I was expecting some different menu options given the restaurant name and its emphasis on "street food", but the options were the same as any other Thai restaurant in town in my opinion. What is different is the decor, which fits in with the whole "come eat here because it'll look good on Instagram" trend (think mason jar glasses) i.e. it's a very cute place (which is not a bad thing at all). As far as food quality, the pad thai was a little too salty for me, but it was fine for the rest of my party. I prefer mine to be on the sweeter side (I got it because my uncle recommended it to me). They were able to make it vegan, which was good, but they labeled the tom kha coconut soup as vegetarian when it has chicken stock in it. All in all, I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but if you're in the area and have never tried Thai food before, why not stop at Chimm? read more

Their Thai food and service are great! My favorites are the Thai Boat Noodle Soup (ultra rich, flavorful broth) and the Khao Soi (chewy egg noodles with super tender chicken in a curry broth). I've also tried the Drunken Noodles, Thai Dumplings and their Thai Iced Coffee and Thai Iced Tea -- all of which I'd get again! Where I was left a little disappointed was the Vietnamese Bun dish. My expectations going in weren't high considering this is mainly a Thai restaurant and I grew up eating authentic Vietnamese food, but I was craving it so what's a girl to do... I liked the pickled daikon and carrots, but the chicken was lacking that strong lemongrass punch you'd expect and the fish sauce was extremely sour and not sweet enough. Another piece of advice I'd give is rather than topping the dish with raw scallions, scallion oil would add to the mix of flavors. Best Thai food - this is two hours from home, but we'll make the trek despite there being several great Thai restaurants near home. After you've had some of these dishes, it's hard to get the dishes anywhere else because they're just never as good. We've had Thai across the U.S. and in several European spots, but this is our favorite. read more

As a response to the coronavirus, Chimm did a bulk drop at Lake Monticello, 20-25 minutes away. A very creative way to bring good, fresh food to a mostly housebound neighborhood, it was a huge hit in our house. The red curry was superb, while the pork belly was a huge hit. The kids loved the pad thai. The dumplings were a little small, but on the whole it was a great meal brought within reach of us, and we were very thankful for it. read more

Came in shortly after they opened and were only customers there. That quickly changed as the place was completely filled before we finished our dinner. The Tom Kha is to die for. Creamy soup with great coconut flavor along with fresh lemongrass and cilantro. Was way too hot to eat when served but after it cooked a bit we finished every drop. I had the red curry stir fry. Very spicy but good flavors. Pork needed better trimming as I had a few pieces of cartilage in my meat. My wife had the massaman curry. Huge amount of chicken in it. Chimm is clean but has a seemingly cold ambiance. We came here for a casual date night dinner, and ordered a few Thai dishes (papaya salad, summer rolls, duck red curry, pad kee mao). Well first off let me say that I don't think Charlottesville needed another thai place! We have six or seven already but this is a nice addition anyway. Really liked all the food we had in particular the tofu laarb? appetizer was fantastic. I've never seen this pork dish served as a vegan dish with tofu. In addition most of their other entrées can be made with just veggies or tofu if you don't want the meat options. Our table ended up with Thai basil stir-fry and the drunken noodles. The veggie stirfry was fantastic and the drunken noodles were very good although I personally felt that the noodles were a bit oily. Flavors were right on and they serve a very nontraditional condiment tray which is very good nonetheless, partially because it's just different. I always like to try a new restaurant and this shopping center doesn't have a Thai place yet so it is a welcome addition. Our waiter was friendly & quick and ordering takes place through an iPad so whenever you are finished you just walk up front & pay, no waiting for a check. This is especially good when dining with small children...the absence of a changing table in the restroom* is not family friendly however and I hope they add these soon so we can come back. The food was above average with the chicken satay & fish cakes getting high marks for flavor & authenticity. The dumplings and drunken noodles were average and the chicken wings and jungle curry were boring** and uninspired. I look forward to trying other items on the menu & hopefully they will keep adding new dishes or running specials once they get settled in. * I did only visit one of the restrooms & am glad that they have a changing table for their guests. **Boring not bland. Had a great "small plate" lunch for two today. Grilled Pork Skewers ($4), Crispy Tofu ($4), and Chicken Laab ($7 for a surprisingly large serving). All were excellent, as was the service. And the "4 Sauces" and special seasonings, presented in small bowls on the side, were awesome. They ranged from mild to very spicy, with super flavor elements. Service sucks. Hostess was rude (not sure if she even talked) and we waited 10 plus minutes and no waiter or waitress ever came. This was our second visit and the the service was atrocious both times. I just saw your response. If that was your manager who took us to our table she needs to be retrained. She didn't smile, didn't say a word to us, and then dumped the menus on the table and turned and walked away. Not very professional, warm, or inviting. I ordered take out and was quite disappointed in the Massaman Curry dish. I am usually given the choice of white or brown rice but they served white. I normally have this dish elsewhere as a soup with thin rice noodles or egg noodles. The Massaman Curry was just ok and the contents within (potatoes, chicken and bean sprouts) was not generous.). Also I ordered Drunken Noodles and Fresh Veggie rolls with shrimp - both were good. I was asked if I wanted utensils and said yes, forks and spoons. I had heard that this restaurant was in the same family as Thai Cuisine & Noodle House on Commonwealth which is amazing (see my review) and as we are living on this side of town now and had to do some shopping at Wegman's we were excited to try it. What a train wreck! I have never been to a Thai restaurant that lists items on the menu and then tells you that there are no modifications to the heat, instead, you can choose either mild or hot, which is not really all that hot. They will offer you chilis to add to your food, and as my wife and I like the food prepared with the chilis we did not think this was a viable option. The GrubHub app is no help, and so we decided to order in person. We waited about ten minutes for someone at the front desk, and finally, an overworked employee who seemed very flustered stated it was Friday night and they were slammed (go figure, on a holiday weekend no less), and that the wait for our takeout would be 60-90 minutes. We opted to wait, and so my wife ordered chicken pad thai hot (not really), I ordered massaman curry (I got red curry instead, also not hot), chicken satay (pretty good) and Tom Yum soup (also good) and we headed to Wegman's as we had an hour and a half to kill, and we were successful. When we came back our food was ready, and when I asked the same employee how long it took he said 45 minutes, so our food was sitting for at least 15 minutes less than what he initially told us, and we didn't want to sit there for 45 minutes. Some advice to the owners - allow different levels of heat, properly staff your restaurant for busy times and properly train your employees, and quote correct take out times so the food doesn't sit and get cold. Also, if you are related to the Thai Cuisine & Noodle House, spend some time in that restaurant, the food is amazing and it is extremely well run. In the meantime, we will make the 15-20 minute drive there for our food with the hope that Chimm will get their act together. read more

We ate here 2 months ago and were totally blown away by the food. We returned on a Sunday and the food was AWFUL!! The Pad Thai was bland and obviously reheated because the noodles were all stuck together. I ordered the BOAT SOUP which, last time was fabulous, this time it was like dish water with overcooked boiled pieces of chicken. Too bad. Easily the best Pho in Cville. Love everything I have had from here and we have tried almost all of the small plates. Portion sizes are good but not so much as to be wasteful. I have been wanting to try Chimm for 6 months (the length of time I have lived in Charlottesville) and I am so sad I didn't try it earlier!! The place is conveniently located at 5th Street Station, right by the Alamo. The place is very cozy and inviting! I would say that it is pretty small, so I can see it getting crowded on weekends so I would be prepared for that. The food was excellent. There seems to be a lack of great Asian food around Cville, but this one hits the spot. I got the Kao Soi and my husband got the Jungle Curry. The kao soi is a MUST. If you like flavor, noodles, and crispy goodness...then get this. It's a curry based broth with egg noodles, topped with various fixings. It was so delicious especially on a cold day. The jungle curry is suppose to be the spiciest of them all. But eh... that's debatable. It's definitely got a kick but it's not that spicy (for reference, i think sriracha is pretty spicy). It was very tasty and full or yummy goodness in it. Also very fitting for a cold day. I can't wait to come back and try this place again!! read more

**UPDATE** I had to return to write an update after my most recent visit to Chimm. I adore a good bowl of Pho, and I hadn't yet tried the Pho at Chimm. I visited during lunch on a weekday, and ordered a bowl of the beef Pho. It came out quickly, and as the steam was wafting out of the bowl, I could already smell the deep herbaceous aroma...a good sign! I dipped my spoon in before adding any of the fixins, and while the broth was remarkably good, it fell a little flat. Still, I thought, probably the best in C'ville. I happily tucked in and began to tear up basil and make my bowl the way I like it. No less than two or three minutes later, my server came out to me with another bowl of pho, saying that the broth in the bowl I received was not up to the Chef's standards and so if I would like, the Chef sent out a new bowl. This was completely unprompted by me, as I had not even had a chance to comment on my original bowl. I happily took the second bowl, and WOW, it was markedly different! Still the spicy and beautiful herbal aroma was present, but the broth had a little more umami and richness. Easily one of the best bowls I've had in my life. It was remarkable to see how much the kitchen was aware of the quality of food, and how dedicated they are to making it the best it can possibly be. This has NEVER happened to me anywhere else, and really made my day and my belly so happy! How soon is too soon to return for more...(asking for a friend...)? read more

I haven't loved a restaurant in this town this much since that one special place I adored (now closed) when I moved here 25 years ago. Chimm's pad Thai, the pad see ew, the Thai noodle bowls, the green curry, the mango sticky rice, all were absolutely to die for. I wasn't crazy about the Vietnamese fresh rolls (the veggies inside were too coarse and fibrous, eating them was too indelicate an experience, and the peanut dipping sauce that came with them was too thin so it was hard to dip, and there was no little tiny spoon accompanying it so as to make saucing it up easier...) but that is seriously such a minor thing I'm unquestioningly giving them five stars. The food here is just plain outstanding. I mean, ridiculously good. If you want to complain how you can't get a table fast enough, or you don't like the hours, or they are big meanies because they are not open on Mondays, or the seats at the tables are too uncomfortable and you don't like the sharp edge on the seat, and you didn't get seated in a booth (and dear god you would not be wrong if you noticed that those seats are indeed the least comfortable restaurant seats ever!) then good, complain away, because that just means there will be a shorter wait for the rest of us. And believe me, there will be plenty of us waiting for seats here because the food is So Damn Good. This restaurant will have a line out the door in no time because the quality is just that high. I eat here at least once a week now. Chimm is my happy place. I can't wait to try everything on the menu. Bonus: The staff are nice and caring, funny, sweet, and you can tell how much they love working there. One of the owners, Pader, goes around checking on everyone to make sure everyone is happy. It's almost like we stored back in time and it's not 2018 wen we're in this place. The positive vibes that pulse through this place are absoLUTEly reflected in the quality and magic of what comes out of that kitchen. And, seriously, just be glad for any grouchy reviewers who say they won't come back, because this divine little restaurant will only be even better if only the happy people who "get it" flock here. Amazing! Heard this was opening as me and a friend are regulars to there first location. This was my first time, and I will for sure be going to this location more often. Our waitress was super nice, and easy going. They have more options at this location too, which I love. I ordered the yellow curry and loved it. Super creamy and has so much flavor. A definite must go if you ever in Charlottesville, VA. Food lover this place is a gem!!! I love their authenticity, and their streetfood idea true to their roots. Great addition to the 5th st station. I tried duck pad thai, the pad thai is exactly like it supposedly done sweet,sour(from the tamarind juice, not a common flavor for those who aren't adventurous or never had tamarind before it might be a tad bit different sourness but if you're adventurous I recommend to try it), and salty. Crushed peanut and the lime juice when you squeezed it on to the crispy duck makes the dishes to die for!!!!, we also pick Kaosoi one of the northern Thai dish, some region in Thai makes this dish more to the influenced of Mosleem community, yellow curry color with some condiments of raw shallot, pickled mustard green and the pepper. It comes with dark meat chicken again best meal so far. Next visit, me and my husband tried their specials: garlic shrimp and pork belly with Chinese broccoli simple stir fried dish but boy of boy the chef just know the way to my food lover heart. Lights were off, dark, and we called to make sure it is open. No dinning inside but we can sit outside and order via their online menu. Such a weird and confused place. We went inside to use the bathroom, it appeared the bomb went off inside the place. It looked unprofessional, boxes, items, etc were laying everywhere. The food is not worthy of selling to the public. Also, price was high. An embarrassment to the Thai culture! Trying to do too many dishes from Southeast Asian. Just stick to what you are good at and not driven by greed and profit. read more
