Both Heirloom and Trios are attached to--and share a kitchen with--a Roadhouse Grill, and all of them are owned by the same parent company. However, Heirloom is much smaller, which I suspect makes it easier to control quality. Based on my experiences--one visit here and many visits to Trios over the years--the quality of just about everything is better at Heirloom. My meal consisted of their Smoked Manhattan, the Burrata salad, and the Heirloom Burger. (The burger was so good that they named the restaurant after it!) The Manhattan was one of the best Manhattans I've ever had. It had a wonderfully mellow, balanced flavor that edged toward sweet, despite being made with rye. Maybe it was the aroma--and eventual taste--of the large toasted marshmallow suspended over my glass where the cherry would normally go? I guess, to be sure, I'll have to go back and order another. The Burrata did what all great burratas do: each bite felt like a mouthful of sunshine. The cheese, tomatoes, arugula, and balsamic vinaigrette combined to create pure culinary happiness. They call Heirloom a speakeasy, but it feels more like a small restaurant with an eight-stool bar and a few high-tops. It's intimate compared with the Roadhouse, but not exactly speakeasy-intimate. And, finally, Heirloom is inside Roadhouse. You walk down a hallway, turn left into a very short hallway, open an unmarked door, and then go through a second door marked only by a red rose on the handle. I suspect the obscure entrance is their justification for calling it a speakeasy. But with food and service this good, they can call it whatever they like.

I've passed by and seen this place for the last 15-odd years but this my first try. There's not much ambiance. But the place is clean, well-lit, and there was some smooth jazz coming out of the speakers. There are about 6 tables inside. I ordered the fish sampler platter with mashed potatoes and gravy, and mac and cheese. I also ordered three jumbo chicken wings. The sampler platter came with three breaded and fried fillets. According to the menu, they were whiting, trout and "catfish (swai)". I couldn't definitively tell which was which, but I think the whiting and trout were the thinnest. One of those, perhaps the whiting, had a distinct fishy taste. What I assume to be the swai was thicker and quite mild and tasty. The batter on all three was crispy and had a bit of salt in it. I did find about three pin bones across all the pieces, so be careful. A note on swai: this is an Asian species completely different than any real catfish species. There is an FDA law that says it cannot be labeled as catfish. This is why I believe it's listed the way it is on the menu. Read up on swai and make your own determination. For me, it's tasty, and I'll probably return to Dave's in the future to get an order of just that. The fish came with a small container of tartar sauce. The mac and cheese was average. It's possibly from a box, but still good. The mashed potatoes were smooth and creamy. Also possibly from a box. But, combined with the gravy (probably from a packet mix), it brought back to me fond memories of 1980s elementary school lunches. Those mashed potatoes and gravy were the bestest! (Pizza slices sucked, but pizza boats were great; hamburgers sucked, but Salisbury steak was great.) The jumbo chicken wings were huge! Each one is the uncut whole wing -- tip, flat, and drumette. So an order of three is like ordering six regular "wings". They included a small container of their special mombo sauce, and an even smaller container of hot sauce which was very close in flavor to Crystal hot sauce. The mombo sauce was fine. It was slightly sweet, slightly spicy, but not really mouth-poppingly fantastic. The wings were super crispy and meltingly hot -- so much so that the takeout container was a bit melted and warped in some spots. No one said this was healthy. But was it good? Yeah, it was good. Eat here when your better half (and likely better eater) is out of town. Also, call your order in ahead if you can because it took a good 15 minutes to prepare.
