    a pre made sandwich

Over $17 for a pre made sandwich and this is what you get. Place used to be good now it's just overpriced.

    $18.01.... For?
    Jane C.

I am writing this as a long time resident on Martha's Vineyard. I have had the pizza at Chilmark Store for at least 20 plus years and I used to work for the town of Chilmark as a lifeguard, in my younger years. I have had many a sandwich and many a wait on the front porch in one of the million rocking chairs. I tried to call in an order for a chicken parm sandwich - "sorry, we can only do online or if you want you could provide your credit card over the phone?" "No, I would like to pay in cash, but also I don't have time to wait." So, behest to my need to not wait... I am waiting for a less than par $18.01 chicken Parmesan sub. So, now subs are $18...... when did this happen? This sandwich has gotta be huge, I said the girl and she assured me it "was a pretty big sandwich" - does that picture look like a sub? I think not with ciabatta bread, with no other option? So I paid $18 for.......? Already, will never come back - attitude of the person on phone line and the laughter after I looked at the price tag, trying to figure out why it was so expensive- ALL SET- NEVER TO COME BACK! NOPE

Best pizza from a roadside deli, perfect spot on my way to Menemsha, when I am not crazy seafood from the dock.

There were two staff members and Stanley Larsen, owner of Menemsha Fish Market, taking orders when our group walked in. Everyone was very friendly. I ordered a cup of the New England Clam Chowder ($6.25), Crab Cake Sandwich ($13.55), a hot stuffed quahog ($5.75), and a coke ($2.00). On the counter, there were samples of the New England Clam Chowder and Lobster Bisque. They were both very good. The New England Clam Chowder was creamy like how I liked it and it had a good amount of potatoes and clams. I really enjoyed the Crab Cake Sandwich and stuffed quahog. The Crab Cake was stuffed and a good size. The quahog was buttery and had a good amount of stuffing. There are a few tables next to the fish market to enjoy your food. Later on, the owner shared his story of catching a great white shark in 1983 while swordfishing and showed us its jaws. If you are in the fishing village of Menemsha or Menemsha public beach, make sure you stop by Menemsha Fish Market. Restrooms are located adjacent to the parking lot in front of Menemsha Fish Market.

There is a lot of produce here that doesn't exist anywhere else on the island. But the markup on their products makes the bulk of what they sell inaccessible to the average person. It's beyond the classic healthfood store pricing, we're talking $20 for a jar of almond butter when Vineyard Grocer (under five minutes away) sells the same thing for much less. I mean, it seems counterintuitive to be focused on eco-friendliness and then to price out the majority so only some can afford it, right? Like, if you want people buying non-organic/fair trade/etc, why make it so most of them can't do it at your store? The counter argument I usually hear is that you get a discount via the Island Club Card, but that's going away soon and it's like $90. So it's still a problem. Sometimes you'll need to go here to buy something you want and in all honesty if you're visiting the island it's worth checking out. But always look at the price tag before you buy anything, you never know when something that should be $7 is $30.

The store isn't even that well stocked or clean. I literally saw a pint of cherry tomatoes for $10. The yogurt I buy is $1.25 at Wegman's and $2.49 at Cronig's. Soda that's often 4 two liters for $5 in Boston is $3.99 each. I walked out with some drinks and snacks for the beach and it was $100. Checkout people are nice. It's sad because I would love to support local businesses and I'm not a Stop and Shop fan but it's better than this.

There are a few other places to get prepared food on the island but if you want milk, soap, potato chips or toilet paper this is the place to go. The only place to go. As expected, it's small, dark and not very organized. Stuff everywhere, and one back room in particular looks like a bomb went off in it. But if you dig around you can usually find what you want or at least what you need to survive another day on the island. They also have a little deli. Nothing elaborate, just basic sandwiches and some fruit and veggies. Just enough to keep you going. You can take the sandwiches outside and eat them on a small, uncomfortable bench. Usually with several large, stinky but very friendly dogs watching hopefully. Bare minimum accommodations. The store will usually have some junk food like donuts and chips and usually have some type of ice cream but it all depends. Health and beauty aids are pretty much suntan lotion, bug spray and aspirin. The market is so small you can't walk in with a large list. You frequently have to improvise and work around what they have. Not much of a store, probably looks and operates just like it did decades ago. About all you can expect on a small, desolate island like Cuttyhunk. Enough to keep you going.
