Sometimes it only takes one trip to a place to know you're going to love it. I had a good feeling…read moreabout this place when I first read about it in the newspaper article a few days ago. A friend sent me the link to it on Facebook because she thought I might be interested and she knew that I like to try out new places. Today I was going to the thrift stores over near Plains and Adams so it seemed a perfect time to go check this place out. It was a little tricky to find because I hadn't been north of Amarillo Boulevard much in my time here but I had an idea of where it was and just when I thought I might have passed it without seeing it, I spotted it. As I walked up to the door someone must have seen me approaching and he held the door open for me which was a nice introduction to the place. He instructed me where to go to order my food. They only had one copy of the menu sitting out so the girl who was already looking at it held it out to share. The guy that held the door open for me had already recommended the Chicken and Waffles and I just decided to get that. It came with a drink. It turned out they actually had Big Red on tap. Unfortunately it was not the zero calorie version but I threw caution to the wind and decided even though it was high caffeine and high calories I would just treat myself. It took quite a while for the chicken to be ready. One of the guys later explained it's because they are required to cook it for 22 minutes to ensure that is cooked inside. Well, it was perfect. It smelled wonderful, it looked wonderful, and it tasted even better. If there was a downside it was only that it was so hot that I had to wait for it to cool off enough to not burn my tongue. You get your choice of what kind of chicken you want and I chose drumsticks. Those drumsticks were fat and juicy with a wonderful coating and was some of the best chicken I've ever eaten. I'll be honest, I'm not a big pancake and waffle fan, although I do like the concept of Chicken and Waffles. But their waffle could turn me around completely. Probably the best waffle I ever had. The Chicken and Waffles was $10.99 including the drink, close to $12 with the tax and worth every penny. I took a couple pictures of the menu to post so others could see the kinds of food they serve. It's billed as a soul food place and it is Southern Cooking but it doesn't have all the dishes you sometimes find in other places like sweet potatoes and collard greens. It does have fried okra and I didn't try it but I bet it's delicious. Next time. I've had fried chicken three or four places in Amarillo and been surprised that more places didn't serve it. This place was definitely the best I'd eaten although there was another place that came in a close second. There is actually a small market along with the cafe and it was bustling the whole time I was there. One of the owners, at least I think he was, said they'd only been open 90 days and business had been beyond their greatest expectations. That made me happy because I love to see small businesses and Mom and Pop places succeed. Everything looked clean and I saw them wiping down tables the instant people got up and left them. That was a good sign. And the employees and owners couldn't have been more welcoming. By the time I left they knew my name and I bet they call me by it the next time I go in. The best way to get return customers besides offering awesome food is to make them feel welcomed and valued so they will want to come back . Oh, and I forgot to mention, to pay back the community for giving them such good business the first 90 days they had a free food day last Saturday which I didn't hear about until I saw the newspaper article about it. They invited all their customers and members of the community to come in and eat a complimentary meal to show their appreciation for the neighborhood support. I don't think I've ever heard of a restaurant that did that before. Bravo!

The hash browns clearly tasted fresh--like they were cut that morning, not frozen or from a supplier bag. Everything had amazing flavor and gave me energy for the whole day. The waitress was very sweet and attentive, which made the experience even better. Highly recommend this place--let's support small businesses in America!

Our ribeye was amazing, marinated in spices and cooked to perfection. We chose the two included sides and ours were a loaded baked potato and string beans. Because we shared the 12 Oz steak, we added a side and chose grilled zucchini. All were grilled in real butter, except of course, the potato. And even though our amazing, cheerful server, Joey, assured us real butter in the grilling, the loaded potato's condiments were real sour cream, real bacon bits, chives and for some mysterious reason little butter/looking tubs of dreaded "vegetable" oil. When we mentioned this to Joey, she shared our surprise and immediately offered to replace the whole side, which we declined, simply scraping off the fluffy yellow, heart-damaging, pretend oil. Joey even checked with the chef before we had to ask about dessert options and was happy to report safe choices were all butter coconut cake and vanilla ice cream. We're not trying to be difficult, just healthy. And with servers like Joey, there's hope that people are becoming aware. In any case, with the exceptions mentioned, a good steakhouse like Mesquite Canyon is always a good bet for the health conscious. The restaurant isn't fancy, has a sunny back area for dining away from the darker bar area, and even offers some tasty local beer.

Many vegan options with true vegetables as the vegan "meat replacement" vs a faux meat product…read more(although if you're into that they do offer an impossible option). I had the imposter with breaded mushrooms. Super crispy Cremini mushrooms with great crunch but the rest was kinda meh, romaine and drizzle of sauce and balsamic. At least with the pickled onions there was a little palate tease. Also tried the Al pastor with jackfruit. Opted for this version on a salad and it's a whopping serving size. Hearty serving of jackfruit with plenty of sauce and dressing. Had nice little nibs of some crunch too. Service was super, super nice. I'd call the inside dive-ish. Totally relaxed and chill ambiance. I'll be back to try more items! My one dislike was that I don't care for the balsamic drizzle on either dish... just doesn't pair well with these flavors. Side of pineapple was yummy to balance the heaviness of both dishes.

For lunch during one of my days visiting Amarillo, I tried Yellow City Street Food off Wolflin. Inside, the space is cute. They have yellow chairs, pink walls, and cool artwork scattered throughout. When we ordered, the server was very helpful with recommendations and helped us land on what we ultimately chose. They also have a chef's daily special that rotates every day, and you never really know what he could be cooking up. The day we went, the special was Pad Kee Mao, which my girlfriend ordered with their fried tofu. As for me, I got their tacos. The first was their Hulk with jerk chicken, cotija, pineapple, and more, and the second was their Al Pastor with pork, crema, chile rojo, and more. Both came out looking fantastic and were absolutely crushed by me. One thing I noticed on their menu is their vast selection of vegan options. Most meat options usually have a vegan alternative with a specific replacement for the meat. For the Hulk, it's chickn soy curls, and for the Al Pastor, they use jackfruit. It's super innovative and very welcoming to vegan and vegetarian diners. I really like this approach instead of throwing the same meat substitute on everything. Knowing what works best with each dish can really make or break it. We also ordered a side of their Salt and Pepper Fries to share, which were well cooked, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I enjoyed the pepper seasoning on these quite a bit. To drink, we tried their blueberry pomegranate tea, which was delicious. I really liked my food here and, of all the places I tried in Amarillo, I would say this is definitely one of the best. It's unique without overdoing it, and you'll leave with a good meal in your stomach if you give them a shot. RIYL: Tacos, burgers, or honestly just about anything. They've got it all here.
