I think this was legitimately the worst food I've ever had in my life, and I tried four items.

Finally made it to Chico's, large fast food building that can handle a crowd. Order at the counter, food brought to you was prompt had the rolled tacos they are deep fried and placed in a watery tomato bath with a handful of finely shredded cheese on top. A plastic fork is useless on the taco, pick it up and eat it with your fingers it's messy ,the filling reminded me of some old school flavor from Mexico. By the way it's cash only,I guess that's the reason for the security guard. But very friendly staff. read more

Gross. Tacos were very gamey and burnt tasting. Totally disappointed since we drove down here from San Antonio and stopped on the way to Seattle. Not to mention those tacos have a nasty funky smell. A long-standing El Paso tradition for many generations! Chico's is one of those places that people either love it or hate it. Hadn't had a chance to visit throughout 2020's pandemic so getting the opportunity to visit in 2021 was nice! They're famous for their rolled tacos (3 for a single/6 for a double), swimming in red sauce and covered in shredded cheese. For those that prefer a little more spice, green chili sauce is available to add. Most people pair the tacos with a side of fries too - my preference is to eat the fries with the extra sauce & cheese. Yum! The menu has other options available, if the tacos aren't your thing - hot dog (more of a chili dog sandwich), cheeseburgers, bean burritos, grilled cheese sandwiches, etc. read more

"Oh you're going to El Paso??" "Go to Chico's Taco!" "Yeah! Chico's Tacos is a staple in El Paso!" "You MUST get the tacos...and the hot dog." After consulting with two local El Paseons, I was convinced. Chico's for lunch and I was darn excited. The husband and I were passing by and ordered the tacos and the hot dog to share. Hot dogs at a taco place? I know, but it was recommended! The hot dog was good y'all. It was a hot dog sliced in half, on a hamburger bun with mustard and chili sauce. Hard to mess this up in my opinion, but good nonetheless! Now the famous Chico's Tacos. The ones that were apparently featured on the Food Network. The one that many Yelpers rave about. I didn't get the hype. These tacos are actually beef flautas that are covered by a mound of cheese and flooded in a spicy watery red salsa (it was like soup) along with a dollop of salsa verde. They are crunchy if you don't wait for the watery red salsa to soak into the "taco." They are quite near flavorless (the cheese really is the only thing with flavor here). It was, overall, a big let down. If these just had any flavor at all, I could imagine it being pretty good. BUT, it is something you should try for yourself when you're in El Paso! We didn't enjoy the food, but we really did enjoy the experience of eating at one of EP's best known food spots. read more

Greasy sauce! Leaves the roof of your month with that greasy feeling. The rolled tacos are like frozen ones that just dumped again in a frier. (Hence the greasy feeling) This place was once good in the 1980s maybe or even before that but now it's just gross. The locations are old. R has family in Texas, and he remembered going to a restaurant called Taco Cabana many, many, many moons ago, to get their rolled tacos. While we were on our return road trip back to Atlanta 9 weeks ago, R found a chain named Chico's Tacos and discovered they have rolled tacos similar to the ones etched in his mind. We came to see if the rolled tacos were the same and I wanted to taste these things. Parking was easy to find in the free parking lot, even though there were many cars already in the lot. We walked in and this restaurant has a lot of tables, and many customers were inside enjoying their food. There are so many tables that we were able to distance ourselves from each other. There was a short line at the order counter and we didn't have to wait long before we were ordering. The employee who took our order was nice and friendly, and explained that the rolled tacos are in a red sauce. We ordered 6 rolled tacos. All of the rolled tacos are beef. The menu doesn't really have that many items on it: rolled tacos, hamburgers, burritos, fish fillet, hot dogs, fries, grilled cheese sandwich, cheese sandwich, and Coke products. That's all! Our order was called out, and I went to the counter to pick it up and took the food back to the table. It looked a little odd to see rolled beef tacos, which are essentially taquitos sitting in a watery red sauce with a thick layer of shredded cheddar cheese. I took one of the rolled tacos from the top and it was covered with melted cheddar. The corn tortilla was nice and crispy, and everything had a good flavor. However, the next two rolled tacos that I had were soggy and soggier, which was not pleasant. The tortillas had lost their crispness. The second rolled taco that I ate was barely held together, and the third rolled taco didn't have a chance at staying in one piece. It was so soggy that I had to use a fork. So my evaluation on the rolled tacos is that they have good flavors, but skip the red sauce ... unless you grew up on this item. In the latter case, enjoy the red sauce. Buyers beware. Female manager is charging random prices for items. The prices on the wall are incorrect. I asked if they were correct and she said yes and got very nervous. At first she tried to say it was because of taxes I explained we don't charge 30%+ tax on food that's what some of the items were marked up, then she claimed that there is a hidden fee for every item to go. There is a different price list taped up behind the counter. I was over charged by at least $7 for my order. Can you imagine if everyone is over charged at least $5. That means they are "stealing" $1000's a day. Bad business. Too bad the employees are stealing money, this was a good restaurant. She even took my receipt and tossed it in the trash. Don't believe me, add up your items next time you visit. I ordered 3 doubles Extra cheese 1 regular hamburger 2 fries Should have been $32.70 with tax (rounded up to 10% tax which TX is supposed to be 8.25 max) at most with the to go fees of .12 + .10 per item which was added, let's just say $1.32 to round up = $34.02. Charged $40.96 - $34.02 = $6.94 where is this amount going x number of customers per day. Owners don't lose your business because of people like this. Did I mention they never gave me my hamburger. When I think of Chico's I think of tradition. I remember being a kid and going to the Chico's on alameda and the one on McRae. My mom likes coming here so o always get the fries with the sauce and she gets the single. It's surprisingly clean and the staff has definitely gotten friendlier. The service on my 12 singles to go order was the worst! worker was bothered when i pointed out that i was short 2 of the taco sauce cups and the green sauce was completely left out. With hesitation i was brought the 2 red sauce and ONLY one very small cup with green sauce, then i let the worker know i was not given enough cheese, she asked a male worker what he thought, he lifted the bag that was less than 1/4 full and said it was enough. I told him i disagreed on these portions for 12 orders, regardless... disappointed i took my food & left. When we sat to eat at home SURE ENOUGH...we were very short on the green sauce and definitely on the cheese. I first heard of this on the TV show "Texas Eats", it was presented as a "must see" if in El Paso, so we're in El Paso, and we went. Pros: Retro 70'sh looking counter type place with red old-school fast-food booths Very cheap, and good value Cons: Cash only The "famous" sauce is pretty watery, and adding cheese to the sauce smothered tacos really isn't that awesome. So horrible I had to download Yelp to try and share it with as many people as possible. I found a GLOB of HAIR in my food. I have NEVER in my life come upon something like this when dining out at restaurants and I have never had this problem at any other Chico's Tacos location, just this one. A family member of mine had gotten the rolled tacos and immediately discovered what looks to be a glob of hair, like what you would find in a drain, stuck in the taco with a glob of cheese melted into it. All of my family is thoroughly DISGUSTED with this experience and will never be back to this location and unfortunately any other Chico's Tacos location as this was an absolutely SICKENING experience. Luckily we were able to get a full refund, but I hope this quality control issue will be taken seriously by the staff since I failed to sense any urgency regarding this issue. Even when I go long stretches of time (I'm talking years) without Chico's eventually Chico's catches me at the right moment and my taste buds have an out of character craving. In all honesty though, Chico's tastes like high school and regret... sometimes it's an agreeable flavor. Sometimes. Yesterday was 'sometimes'. I somehow went from searching for sushi near my next meeting to saying "F it, I'm going to Chico's." And how one gets from sushi to Chico's is still unclear to me, but it happened. I was surprised that there were some changes since the last time I was there (i.e. a thicker bowl and a slightly better quality of cheese), but this million dollar company still only accepts cash. WTF? How is that possible?! I still think this is something that needs to be investigated. I ordered my signature single with extra cheese (never a double... if you want six tacos you get two singles so you have the proper ratio of taco to cheese and sauce), fries, and a large Dr. Pepper. I grabbed some packets of salt, threw three cups of the green salsa on my tacos, and grabbed an extra salsa for direct fry dipping. This. Is. The. Way. You. Do. It. Fries are of the frozen persuasion, but they fry them up right and again they're great when you dip 'em in the salsa or sop up the red sauce/green salsa/cheese mixture left behind when you've finished your tacos. The tacos are eh. Not great and honestly the red sauce (still) didn't taste like much without the addition of the salsa. Yes, you can definitely find a better quality of these taco concoctions elsewhere, but if you want that feel of nostalgia and want to see what all the hype is about, go here first. This is the newest Chico's (that's still open) so it doesn't have that dark, neon-lit kind of feel to it that you find at the originals. And the location is pretty big. Don't expect amazing customer service. You order, you sit down, they call your number, you pick your food up... that is the extent of any interaction you'll have with staff. Chico's is by no means the best El Paso has to offer, but it's a kind of cool experience if you're feeling adventurous. I go every once in a blue moon and this location definitely lives up to the Chico's standard. Give it a try... as I'm sure you've been told, you'll either love it or hate it, there's no in between. *Questions to ask yourself to figure out if you'll love it or hate it (by the McDonald's standard): 1.
