Chikuyo Tei is a nicer strip mall Japanese restaurant for the area. The restaurant is new in an existing building with a nice interior renovation. We visited for lunch of Friday to take advantage of the lunch specials. I ordered the 5 pc nigiri with California roll for $10.99 which is about the going rate for such. It didn't disappoint. It came with a salad that was good although the dressing was a bit runny. The wife ordered a plentiful $8.99 chicken teriyaki bento box. Finally a decent sushi place in Hermitage! We came in here on a Tuesday evening and was surprised to see that only one other couple was in the restaurant. The interior is super cute and clean. We ordered 3 rolls and 3 different kinds of nigiri. They brought it out to us on a huge boat with a little rubber duck sitting on it. It was adorable and I appreciate the time spent on the presentation. I can't remember the names of the rolls we ordered (I think aloha, hana and spicy spider crunch?). What I do remember is that the spicy roll was killer (and truly spicy) and the other were two good but not memorable. The nigri however... super fresh fish. A+++ on that! This was some dope sushi! I got the Rock Lobster roll. It's a cooked roll with avocado, cream cheese, eel sauce, and cpl other things. Probably the most expensive roll ($17-$18) but totally worth it. (3.5, rounded up)On a busy Friday night at 6pm, here's my dinner experience of 2. -The Good: 1)Quick polite service: Though busy, we felt we were taken care of. 2)Crab Rangoon was crispy and filling. Hibachi Chicken. Portion sizes were excellent. The Yum-Yum sauce is really good, with a minor spicy twist. Sushi was good and menu is expansive. ($4.50 for 6 pieces)! 3) Atmosphere: It was clean and mostly quiet. There was a bustle about the place, but overall it was an enjoyable evening. The Meh: 1) The Miso Soup was average at best (not much flavor, overly salty). 2) The fried rice was okay. Again, not much flavor. -The Bad: 1) My wife ordered the filet mignon "medium" but it came back very rare. We asked our waitress to take it back and cook it longer because we ordered "medium". The second time it came back, it was also rare again. We asked for a plate of chicken instead and didn't touch the steak. So be aware of the steak doneness!! We were scared of the chicken doneness as well after this. It really detracted from our experience. So I ended up here by accident. Yelp or my map app was having quite the off night because after a business meeting in the general area of this restaurant I clicked "get directions" to about 4 places from yelp only to "arrive" -- and find the restaurant nowhere in sight. So I decided to eat at the very next non fast-food place I saw and this is where I ended up. And...it was pretty, pretty good. I was famished after a long day and opted for a sushi appetizer--the crazy roll--and a vegetable pad Thai plate. The sushi was excellent: great flavor and texture, delicious sauce and while it's not usually the kind of thing I pay much attention to it was plated excellently, just really pretty to even look at. I devoured that with a (decently priced) beer and waited on the pad thai. Which was not bad though not as great as the sushi. I've never had pad thai that wasn't at least somewhat spicy but this one had no heat and the noodles were just a tad on the mushy side. Other than that the flavor was really good and the portion was generous particularly for the price. All in all a good find and I'm glad I ended up here. I was here on a weeknight and it was an enormous place that was very sparsely attended so hopefully other folks discover this place soon. read more

The soup and salad were fair, but I ordered the seafood hibachi and I wouldn't wish that punishment on anyone. The seafood was so over cooked it chewed like a well done skirt steak. The lobster still had two pieces of shell on it that I randomly found with my teeth. And the flavor of the sauce was on the level of frozen food aisle. I got the Kari Noodle Soup and it was really good. There was a ton of pork in there too. The portion was very generous and I ended up saving half for later. The way it was packaged for to-go was also really helpful in keeping everything fresh as the soup base was in one container and everything else in the other. read more

We dine in or take out weekly depending if we want to deal with the laziness of the servers. Every time we eat here we have to wave down our server to ask for a refill. I have served for many years and it is known that you refill your customers drinks. Especially when they are in the middle of the meal. I can't wrap my mind around it. Now the food, the food is so good. We usually get 4 rolls and appetizers. Their crab Rangoon and egg and spring rolls are so good. My husband likes their fried rice and gets that often too! We really enjoy this little spot and have visited several times. The manager is very friendly and always does a little something extra for us. The ginger dressing is delicious, she told us that they add fruit to their recipe. All the sushi rolls we've tried have been good, some great. I love that if you order 5 more rolls they bring it out on a sushi boat. They just added Pad Thai to the menu and it was better than lots of other places I tried. The service can be a little slow at times but they staff is friendly and the food is good. Definitely give this place a go. read more

Let me start by saying that the food is very good. I have been to the restaurant twice and the food is consistantly good. Our most recent visit was a party of three. We all ordered a roll for ourselves. Two ordered the same roll at 12.95. One ordered was 6.00.When the food came to the table they were all the same. The waitress/owner avoided us as I tried to flag her down. I had to get up and walk to the cash register. Told them our issue. They argued without even coming to the table to see rolls. They told us the rolls were very similar. They were the same roll, same plating, same taste. So, look at the rolls and prices. You may he paying double for the same roll. Another issue is the atmosphere/ambiance. The restaurant is very nice and clean. The music and the lighting is so bright and music so dry, it is almost uncomfortable. Almost feels like a department store. It is a shame because you can see the owners put so much into making the space look good. The ceiling can lights need to be dimmed and individual lights added to each table. The music needs to change to something a bit more hip. The bar looks good but only beer is offered. Not sure if I would go back because of the managment and atmosphere. Its a shame, the food is very good. read more

Review for carryout sushi only. My husband and I do carryout sushi on Sunday evenings a couple times a month, so thought we would give this new place a try. This experience was 5 stars for sure. Person taking my order over the phone was polite and easy to understand. Order was ready upon arrival and my husband said the restaurant was really pretty inside. Our order was exactly correct and the sushi was fresh and absolutely delicious. We enjoyed the Rainbow Roll, Pink Lady Roll, Crunchy Shrimp Roll and an order of Edamame -- again, all were delicious. Price was good and comparable to other local Japanese restaurants. Our order came with two beautiful sets of reusable chopsticks in a nice, drawstring bags -- nice touch. Wanted to love this place because there are so few sushi places in the area. Had my heart set on sushi tonight and my favorite spot in the area is closed on mondays so I decided to try this one. After reading several good reviews I figured it would be awesome, but was kind of disappointed to find out the opposite. I was not impressed to say the least. Nothing was horrible, but it just wasn't good. My favorite thing was the avocado roll if that says anything to you. I'm reluctant to write a bad review because maybe they just had a bad night..but even the fried rice was "interesting". It just tasted like mushy cooked rice with loads of pepper on it. Maybe it was close to close and someone got lazy? I have no idea but next time I crave sushi I'll make sure it's not on a Monday so I can go to Sushi Thai on old hickory. read more

It started off bad. I'm a very friendly and outgoing person. When I walked in I kindly asked the hostess/waitress taking my to go order, what was the best thing to order from them? I could tell her English was not good and she was uncomfortable so I laughed it off and went ahead with my order. I ordered the fillet hibachi dinner and two pieces of yellowtail sushi. My wife ordered the lobster roll and the Philadelphia roll. I got a side salad with ginger dressing, my wife got a miso soup and I got the mushroom and scallion soup. The wait was not bad. They told me 20 minutes, it was ready in 15. The food was bad. All around. The hibachi steak was very bland and I do not believe that it was fillet. It had too many pieces of fat to be true fillet. Extremely bland. Though it was cooked to the correct temp I requested, medium rare. The best thing about the entire meal was the fried rice. Very good. The vegetables weren't half bad either. But the really bad parts were the sushi. My wife could not even eat her lobster roll. It tasted earthy and fishy. Did not taste or seem fresh. The Philadelphia roll also had a fishy and sort of old taste to it. Both soups, the miso and the mushroom and scallion also tasted fishy and sort of dirty. The lettuce in my salad was old and some of it was bad and I had to throw it out. The two pieces of yellowtail that I got both tasted old and fishy. I ate about six bites of the steak, most of the rice, half of the salad and most everything else was thrown out. The total cost of the meal was $55. If I felt that the customer service was on par with what I had expected of a typical middle Tennessee hibachi restaurant, I would've called and went back. But given the seemingly uncomfortableness of the girl that took my order, I figured best just to charge this one to "somewhere we will never eat again". I don't like to leave bad reviews, but I always leave honest reviews. Maybe they can get it together in the future and get better quality ingredients? Also the customer service could be much improved. Maybe hire a part time hostess to take to go orders who is fluent in English and outgoing enough to deal with the day-to-day customers. read more

I have been to many Asian cuisine places, this one by far is the best. I have a Japanese restaurant literally 3 minutes from my house. I would come to Chikuyo's instead, is way better. As a matter of fact my Mom and I were so impressed that she's coming back tmw with family. The atmosphere is nice, the decor is beautiful, and this place is extremely clean. I ordered the Crispy Calamari and it was chewy and tough. My sushi was good. Any waitress ( she looked 12) was very inattentive and seemed preoccupied. Went in having high hopes because of the reviews plus the place is gorgeous. Ordered takoyaki and gyoza for apps. The gyoza were alright but the takoyaki was extremely chewy since the octopus was overcooked. For the meals we got teriyaki steak lunch hibachi with mushroom soup and ginger salad and katsu chicken bento box. The soup and salad tasted like all the hibachi places I've had which is good. The steak was underseasoned and overcooked, the rice was decent but it's hard to mess that up. The yum yum sauce was ok, I've had way better. The veggies were all raw, which I don't mind if they are supposed to be. My meal came out kind of lukewarm like it waited awhile to come out. My friend's katsu was unimpressive and the sauce tasted bottled. The sushi was alright in the bento but they didn't even bring out chopsticks for it. Plus no sauce for the gyoza in the bento even though the app comes with it. The whole experience was lackluster and the waitress was somewhat rude and not very attentive. Not much crunch for something that should have been fried. Also ordered the chicken hibachi lunch. Asked for no mushrooms. There were mushrooms, but luckily they were large chunks so I just picked them out. The hibachi was a large portion and also came with soup (I got the miso, which was super bland, but it is miso soup) and a salad (it was fine. There were some giant chunks of lettuce that I avoided but it was fine) the hibachi was too salty for me but still edible. All in all it was fine. Ok. Best sushi I have tasted in 25 years (and then it was in Japan.) We tried 4 different signature rolls and totally recommend any of them. We had the Chikuyo signature roll, the fire dragon, the angel, and the rock lobster roll. All of them were amazing! The edamame tasted like it was just picked and the vegetable tempura was wonderful!
