We ordered from here on DoorDash, and it was pretty good. The macaroni & mashed potatoes were decent, and the chicken had good flavor. I feel it's hard to find a good fried chicken takeout place in San Antonio, all of them are so much alike. I can't speak much on the service or ambiance, but our food was yum. This team provided excellent service and I didn't even order food this time! Unfortunately, I had to drop in due to some car troubles. I went in to see if I could leave my vehicle there overnight and I met sweet Chelsea. Not only did Chelsea get that approved by management, she also said she had a testing device in her car that we could hook up to my car to see what was wrong with it. She then promptly went outside and tested my vehicle for me!! Chelsea, you are a savior!! Thank you for the unexpected genuine kindness. We need more people like you in this world. I'm usually not a person who posts negative experiences eating out, especially locally owned franchises. But I've had enough with this place. Thought I'd have fish for Good Friday...mistake. Ordered 3pc for $13.49. Totally expected this price, CE is always a little more expensive than other restaurants and knew that going in, no big deal. What I got was very thin and tough filets and no tartar sauce. I was asked if I wanted tarter or cocktail sauce at check out. I received neither. Had to go back and ask, the cashier began to charge me for it. Told her I got none with my meal, she gave me that look of disbelief. The confusion set in with the poor girl and managerial intervention was required. Fortunately there were grief counselors on site to help her manage the emotional trauma she endured from our interaction. Got the tartar sauce and was then ready to enjoy my lunch. Not only was it very thin but it was tough too. Couldn't cut it with the plastic fork supplied with my meal. As I stated, I don't like trashing local restaurants and I realize and appreciate their local civic support for local sports programs. I just won't pay a premium anymore when there are much better values for my dining out dollar, (Antler Cafe). Very disappointed in my choice today. Step up CE!!! read more

Chicken Express is my family's go to place for fried chicken. My husband is especially happy that this location has the spicy chicken tenders. Both types of tenders are flavorful without being salty or greasy. We've had the regular chicken pieces (drumsticks, wings, and breasts) but nothing beats the tenders in our house. I also like that they have have a variety of sides here that aren't common at other fried chicken places such as fried pickles. Now about this location in particular. First of all, this is the only Chicken Express I've seen with a drive thru, drive-in, and sit down area. I went through the drive in but from what I could see, the place was spotless. Second, I didn't know a fried chicken place could look so fancy!!! It's beautiful sitting on top of a big hill with Italian Tuscan style masonry. Which leads to the final point. This location is set off by itself on top of a hill. It's about 1/8 a mile away from all of the other stores and fast food on SH46. Be sure to have your eyes open and your GPS turned on or else you'll miss it. I highly recommend this place! read more

I'm so annoyed/mad. We were served BURNT FOOD. And I'm willing to bet they thought they'd be able to get away with it because we were drive-thru. After a 35 minute round trip, I unloaded my four kids from the car, got everyone ready for dinner, and discovered our burnt food. Anyone that has kids knows how much of a hassle it is to go anywhere. And going a half hour for food means there was 15-20 minutes of prep/fighting/looking for shoes, etc. It really sucks to make all this effort for BURNT FOOD. Needless to say, I didn't make the trip back to get a refund. That'd be another 45-60 minutes. I'll never, ever go to this place again. And I hope this review discourages others from going to this location. Anybody with this much disregard for their customers doesn't deserve to stay in business. read more

This has been our favorite chicken place since we moved to Bulverde, TX in 2020. I don't know if it's a change in management or some slacking workers, but the last 3 or 4 times we've gone, they have left out pieces of our order. This last time, I called them and they said they would put my name on a list so that I could stop back by and pick up the missing items. I get there and was told that my name wasn't on the list. Since the food in our last two orders was almost too salty to eat, we won't be back. There are other chicken places that are now as good as Chicken Express if not better. There's a lot to be said for getting the order right. SO frustrating to get home and the food isn't all that you ordered, especially if they won't make it right. read more

Love when I'm out this way because I get to eat fried chicken at Chicken Express :o) Tenders are juicy inside and crispy outside, tea is great, jalapeño poppers are amazing, cream corn nuggets are insanely addicting, I can never decide between the biscuits or the rolls (they're both fresh and super soft)... and the staff is always extremely friendly. They've got Chicken; but Express is not the case. Been here 4 times now and I've had it. Last time I even talked to the mgr. I had been waiting at the drive thru 25 mins since ordering. She said they were short handed and backed up. I asked why she couldn't tell folks that when ordering. Took almost 50 mins total to get food - and it was wrong and I had another 10 mins to wait to get it right. Around me some folks drove off in frustration. We eat here often and have never had a bad experience. The staff is friendly. Service is quick. We are fried chicken lovers and theirs is excellent, great quality, never greasy. Burnt Rolls and NO CHICKEN STRIPS! Spent almost 45 minutes trying to get a family order of chicken strips. Got home which is about a 25 minute drive and found 2 boxes of rolls NO CHICKEN STRIPS. Spoke to manager on duty for them to have a delivery made to us for dinner and was told they cannot do that. Ok so pay for UberEats? Nope. So we paid over $53.00 for burnt rolls. So at 8 pm in the evening it was too late to travel back up there...so they offered a refund but couldn't do it right away? Called store manager not at store and they stated they needed to review the video of employees mistakes. ? Still waiting...so after getting nowhere with refund, and nowhere with getting the food I called back and stated since they feel we are lying about this then we will be more then happy to bring all of it back up there and they can call the boss who needed to review his employees mistakes on video,because we all know our orders are always correct and always fresh, at that point they will have the "PROOF" they needed from us. Now I know what your thinking be glad people are working in fast food, everyone is human and it's just food. I agree! However, when you are told they need "PROOF" --really that is insulting. Did they not notice the box of chicken strips sitting on the counter? Food is not cheap and we are paying for the orders to be correct and timely. By the way Chicken Express manager that small brown bag in the back was completely full of ketchup packets and seasoning packets. The tenders and this location are half the size of tenders at other locations. Two cheese sticks per order is a rip off. Ok, got tenders last week and the same story. They are half the size at this location than the one in New Braunfels. Tonight, we had a big order that included tenders and they left them out all together. Most places have "greasy "chicken but not here - nothing is greasy - not the chicken, fried pickles, the fried corn nuggets, french fries, etc. The rolls are delicious, always warm and soft. It's always clean inside and the staff is super friendly! The only drawback is that it's only about four minutes from my house - and I go there more than I should :-) read more

We have been buying from Chicken Express off 46 since It opened, but this last year has been nothing but cold food, getting shorted on orders, rude people taking orders?! This last order of food was about as bad as it gets!! Dry, cold chicken, must have been sitting a couple of hours! However kids do not eat okra. This is the second time recently they did not provide us the gravy for the chicken. Really? How can you forget this staple? But I was actually impressed, got a kids meal (I don't eat too much) tender and roll with fries. The chicken tender was cooked perfectly, not too crispy and very juicy. The roll was so good and soft. Went for lunch today. Ordered the 8 pc dark special for $9.95. I requested all 8 pcs be thighs, (which I've done several times before without a problem). The cashier turned to ask someone who appeared to be in charge and was given the green light to accommodate my request. I paid and waited for my order. Thirty seconds later, an evidently higher ranking employee called me back to the register to inform me that the order includes four each; thighs and legs. I told her my preference for thighs and if there is an up charge I would be willing to pay it. I gave her a $10 bill and was handed $3.00 in change. I felt like that was an excessive up charge but I paid it. After a moment of reflection, I decided that $21.00 was not appropriate for the order that I placed. I asked for my money back before my order was ready and was given a full refund. A $7.00 up charge just to replace four legs for thighs is ridiculous, especially since I've been given this substitution in the past without an issue. I enjoy your food, that's why I patronize the restaurant. Not any more...poor choice from leadership on site, especially when facing losing a customer. read more

Great tea and most of the people working there are great. The food is good when it's fresh, but therein lies the gamble. I dined in today at 2:30 and I would guess the food I was served was actually cooked sometime around 12:30-1:00. I ate two fries and half a chicken tender and returned the rest to them. I explained that I wasn't looking for a refund but the food had been sitting out so long it wasn't worth eating. There was no apology or comment, nor was any offer made to get a manager for the complaint. I looked behind the counter to the food prep area and noticed huge piles of cooked food waiting under heating lamps while three employees stood around talking.
