistro. This is a very small business - cash only. 99% of their business is take out. Walking in, I noticed toys scattered on the floor; they belong to the owners youngest child, who was playing on one of the tables. We were quickly attended to. The menu goes a little astray with too much emphasis on Intestines and Sea Cucumber. Definitely the best Sichuan place in the neighborhood. Authentic taste for a good price. Sitting space is limited and only 3 or 4 cars can park in the front of the restaurant. This place is more for takeout, they have only one or two tables for a max of 6 people I guess. The food is definitely authentic Sichuan, just not spicy enough because I think it's to accommodate the general public(be sure to tell the manager to add extra layer of spicy when you order!). A few weeks ago, it was a cold day. I passed by the gem bistro with my friend and her daughter, followed the yelp, We gave it a try, even the restaurant was very cold. We ordered fish with tofu and string beans, the taste was good ! But everything was down after I took the little girl used their bathroom. We went through the kitchen to get in the little bathroom, the guy was doing his side job, he left the meat anywhere, I found the floor was greasy and really dirty ,I felt the bathroom was colder, like a freezer , and without hot water at all to wash our hands, but these were not a big deal . When we returned to the dine area, we passed the cashier's counter, I found a foul smell came out from the wall behind the soda refrigerator , I totally lost my appetite for the food at that moment. When I sit back to the seat, I really can't eat anymore , even I still very hungry and cold. We decided packed the food and left the restaurant, when I told my friend the reason, she didn't want to eat the food anymore ! I think I will never go back !
