This time, we went all the way to the Spring Branch area to eat here at Richter's Antler Inn. I had found it on an internet search for new places for our group. Nobody in our group of nine had ever heard of it, let alone eaten there. The distance scared a few off, but most of the usual folks came. I knew I was ordering liver and onions months ago when I first studied the menu. I got mine fried because one of my friends said that would be best. I knew my mom always sauteed it in a fry pan, so I passed on the grilled version. I was really shocked when it was served fried with a batter like a chicken fried steak. My friend said that was how her mama always did it. That will probably be how I always do it going forward. It was perfect. The whole plate, which included mashed potatoes with brown gravy and corn, was perfect. I also tried an Antlerita on the rocks. Believe me, it was the best margarita I have had in years. It was only something like four dollars at happy hour prices. I would have had another, had I not been driving. Others in our group had chicken fried steaks, fried catfish, and fried shrimp. I could see that all of the portions were large. I specifically asked how everyone liked their food. Not one negative response in the bunch. That always makes me happy as the organizer. The atmosphere here is pure Texas Country. It is beautifully rustic and felt like a very comfortable ranch lodge. I'm going to put it on the list for out of state guests in the future. Our server was a very young man. I tried to remember the name, but y'all no I have a mind like a sieve, as Daddy used to say. Anyway, he looked like he might have just graduated high school and gone straight to work here. He did a great job. I don't think there was one mistake on our order. Any my folks always make special requests that would annoy a veteran server. I'm going to mention the price here, because it simply blew me away. I had fried liver and onions, Texas toast, mashed potatoes with gravy, a margarita, and a sweet tea all for $16.00! I stopped for fast food the other day and paid more than that. The place started picking up and getting busy as we were there, but our waitress continued to make eye contact with us and make sure we had what we needed. I ordered the special which was Carne guisado tacos it came with a dessert and tea or coffee and the price was phenomenal. I gave that a shot and my husband ordered the pastrami on toast with fries. Our orders were done quickly and the tacos. The meat inside them was amazing. Melt in your mouth, tender, and not dry at all. The beans were wonderful homemade pinto beans and the rice was a little salty like chicken broth salty but I was thrilled with the meal. The tacos were huge. My husband got the pastrami like I said, and he said this was the best pastrami sandwich he has ever had. That's strong praise from this meat lover. The waitress was slower towards the end of our meal as the place got more packed, but she was still making eye contact with us. We saw that a dessert came with it for free and she quickly got that out to us after we finished our meal. The dessert was basically a small portion of apple cobbler or something like that which was very un impressive. Ordered the 1/2 pound bean burger and the onion rings. The Bean and Cheese burger was less than memorable and the onion rings were all batter no onion. The wife ordered the mushroom Swiss burger and the bun became one with the burger due to the excessive grease. We are locals and love supporting local business but this is one we won't be coming back to. Absolutely a waste of money and honestly a burger from Whataburger would have been better than what we were served tonight. Their strawberry margarita tasted like strawberry syrup and alcohol and was also less than palatable. The chips and queso were also really good which says a lot since I'm not usually a chips and queso person. Prices were very reasonable as well which we all appreciated. My friend ordered the mini crab cakes and loved them especially because they weren't heavily breaded.
