So I finally had a return visit to try their chicken and the ribs. I ordered online for pickup at specific time, but got there and still had to wait another 10+ minutes as they made the food. Only one person was working unfortunately when I stopped in to pick up the food. The staff was friendly and nice. The chicken was good, reminded me of the old Korean street fried chicken. The chicken was brined and seasoned very well, juice and moist. I loved that crispy skin of the fried chicken. The only disappointment - small chickens! Do they use cornish hen? Man, they need to link up with Walmart for those super duper sized chickens!! :) The ribs were decent, nothing to write home about. Their fried mushroom and onions were decent as well. Was actually going to get Popeye's in the same center but because their service was so horrible we left before finishing our order. Saw Chicken Shack earlier so decided to try it. Service was super friendly and attentive. I got 2 orders of tenders with fries. Since I opted out of a drink they threw in an order of potatoes. Just like their logo says do NOT expect fast but expect fresh. Because service was so good I didn't mind the wait. Food was hot and fresh. Fries were good, potatoes too. The chicken was crispy and juicy. Flavor was a bit lacking but just use some sauce. Would definitely go again to try other menu items. read more

When I first walked into this restaurant the ambiance was absolutely fantastic. It only took a few seconds for the workers to notice and let me order. I needed a menu so pulled my phone to look at it, and the kind gentleman let me find out what I wanted and gave me time. The food took around twenty minutes which is fine because this place isn't fast food. While the appearance on the outside may fool you, this place is not fast food. It take a while to make much like other restaurants. I got my food and it was heavenly, the potatoes were so moist and crispy at the same time. They tasted like cinnamon sugar which is always a plus to me. The ribs were nice and juicy and slathered in some sweet spippy barbecue sause. The coleslaw was good it came with sprinkled pepprika, and the diet coke was good. The food id considerably banging, however there is one negative thing about this place that prevents it from getting a five star rating. The price, I got six ribs for twenty dollars, four!!!! Thirty years ago, I lived down the street from the Royal Oak store. Back then and back there, Chicken Shack was always a treat. We lived out of state for the past 20-something years then moved to Ypsilanti. We were excited to introduce our sons to the chicken and broasted potatoes. It was not the same. The chicken was weird cuts. We could not tell by shape what each piece was. It was also overcooked. Nobody ate the potatoes. We chalked it up to a bad day. Our next visit we waited more than 45 minutes. It seemed like they were short-staffed. Again, the chicken was overcooked, leathery. We forgave because it's hard when you are down staff. The third and fourth tries, the chicken was again strangely butchered and a bit like jerky. We are not planning to try again. read more

As a long time, Chicken Shack customer being from the Eastside and being our go to for party catering and quick dinners going to the boat I was really disappointed in the last time I ordered. I have never ordered from the Ypsilanti location and walked in with hubby and the store was clean and the man at the counter appeared nice, so we proceeded to order a 12-pc tub and 5 pc fish dinner. That is our standard order every time, since I do not like fried chicken. I order and my bill came to $55 dollars, and we waited about 20 minutes and when we were called for the order, I asked if there was tartar sauce and the man behind the counter looked puzzled. I said for the fish, he said you did not order fish. I said I most definitely did, that is the only thing I order there. I asked him if her could just exchange the dinner and he blatantly said no. I was shocked. He said you ordered the chicken tenders, and they are too expensive to throw out and he would not make me a fish dinner. I explained calmly, I in no way ordered chicken tenders, I do not like them, I don't want the wrong order to keep them I want what I ordered. He firmly said that he would not remake them and that I was getting what I ordered. My husband is now at the point he says, I'll just buy an order of fish and at this point I said no, and we left. At this point we ordered $55 worth of food and I have nothing to eat. I figured it was a moot point to discuss this with this person anymore and that I would call their complaint line in the morning. This is where it gets really weird. I call their customer help line and hit the number for customer service. Called three times, no one answers. Leave a message we will get back with you soon. Left a message Friday, the day after the incident and then again on Tuesday the following week. I also wrote out a long and very detail message with copies of the receipt. To my shock, not a call or email back. Nothing. I can assure that this order is the last one I will ever order from Chicken Shack again. A company of this size does not answer their phone or emails. By the way the food was nothing special, the chicken pieces were tiny and weird shaped, difficult to determine what it was till you bit into it. I am assuming that the good recent reviews here are in response to a sign on their counter stating, leave them a good review and show them and you will get free food. read more

Finally tried this place. I'd give it 3.5 stars if that was an option. The chicken sandwich was really good- juicy, tender chicken. I was a bit underwhelmed by the side choices. I chose green beans and coleslaw. The green beans were definitely lacking seasoning- could have used some salt. Otherwise, the beans were crunchy and not mushy like a lot of other places. The coleslaw was fine- a bit too diced for my liking but tasted good. I'll be back soon to try the fish. Been wanting to try this location for some of the English Cod. Finally made it here to try them out. I ordered the 5 piece English Cod with a biscuit and I choose fries for my side. The cod portion seemed a little small from my past history at other locations, but it may be how it is now a days. Order a chicken tender lunch combo and was pleasantly surprised with the amount of food I had received. The chicken was overall good and had that crispy to it too. I had also gotten the potatoes that came with a good sauce to them. Overall was a good meal and would go back to again. Only downside to it was that it was almost $19 for just the one meal. When I got home The chicken was beige and soggy. The batter was not sticking nor crispy. Called and they looked me up and saw my order and I was told "when a new batch of oil is used sometimes the chicken won't get golden" and the I was told they "don't understand the problem if the chicken is cooked. " and additionally told we don't do credits and if you bring back all the chicken and your receipt we will remake it for you". At home I placed the chicken in the oven and it never browned. I was looking for a restaurant to cater an end of summer picnic for about 25 co-workers. I happened to be driving past Chicken Shack and thought to stop in. I was immediately greeted by the friendly manager there. He let me know he could gear the menu toward whatever I needed. He even gave me a few samples of chicken, ribShack fries, and slaw, and I was immediately sold after my first few bites. I ended up ordering chicken, ribs, slaw, potatoes and a few other sides, which went over super well at our picnic. The food was timed perfectly and still hot by the time it was served. Everything was tasty and we had so many compliments. I highly recommend this restaurant. We were really happy when they opened as we had enjoyed carryout from a branch in Utica a few years back. They're fast, provide curbside pickup, and the food is really good. We've tried the chicken (both normal and BBQ, and usually the dark meat bucket they offer), the broasted potatoes (yes, that's the correct word), onion rings, fried mushrooms, and coleslaw, and we've been very happy with all of it. Found them on Yelp. I was wanting fried chicken, but something more than KFC and Popeyes. When I drove up, I was a bit discouraged. It was going on 9 PM and the place was deserted. (They're open until 10 PM.) The crew had already begun cleaning and was sweeping the floors. Not very encouraging. Where are all the eaters???? I placed my order and sat down to wait. The cook behind the counter asked me if I wanted to sample their BBQ chicken while I was waiting for my chicken to fry. I said, sure, why not? More on that later. My order came out in reasonable time. Took it home (about 12 min) and it was still crispy when I started to chow down. 4 pieces. Meat was tender and juicy. Breast was huge and had some ribs attached. The thigh was perhaps the biggest chicken thigh I had ever encountered. Very good coating. Not heavy. A light crispy flour based coating. Quite a few onion rings came as my side. They were good, but nothing unusual. Got a side order of mushrooms. Same crispy coating as chicken and they came with a tasty, onion-y cream dipping sauce. Also got a small coleslaw. It was a very good, traditional fried chicken type of coleslaw. Chopped small and very tasty. Now to that 'sample' I was offered. The chicken leg I got was DELICIOUS. Their BBQ sauce is sweet and tangy. Not smoky. (I hate artificial smoke in BBQ sauce.) And they came with a sample of their special potatoes. Their specials potatoes are to die for. So crispy!!! Tried this place for the first time yesterday. We got a chicken bucket and 3 sides (potatoes, cole slaw, and onion rings.) The onion rings were fantastic. The potatoes were too greasy. They had good flavor, though, once we added a little salt. We have leftovers so I'm going to reheat/roast them in the oven to, hopefully, dry them out a bit. I needed to order catering for a grad party and on their website is the breakdown by party size with the cost, Just what I needed. It was all laid out for 25, 50, 75 & 100 people. I went in early to submit my order and the manager was able to adjust the quantities for the catering order to my preferences so that I could stay within my budget. We picked up the order that was properly packed in manageable tray boxes. I was really impressed, it arrive hot AND they also included all the serving spoons & tongs.
