a menu for a chinese restaurant
Jami P.

I haven't been here for 13 years. I couldn't quite remember why it'd left a bad taste in my mouth I just remembered we had decided we wouldn't be back. (Pun intended) Today with fresh expectations I took my son back for a second try. Knowing I was going to leave a review I started out but taking a picture of the menu. The service was quietly polite. I'm not sure she ever said anything. Since it's a buffet I don't think they expected me to order. Sitting there wondering what to do was an awkward experience. Once the waitress arrived with our water I pointed to L11, the Hunan Chicken on the lunch menu. My son opted for the buffet. He wasn't super impressed but he's 16 and a lil picky, he can write his own review. After a reasonable wait my order was silently dropped off by someone from the kitchen. It was a large portion with plenty of fresh veggies. Very tasty, not spicy. The plate was a bit small for the amount of food which made it challenging to eat. A good problem. The fried rice and egg roll were absent. I wasn't sure if they were on their way or if they'd been forgotten and I didn't know who to ask. About 5 minutes later the cup of rice showed up. It hadn't been fried. It looked like they mixed up the rice and veggies in preparation to fry and skipped the last step. It was fine, the quality of the rest of the meal made up for the rice. Besides, I needed to save room for my eggroll. The egg roll never arrived. Oh well, there was plenty on my plate so I still wasn't too disappointed. The waitress did come back once to refill my son's water and clear his plate. At the end of our meal we were brought a hand written ticket and fortune cookies. The ticket said $18. Hmmm I quickly did the math. $5.50 + 6.89 +8.25%tax is $13 something. Right? We went up to register. The man , without greeting held out hand for money. I asked how much, he said $18. I asked if he could help me understand. Maybe we had the wrong ticket. I told him what we had. He said, yes that's $18. There is a paper menu right where you pay. Thinking maybe it's the language barrier I point to what I ordered and say, I had the Hunan chicken. He says. "Those menus are wrong" then he scratched out the price. "Oh, I understand. Do you have corrected menus?" "Yes, here." Then he shows me another menu with the same prices. Then he scratched out the price and wrote a new one in and said "all our menus are wrong" I told him if they're wrong he should probably throw them away and stop handing them to customers. He took them off the counter. Then I just paid the $18 plus tip. It was in that moment I remembered why we hadn't been in 13 years. This same thing had happened then. Except it was for a family of 5 and it hurt a lot more back then. The thing is, I get why they raised the prices. $8 is a reasonable price for what I recieved. Well, if I'd actually recieved it. I never got that egg roll. I don't like to be deceived. Maybe it's coincidence that it happened twice 13 years apart. Probably not. It's not okay to continue handing out menus with the wrong prices printed. It's misleading. I really wanted to like this place.

Example entrees: Salt and Pepper Shrimp, Gen Tsos Chicken and Pepper Steak.

The soup was hot and tasty. The rest of the food was at room temperature. It was not enjoyable. The service was good. Price fair.

I think this place deserves a solid 3 or 3.5 maybe. Can't say much about the food, the lomein looks…read moreunappealing. The rice looks Mexican rice...I mean if you can turn Jasmine Rice in to a Mexican looking fried rice...kudos to you. But other parts of the meal were fairly doable. The broccoli salad was light and refreshing, the hot mustard made to my liking, strong but just the right amount of intensity, dip some of the peppered fried chicken in there and it was a rather good complimentary pairing. The cabbages sauteed looked fresh, bbq ribs were legit. And although nothing sophisticated with their sushi, the sushi tasted much better than Fujisan refrigerated sushi you'd get at Costco. Hot and sour soup passes my acceptance bar. And they have creme corn and ice cream. So, having driven back and forth on the 54 Highway connecting Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico on one diagonal byway, I instantly knew all these years, this must be some kind of Mule Route where border migrants come in and where drugs can make there way up north. Considering the non-existence of State Troopers and Border Patrol....this is Cartel Heaven. Then dropping in here at this Super Buffet in Nomansland Guymon Oklahoma, it just all confirmed my notion....this is Mexican Sanctuary. The Buffett is packed, Hispanic dialogue fills the atmosphere, the owners were a young couple in their late 40s, Fuzhounese / Fuqingnese Chinese and they ran this entire establishment with Mexican, Guatemalan Kitchen Staff. Impressive...but please....teach the staff to get the lomein and fried rice right. The Fuzhounese Chinese are the equivalent to the Patels of India. They come to America by incurring large sums of debt paid to a Fuzhounese / Fuqingnese human trafficking organizations called snake heads, and the snake heads either get them the Visas to enter into the United States or circumvent entering the US by coming through Mexico; then their first stop is Brooklyn, NY 8th Avenue where they're settled in with a phone and soon they're sent off to some middle of nowhere town in the Heartland of America, working in another Fuzhounese owned restaurant & Buffett until they manage to secure an underground loan to finance their own buffett in another town like this one, Guymon Oklahoma. And so going back to the Patels whom own ever block of motels on America's highways, the Fuzhounese run every Buffett, Sushi you come across in every small town America. I'll end it here with my bantering. This buffett is an ok stop in between Kansas City and Tucumcari New Mexico. Is it great? F*ck no. But will it fuel you up? F*ck yes. Would I recommend? If On highway 54, yes.

At 5:30 pm on a Tuesday, there was only one other table in use which would not be a good sign. But I checked out the buffet and decided to stick it through. By 6:00 pm, there were a few more people here. This was good. More than a dozen hot items on the steam table and they included the usual meat and vegetable and sauce. Some noodles, some rice, some soups. Nothing unusual or overly creative but it was tasty and filling and definitely inexpensive. The woman working the register was also clearing tables and refreshing drinks. More food came out to refill some of the steam table items. The restaurant is clean and the table was cleared immediately after patrons departed. I'd have liked to see more options or even some sushi, but this is the Texas Panhandle not San Francisco. It's good enough. [Review 16177 overall - 354 in Texas - 1683 of 2021.]

Then when we went to check out there was a $3.00 holiday fee. There was no food on the buffet special for a holiday. Need to edit saying that the hot and sour soup was completely different than what they used to make. Some of the food was cold. We used to like this place. Totally disappointed.
