I experienced Maru Ichi as Maru Iyagi. Ordering (walkable retrieval) food online from my hotel in the early winter was harder than I thought. I knew I wanted something a little more elevated than fast food but nothing overly fancy (for which you should always do dine in). After striking out with my first choice, I came across Maru. I didn't know if it was related to the other Maru restaurants found around Middle Tennessee. I assumed it was (bad assumption? I'm asking) and, led by my good experience at Maru in East End, I made my way to Maru Iyagi.* Hoofing it, I took notice of how inviting the shopping center where the restaurant is located is. It was a reminder that Hendersonville has money (said in my best Quinta-before-*she*-had-money voice). Because of all the flim flammery involved in me looking for a restaurant, I ordered later than I'd planned. This was a mistake. Food workers don't like last minute orders. I get it. I was once one. I didn't like them. I walked in to a mostly empty dining room and bothered service. I get it. Not wanting to be (more of) a burden, I opted for fried rice rather than being so involved as to order sushi. I added shrimp (for protein) to my rice for an extra $3. I walked in, approached the hostess, asked for my order, was led to the bar area, got my food very quickly after that (ruh roh, Shaggy), thanked everyone profusely, and walked back to my hotel. The rice was... okay. Granted, it's fried rice and not a complicated order but I was a bit taken aback by how quickly it was ready. My $3 shrimp were small and hard to come by. This was not a meal made with love. Again, I get it. I've been there. Noted. If there's a next time, I'll be sure to get my order in early. Just moved here from California, so we're pretty spoiled with sushi places, Asian restaurants and fresh fish. Maru Iyagu did not disappoint. I hesitate to order anything with unagi in it, because you can tell right away when it's not a fresh. However, that's the best way to rule out some of these sushi houses. So, we ordered rolls with unagi, we also ordered the rainbow roll which had 3 different types of fish. The special rolls we ordered had enough flavor that you didn't need anything extra on it, like soy sauce or wasabi, etc. Everything was delicious. I also noticed the menu had other Japanese fare, like Katsu curry, and some Korean, like bulgogi, which you don't always see. I will try that next time I'm here, because I will be coming back. Our server was also very sweet and had great recommendations. I wish I could remember her name ‍ The ambiance was great, no complaints there. It's near the movie theatre, so it'd be a perfect place to go before or after a movie! The sushi legit tasted like it was on the verge of spoiling and I had to text my coworker that I wasn't sure id make it back in the office because I might get sick. The scallop sushi was comically large, like half the size of your fist. I didn't know if they were being generous or thought it'd be funny to see someone try to take it down. This was the perfect place to stop in for a Bento lunch. Miso,Salad, Tonkatsu, Calif roll, Gyoza, rice. So if you're looking for great Japanese this is not the place, but a really close 2nd. The Bento was plenty but we always have to try different things on the menu. Miso had a great flavor and bean curd thickness, light on tofu. Tankatzu was really thin and fried maybe just a bit much, so no juicy meat flavor but it still was good. Salad was a romaine with their dressing, Gyoza also fried a bit to much as opposed to pan seared. I personally prefer steamed. We came in about 30 minutes before their afternoon closing. Our service was great, food served with all the right condiments such as Sauce, wasabi, ginger. The interior was inviting and had the Asian fusion vibe, really my only issue was the horrible rap music playing and all the F-bombs in the lyrics. I've been coming to this restaurant for years, but since the ownership has changed, I have not had great experiences. My family and I had a large party, but that still is not a fair excuse. Myself and 6 other people ordered sushi. The sushi for the 5 other people came well after the other entrees showed up, but mine was not there. I said that my 2 rolls were missing and it was still another half hour before my rolls showed up. Who I assume was the manager came over and basically told me that I ordered my rolls after everyone so that's why they came after, which isn't true. I have no problem with mistakes being made, but I was blamed for them not including everything and nothing was offered to be taken off the receipt. I cannot believe our luck! I am a big fan of Maru in East Nashville, and I frequently lament the shortage of independent, good food in Hendersonville. When I found out that Maru was opening a second location there, I was ecstatic! It finally opened and we tried it last night. I am thrilled to report that it is just as good as the East Nashville location. First, my apologies- I got greedy and snarfed down the sushi without taking any pictures. Whoops. I'll try better next time. We ordered the chicken yaki soba for our toddler. He can be rather picky, but he gobbled it up! It was a big enough portion for him to eat until he was totally full and still have enough for his lunch the following day. I tried it, delicious. I especially liked the carrots- they were soft and sweet, wish I knew how to make them like that. My husband and I shared a couple rolls as an appetizer. I chose the yellowtail and scallion roll, and it was delicious. He chose the unagi roll, also quite wonderful! It's clear they use high quality fish. Very fresh. I had the Miso Ramen with pork belly and egg. It was a huge bowl, more than I could finish. The broth was perfect! The right amount of flavor while not overpowering my palate. My husband had the Nabeyaki Udon, which I tasted. It was also amazing, I'll probably get that one next time. Between the sushi and his soup, he was stuffed. The portions are definitely filling. We did not order any alcohol on this visit, but I could see on the bar that there is a nice selection of wine and sake, and someone ordered a nice looking draft beer. My first confession is that I visited Maru Iyagi, not once, but twice in 2 days because I was so impressed with their sushi. My second confession is that I don't have any pictures because I devoured my sushi upon receiving it both times. I think maybe I would have remembered if I dined in, but it was for takeout both times. In Hendersonville & Gallatin, I've tried several sushi-specialty restaurants and restaurants that serve sushi but none "wow'd" me like Maru Iyagi. The staff are very nice. I tried ordering online but I wasn't familiar with their menu, so I ended up just ordering to-go, in-person. They were accommodating and answered all my questions, even gave me suggestions. Between my two visits, I ordered 7 maki rolls and ginger salads. They even recognized me the second time. The ginger salad is OK. Not knocking on Maru Iyagi specifically, but it seems to me all ginger salads have underwhelming flavor. It's like the ginger dressing is watered down. So to deal with that issue on the 2nd order, I just ordered extra dressing because doubling your dressing means more flavor, right? Now the rolls. On the first order, I ordered these rolls: Pink Lady Hurricane Rainbow Baja Fresh On the second order, I ordered these rolls: Pink Lady Hurricane Dragon Initially, I thought the Pink Lady & Hurricane were my favorites, that is until I tried the Dragon roll. That is my current favorite there. The Dragon Roll's fish of choice is eel, which isn't my favorite fish but it's the avocado and eel sauce that make it. I'm a big avocado fan, sometimes I eat it straight with just a spoon. The Dragon Roll has so much avocado, each piece is silky & smooth and the eel sauce gives it a nice sweet-soy sauce flavor. My second favorite is a tie between the Pink Lady Roll & Hurricane Roll. Both are very similar because they both have the same base: spicy crab, cucumber, & avocado. The differences are that the Pink Lady uses yellowtail, scallion, fish roe, and spicy mayo while the Hurricane uses tuna and white sauce. I'm not sure what's in the white sauce, but the flavor profiles are close. I question whether the spicy crab is made with imitation crab or real crab (probably the former), but both rolls are savory, sweet, and creamy. The Baja Fresh would be up there at #2 but it's spicy. I love spicy food and although I enjoyed it, it wrecked me 2 days later. I don't think it's so much the jalapeno slices but the chili sauce that did me in. The jalapeno slices & cilantro give it a fresh flavor with a crunch. Lastly, my least favorite was Rainbow. Nothing against this roll flavor-wise, but more price-wise. It's a variety crab/cucumber/avocado roll that alternates tuna, salmon, white fish, and shrimp. This roll is 10.95$. A plain Spicy Tuna or Salmon roll is $6.95. Despite alternating the protein here, I doubt crab/cucumber/avocado is worth the $4 upcharge. Currently Maru Iyagi holds the crown for best sushi in the area. It's not as fancy as the places down in Nashville but it's delicious, it's fresh, and it hits the spot. read more

And they are open on Sundays! I grabbed take out and it was ready ahead of schedule. We stopped by for the first time today during lunch and it most definitely delivered. We ordered the lunch special Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box, Yakisoba Udon with shrimp, and an order of fried Vegetable Gyoza. The Gyoza was the first fried gyoza I've had. They were quite good. There was 5 of them and a very small amount of sauce but they had enough flavor that the sauce wasn't needed. The Bento Box was also a first for me. Chicken was charred but very tasty. Sauce, salad, and rice, were all great. Never had sushi before but the California Roll wasn't bad at all. The Yakisoba Udon noodles were HUGE. Like each noodle was the thickness of my pinkie. They were perfect though. Paired with the veggies and sauce, there was not a bad bite in there. The service was average and the music was quite the variety.
