Pretty good. Got the chicken and catfish which was fresh and good and the chicken was nice and crispy but the hush puppies were spicy. Fries were nice and hot and the biscuits are great, gravy was very flavorful. Took about 15 minutes to get our food but was fresh so service is was good. After driving nearly three hours from Dallas to Vernon I decided to pull over and break up the trip by spending the night. I had gotten a late start so it was nearly 10 when I pulled into my motel and too late to go look for some place to eat. The next day I was scouting out places to eat but some of them we're closing by the time I was heading out the door and others were closed on a Monday, the day it was. I found this place, the Chicken Shack, on the flyer the motel gave me and since I'm always game for fried chicken I decided to check it out. I actually thought it was the Chicken Express because that is the name on Yelp and Facebook. When I clicked on the website I was taken to the Chicken Express website and was reading about how the guy was from Michigan, which I am from. That was part of why I decided to go there. I got to talking with one of the owners and found out that they USED to be affiliated with Chicken Express but haven't been for 17 years when they decided to go independent. I will be notifying Yelp of the name change. I already notified them to remove the website because the lady told me the Chicken Shack has no website and no Facebook page. All that is for the other business, the chain. The atmosphere was pleasant in a fast-food sort of way, the chicken was excellent, the side of fried okra was about the best I'd ever eaten so I was really glad I got it. My meal came with a drink and I got some refreshing sweet tea which of course kept me awake till the early hours of the morning. Passing through town and overhead a conversation about the Chicken Shack so we thought we'd give it a try. Delicious chicken, nice and crispy and not greasy. Great food, not greasy at all. Everything was so good! The fried okra was amazing! The staff is very friendly.

Stopping by for lunch on a long car ride proved to be a somewhat regrettable decision. We both got a #1: Four chicken fingers, a side (fries and fried okra,) a biscuit, and a drink for $8.14 each. The sides were both blandly average, and the drinks were 3/4 ice. Chicken was very crunchy, but just reminded us of a blander Chicken Express. The biggest saving grace was the biscuit, it was buttery, flaky, and excellent! Overall, nothing was bad, just average with a few standouts. But while the price justified the quantity, the flavor just wasn't there. read more

We love trying local restaurants. This is truly a shack but don't let that fool you! The fried chicken tenders were delicious, tender and juicy with a crunchy coating. The okra was tasty and our girls loved the French fries and biscuits. My husband said the sweet tea was perfectly flavored. I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars because NO ONE working inside the restaurant had on a mask. We almost left because of this. It's July 2020 and Texas numbers are only climbing so to see a restaurant not protecting its staff and customers was shocking. read more

For one they do not take tax exempt. There is a medium height man who bad mouthed my mother as I was calmly explaining to an older woman about why it was NECESSARY for this business to have tax exempt but this man was talking to ANOTHER customer about my mother. This man needs to go back into training. He did not have to say ANYTHING at all. This was between that older woman and I. I showed her no disrespect and she didn't show any disrespect towards myself. However that man, did not have to say that about my mother. She was not rude. She was only inquiring about the business' tax exempt question. My mother is a disabled veteran and I believe she SHOULD not have been talked about that way, especially since that was her first visit to this restaurant. read more

Big fan! I love this place. We drive 50 miles one way to get here (when the craving hits) and we stop whenever we are passing through, even if we are not hungry we get some to take home. They have a small menu and everything is very good. I like that they also have Jalapeno's, pickled. Bring cash, they dont take cards. I would mark them down for that but we actually had to use a check one time and they took it, out of town and out of state! So a big fat 5 for customer service as well as great chicken and sides. read more

Great food at good price! Always hot and fresh! My boys are obsessed with their Chicken Tenders and Okra. I'm telling you the #9 will easily take care of a good size family & then some. Their chicken is the best in town & their sides. They have the BEST okra, mash potatoes, biscuits, jalapeno poppers, & the pies, its just beyond words!! If you like chicken done right. Wow- not sure what happened, but the food was no where near as good on my 2nd visit. Too much breading on the chicken tenders- they tasted old as if re-heated from previous day. Too much breading on okra. NO biscuits- though we paid for them in our combo, no break on the price, no offer for a free cookie or anything to compensate for us not receiving biscuits that were part of our combo. Not likely to make a 3rd visit- if I want subpar chicken I can go to chicken express- we loved this place the 1st time because it was great then....you guys need to go back to doing things they way you did them a few weeks back before other people become disenchanted too....so disappointed. :( read more
