Indian style Chinese food at the NE corner of Rupert and Kingsway. This place has been around for decades. Parking is available but limited in the tiny lot in front, as well as on Rupert and the side streets. The interior is pretty dated. Looks like someone's dining room. Staff are friendly. Masala spicy prawns - delicious. Served with shrimp chips. Chicken with curry sauce - definitely more Chinese style than Indian. Chili garlic lamb - lots of sauce and onions. Once again, more Chinese style than Indian. Friends and I made good use of the roti that we also ordered. In terms of spiciness, the food had a somewhat mild amount of heat, even with the "spiciest" option. We ended up ordering a dish cut green chilis at additional cost. I guess the only complaint is that the dishes are a bit small. I could've sworn the portion sizes were bigger a few years back. In any case, all of us left hungry. Knock 1 star off. Personally I like the food here more than Green Lettuce (another Indian Chinese place farther W on Kingsway). But can't go wrong with either to be honest. This style of food is rather unique in this part of the world, so it's definitely worth checking out. read more

We came here with my cousins and it was delicious! We started with the Vegetable Corn Soup and it was the best I have ever had. I think I could have eaten the whole bowl all by myself. I had visions of corn dancing in my dreams last night (in a good way!). The spring rolls are great but you could skip and leave room for the noodles and other items. Don't forget to order the Manchurian Balls - such a unique flavour. We also order the Sweet and Sour Vegetables and the Chicken in a sweet and sour sauce. Both were similar and it was because we were supposed to order the chicken with honey and garlic (next time). But maybe you can order it when you go! We made a mistake and didn't order the rice which would go great with the saucey-ness of the dishes. Instead we got the Hakka noodles. Get those and the rice and then you have leftovers! The service was fast and friendly! And there is street parking... if you can find it. It's a little crowded but it's authentic and good food! Can't ask for more. Going back for seconds! read more

A fusion of Indian-Chinese cuisine Went there for lunch with my friend... had the lunch special menu which is available on weekdays I believe. The lunch menu selection is wide, lots of options from rice to noodles, it also includes a pop for the lunch special. I ordered the fish curry & my friend ordered the sweet & sour fried shrimp. My curry had a hint of spice, the fish was good. Restaurant is clean & basic Parking is plentiful along the street at Rupert & dome parking spaces in that small mall. Owner, Cheryl is very friendly. Check them out. read more

Really solid spot for Indian Chinese food! A really interesting restaurant with flavourful dishes. We got the small minced beef egg white soup to share, as well as the Manchurian beef fried rice and mambo chicken (similar to sweet and sour pork but more unique). Really well seasoned with a spicy kick. Portions are generous and I had to pack some for takeout! There is also a small parking lot and free parking on Rupert St. read more

As a Chinese, sometimes is glad that my friend would like to recommend some Chinese style restaurant for me. When I enter the restaurant, I was surprised. Since the whole restaurant are all packed and super busy! And there are no any Chinese there! Until I saw the menu, " Fine Indian style Chinese Cuisine ", I tell myself no wonder for this situation and I am really looking forward to try it! My friend suggested this sweet and garlic chicken, and we also ordered seafood soup and seafood fried rice. I love garlic! So the chicken taste was wonderful! And the seafood fried rice also got wok scents. Nice to try and wish I can try more other dishes next time! read more

We came here with two friends who advised us that this was the closest restaurant they found similar to South Indian cooking. We ordered the Vegetable Dumplings, Chicken Dumplings, General Tsao Chicken, Kung Pao Lamb, Manchurian Vegetable Ball, Hakka Vegetarian Chow Mein, Manchurian Chicken Fried Rice and Kulfi Ice Cream. It was a great meal to try different things and share. Everything was pretty brown in color, and standouts to me were the Manchurian Vegetable Balls, General Tsao Chicken and Chow Mein. Honestly, everything was so good and the flavors blended together, it was salty perfection. The service was great and you can understand why this place is always so busy. read more

One friend liked the food here, another disliked it. So far I have been here twice and the food was ok. The one who liked it loved the chili chicken. The other one felt it was too much soy sauce. The corn soup and fried rice were standard like other typical Chinese restaurants. I prefer the dishes with less sauce as the sauce could be too much in flavor. I do like that you could get pappadum here and the place is halal? Or at least no pork is served so I can dine here with friends who have restrictive diets. The parking lot in front is very tiny and very tight in parking space. I think it may be better to just park on the street off kingsway. Call ahead for pick up and there is a 10% or 15% off the main dishes (excludes rice and noodles etc). read more

Based on all the reviews and hearsay from my friends they claimed that this is best place to eat Indian-Chinese foods. Over rated for me,service is very friendly, but kinda slow. Its located on a corner lot with small parking on an even lot, shared with other business in this block.kinda hilly place.,street parking is available as well. The foods? I ordered ine of my favorite fried rice, the salted fish and diced chicken and i was kinda frustrated bec my expectations were all based on what I read and heard.,very ordinary actually not so good comparing to what I had from other restaurants that serves thesame. For my main entree I got the Manchurian beef, this one compensate for all the frustrations I had, meat was tender, the sauce was cooked just the way I like it,the spiciness was just right,I enjoyed it,not so generous serving portion in here and the place isnt cheap. Overall my experience in here was just average.. Noise level is kinda loud other patrons talks so loud. Try it yourself guys maybe I need to taste other dishes from their menu but for now I am just giving it a 3 star. read more

Chili Pepper House is one of the few Hakka (aka. Indo-Chinese) restaurants in town. They're located in a tiny plaza across the street from a VPL branch. We dropped in on a Wednesday (around 12:15pm) and it was reasonably busy with a couple tables occupied. Service is no frills and our waitress wasn't the most helpful. Menu is massive with over 250 dishes listed. Their weekday lunch specials are dirt cheap ($8.50) but they only offer very generic, Chinese dishes. We stuck with their chef's recommended dishes. - Rice ($4.25) - not a very large portion of rice to share between two. - Chili chicken (dark meat & boneless) (#38) ($14.30) - one of our buddies who loves this place suggested we try their chili chicken. Decent but it only comes with onions and sauce. - Spicy ginger & garlic beef (dry) (#60) - we were having trouble deciding what else to get so we asked the waitress and this was her suggestion. It reminded me of beef with broccoli except that there was onions and some chili peppers. Nothing memorable. Not even much heat to it. No plans to come back anytime soon. CPH didn't enthral our taste buds. read more

Stopped in here last week on the recommendation of how great this place is. I've always heard about fusion Chinese-Indian food but never had the chance to try it out. This review is more of a 2.5. So, we were pitched the Manchurian Chicken so we felt we had to order that. We also saw the Chili Paneer, hot chili wings and Masala Fried Rice that caught out eyes. For Indian Food and Chinese Food to both be packed with such flavour, we were underwhelmed. The Manchurian Chicken looks like it's going to be super flavourful and give something off but it tasted like it was covered in literally gravy (not that it looked like it but just comparing taste). The chili paneer was good, a little spicy but still lacking anything for me. I guess the whole vibe was that everything was basically just savoury bland. We couldn't taste any spice but maybe we just ordered the wrong combo of things. Wings were hot but I wasn't a fan of whatever they are coated in (yes, I realize it's chili flakes but it seemed a little off). Service wasn't great - we never got more than our initial glass of water. The fortune cookie tasted cheap. Maybe it was the expectations.. but it just didn't deliver. I'll read more reviews if I dare visit again to see what's amazing. read more

We've been doing takeout from here for about 6 years, and the food quality is consistently excellent -- one of our favourite Chinese places in Vancouver food-wise. As we're vegan, this place has a huge selection of vegetarian (mostly vegan) items. We have our favourite dishes, but we tend to rotate between a few. We usually either get the kung pao tofu with cashew nuts or Hunan tofu, the okra curry, and a mixed veggie dish (either with manchurian or black bean sauce). Their Manchurian veggie balls are a delightful treat as well. And their vegetarian hot & sour soup is a great way to start the meal. The owner, Cheryl, is very friendly and treats me well. But the service in general is pretty lacklustre, often disorganized and behind on orders. Also, they recently increased their prices, which is totally fine -- costs rise, I understand. But then they also suddenly stopped offering 15% off many (most?) dishes, so the initial 10-15% price rise turned into an effectively 25-30% rise. I did not appreciate this latter price hike at all, as it seems deceptive. If you need to raise prices more, just be transparent about it, or explicitly state that you no longer do the take-out discount. As of now, the menu still says 15% off main dishes, but this discount is not honoured on most dishes. Not appreciated. Cheryl, if you're reading this, it'd be nice if you could be more transparent about this; I see that on Google, many people have noticed this and are rightfully upset about it. All in all, I still love this place. Don't expect great service, but the food is awesome. read more

Wanted to try Indo-Chinese food at a place other than Green Lettuce so came here after reading some of the reviews.. Ordered Chicken Corn Soup (4**** for hot out of 5) which was very tasty, had lots of corn and diced chicken pieces. Did add some soy sauce, salt and vinegar green chillies to boost the flavor.. Also ordered Chili Chicken and White Rice. The Chicken was crispy but the sauce was a little too dark and bland even after asking for 4 **** The ambience was comfortable enough.. The Server was a SUPER kind lady who was very attentive and polite... May come back here to try a few more items like Chow-Mein and Pepper Fish.. Overall a decent experience (Pro-Tip that might irritate the owners - if You leave a tip, it does not go to the servers, the owners take it, which is utterly sad) read more

Quality has gone down while the prices go up how can you justify this! If you want inflammation from seed oils eat here

My friend and I were not too impressed with the food here. We were in the area and since he wanted Indian and I wanted Chinese, I thought this would be the perfect compromise. We stopped by for an early dinner around 5:30 on a Sunday and it was pretty empty. I started with their chicken wings and continued on to my main dish of fish in black bean sauce. The chicken wings were completely bland and had way too much batter. I ended up having to adding salt to make it palatable, and even then, I only ate about half of them. Probably some of the worst Chinese wings I've ever had. The fish in black bean sauce was decent and came with large enough portions that I took half home and had it for lunch the next day. My friend went with a paneer curry but was not impressed with it at all. He also ordered some bread to eat it with on the side, and the naan looked like they bought it frozen and reheated it up. Next time we want good Indo-Chinese food, we'll stick to our regular Green Lettuce. We definitely won't be back. read more

I have never tried Hakka dishes and glad to come here. We ordered four dishes and each has hint from Malaysian, Indian and Chinese. It's quite hard where is the origin but everything delicious. I've been dining here for more than once and CPH is a wonderful Indo-Chinese fusion experience. Price isn't cheap, but they make really good food here. I honestly can't pick one between Indian Wok and Chilli Pepper House lol. The food here is full of flavours and my family and I couldn't stop sweating after eating our food. These are what I ordered today: 101. Mambo Beef ($13.50), 130. House Style Garlic Fried Fish ($13.30), 27. Seafood Hot and Sour soup (med $7.99) and 216. Masala Seafood Fried Rice ($13.50) they were all pretty good. I regret not ordering any vegetarian dish, but we were already full from eating. Check out my photo for lunch specials (from L1-L26 are all $8.95). Try Chilli Pepper House this place is worth it! read more

*Review for takeout in COVID time I was craving hakka noodles since I haven't had them since I lived in Toronto. It seems like this place and Green Lettuce are the only places in Vancouver making these noodles. I ordered the manchurian hakka noodles. 3 stars for the noodles, they satisfied my craving but weren't spicy like promised. Honestly tasted more like oily Shanghai noodles, I think I prefer schezuan style hakka noodles. Just wish they would've been spicier, then it would've been perfect! 10% off for takeout is a bonus. I'm sure it's hard to run a restaurant right now but their staff weren't wearing masks/gloves, which was a little bothersome to me. read more

The Kung Pao Chicken was mind blowing...So different and very original to all the other generic Chinese food place...it is a must order !!! We were visiting from California and have been going to Whistler for 10 years...Discovered this place by accident deciding to take a different route from YVR to Whistler...We got to speak with Sherryl the owner and learned about her history of the place...Looking forward to a new tradition year after year going to the Chili Pepper House after we land...Only about a 10-15 minute drive from the airport so I recommend people to try...and avoid Vancouver traffic LOL read more

The restaurant is right at the corner of Rupert Street and Kingsway. Although there are only a few parking stalls outside the restaurant, people can find free parking on the street. The size of the restaurant has a decent number of tables but it is not too big or too small. The owner of this restaurant is quite smart targeting different ethnic people such as Indian, Chinese, and western people. The interior design of the restaurant is average. It is like a normal Chinese restaurant without any modern designs. It is a casual ambience. I came here twice already. Dishes of food tasted great. I tried their lamb, chicken, vegetables, fried rice and fried noodles. Everything was so good that I had no complaints about them. If you are health conscious, probably you don't want to order the fried food. However, the sauce that each dish had was excellent. The restaurant used different types of spices to cook the sauces. I would like to come back and try more dishes in the near future. read more

A well established "Chindian" food I recently visited though the last time was more than ten years ago. It's very popular with East Indians because it's a fusion of Chinese food cooked Indian style. Owners were originally from Kolkata in India. Unique dishes like Mongolian style meat , spicy tofu reasonably priced. Fried Singapore noodles was disappointing , dry and tasteless. Good ambience located in east Vancouver Rupert/Kingsway read more

We have been going here for years and it has always been delicious, today the experience was extremely disappointing. We ordered the curry eggplant, the dry spicy chilli garlic beans and the spicy ginger garlic fish. When we went to pay the bill, we were charged more than the menu stated on every single item. In addition the portions were substantially smaller than in previous visits. The fish dish was delicious, the beans were also yummy but the eggplant dish tasted like batter and cornstarch and there was not much actual eggplant in the dish. When we questioned the discrepancy between the bill and the listed prices on the menu the woman who we spoke to (one of the owners) was quite rude, and showed us on the menu where in small print it said "prices subject to change" and argued that prices have gone up and that menus are expensive to print. I told her that I understand that but that when ordering she should have told us that the prices had gone up. Her demeanour and the attitude that she directed towards us was short, rude and lacking any good graces toward a paying customer. Although I like the food here I will NOT return out of principal, I will not support a business that treats me with disrespect. read more

Extremely popular with the East Indian community. This is a Chinese restaurant, first and foremost. But, the spices they use are heavily influenced by India. As a result, the food is probably best described as Chinese-Indian fusion. That explains why 70℅ of the guests during our visit were East Indian. 10℅ were white, the remaining were Asian. Throughout the evening, about half a dozen East Indian customers dropped by to pick up their takeout orders. The waitress gave suggestions as it was our first visit. The food arrived in under 10 minutes. Sadly, rice and Naan Bread was not included with the food. So, set aside another $5-7 for fillers. Our Spicy Garlic Pepper Beef was amazing. The beef was tender, not sinewy like some other places. It wasn't as hot as I expected, so next time around, I might opt to pay a bit more for an upgrade in the heat level. That said, the depth of flavours and just the right amount of glaze made this dish very good. We also ordered the Assorted Vegetables with Manchurian sauce which proved to be a perfect complement to the beef. The vegetables consisted of broccoli, onions, carrots, baby corn and other common veggies. The sauce was sweetish, even though the menu gave this dish 2 peppers. Vegetables were crisp and fresh. I don't know if they make their own Naan Bread or not. But, if there was any shortcoming to our meal, it was their Naan Bread. Our bread came out with several noticeably burnt regions. The bread looked like the ones you could buy at a big box grocery store that were reheated/toasted. Rice was good, although the thought of having to pay for a staple is a foreign concept to this Yelper. What's next? Paying for tap water? Overall, a very pleasant surprise. We will definitely come back more often to try some of their more India-centric dishes. read more

What a disappointment. My favourite hot and sour soup had too much vinegar. My favourite green beans was not tender, it was very poor quality beans where the little beans in the center were hard. Complained to the waiter but nothing was done. Our table ordered 3 plates of it. Chilli prawns was way too salty, in fact most of our dishes with the exception of the friend rice and noodles were way too salty. Out of the 12 dishes we ordered nothing was particularly good or memorable except for the honey garlic chicken wings. I will not be coming back anytime soon as this experience has left a very bad taste in my mouth. read more

I have to give this is a minimum of one star and that is the problem. If there were negative scores, I would have definitely opted for that. I ordered Chicken Hakka Noodles, Veg Hakka Noodles and Veg Manchurian over Door Dash from these guys (Just because my wife loves the Veg Manchurian from them). And the problem was not the veg food. Here's the problem - I am allergic to shell Fish and consuming it can easily send me to the hospital. My surprise and disgust was when I found a piece of Shrimp in my Chicken Hakka Noodles. Lucky I noticed it before I would have put it in my mouth. And when I called and complained to the manager, I did not even get an apology. All she said was that she'll make sure it won't happen again. I would consider this bad customer service period. And sorry to say this, but at a restaurant at which they mix meats in a specific meat order, I would be worried about the hygiene as well, as a customer. I, with such an experience would never order food from this restaurant again. read more

I had seafood fried rice, garlic fried squid, and spicy cumins lamb, and hot sour soup. Very very tasty and yummy! The squid was crispy and soft inside. You really don't expect much from how this restaurant appears outside (or even inside, for that matter), but wow, this food is legit. My husband and I lived in NYC for years, and we are always on the hunt for the type of Indo-Chinese food we'd travel out to Queens to eat. No place has ever come close... until now. We ordered Hot and Sour soup, Manchurian Prawn Chow Mein, Fried Tofu (Manchurian sauce on the side), Chili Beef, House Special Spicy Garlic Fish and the chicken wings kids' meal. The portion sizes were generous, and we took plenty of leftovers home with us. Hands down, the star of the meal was the fried fish. We were literally fighting for the last piece! It's crispy fried fish that has a spicy garlic sauce drizzled over the top (dry, not saucy). The fish was not heavy or greasy at all, and the sauce was delicious. Speaking of delicious sauces, the Manchurian sauce was soooo good. Since we had ordered the fried tofu for my picky eating kids, we had a bowl of this sauce on the side, and we were just drizzling on everything. The hot and sour soup was very good - if you love it traditionally, you REALLY need to try the Indo-Chinese version. The different spices and spiciness make it a whole different version, and I swear, the addition of cilantro is a game changer. The noodles were good, not soft and mushy, and well sauced (more on the dry side). I am only sad that that we discovered this gem so far from home (I live in the Seattle area). But I have a feeling we'll be planning meals around this restaurant on future trips to Vancouver. read more

We go back for the food but the service lately has been going downhill and picking up speed. It's not even worth going for the food anymore. We always pick up and the food is never ready when they say it will be, the portions have gotten smaller, the people working are rude. My boyfriend went to pick up and they misquoted the total by $17 and gave him the wrong change. Another customer had waited 40 minutes and asked for his money back. They claimed it was busy (it wasn't) and refused to give him his money. We've said it before but after this last time, we are definitely not going back again. read more

Of all the Indo-chinese restaurants I've been to, chili pepper house is my definite favourite. The foods fantastically spicy and full of such rich flavour without compromising heavy sodium notes. The ownership and staff are gregariously friendly and welcoming. The lighting and fixtures are clean, bright and make it easy to invite the most pickiest diners. The go to's are the hot and sour soup, mambo and Manchurian anything. But there's so much on the menu that I'm sure you'll find something that appeals to you. 5/5 #roadtoelite read more

After years of living nearby, driving by countless times, and multiple recommendations I finally gave this place a try. I ordered a variety of items for takeout, and it was ready fairly quickly. The vegetable pakora serving was huge! It had a nice texture and a lot of different vegetables in it. I also ordered the manchurian shrimp chowmein (unexpectedly orange in color), honey garlic chicken (nothing special) and chili paneer (ok, but I kept thinking it was tofu). Not sure what spicy level they made it but it had a good kick. The chowmein and paneer were the best of the bunch. Serving sizes seemed larger than normal, and is a decent value even though prices were higher than I'd seen online. I can see why people like it, but I wasn't crazy about it. It could have been what I ordered but there were some flavors I wasn't crazy about. Raw garlic maybe? Herbs/spices? I'll probably be back to try something else, but it won't be my first choice. read more

Food was decent. Not bad but didn't blow me away. Had the chicken satay a which were well flavoured and well portioned. The spicy garlic green beans were alright, but we've definitely had better. The Manchurian fried rice was probably one of their best dishes. We also had the general tsaos chicken which actually was very good (they actually were better than the Manchurian chicken). All in all food was decent but not mind blowing. Not really worth the trip out here imo. However, service was dismal..and dismal is an understatement. Not only did we not have cutlery even when our dishes arrived, but we had to repeatedly ask for cutlery to eat. No drinks were offered (no tea no water) and again, we had to repeatedly call them for drinks. This is the first time in years and years where the service was so bad that I actually did not tip. There was no service. It was absolutely ridiculous. Because of the fact that the food was decent, I'll still give them two stars. They lose everything else for service. Ridiculous. read more

2.4 Stars (star reduction after recent visit) There is free parking in a small tight parking lot that is shared with 2 other businesses. Also free parking along Rupert after 6pm. First impressions, well lit, not very big, and the seating was a little tight. We walked in at 530pm and got a table for 3 people right away. By the time 6pm came around, the restaurant was packed. We ordered: Vegetarian Hot & Sour Soup(med) - good flavour and temperature Vegetable Pakora w/ chutney - this was my favourite dish. The chutney reminds me of a spicy Thai chili lime dipping sauce Manchurian Chicken - very saucy, was expecting it to be spicier. Spicy Ginger/Garlic Fish - another saucy dish. and not spicy either. Manchurian Beef Chow Mein - the beef was tender White Rice(med) - good idea to order a bowl of rice to eat with all the sauces. The food took awhile to come out, as the restaurant was packed. Service during the meal was good. Cleared the empty plates quickly and refilled our waters regularly. Chilli Pepper House is a self proclaimed "Fine Indian (Desi) style Chinese cuisine". It's basically Chinese cuisine cooked with East Indian spices. So, is it fusion? Depends on your definition of fusion. If you think fusion is a pima donna chef trying to combine two different styles into some French nouveau cuisine then it's not fusion. There's one noticeable thing when I come in here to pick up my food, I see lots of East Indian customers and a few Asians. So, you know they have some spicy food in here. It's a little corner restaurant, so space is scarce. There seems to be one theme to all the dishes I order, they all have the same sauce. Yes, I say it again, they use the same sauce on all their dishes with a little varying degree of spiciness. The sauce was heavy in consistency, but was not bad. The Singapore vermicelli was too salty, it was like the chef had Alzheimers and forgot how much salt was used. Please keep a holster on that salt shaker as some of us are trying to keep a low sodium diet. So, what the yelp is up with the no pork? East Indians don't eat beef but I believe pork is fine. Give us the "other white meat"! Order and pick up your food to get a 15% discount. Decent food but too heavy on the one sauce act and no pork gets a 3 star. read more
