Chico Hot Springs was a highlight of our nine-day, four-state road trip through Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana...and there were a LOT of highlights. Originally booked as a single night, post-Yellowstone reprieve (I mean, looking at hot springs all day long makes you want to soak in one, right?!), we ended up extending our stay another day, because of how much we all (my wife and I, plus our two toddler tons) loved this place! The hot springs alone is worth the price of admission: two pools, one smaller and warmer, the other larger and cooler (but still warm enough that there is no temperature shock when shifting between them), with a poolside bar window where you can order cocktails from the attached saloon...that's pretty hard to beat! There's also an attached restaurant, but we didn't get a chance to check it out, as it was closed by the time we returned to the hotel both nights. There's also the aforementioned saloon, which is open until 11-ish every night (basically, until everyone staggers out), with a wonderful, conversational bartender, Kelby, who was warm, welcoming and engaging: a true gem in an already glittering establishment. He also pointed out their absolutely ABSURD wine selection, indicating the presence of a fabulously stocked wine vault somewhere on site, for those with expensive tastes (not me; I'll stick to my whiskey!). Rooms are rustic, but comfortable, including the beds. We stayed our first night in a private cabin up on the hill, with two small bedrooms (queen beds in each) and a bathroom. Our second night, all the cabins were filled, so we ended up in a room in the main lodge, on the second floor, which had its own aesthetic perks, as the whole building feels like an inn from a previous century (which, technically, I guess it is...but it feels even older than that, in all the good ways). It's probably also haunted. We hope it is, anyway! Beyond all these incredible features I've mentioned, there's actually many, many more: an on-site gift shop / café, open from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM every day; there's a day spa up on the hill; you can book horseback rides from the stable near the gift shop; there's a playground for the littles behind the private garden, which appears to be tended by the James Beard award-winning chefs that make the fantastic dining hall an excellent choice for either breakfast/brunch (a buffet at $22/person, and absolutely worth it), or a truly incredible fine dining service in the evening. All those things, and I'm sure I'm probably forgetting or overlooked something. In short, Chico Hot Springs has something for everyone, young or old, rustic or extravagant: our little sons LOVED the hot springs (as did we, of course), but there's so much more to love here, that it has made a lasting impression on us all. Montana has never had much of a draw for city-slickers like my wife and I, but after our stay here, our ignorance has been thoroughly rectified. VERY recommended. read more

We stayed one night in Chico in the main lodge. The room is basic but nice, no AC but comfortable. We made reservations for dinner at the main dining area. It was SO good. Warm bread and butter and the burrata dish to start. We ordered the almandine trout and Oscar steak for our mains. Both were delicious, steak cooked perfectly medium. We had the crème brûlée for desert. We had great service and great food. I would definitely come back, especially when the weather is cooler for the heated pools. read more

The restaurant of Chico hot springs is really good! The steak is the best in Montana, I have heard. And I can see why! I don't know how they do it so well in such a short amount of time, they gave me fried ice cream, it was okay, I just think it wasn't my taste, the service was good! The waiter was nice and even funny! And the ambiance felt perfectional, dark amd quiet... for the morning anyway, the food is just as good in the morning than it is at night, for one thing, I think that the lines for the food to serve it yourself was kind of chaotic, but I think it was a good idea. The pool is very fun, there is plenty of room to swim and it's a good place to practice, and the hotel! It's cozy. Though when I was there it looked like the windows hadn't been washed in a pretty long time. But Overall I love Chico hot springs! Probably my favorite place to go on a trip! read more

One of the best filet mignon dishes I've ever had! Aside from Beverly Hills and Las Vegas steakhouses I've been to, this place is absolutely incredible. Maybe it's the Wyoming beef? Wonderful crust and so tender it melted in your mouth. French onion soup - so so flavorful and incredibly delicious! I couldn't stop eating this. Kids prime rib - Impressive cut for the little guy! Great value and perfectly prepared. I was so happy to have an option other than hamburger/hotdogs, chicken nuggets or Mac and cheese. The Chico garden supplies their daily vegetables and the green beans were the freshest I've ever had! (I still need to get to French Laundry) The bread gets an honorable mention as well. We were looking for a quiet romantic and rejuvenating spot to soak. The atmosphere of the cabin we had is perfect. The pool is super crowded, very loud, and many adults being loud and drunk. Lots of kids, screaming, playing games in the pool with very little oversight. If my kiddos were younger and I was still into partying, this place is great. Not so much for a quiet escape though. Is it pricey? Sure. Is it worth it? Yes! The food here is always an experience. Service is impeccable. Let's be honest, they don't have to be excellent, the hotel audience is a bit captive considering there aren't many nearby food options, but I'd still want to eat here even if there were. I ordered filet tips and they were perfectly cooked, tender enough I didn't even need a knife. Veggies were fresh and well seasoned. Only complaint was that I would have liked a few more green beans (because they were really good)! The portions are reasonable, especially since there's nowhere in the rooms to store leftovers. Chico has changed hands recently and I was surprised how dated and old fashioned it still is in spite of it being part of a corporate group now. Make reservations asap... and if they have the halibut, you can't go wrong (even if you don't usually like fish!). They truly believe in presentation when preparing food... Often plates are adorned with edible, locally grown flowers... If not, guaranteed it will look beautiful! The waiters and waitresses have always been extremely attentive, and the place has fantastic ambience... Even when it's crowded, I don't ever recall hearing the other people talking... For years The Dining Room at Chico Hot Sorings was the hands down best restaurant in the Big Sky Country. In the new century it has gained some worthy competitors. But for my money the Dining Room remains the place for a laid back, casual yet completely fulfilling dining experience--and over the course of three nights this summer, I was able to try a range of different options from its well thought out menu. First night I went with old and new items. The old items were the cocktails. If there are better bartenders in Montana I haven't found them yet. Every night the drinks were wonderful. Geez the short rib bison ravioli in a rich cream sauce was almost an entree itself. The halibut was perfectly prepared. Flaky and moist. The second night was what I called Chico old school. Shrimp cocktail--bone cold, great sauce and large serving. Then their new take on Caesar salad--one of the best and freshest I have ever had. Then the prime rib. Chico's early reputation was all tied into their beef--and this throwback dinner was perfect. The last night was centered on the pork chop. Wow, grilled perfectly but so tender. Amazing--maybe my favorite of the three nights especially paired with the Oregon Pinot noir. The wine list is just excellent. Here is the perfect place for the ultimate boozy dinner. Desserts? I stick with two regulars from 40 years ago--the flaming orange and the mud pie. Service? Over the top. Always good, never ever distracted even when short staffed. Today is the day after we just had THE BEST meal of our trip, maybe the best of the last few years, and we can't stop talking about it. I haven't been to Chico Hot Springs in about 15 years and luckily the menu and the resort haven't changed much. Last time I visited I remember having the Beef Wellington for two, which was so memorable I mentioned it to my wife before we were seated. Lindsey, our server, was friendly, helpful and fast. She allowed for a bit of personal connection and discussion, despite the busy dining room. We ordered a bottle of red wine to compliment our meal. If you enjoy wine, this place literally has something for everyone. With the list ranging from 20$ bottles to $900 bottles, you can definitely find something you'll enjoy. We had the amazing trout appetizer with a garden cream cheese, capers, and tomato. Jaw dropping. Each meal comes with little crisp bread sticks, whipped butter, and a loaf of hearty white bread. Excellent for soaking up the sauces of any of these courses. For dinner I had a filet mignon, with a Gorgonzola topping and a port wine reduction. On the side was a layer of potatoes, think gorgeous scalloped potatoes, and perfectly cooked green beans. My wife had a Steelhead trout, with shaved snap peas over a bed of brown rice. Both of these were magic and we each enjoyed every bite. Then came the magic of dessert. Save room for this. I repeat. Save room for this. They have a desert that is a "44 year tradition". They hollow out an orange and coat the inside with a chocolate shell. Then they refill it with Wilcoxson's vanilla ice and then top it with a orange whipped cream topping. Then. Wait for it. They bring it out on a blazing hot frying pan, fill the pan with a high prod liquor, and light that thing on fire! Yup it crisps the outside of the cream, warms up the orange which is then placed on a beautiful plate table side. This dessert was perfect. Absolutely perfect. We also had a chocolate creme brûlée with a coriander crumble. This dessert, also beautiful. These two desserts ended our meal with bang and left us smiling! The price point for this meal compared to the dining counterparts in Portland, ME, was shocking. This meal would have easily cost over $200 on one of the coasts, but Chico is keeping up with mountain prices and it was $140. For 3 high quality courses and a bottle of wine, we got a great deal. Beware! They have recently instituted a $50 per person cancellation fee. This was not a case of no-show. I tried to cancel, in person, the morning of the reservation. They were not cooperative and kept doing that thing businesses do lately: it's our policy. I'm sorry- when you're dealing with human beings, especially travelers, life happens and plans necessarily change. Just because big city restaurants have a policy to charge for cancellation doesn't mean Chico Hot Springs can get away with it. read more

The writing was in the wall that this wasn't going to be a great experience. Firstly, with a nearly empty dining room they refused to seat most of us while we waiting on our youngest child to change after the pool. Then during our salads and kids meals, none of the glasses were refilled or cleared. Finally, after waiting over an hour for our meals, we had to leave as it was well past our kids bedtimes.
