My wife and I were in Montpelier, and since she was craving tacos, we decided to try Chico's Tacos and Bar for the first time. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt warm and inviting. Our server, Sam L, greeted us right away and asked if we preferred to sit indoors or outside on the patio. We went with the patio, which turned out to be a great choice, it had a fun and relaxed vibe, perfect for dinner. We started with the Chips & Queso ($6) as our side. The chips came out fresh, and the queso was creamy, flavorful, and just the right kind of indulgent starter. For drinks, I went with the Jarritos Punch ($15) sweet, refreshing, and definitely a fun pick. My wife stuck with water, which Sam kept refilled throughout the meal. For the main course, I ordered the Gordo Burrito ($21). It was an 11" flour tortilla stuffed with guajillo/lime chicken, refried beans, rice, pico de gallo, and cheese, smothered in a red sauce, and finished with crema and guacamole. It was hearty, flavorful, and more than satisfying, the perfect comfort dish. My wife went with the 2 Tacos ($13) one with chicken and one with beef. They came topped with cilantro, onion, lime, and cotija cheese on fresh corn tortillas. She really enjoyed them and loved how authentic they tasted. Overall, we were enjoyed our meal. The food was fresh and flavorful, the service from Sam was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and the patio ambiance was just right for a casual night out. Chico's Tacos and Bar is definitely a spot we'd come back to the next time we're in Montpelier. read more

Went for the historic tour. Stayed to eat here. This is a unique and trendy restaurant. In a bank from 1874 with the bank vault still inside. Marble flooring greets you as you step inside. Tables around the edges to view out onto the town. We all ordered different food and all of them were excellent. Pool table to use while you wait. Staff friendly and food came out fast. Hands down the best and most authentic, farm to table southwest, Tex-Mex food and drink we've had in a long, long time...not just in Vermont, but the east coast and quite frankly even the west and southern coasts. Legit change of pace in the area from the ho-hum. Arandas hits the ethnic mark but no sit down and the rest are just out of touch with money behind a bland and mislabeled menu. Chico's hits different because Chef Lay is from California and is in touch with the soul and vibe of the culture and food . He sources quality ingredients and follows authentic recipes true to the California low frills , filling and flavor centered fare . No stars if I could. The waiter was brainless. We asked for the WiFi password, the one he gives doesn't work. What did work was the open wifi that was under the former business name. We ordered 2 limeades. He brings one. We point out the online menu and get told that it is old. We order a Gordo Chicken Burrito and it had a bone in it. The waitress, was serving children while exposing the tattoo of a topless woman on her back. Instead of taking something off for finding a bone, they offered a free dessert that we had to tell him twice that we weren't interested in. And we were charged $56 dollars. They claim authentic Mexican. Nothing authentic about any of it. read more

Great food and hang out spot. I was in Montpelier and looking for something to eat so I decided to stop by and grab some tacos. the restaurant is located in an old bank with a real vault. There was also a free pool table to use while you wait for food. Overall the tacos were authentic and tasteful and the service was great. read more

Chico's Taco restaurant is fabulous! We spent 25 years in Phoenix and have been to many Mexican restaurants, both chain and family run. Chico's tops them all. From the home made chips and salsa to the carne asada burrito and classic margarita, it is all excelente! read more

I've been meaning to stop by and see what Chico's is all about for some time, so today on my day off, stopped in. The garage doors were open, it is still a wonderful 77 degrees outside, and the Vermont atmosphere right now is intoxicating, Chico's really plays well into this. The interior of the place is casual and fun, murals on the wall and decorations are so refreshingly different in a good way from the sterile every restaurant is the same type of atmosphere, clean and neat. Was running errands so didn't have much time, meal was served very quickly, huge burrito easily big enough for two people, which if you wanted could get you in and out for less than McD's, as it is it will provide me another meal this evening. The green salsa that was served with the burrito was amazing, really nice, fresh, added a nice mix to the burrito (chicken/bean/rice). Could have been a tad warmer temperature wise. Francis was at the bar/tables, very personable with a keen sense of humor. The drink menu looked like they served some great Margaritas, but that wasn't for me today. Very friendly laid-back dining. Great place for people to come together. Will definitely try again. Best part is, after eating the meal, I felt great, good clean eating food that is not only good for the soul, but good for your body, way better than the fried food served across our state. Have done takeout once and was very impressed with the food. We don't have great Mexican food in central VT as a general rule (Aranda's is pretty good though) so I'm so happy Chico's is here now! Flavorful and not bland. The meat is soooo good, like quality BBQ style meat. Looking forward to going back again. Only area for improvement: make it more obvious to customers where they should go for takeout pickup as it was a little confusing upon entering. read more

We walked in in a quiet weeknight and were immediately told that we could not be seated for five minutes due to them being short staffed. We were not invited to sit at the bar. We were left alone by the door. We went to the bar and thought we could have a drink while waiting. The bartender never acknowledged us, even though there was only one other person at the bar. We waited for ten minutes and left. We did see the menu and the prices were very high. It was a very sad experience. Unfortunately it is the kind of experience that will keep us from ever going there again. read more

I thought I had already submitted a review but apparently it never went through. The usual "Operator Error" I guess? Due to recent knee surgery I haven't been to Chico's in 6 weeks. Right before that I went there 4 times in 5 days. At that time Andrew was a 1 man show, which probably made me want to patronize the place even more, even if the food was only mediocre. Everything I ordered has been delicious. Fresh ingredients, served simply and quickly by a really top shelf chef that is currently doing his own thing. The atmosphere has a funky roadhouse vibe and I loved the artwork on the walls. As a HST / Ralph Steadman fan I was intrigued to talk with Andrew about some of those works hanging up in frames. I went with a buddy for breakfast and the tacos were delicious. Lunch and dinner was more of the same, nothing but good things to say about any of the things I ordered. The Posole' and the fish tacos were favorites, but there was nothing on the menu I didn't enjoy. When he first opened the place Andrew was working 12 hour days, and I know that could be overwhelming so I'm suggesting people lighten up and give the place a chance and a second chance. Pretty sure he's hired some help by now. I'm looking forward to hobbling in soon for a great meal from a hard working chef. Can't wait until warmer weather when the place is wide open. Service was extremely slow and had to ask twice to get basic water. Servers didn't know basic service. Food was ok but not great. Expected more from all the hype. read more
