Sometimes all you need to turn a long week around is a really good ice cream sundae. That's exactly…read morewhere I found myself on a Friday evening in late July. I was in Hummelstown with no real plans, a loudly growling stomach and one very specific craving...ice cream. I'd probably driven past King Kone a hundred times over the years without ever stopping. For whatever reason, this was finally the night. I pulled into the parking lot around 7:30 p.m. and was pleasantly surprised to find plenty of parking, even on a beautiful summer evening. There were lots of people enjoying ice cream, but almost no line inside, which my stomach appreciated immensely. I quickly realized a cone or a bowl wasn't going to cut it. This needed to be a sundae. One of the things I love about King Kone is that many of their sundaes have fun jungle-themed names. After spending a few minutes studying the menu, I settled on the Elephant's Delight, which came to about $10.50. When I placed my order, I looked at the gentleman behind the counter and said, "It's been a long week. Can you take a couple extra minutes and put some good vibes into that sundae for me?" Without missing a beat, he smiled and said..."Absolutely." A few minutes later, he made eye contact across the room and handed me what can only be described as a bowl of ice cream the size of my head. I completely lost my composure. Right there, in the middle of a busy ice cream shop, I audibly squealed and told him, "You are making my dreams come true right now!" I wasn't exaggerating! And I think every person inside King Kone Creamery that night was aware of my excitement. Absolutely no regrets! The sundae was absolutely enormous, piled high with whipped cream, crowned with a perfect cherry and loaded with enough peanut buttery goodness to make my approximately 63.8% peanut butter personality feel completely understood. I carried my masterpiece outside and found a picnic table overlooking the beautiful property behind the shop. It was the perfect place to slow down, enjoy the evening and devote the next half hour of my life entirely to that sundae. The ice cream was fantastic. The toppings were incredibly generous, and I especially appreciated that everything was served in a large bowl instead of a tiny cup that would've had me wearing half of it before I finished. Every bite felt like the reward for surviving a very long week. King Kone turned out to be one of those places that's been hiding in plain sight all these years. Great ice cream, friendly people, generous portions and exactly the kind of place you hope an old-school neighborhood ice cream stand will be. Needless to say, it won't take me another hundred drive-bys before I stop again!

The atmosphere was fun, utilizing retired ride vehicles as booths and playing into the park setting. As expected in Hershey, the menu explored how chocolate can be integrated into a very American menu. I enjoyed the pulled pork grilled cheese: the chocolate barbecue sauce reminded me of a lighter molasses-based sauce so it worked with the barbecue. We had the Ferris Wheel appetizer which was mostly a win, but the items could have shown up on a TGI Friday's menu. The next day, to escape the millions of middle schoolers in the park (I have a whole travelogue brewing for that) we came back because I wanted one of their gigantic milkshakes. The Reese's peanut butter shake was peanut butter to the Nth degree, and it was topped by an entire slice of peanut butter pie. My friend got a stomachache but I love anything peanut butter so this was a win for me. Both times the service was really good. Our servers were friendly and attentive so we never felt we were being ignored or passed over. A+ in the service department.

It's a really cute concept and the food was decent especially after a long day of walking all over the park and eating other junk. We just wanted something filling and satisfying. I want to say we enjoyed the fries the best, but the nachos were pretty impressive. My friends and I ended up ordering burgers and shared chocolate infused pork nachos, which was the only thing I took a picture of. Service was good but it was late at night and there was not a lot of people in the restaurant. The manager was pretty active in helping the servers which was nice and apparent. I'm glad we came here for dinner, and it was part of our Hershey Park experience but I would not come back just to eat here for any reason. It had more of a diner feel than restaurant, but then it is at an amusement park and could be worse. I did enjoy the cocktails there. I did not mind those being infused with peanut butter and chocolate. Would not recommend bringing anyone who has a nut allergy here. :)

Only in my version, there was a little less whimsy and a whole lot more commercialism! But make no mistake, the magic was still there, and my inner child was absolutely enchanted. Imagine stepping into a ginormous, brightly colored chocolate wonderland, almost like a warehouse sprinkled with a little Wonka magic. Everywhere I turned, Hershey's chocolates and candies were beautifully displayed, tempting me like edible treasures waiting to be discovered. And yes, nearly everything was for sale! It was as though someone had unlocked the gates to a chocolate kingdom and handed me a shopping basket. But this magical kingdom offers more than mountains of chocolate. You can create your very own personalized chocolate bar, watch a film about the legendary Mr. Hershey in a theater, or simply relax at one of the many tables toward the back while enjoying snacks, sodas, and even adult beverages. And tucked away upstairs is an indoor amusement ride that takes you on a journey through the chocolate-making process. I know, I know. A ride about making chocolate sounds about as exciting as watching fudge harden, but trust me, the kids will find it delightful, while adults will appreciate the fascinating history and craftsmanship behind every sweet bite. I was fortunate enough to visit for a private event, which included dinner. Our meal featured lasagna and braised beef drizzled with a chocolate-infused sauce. Now, I appreciate culinary creativity, but let's just say the savory dishes didn't exactly cast a spell on my taste buds. The desserts, however? Sweet mother of cocoa, THAT was where the real magic happened! It was a chocolate lover's paradise, a decadent smorgasbord that would have made even Willy Wonka shed a tear of joy. Imagine fountains of silky, melted chocolate waiting to embrace fresh strawberries, fruit, pretzels, marshmallows, and just about anything else you could dream of dipping. There were chocolate chip cookies, rich brownies, luscious chocolate cakes, and an assortment of chocolate-inspired creations and pairings that seemed to stretch into eternity. It was a glorious, unapologetic celebration of cocoa in all its heavenly forms. If chocolate is your weakness, consider this your delicious downfall. Hershey's Chocolate World sits alongside Hersheypark, and here's something I didn't realize until my visit: Hersheypark is no ordinary amusement park! We're talking a full-fledged theme park that gives places like Six Flags a run for their money, complete with thrilling roller coasters and attractions for both the young and the young at heart. Unfortunately, I didn't have an opportunity to venture into the park, but discovering what it offered made me wish I'd had another day to explore. Next time, I plan to unleash my inner child on those roller coasters, wander through the attractions, and then finish the day exactly where any proper chocolate adventure should end: back inside Hershey's Chocolate World, surrounded by the irresistible aroma of cocoa and the sweet temptation of one more treat. After all, some childhood fantasies aren't meant to be outgrown. They're meant to be dipped in chocolate!
