I reached out to a friend who is car-savvy for advice on where to take it, and he pointed me here. The scheduler was super friendly and efficient and got me on the books a few days after my call. The vibe was completely different than the dealership, as I felt like the folks at Max Automotive genuinely cared about getting me taken care of and figuring what the issue was with the vehicle. They also understood that at over 20 years old and nearly 200,000 miles, I wasn't going to perform any heroics for this car. We came up with a good plan to keep the car running for as long as possible with as minimal maintenance as possible. I look forward to working with the team here for maintenance of my new old car.

When I arrived, I was told there was coolant everywhere, that it would need to be cleaned up, and that they would need to take a look at it. I simply asked how much that additional work would cost. Instead of giving me an estimate or even offering to inspect the vehicle, I was told, "We're not going to do this. There are many automotive places you can take it to." That response was extremely disappointing and a complete waste of my time. I brought my vehicle to an automotive repair shop expecting them to diagnose the issue, explain what needed to be done, and provide an estimate so I could make an informed decision. If Max Automotive wasn't willing or able to handle the situation, they could have simply said so when I initially scheduled the appointment rather than having me bring the vehicle in. I understand that not every repair shop can or wants to take on every job, but dismissing a customer after they have made the trip to the shop and refusing to even provide an estimate is poor customer service. I would not recommend Max Automotive based on this experience.

But to my dismay, I didn't anticipate this install taking the entire day. Peoria Subaru quoted me 2 hr. install + 1 hr. on the alignment rack. Christian Bros. closes at 6p. and at 630p - I was still sitting in their lobby. I did not get any updates throughout the day & had to call myself and ask at 530p. I believe they overbooked themselves. I don't know if that necessarily detracts from their great customer service, but it's constructive criticism I'd offer to their mgmt.

Had some routine maintenance done in southern CA before he drove it to AZ in August. Van has been running just fine. Son called last week and said it wouldn't start. He has a portable charger...used it and it started right away. Drove it around for about 20 minutes, went to a local auto parts store and asked them to test the battery. Battery tested "good". He drove it back to campus, shut off the engine, then attempted to restart it. Wouldn't start. So, thought it may be the alternator. Looked up local mechanics and found Christian Brothers Automotive. Had him drive it over there and drop it off (Friday afternoon). They called my son Monday afternoon stating the battery terminals appeared to have been "jerry-rigged" causing a poor connection. No mention of replacing the terminal ends, but rather the battery cables entirely. Estimate? $2030....yes, you read that correctly. TWO THOUSAND and THIRTY DOLLARS. A quick Google search considers that estimate to be "extremely high and unreasonable". As after-market cables run roughly $65/each and installation should take less than two hours. So, parts & labor should run in the $250 to $400 (high end) range. Told my son to relay the phone # to the shop so I could call them (I wanted to hear the quote for myself). Told them not to order any parts or do any work. My son Uber'd over and picked up the van. Here's the final kicker....they charged him $103. For what, I have no idea? Absolutely ridiculous. That wasn't my experience. I wasn't shown clear proof or given alternative options before being told I needed one of the most expensive repairs possible. After a routine oil change, I was also suddenly told I now need an oil pressure switch, which raises additional concerns - are they manufacturing problems to drive ticket value? I've since heard similar experiences from others being told they need full transmissions as well, which makes this feel less like a case-by-case diagnosis. I recommend getting a second opinion before committing to major repairs here.
