I went inside to pick up some chicken salad to go even though they have a drive through lane. I like to take my time in deciding what to buy. I knew they have several flavors of chicken salad and I couldn't remember which kind I got last time. I arrived well after 1 pm on a Thursday and there many parking places available right in front of the restaurant. They have a large refrigerator located just before the order counter with prepackaged containers of their various offerings. I chose a small size of the Olivia's Old South style of chicken salad. I looked hard at their egg salad, thought about it but didn't get one and then regretted it. The small size container says it serves two to three servings but I was able to make four sandwiches. Check out service was fast and the cashier asked if I wanted crackers. He gave me several packs of wheat crackers. As I was leaving, I noted that the dining room was nearly empty so I guess the lunch rush was over. There was one table occupied outside. The following day, Friday, my sister and I put the chicken salad on toasted white bread and we loved out sandwiches. I love the sweet flavor that the sweet pickles add. This is exactly how I make my own homemade chicken salad. The egg as an ingredient is also very complimentary to the flavor as well. The Olivia's Old South style is a very close match to my own homemade chicken salad which is great because I don't like cooking chicken ;-)

I have gone here twice now. I understand they are new and they have a lot of kinks to work out. The first experience I had was at the drive through. Nice staff taking the order--seemed to be very meticulously trying to get my order correct. I placed my order for the chicken salad scoop with crackers. Only because their menu was a little confusing. So as I was placing my order, I specifically told them I wanted the scoop with the crackers. I didn't want a sandwich since I was cutting the carbs. I personally thought the price was a tad high for what I was getting. Since I had never been there before, I just had to see what all the fuss was about. When I got home, ( yes, I should have checked my order before I left.) I discovered I had the sandwich instead. Ok, no matter--what about the taste, right? Well, I thought it was ok--not for the price I paid for it. Disappointed--but not giving up--they are new. They have many other chicken salad varieties so I decided that a second trip might be necessary. I did an entire month later. The next time, was about the same. Friendly staff taking the order. I ordered two different types of salads--the Dixie chick and the classic Carol. This time actually getting the sandwiches. And I did order just a scoop of pimento cheese as well scoop of the classic Carol which I did get! It says the scoop feeds approximately two. I'm not sure whether the meant two bites or two spoonfuls. Because there is NO WAY that's little bit feeds two grown adults, barely two children. We were heading out of town and I wanted to get our food to eat on the road without making any stops. Well, both sandwiches ended up being the classic Carol. I didn't have time to go back and correct it. I'm beginning to think they will give me whatever they want me to have, at this point. The classic Carol tasted the same. It's ok. The pimento cheese? I have had better in the grocery store. Sorry. I find it a little hard to believe that this franchise is making an ENTIRE business on the chicken salad. Especially, salads that are not diverse enough taste wise, to command repeat customers. Am I being a little snooty? Perhaps. I may or may not go back a third time. Debating.

Gotta give some of these new places that are just opening in Avon a little room for error, but all in all today was a great experience for our first time at this restaurant or any chicken salad chick. The decor in the dining area was really nice. The line was pretty long but it moved fairly fast and after we were done the manager came out to ask if everything was good and took our plates. The taste of what we tried today was great! Will def return to try some other flavors! They have bread and croissants to put the chicken salads on of course but I'm not into eating that much bread now, so it's great just to have it on the side in scoops!

If you know me and if you know my dining habits, then you're likely very surprised that I find…read moremyself a fan of Yats. I don't have a particularly adventurous palate. My body's digestive system isn't the greatest. I tend to go for familiar staples rather than risk-taking cuisine. I have weird texture issues and don't really love my flavors all smooshed together. So, why do I love Yats and why did I insist on finally visiting this Avon location as I wind down my time working on my father's Putnam County estate (one county west)? It starts with the service. It's not what I'd call gregarious. It's calm yet friendly, hospitable yet not smothering. As someone who is introverted yet social, I feel comfortable here. It then goes to the atmosphere. Every Yats I've been to has a stylish, warm vibe that combines culture with art and just the right amount of humanity. Then, there are the prices. There are only a couple price points for Yats (unless you do add-ons like beer). Pricing is simple, consistent, and you know you can get a good meal for a fair price. I guess I should also mention the food. I don't know. I hate smooshed foods. I hate odd textures. I love Yats. I was introduced to Yats with the Italiano, a concoction I don't see often on their chalkboard-written rotating menu that always lets people know which dishes are began, vegetarian, gluten-free, etc. My other "go to" option is the drunken chicken. Both have unique textures and smooshed flavors - yet, I love them. Every location I've been to is pretty darn accessible. Employees will assist if needed, though they won't assume (which I appreciate). This location is accessible, beautifully decorated, and as soon as you enter you can't help but feel like you've entered a cajun world smack dab in the middle of Avon. Yats, a mini-chain now in Indiana and Ohio, was started here (right on College Avenue). You used to see the owner pretty regularly - a little less common now with 14 locations, however, the New Orleans vibe is present at every location. Good food. Fairly priced. Pleasant atmosphere. Yep. I love Yats.

Unfortunately the food doesn't agree with me any more, guess it's an age thing, gives me heart burn. But I love the taste so occasionally I can't resist. It's familiar, family friendly and the broccoli cheddar casserole is like comfort food to me. The last time I was there I had an upset stomach after lunch but you never know for sure what the cause is unless you haven't eaten at all before hand. So we decided to give them another chance. Those honey butter croissants are quite enticing after all. Unfortunately, the Bourbon Glazed Salmon I usually order was undercooked and I couldn't eat it. I hate wasting food but I had to send it back. The service seems to get worse each time I've been there over the years. Not sure what is going on with the management but it seems to be lacking the leadership and skills required to run a successful restaurant. It makes me sad that I can't go back there anymore. I just won't risk getting sick and need more consistent service.

There were about 2/3 tables full, which is good for a Sunday. Our server Jason was friendly and good about keeping track of all our requests. They have mocktails! I got the Blushing Sangria. It was delicious and nicely fruity and not too sweet. I've never drank before, but my boyfriend said it tasted like the original kind. They have a pretty extensive beer list here, and many of them are local choices. For appetizer, we got the couscous Mac and cheese balls. These are pretty close in nature to arancini, but with more cheese. My main course was their weekend dinner special, with prime rib accompanied by white cheddar mashed potatoes and roasted asparagus. The prime rib was absolutely amazing, nice and tender and flavorful. The mashed potatoes were also great and are a very smooth consistency. For dessert, of course we had to get a pizookie! The triple chocolate delivers on its name. Served hot, it is well worth the wait after two courses of deliciousness. They have TVs around the bar area that have sports on. At the time, basketball and nascar had the most coverage. I wish they had the closed captioning on, since that makes it easier to tell what goes on if you're not right at the bar. The bathroom is kept clean there. My boyfriend and I are sure to come back on the weekday special going on, with select entrees and pizookies for $13 - what a deal! Hopefully this is sooner rather than later!
