A scoop of the Carol Classic with a pickle spear and mini frosted sugar cookie
    Eva S.

We got take-out lunch from Chicken Salad Chick, newly opened in Block 59. It's was good! My "scoop meal" (1 scoop of choice, 1 side) was about $12. My husband got a Chicken BLT meal was about $13 (sandwich, side or extra scoop) There are so many types of chicken salad to choose - this is a chicken salad lover's paradise. There is some lingo like "quick chicks" which are to-go cartons of chicken salad; so convenient! You have a DOZEN to choose from. If you're in-store, you can request samples. Also, when my husband stopped in to pick up our lunch, they were giving out red "Chicken Salad Chick" tote bags as a promotion. Here are some of their chicken salad options: 1) Barbie-Q "hickory smoked bbq" 2) Classic Carol "signature white meat, celery, mayo, seasoning" 3) Olivia's Old South "sweet pickles & egg" 4) Fancy Nancy "fuji apples, grapes, pecans" 5) Fruity Fran "grapes, fuji apples, pineapple" 6) Cranberry Kelli "dried cranberries, slivered almonds" 7) Lauryn's Lemon Basil "pecans, fresh lemon, basil" 8) Dixie Chick "onion lover's delight, only one with onions" 9) Kickin' Kay Lynne "buffalo sauce, ranch, bacon, cheddar, jalapeno, sriracha) 10) Sassy Scotty "ranch, bacon, cheddar" 11) Buffalo Barclay "craving wings? the choice for you" 12) Jalapeno Holly "diced jalapeno galore" For my "scoop meal" I chose a scoop of "classic Carol" and a cup of chicken poblano soup. My husband also chose "classic Carol" for his sandwich and a side of pasta salad. We wanted to try their classic before trying any other chicken salad flavors. We're already planning which ones to try next when we go back. For me, next up would be the "Fancy Nancy." For my husband, his choice would be the "Sassy Scotty." We couldn't wait to try this spot as soon as we found out they opened in Block 59. So many new restaurants opening in the area. We'll be back and will pick up a "quick chick" for more chicken salad!

Classic Carol Scoop, crackers, grape salad and broccoli salad

Chicken Salad Chick delivers the best chicken salad! It is tender and moist with a comforting flavor. I ordered the Classic Carol Salad. It is a basic chicken salad, but they have an extensive list of chicken salads to appease everyone. They offer a scoop meal with crackers or a sandwich scoop served on either white or wheat bread or a croissant. One or two scoops can be ordered. The meal comes with a side including broccoli salad, fresh fruit, grape salad (in a light creamy sauce with brown sugar and crushed pecans), pasta salad, mac and cheese, soup or chips. My personal favorites are the grape salad, broccoli salad and pasta salad. The grapes are fresh and large! The brown sugar and pecans complement them! The meals also include a pickle and a frosted cookie. It is a great price under $12.00! The employees are friendly and accommodating. It has a warm, cozy, Southern-style atmosphere.

I've been wanting to try this place since it first opened but didn't have the chance until just recently. Since I'm indecisive and picky about my chicken salad, I decided to try 2 scoops and added a third. Online ordering was easy, but the lady at the counter when I came in for pick up did not smile, did not speak, and sighed in an aggrieved manner when I said I had a pickup order. She walked over, grabbed it, set it on the counter and walked away. I'm only hoping she was having an epically bad day and this isn't how she always greets customers. Now for food. I ordered the classic, old south, and sassy. The Classic was just way too plain for me. The Old South is more what I consider a good, basic chicken salad. I'd order it again in a pinch. However the Sassy with bacon and cheese really surprised me. It was my fav of the three. My only food complaint was I needed more than the 5 packs of crackers I got, but for normal people that's probably enough. LoL

Stopped by for lunch. Great food again. Such great customer service. Owner brought out samples of their red velvet cake. Yummy! We really like this place. Come hungry--the portions are big!

I was going back and forth between a 3 and a 4 -Star review. Today was the grand opening. It was very well staffed, everyone was friendly and wait time wasn't terrible. The menu is vast, lots of choices. The sandwiches were delicious but the portion size on one of the sandwiches was a joke, it was served on a teeny tiny little croissant, I finished it in literally 5 bites, definitely not worth the $14 price. My wife's sandwich which was on white bread was much larger. I wouldn't recommend ordering one of the croissants if you're even remotely hungry, I'm still hungry after eating the croissant sandwich and a side of pasta salad. I posted a photo next to my car key fob for size reference. I'll definitely go back and give it another shot but hopefully the portion size is a bit more satisfying next time. Honestly, if the croissant sandwich was bigger I'd have left a 5-Star review.

I love that there are unique Southern dishes like chicken and waffles, Southern fried chicken, and shrimp and grits. The coffee is hot, strong and accompanied by cute little baskets with individual creamers. The pancakes are super fluffy and served with a warm bottle of syrup. I am not a big fan of hot sauces as I don't eat spicy foods but had to dip a bite of chicken in the jalapeno hot sauce. It was really tasty and a tolerable amount of heat. I look forward to returning and trying even more versions of waffle or egg dishes here.

The frappe was also really good. My friend ordered the avocado toast, which she liked, but her caramel macchiato was off at first it tasted mostly like milk with a little caramel. They did fix it though, so I'll give them credit for that. Only downside was she ended up feeling like she got food poisoning afterward. The egg on her dish had a thin film on it, so we're thinking it might not have been fully cooked, which is concerning. Service itself was good and the staff was nice. Parking was also easy, which is always a plus. Good food overall, but that situation definitely threw things off a bit.

Visited Southern Cafe (SC) for Father's Day. Understood it would be a longer than average wait but…read moregiven our previous positive experience, thought it would be worth it. When we arrived, there was no one else waiting and I'd guess that only 75% of the tables had customers. Couldn't have been more wrong in our decision as we waited for over an hour post ordering before we actually received our meal. This is the longest we have waited for breakfast... EVER. Anyone with kids knows having kids sit still and wait with minimal sources of entertainment is hard enough, then add hunger to the equation and it's a recipe for disaster. What could have made our experience better? 1 - Be transparent about your delays upfront -- Empower your diners to make a decision around whether they'd want to wait or not given how busy you are. Don't continue to seat customers when your kitchen is severely behind and hope diners don't notice. 2 - A small gesture goes a long way -- It would have been nice for SC to offer a couple of biscuits given the excessive wait. 3 - Don't add insult to injury... by bringing butter and ketchup 30+ minutes before the meal arrives. It added to the frustration that even my 7yo remarked "what are we going to do with butter, we have no food". They offered more water even when all our water cups were clearly full. Don't really understand how more water would make us less hungry? Looking at another recent 1-star review, I can see the same pattern as our experience. This restaurant clearly doesn't fail gracefully on busy days... and they don't seem to care either. At the conclusion of our meal, we didn't even get the typical "how was your meal" question from anyone. I guess they already knew.

To me, that's a big No, No. I would highly recommend Macarthurs or 6978 soul food restaurants instead. Delicious food, and the restaurants appreciate their patrons. Back story to my review of Priscilla's. Long story short, I am an African American woman, he was born and raised in Chicago westside. A couple years ago I relocated to another state, for work purposes. However, my family and friends are all in Chicago. I do return home to Chicago possibly 2-3x a year. When doing so, I try my best to spend my black dollars with black establishments. Priscilla's is one of those restaurants. I have property there in the west suburb close by. The 1st Sunday of August, I happened to be in town. I had my daughter to go and pick up a couple plates. I wanted some soul food. In preparation of this, she used Priscilla's website to directly order from them. This website even gave an estimated time the order would be ready! Boom! She headed out to pick up our merch. Why did she have to stand and wait in the restaurant for nearly a hour & a half for her order to be given to her. When she got home with the plates, why was the chicken Ice Box cold, with warm gravy poured on top. Everything that was paid for was a disaster!!! I've had issues with them before, and they resolved it, so I didn't think much of it. Although I was hungry, I gave them a call and left a voice mail. It's been two weeks, I'm still waiting on a call back from them. The utter disrespect of not even speaking with me. I even called a couple days later... Basically, I am going to file a complaint. It's not the money for me, it's the disrespect that has me offended. I'm now back out of town, over 2,000 miles away. They could have even offered credits for my daughter or a refund! Nothing!!! There's a saying, sometimes it's your own kind that will do you the dirtiest. Honestly as I think back on this. 1st Sunday is normally crowded at all restaurants in the black community. I think they may have run out of food, specifically chicken. If that was the case, just say that. Don't send me chicken that was in the back of the fridge from 3 days ago. Disgusting behavior. My money spends everywhere, but never again in this outdated dump! Believe me, I will file a couple of complaints. Even if I never get a red penny back, I want to alert customers, beware. Also check the temp of your food before exiting the place.

We arrived 20 minutes before our scheduled reservation, but we were seated within five minutes of arriving. The server, David, greeted us promptly when we were seated. He mentioned that if you're ordering appetizers, they should be ordered with the main meal. While we looked over the menu, water was offered. I ordered Blackened Catfish over brown rice and carrots. The catfish was tender and perfectly seasoned. My brother had grilled flounder with creamed corn. Like the catfish, the trout was tender and well-seasoned. The corn had a slight sweetness. Roger had Short ribs and mashed potatoes. The ribs were tender and did not need any sauce because they were seasoned well. We also ordered a side dish of Macaroni and Cheese. It was delicious! A mixture of Gouda cheese and other cheeses. Very creamy! The top layer cheese was baked perfectly! If you know, you know, it's all about the top layer of cheese The APPETIZERS: The Gumbo was spicy but delicious! You only taste the spice at the end . It's not overly spicy; it's just right. The fried chicken gizzards were tender but could have used a bit more seasoning. It was served over brown rice and gravy. If I'm not mistaken, there were maybe 8 or 9 gizzards. The fried green tomatoes were perfect! From the seasoning to the grilled shrimp on top. Oh yes, grilled shrimp with this delicious sauce drizzled over the tomatoes. 3 or 4 shrimp. They were delicious! I've never had fried green tomatoes served w/grilled shrimp--definitely a must-try if you've never had it. For dessert, pineapple upside-down cake with coconut cream on the side. It was soooo good! They could have removed the coconut cream, as it was not needed. And it was a shareable portion for 2-3 ppl. There were other desserts, such as Blueberry Cobbler, Key Lime Pie, and Vanilla Ice Cream. If you're in the Hyde Park area, give these folks a try Oh yeah, the Manager, Louis, was walking the floor. I spoke with him briefly From what I observed, it's a very casual dress code--jeans, shorts, blazers, etc. And I loved the quotes on the outside window of those who were killed, like George Floyd and Sandra Bland. This place was nice! The dining area was clean and decorated nicely. The choice of decor fit the overall scheme I look forward to visiting again, possibly next Spring.

We walked back out and found the door to the restaurant. Staff is warm and friendly and we were seated quickly. Our server was Robert and he was great! He gave his recommendations for which sides would go best with our meals and I felt they were spot on. They give complimentary bread and butter. It was warm and delicious. Hubby ordered the rib tips with fries, baked beans, and had the hot and mild barbecue sauce on the side. I ordered the 1/2 dark smoked chicken dinner with mac-n-cheese, spicy Cajun green beans, and spicy honey garlic barbecue sauce. I agree with Robert, that the sauce pairs very well with the chicken. The tips were tender and falling off the bone. He didn't care for the fries and loved the baked beans, even though they were a bit too spicy for him. My chicken was also very tender and I enjoyed the smokiness. The green beans had the right amount of spice although they were not as spicy as the baked beans. The mac-n-cheese was creamy. We were too full to order dessert. Maybe next time. This is a great neighborhood staple and will definitely be back.
