I ordered the salmon bahn mi and substituted the salmon for chicken which resulted in me receiving a half piece of chicken cutlet which didn't even fill the bun. And on top of that, the price of the sandwich was the same for the chicken as it would have been for the salmon. I guess on Martha's Vineyard, the price of chicken is the same as the price of salmon. Cute general store! We stopped in to pick up lunch on the way to Larsen's because I don't eat lobster. The store has a good selection of groceries but I was there for the prepared foods. Lots of choices for salads, sandwiches and ready to heat meals. I opted for the Greek salad and a slice of veggie pizza. I was a little disappointed to find out the veggies on the pizza were just tomatoes, so basically a Margherita pizza with pesto. The salad was fresh and had a good dressing on the side but I thought the pizza was only ok. Still a great grab and go option. read more

I'm an amateur pizza chef from Connecticut who has owned a home in Chilmark with my wife for over 22 years now and the Pizza at the general store is some of the best on the island. The normal special is more of a New Haven Connecticut style Apizza but the Margherita Napolitano style is true to form with a fluffy crust and thick dough. Only reason I'm dropping a star is based on the up-charge in price for "fresh mooz" when a true Margherita pizza STARTS with fresh buffalo mooz, not shredded. $50 out the door is crazy expensive for a pizza but we have two choices up island, Chilmark General Store or make it yourself. Definitely a good tasting pizza made on time and ready for pick up after internet order. read more

Great pizza is back! I was disappointed the last couple of years in their pizza, but hope springs eternal and this year my hope was answered! Excellent crust: firm, a little chew, and nice char. I am writing this as a long time resident on Martha's Vineyard. I have had the pizza at Chilmark Store for at least 20 plus years and I used to work for the town of Chilmark as a lifeguard, in my younger years. I have had many a sandwich and many a wait on the front porch in one of the million rocking chairs. I tried to call in an order for a chicken parm sandwich - "sorry, we can only do online or if you want you could provide your credit card over the phone?" "No, I would like to pay in cash, but also I don't have time to wait." So, behest to my need to not wait... I am waiting for a less than par $18.01 chicken Parmesan sub. So, now subs are $18...... when did this happen? This sandwich has gotta be huge, I said the girl and she assured me it "was a pretty big sandwich" - does that picture look like a sub? OK. Forty years in town and our family has patronized the store each summer. No more. Last night we ordered two large Vegetarian pizzas, online as required. The suggested tip (for takeout!) was $16. We gave a more reasonable gratuity. When we clicked to finalize the transaction, we were charged $9. additionally as a "courtesy charge". Long story short 100 bucks for 2 pizzas! I was pretty disappointed with my experience at the store. I ordered a miso chicken salad and was surprised to learn they were all pre made. That alone isn't a huge deal. Unfortunately, I paid $15 for a salad that barely had any chicken and a little dressing container. When I asked to get more dressing, I was told it would cost me another $2.50. I personally don't think stores should be making large profits of an extra container of dressing. All in all, the subpar quality food didn't justify the pricing. This store has everything for everyone. A general store with traditional counter service and a take out counter for pizza, salads and sandwiches with a general store. Gluten-free 10' pizza crust as well. It was well stocked with chairs out side and picnic tables around the corner. While I didn't eat here I would recommend stopping for a quick bite if your in the area and need something to satisfy you. The food looked amazing. They used to have delicious pizza with more choices and loaded with toppings. Went yesterday and were beyond disappointed. Ordered 2 small pizzas, one with vegan crust. Both crusts were undercooked and toppings were so skimpy. Barely any red sauce and nary any basil on the Margarita. The Salsiccia had little red sauce and cheese. I asked for it without the red peppers and they ignored the request. If we'd open the boxes before taking them home we would have sent them back. Over $50 with tip was outrageous for the quality we got. Sadly, never again after many years of making the lovely journey from down island to Chilmark. read more

A store to relax A great place located near Beetlebung Corner. Can't ask for a better name than that. It's just a little store with the usual coffee, ice cream, and other grocery type things. Of course it's expensive because after all it is on the Vineyard. Two things about this place stand out. First the location. It is conveniently place so when you bike out to Gay Head you can stop there for breakfast and then stop again for lunch on the way back. You can take a break , sit outside and watch the world go by. The second great thing is the pizza. They have superb pizza with a zillion different toppings. All kinds of veggies including egg plant, mushrooms, broccoli, pineapple and even goat cheese if you have a masochistic streak. You can get just about every combination imaginable. Best vegetarian pizza in the known universe. When I vacationed on the Vineyard, I had to have a slice a day. Whole wheat crust, and a variety kinds of vegetables, and not too much cheese. How they manage to pack everything you need into this tiny store is incredible. Fresh food here is great, service is great, grocery/vacation items selection is great. It's kind of a quaint place to hang out as well. given that they are really the only game in town, they don't have to be awesome to make a living, but they really do a fantastic job. Both a general store and a deli that sells pizza. They sell cold sandwiches that are already prepared too. We had practically no breakfast so we decided to split a sandwich at 11am knowing we'd be eating again on the other side of the island. I chose the chicken bahn mi. Honestly I didn't read the description but we've eaten so many that we feel we are pretty well versed with them. Most interesting adaptation of a bahn mi but I ate it before taking pictures. Surprised at the poor quality of the pizza. Margherita With basil leaves on top that must've been placed on way too early in the cooking process instead of at the very end. When people try to convince others that Martha's Vineyard is not just an island version of Cape Cod, this is one of the things that comes to mind. Cape Cod has a few markets like this, but the caliber of this little market blows them away. It's like someone went to a bodega in NYC, brought all the best specialty and locally made items to stock the shelves with, threw in a bistro style pizza counter (the vegetarian one was delicious) and some organic coffee and gave it a proper New England porch to enjoy it all on. Yes, the prices are outrageous, but if you're one of the New Yorkers visiting, you probably won't notice much difference. Even the Cape Codders have suffered from these same overpriced markets, but in our case most of them have Uncle Ben's and Folgers on the shelves at those high prices. Whether you're there for the summer or just for a day, this place is a great stop on your itinerary to Menemsha or Aquinnah. read more

The scene on the porch, with tow-headed rich kids from the Community Center day camp running wild and Alan Dershowitz holding court, harries the ordinary shopper, and the lines for pizza (pretty good -- not world-class) can get intense. The grocery selection is adequate but limited; best to call ahead if you're in doubt. Sub-par produce. I love the Vineyard for its low-key charms. Up-Islanders who prefer a higher wattage find this place more to their liking. read more
