I was disappointed they were out of stock (at only 5pm) on my top dishes: pork belly and duck basil stir fry so we ordered drunken noodles with pork and ginger stir fry with chicken. The food was kind of bland- lacked some spice and seasoning. Of the two, the drunken noodles was the better dish. The texture was perfect and there was a perfect amount of sauce! My tip would be to make it a little spicy (as the menu advertises). The ginger stir fry was in definite need of work- probably wouldn't order that again. When I found out that Thai Cuisine had a new sister restaurant in Cville, I was stoked to check it out. It did not disappoint! From the moment we walked in the door, service was impeccable! Our hostess was personable and friendly and our server was AWESOME. He was funny, attentive and great at anticipating everything we needed. The shrimp fresh rolls were super fresh and that peanut sauce was everything. I opted for pho while my mate had the drunken noodle with chicken. WOW to both! The pho broth was perfect. It was aromatic right away, which gave me a sigh of relief. I'm always a little nervous about pho broth when I try a new place. The broth was complex without being overly heavy or greasy. The meat was perfect and tender. They bring out a spice tray and sriracha upon request, so you can customize your heat level. (Hotttt for me!) Our server even asked if I needed extra basil, jalapenos or sprouts! Bonus points for the thoughtfulness. The drunken noodles were so full of flavor and cooked perfectly. Man this place is really lucky they have the location they do because we've tried 4 times, and this is the nastiest Thai place I've been to. None of the traditional dishes taste anything like you'd expect them to. Our bar for Thai is low, and we'll pretty much eat anything, but we won't be back. I had another great dining experience at Chimm today. Since they opened, I've been there five or six times and look forward to many more visits! The service has always been excellent. Today I was on my own so sat at the bar where service was attentive as ever. I had a Thai iced tea with coconut milk, the tom kha soup with extra veggies, and the laab with fresh tofu. All of it was delicious and very spicy, as ordered. I appreciated being asked if I wanted fish sauce in the laab. On previous visits I've had the panang curry with tofu, the chili stir fry with veggies, the crispy fried tofu, and the spring rolls with tofu, and all the dishes were fantastic. Meat eating friends have loved the jungle curry. Finally, be sure to try the sauces. They are nuanced and add even more flavor to the food. Two stars, I've definitely had better Thai (including in Charlottesville). We ordered Cashew Stir-Fry (a staff favorite), Thai Fried Rice, and Drunken Noodle (another staff favorite) as takeout. All of these were pretty oily. The Drunken Noodles were incredibly spicy. I have an okay tolerance for spice, but this felt over the top. The fried rice was bland and the rice was very soft (which could go back to the oil issue and it was just oversaturated). We finished the Cashew Stir-Fry and the Drunken Noodles, but the Thai Fried Rice found its way to the trash. There was a lot of food, which is a plus in my mind and we had enough leftover for lunches (excluding the trashed rice). The staff was friendly. Really a great first experience at Chimm! Came in with a few friends for dinner last week and were seated immediately. The staff was super friendly and accommodating, and the decor is so nice. I really loved the way the decorated the place; the atmosphere also also great because of this. I ordered a Thai tea to start off and it was absolutely delicious. My friend thought the tea was a bit too strong for her but I personally love a stronger flavor to my tea. The food itself was also good! I got a pho, and it was solidly decent. *takeout review* Last night I tried Chimm for the first time. I called for takeout and the lovely woman on the phone was SO HELPFUL. I ordered myself a vegan drunken noodle dish and for my roomie, a red curry w/ tofu. She immediately said "oh just so you know, the curry has chicken broth." (My roommate isn't vegan or vegetarian so it was no big deal but I was so grateful for a) her knowledge of ingredients and b) the fact that she even cared to inform me without my asking specifically). That alone was enough to make Chimm my go-to. They have an entire VEGAN MENU online. That's a huge relief and makes ordering easy. My drunken noodles were great and I can't wait to try other things. My only complaint is the price. (Everything is like $12-13) but the portions are large so it's worth it I suppose. (I'm just cheap) read more

Finally got to try out this new Thai place beside Wegman's. Service and decor were on point. Menu is extensive and prices are reasonable. I love that they have local ciders and beers in their beverage menu- the Potter hibiscus cider was very delicious. Food is definitely on the greasier side compared to other Thai restaurants around. First off, the chili sauces they have at each table are fantastic! Love the sweet spicy green one. Unfortunately that's all you have for adjusting spiciness of food. The chefs don't make dishes with varying levels of spiciness according to customer preference. Chicken pad Thai was good it just doesn't taste as good when we mix in the chili sauce, we just don't get it quite right, which is why having the kitchen adjust level of spiciness would have been so great. Vegetable rolls were great- very fresh but definitely smaller than what you'd get at other Thai places. I loved the mint they put in it but I thought there was too much rice vermicelli. The Bah Mee Haeng was so good but so greasy! The pork was crispy and well salted and the broth was perfect. Noodles were too soft for my taste. Still enjoyed the dish though! Overall, not a bad place to enjoy Thai food, but it's not outstanding compared to all the Thai places in Cville. read more

Over this past weekend Chimm organized bulk deliveries to various C'ville neighbourhoods and I hope they continue to do so in the weeks ahead. This is officially my go to place for southeast Asian food! I come from Singapore and just shifted down from Michigan, where I had a malaysian restaurant 45 mins drive away to satisfy my craving. The ambience is lovely. And oh the smell when I stepped in. We spoke to the owner as we left and he said we are a "Thai-Irish" couple! He was very patient and chatty. His wife is from thailand and her brother a retired ortho surgeon own the restaurant together. Let's speak about food! We first started off with Thai iced tea. It was awesome with half and half. Just the right amount of sweetness etc. We ordered fish cakes on my insistence next. Husband isn't a big fan. Both of us loved it up. It had lots of fish to it but no fishy/ raw smell. It had lemongrass added to it! Flavorful! Next we had some pork and crab dumpling! These were like pork and crab wontons or like shumai. Except it was stuffed with so much of meat. What a lovely start to our meal. My husband and I aren't big eaters so ordered one entree. The shrimp Bahn Mee. It was so so so good. My husband likes his Mee dry and I love mine soaked in broth. We had the best of both worlds. The chilli from the four spices spiced it up well for me! Broth was flavorful with cilantro and dried onion. The Mee was fresh. Wonton strips were crispy. The shrimp was super duper fresh and well cooked. Overall this was my favorite dish! Finally, the best way to end any meal. Dessert! An order of mango sticky rice of course at a Thai restaurant. It was melt-in-your-mouth so good. The mango was a little sour but I think that's just luck of the draw and they had drizzled the coconut condensed milk, I think, on it. The rice was perfect. We had an elderly gentleman as our waiter. He was very polite, genuine and recommend to us some dishes! The dishes were served quick and in a lovely presentation. They were efficient in cleaning up and asking if we needed anything else. The place was really neat and clean. Menu was extensive. Yelp I think has the older menu which had lesser dishes. I didn't take pics of the menu as I just wanted to dig in. Prices were very reasonable. My husband and I paid $38(not including tip) for all the dishes we had. Sorry, too busy for 2 Around 6:45 on Saturday evening, my spouse and I attempted to eat at Chimm. We read the sign outside stating that there was only limited seating available and to wait to be seated. A small group of people were in front of us. When a staff member came to the door the folks ahead of us told the her they had a party of 6. The staff member looked into the dining room and told them she would get a table set for them. As she started to turn away, my spouse (thinking she thought we were part of the group of 6) asked if she could accommodate a table for two. The staff member let him know that it was a busy night so no tables for 2 would be available. No suggestion that we could wait and they might be able to seat us later. Which we would have been willing to do. No suggestion that we could order food to go. We got takeout from Chimm's tonight and have sort of a mixed review. The chicken wings were pretty tasty, we put them in the air fryer to crisp them up even more. My boyfriend got the Vietnamese bun bowl with beef and it was a disaster LOL. The beef was extremely dry, and there wasn't much of it. The rest of the bowl was basically just an entire head of lettuce with a tiny bit of vermicelli noodles. I had beef pho which was very good except I got the uncooked noodles.... Which was really my bad since we are in a camper and I couldn't get the broth super hot.... So I never got it to cook. There was also a super inproportional amount of ingredients. Good enough food, but how do you feel when they raise ALL the prices? We used to get 2 appetizers (dumpling and wings) and 2 entrees for three people for about $36 - standard. Now its $52 because everything we purchase has a 30-50% increase in price! $17 is too much for half duck (and ive eaten half duck from Vegas to DC, thats too much) where as it used to be $13 which is standard. Probably one of the best spots to get an asian food fix! Got the kao soi and pork belly with chinese broccoli and both were amazing. I preferred the chinese the broccoli but I'm really a sucker for strong garlic flavors and this particular dish did not leave you hanging. The kao soi broth was on point - very savory and flavorful with an appropriate amount of spice. Lots of chicken too! I've been here twice since the place has opened. The place is pretty decent and is a welcome addition to the 5th street center. If anything stands out to me, it's the roast duck that comes with a few of their dishes. They also have a few rotating menu items/specials which adds some additional variety to the menu. Writing this review mostly so people know this place just opened. New Thai restaurant opened by the same folks that own the Thai Cuisine and Noodle House up near Stonefield. Apparently its a different chef though, so the food is different. Stumbled in here randomly on their opening day, so of course some kinks to work out but nothing major. Staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was great. I wish I could remember the names of some of the dishes, there was a curry/chicken/noodle dish that was awesome, and the drunken noodle was great as well. They have not expanded to their full menu yet, which will include some Vietnamese food (pho, banh mi) in the future. Very happy to have this place open and will probably be a regular. We have found a spot for our comfort food in C'ville. My daughter and I have been back twice in the restaurant and gotten take out for a third time and Chimm never disappoints. What stands out to me so much is the depth of flavors in the broths of the dishes we have tried. The Pho with chicken really tastes like that broth has been cooking to perfection for hours! The chicken was shredding perfectly and wasn't over cooked and the garnish plate adds all the right pop when mixed in. My daughter likes the Kao Soi which packs a punch but again, the broth is so rich and full of flavor that it's exceptional. The atmosphere at Chimm is tidy and minimalist but feels relaxing and comfortable. It is for sure one of our fave low key spots! read more

This is my favorite restaurant in the Charlottesville area. I live rather close -- on the south end of town -- and so the 5th Street Station location was always convenient for me. Plus their location right next to the Alamo Drafthouse has made it easy to grab a bite before or after a movie. But what keeps me coming back is the food. The SE Asian street food approach is a great approach in this town, which already has other good Thai restaurants. I love that they experiment regularly with dishes that don't make it onto most other places' more conservative menus. The kao soi is excellent as is the bah mee haeng, and the fresh rolls are always a favorite. They recently had an excellent soop naw mai special -- Isan Thai style bamboo shoot salad with impeccably cooked chicken wings -- and I hope that makes it onto the regular menu. Oh, and they haven't done it in a few months to my knowledge but their banh mis are solid (though you have to preorder as they sell out fast). Basically, they like to experiment and introduce dishes to Charlottesville that you can't get anywhere else here, PLUS they do it well. Their Thai food and service are great! My favorites are the Thai Boat Noodle Soup (ultra rich, flavorful broth) and the Khao Soi (chewy egg noodles with super tender chicken in a curry broth). I've also tried the Drunken Noodles, Thai Dumplings and their Thai Iced Coffee and Thai Iced Tea -- all of which I'd get again! Where I was left a little disappointed was the Vietnamese Bun dish. My expectations going in weren't high considering this is mainly a Thai restaurant and I grew up eating authentic Vietnamese food, but I was craving it so what's a girl to do... I liked the pickled daikon and carrots, but the chicken was lacking that strong lemongrass punch you'd expect and the fish sauce was extremely sour and not sweet enough. Another piece of advice I'd give is rather than topping the dish with raw scallions, scallion oil would add to the mix of flavors.
