Coming from an old…read moreSouthern boy, I'm usually pretty picky about this dish, but I have to say it wasn't too bad at all. The biscuits were hearty, the gravy had good flavor, and the portion size was satisfying. No, it's not quite like sitting down in a country diner back home, but for Montana, it definitely hit the spot. The staff was friendly, service was prompt, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. If you're looking for a solid breakfast before heading into Yellowstone, the biscuits and gravy are worth a try.

My husband wanted a biscuit breakfast sandwich with sausage - they were out of biscuits. So I got him a bagel breakfast sandwich with sausage instead. I ordered sausage links for my baby, I asked if they had any kind of fruit I could buy for my baby. They said no that they only had bananas for smoothies - which is odd being a place that sells fruit smoothies... For myself I ordered a croissant sausage breakfast sandwich and a mango madness smoothie). My mother in law wanted a lotus energy drink - but they were out of lotus syrup. A few minutes later the gal that rang us up came to our table and let us know they were out of sausage for breakfast sandwiches. Asked what we wanted instead. They still has sausage links, so that's what we had on our sandwiches. When our food was ready they brought everything over except the sausage for my baby - which they clearly forgot to make cause that was a long wait till it arrived (5 or more minutes). Putting food in front of a hungry baby and none of it is for him is not a good idea lol. My husband ended up giving him his sausage and wait to eat his sandwich till they brought more over. I also gave my baby some of my smoothie - the smoothie was good. So, out of several items, and forgot part of our order.... Just seemed a bit chaotic. Food and smoothie was good and the people who work there are nice.

We had Katen wait on us for dinner and she was fabulous! She was kind, great with our kids and a very thoughtful server. She made sure we had everything we needed and had great dinner suggestions. We added a small side of steak to split for our kids and she made sure each kid had enough and even had the steak cut up. She talked to us about our up coming trip and was very engaging. We were delighted to have her the following day when we dined for dinner. Everything came out perfect, she checked on us multiple times and was extremely accommodating to our wants and needs for dinner. The following morning we dined for breakfast and had Kendra wait on us. She was also amazing. All of the staff must be fabulous because each time we were there we were blown away by the friendly, helpful and thoughtful staff. Kendra not only provided great table service, but she was a delight to talk with. She gave insight to our trip and gave great suggestions for future trips. We were one time crunch and she made sure we ate and got to our next destination as quick as possible. Thank you both again for such a great stay and thank you for taking the time to talk with us!

They had NBA finals and World Cup on while we were there. The place feels cozy and they welcome everyone. We both ordered fish dishes. The walleye and the honey salmon. Food came out after a while and we really liked our dishes. The fish was cooked perfectly and came with a nice, flavorful sauce, instead of just some bland veggies. Overall we liked the walleye a little bit better. We were happy to find some items that are at least a little bit on the healthier side. Our waitress super friendly and quick with everything we required. Would definitely come back here.

Think bean nachos but with fries instead of tortilla chips. The kids liked the chicken strips and fries quite a lot. I loved the bison burger, and was glad I ordered it cowboy style with bacon and grilled onions. The hunters pie (like a shepherds pie but with green beans, mashed potatoes, pulled pork, bacon and cheddar cheese) was also really good. Very cute cowboy decor and nice classic country music playing. It was fun.

Our second visit here was Monday evening and the food, service and overall experience was not very good. On Thursday we were given a children's menu, on Monday none was offered. We asked for the BBQ chicken sandwich for my 1 year old, but asked for just the chicken, no bun and the sauce to be on the side. Was served exactly as we asked. On Monday it was served just as it is on the menu, we had to send it back as my baby won't eat any sauce on chicken. Which is why we wanted it on the side so we can continue to try to introduce sauce to him but also get him to eat some plain chicken. On Thursday I had the pulled pork sandwich and fries. It was great. On Monday I had the quesadilla with barbicoa beef. The meat was excellent, but the bottom side of my quesadilla was soggy, not crispy at all and wet when it was served to me. On Thursday my husband had the Dizzy buffalo burger with the cheese curds, he liked it. On Monday he had the Westerner sandwich, he said it wasn't great. He ended up only having a couple of bites. I'm not sure what the difference was, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that hopefully they were just having an off night. Round out the two visits at 3 stars. I'd give them another shot if we visit again since one time was a really great experience.

Chico Hot Springs

Chico Hot Springs was a highlight of our nine-day, four-state road trip through Idaho, Utah,…read moreWyoming, and Montana...and there were a LOT of highlights. Originally booked as a single night, post-Yellowstone reprieve (I mean, looking at hot springs all day long makes you want to soak in one, right?!), we ended up extending our stay another day, because of how much we all (my wife and I, plus our two toddler tons) loved this place! The hot springs alone is worth the price of admission: two pools, one smaller and warmer, the other larger and cooler (but still warm enough that there is no temperature shock when shifting between them), with a poolside bar window where you can order cocktails from the attached saloon...that's pretty hard to beat! There's also an attached restaurant, but we didn't get a chance to check it out, as it was closed by the time we returned to the hotel both nights. There's also the aforementioned saloon, which is open until 11-ish every night (basically, until everyone staggers out), with a wonderful, conversational bartender whose name I wrote down, and shamefully lost, but he was warm, welcoming and engaging: a true gem in an already glittering establishment. He also pointed out their absolutely ABSURD wine selection, indicating the presence of a fabulously stocked wine vault somewhere on site, for those with expensive tastes (not me; I'll stick to my whiskey!). Rooms are rustic, but comfortable, including the beds. We stayed our first night in a private cabin up on the hill, with two small bedrooms (queen beds in each) and a bathroom. Our second night, all the cabins were filled, so we ended up in a room in the main lodge, on the second floor, which had its own aesthetic perks, as the whole building feels like an inn from a previous century (which, technically, I guess it is...but it feels even older than that, in all the good ways). It's probably also haunted. We hope it is, anyway! Beyond all these incredible features I've mentioned, there's actually many, many more: an on-site gift shop / café, open from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM every day; there's a day spa up on the hill; you can book horseback rides from the stable near the gift shop; there's a playground for the littles behind the private garden, which appears to be tended by the James Beard award-winning chefs that make the fantastic dining hall an excellent choice for either breakfast/brunch (a buffet at $22/person, and absolutely worth it), or a truly incredible fine dining service in the evening. All those things, and I'm sure I'm probably forgetting or overlooked something. In short, Chico Hot Springs has something for everyone, young or old, rustic or extravagant: our little sons LOVED the hot springs (as did we, of course), but there's so much more to love here, that it has made a lasting impression on us all. Montana has never had much of a draw for city-slickers like my wife and I, but after our stay here, our ignorance has been thoroughly rectified. VERY recommended.

We also got a delicious slushy from the Saloon which we took to the pool as we relaxed. The two pools of varying heat were really nice and despite the crowds had plenty of space. If I lived locally for around $15 I would get the day pass. The full bed, which was not super comfortable, was also tight for my wife and I to share and the room in general was on the smaller side. Overall, it was clean but basic and it seems like you may be paying more so here for the location. The setting is beautiful and we enjoyed walking around the property. If you have the budget, you may want to consider upgrading to one of the Oregon trail style wagons or one of the lodges on site. We knew we'd have a more budget friendly room with shared bathroom arrangement so the rustic traditional lodging did meet our expectations (and seems more affordable than staying in Bozeman by comparison). At the restaurant we tried the classic caesar salad, Beef Tenderloin Tips, and the special of the sea scallops. The salad comes with giant leafs that were a bit difficult to eat but it was tasty. The beef and the scallops were also good, although the latter were unsurprisingly very expensive. Despite the pomp and circumstances of their famous "flaming orange" (which is indeed impressive), we aren't big orange/chocolate fans among other elements of this dessert so instead we got a delicious ice cream cake to go. We took the desert to the saloon next door to see the local band which was fun.

We stayed in the covered wagons. First of all, they do not look like the picture. Only one has a fire pit, and that wasn't either of ours. There is a group fire pit by the bathrooms, but they wouldn't even help us with smores supplies or sticks. You are in the middle of nowhere, so if you forgot something, don't expect them to help. The area around the wagons is very overgrown. They had a horseshoe pit that was hard to see because there was so much grass. Not that it would matter, they didn't have any horseshoes there. The wagons themselves had good mattresses and comfortable bedding. However, they only had air conditioner available and no heat. Kind of pointless in the Montana mountains. I'm glad our weather was mild while we were there. We checked in at 6:30, and asked when the pool side grill would close. They said after 9pm. We got on our swimsuits, and headed to the pool, only to find the grill closed and it wasn't even 7! I went to the front desk to complain, and all they said was the girl who told us was wrong. So I asked about eating in the restaurant but they said they stopped taking reservations at 4 PM even if they have any openings. So, that left us feeding five kids in a saloon. There were only two saloon workers that night. They did their best, but you could tell they were very understaffed. It made the whole experience pitiful. It is not like you have another choice of a place to eat when you're that far from town. Overall, Chico is an overpriced waste. Save your money and go to one of the other cool places in the area. The Hot Springs at Yellowstone Hot Springs is better than the Chico pool anyway.
